MLK Youth Day of Service Inspires 325 Students to

Serve Their Communities Through Volunteerism
AT&T Announces $5,000 AT&T Innovation Award to Support Event
MADISON, Monday, January 19, 2015 Nearly 325 students participated in a series of science workshops
and community service projects today during the fourth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event
at the Discovery Building in Madison.
The goal is to inspire youth to serve their communities through volunteerism while providing educational
opportunities for them to engage in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). The event is a
partnership with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition and the Urban League of Greater Madison.
During the event, AT&T also announced a $5,000 AT&T Innovation Award to support this years MLK Youth
Day of Service.
Every year, Americans across the country come together on the King Holiday for a day ON, not a day OFF
as part of United We Serve, the Presidents national call to service initiative, said Ed Lee, Interim President
& CEO of Urban League of Greater Madison. Through the MLK Youth Day of Service, we are proud to help
young people explore how STEAM connects with MLKs mission of service. We are grateful to have the
support from so many partners to help make this service day possible.
Throughout the day, students participated in a series of hands-on science stations that gave students the
chance to explore live insects, extract DNA from a strawberry, and even hold a human brain in their hands.
In the afternoon, students participated in service learning projects, including making blankets for community
centers, creating cards for soldiers, and helping out a food pantry.

AT&T is proud to continue Martin Luther King Jr.s legacy through our support of this years MLK Youth Day
of Service and by giving back to our communities through volunteer service, said Scott T. VanderSanden,
president of AT&T Wisconsin.
One of the best ways we can honor Dr. Kings life and legacy is through service to others and to our
communities, said State Rep. Lisa Subeck (D-Madison). Not only does this day of service encourage
students to become involved in their community, but it also exposes them to the exciting career options
available in STEAM fields.
The AT&T Wisconsin Innovation & Investment Award program provides funding to organizations and
programs that improve the community by advancing education, enhancing the environment, promoting
economic development, or delivering other community services.
