Exercise #3
Creating Data Flow Diagrams Using Oracle Designer
I. Objective
With this exercise you familiarize yourself with the Data Flow Diagramming Tools in Oracle
Designer. You are given a mini case and need to draw its context diagram and level-0 diagram.
To help with this process the context diagram is complete, but the level-0 diagram is incomplete.
You will still need to draw both, but the attachments in this exercise will help you begin. Model
your DFDs off of the ones provided in this exercise.
Make sure you apply all the concepts and knowledge that you learned from the lecture and the
in-class DFD to complete the level-0 diagram. There is not one standard answer, but most
answers will be similar. You need to complete the level-0 diagram so that all components (data
stores, data flows, and/or processes) in the diagram make it a logical DFD for the intended
application.
II. Case Description
Bubba, Inc. is an engineering firm with about 200 engineers of different types (mechanical,
electrical, etc.).
The company keeps records on all valid applicants for the firms open positions. Engineering
managers directly evaluate and hire new applicants based on the data provided in the application
form. The evaluation is based on a comparison of the job description with the applicants
qualifications and the interview results.
When an applicant applies for a potential job, his/her application is stored in a file. The applicant
then receives an empty employee form that needs to be filled out and returned to Bubba, Inc.
Once Bubba, Inc. receives the completed employee form the application data is stored in the
employee data file.
Later, the application data is used to set up an interview schedule. This schedule is sent to both
the applicant and the appropriate manager for an interview.
In the past, managers were responsible for the addition/modification of job descriptions (which
are also stored in a data file).
Once the interview is complete, the appropriate manager provides the evaluation result to the
personnel department. The personnel department uses the information from the both the manager
and the job description to make a final decision.

Depending on the decision, a hiring letter will be sent to the potential employee (e.g., the job
applicant), and a function call will send the hiring decision data to the "Create Employee's
record" process to update the employee record.
III. How to Complete this Exercise
1. Log into Oracle Designer.
2. Create a DFD for both the context diagram and the level-0 diagram in your personal
repository. Remember to base your DFDs off of the ones provided in this exercise.
IV. Requirements for this Exercise
Save both DFDs and in your personal repository. For verification purposes, turn in a print
document in the following format:
1. Cover page
2. Context DFD (on one page)
3. Level-0 DFD (on one page)
