Corrosion
NIROSTA 4462 is not susceptible to
intercrystalline corrosion and even in the
welded condition meets the requirements
of the Strauss test to SEP 1877, Pract. 1
and the Streicher test to ASTM A262,
Pract. B.
Resistance to pitting and crevice
corrosion, reflecting the pitting resistance
equivalent of Cr + 3.3 Mo + 16 N, is
significantly higher than with the
austenitic materials 1.4429 (AISI 316 LN)
and 1.4438 (AISI 317 L). Laboratorydetermined critical temperatures are
given in Table A.
Resistance in seawater is generally very
good, although under unfavourable
conditions corrosive attack may occur in
narrow crevices.
Thanks to the high chromium and
molybdenum contents corrosion
resistance and in particular the capacity
for repassivation in acids, also in the
presence of impurities, is better than with
the austenitic steels 1.4429 and 1.4438
(Tables B to E).
On account of its high alloy content
and two-phase microstructure
NIROSTA 4462 exhibits excellent
resistance to stress corrosion cracking,
both in chloride-containing media and
under sour gas conditions.
