DRUG STUDY

Ampicillin sodium and sulbactam sodium (Unasyn, Ampimax)

CLASSIFICATION:
Aminopenicillin, Beta-lactamase inhibitor
MECHANISM:
Destroys bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis during microbial multiplication. Addition of sulbactam
enhances drugs resistance to beta-lactamase, an enzyme produced by bacteria that may inactivate ampicillin
SIDE EFFECT:
NURSING INTERVENTION
a. Check patients temperature and watch for other signs and symptoms of superinfection
b. Advise patient to minimize GI upset by eating small frequent feedings and plenty of fluids
c. advice to use soft toothbrushes
d. monitor for seizures when giving high doses

DRUG STUDY
Azithromycin (Zithromax)
CLASSIFICATION: Macrolide,Anti-infective
MECHANISM:
bactericidal and bacteriostatic; inhibits protein synthesis after binding with ribosomal subunit of susceptible
organisms. Demonstrate cross-resistance to erythromycin-resistant gram-positive strains
SIDE EFFECT
NURSING INTERVENTION:
a. Administer tablets with or without food
b.give oral suspension 1 hour before meals or 2 hours afterwards
c. remind patient to complete entire course of therapy even after symptoms improve

DRUG STUDY
Acetylcysteine/N-acetylcysteine (Mucomyst, Mucosil,Parvolex)
CLASSIFICATION: Mucolytic
MECHANISM: decreases viscosity of secretilons; promotes secretion removal through coughing, postural drainage
and mechanical means. Also maintains and restores hepatic glutathione needed to inactivate toxic metabolites in
acetaminophen overdose.
SIDE EFFECT
NURSING INTERVENTION
a. monitor respiration, cough and character of secretion

DRUG STUDY
Furosemide (Lasix, Novosemide, Furoside)
CLASSIFICATION

Diuretic, antihypertensive
MECHANISM
Inhibits sodium and chloride absorption from ascending loop of henle and distal renal tubules; increase plasma
volume, promoting renal excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, hydrogen, and calcium
SIDE EFFECT
NURSING INTERVENTION:
Monitor blood pressure, pulse, fluid intake and output, weight.
Intruct patient to take drug in morning with food to prevent nocturia
Advise patient to avoid hazardous activities because the drug affects concentration and alertness
Instruct patient to move slowly when rising
Advise patient to eat small frequent feedings of healthy foods

DRUG STUDY
Losartan Potassium (Cozaar)
CLASSIFICATION:Angiotensin II receptor antagonist
MECHANISM
Blocks effects of angiotensin II at various receptor sites, including vascular smooth muscles and adrenal glands
SIDE EFFECT
NURSING INTERVENTION
Monitor blood pressure
Instruct patient to avoid potassium supplements or salt substitute containing potassium
