Motor Driver Hybrid ICs

2007-7

Microstepping operation for

High Precision, Quietness

and Safety
Microstepping motor control is widely used as a control method that can realize highprecision positioning control and quiet operation to minimize the impact on the ambient
environment.
SANYO motor driver hybrid ICs (HICs) can control motor revolutions using only an
externally input clock signal frequency. In addition, these HICs also incorporate a current
detecting resistor, which helps to simplify the mechanical design.
Models that incorporate various protective functions such as overcurrent, overheating and
motor pin open detection have also been added to the lineup to enhance motor control
safety.
We hope that you will consider SANYO motor driver HICs to further reduce the size and
increase the safety of your electronic equipment.

Features of Motor Driver Hybrid ICs

SANYO Motor Driver Hybrid ICs (HICs) are created using SANYO's unique insulated metal substrate

Models that incorporate various protective functions such as overcurrent, overheating and motor pin open detection have
also been added to the lineup to enhance motor control safety.

This section provides a short introduction to the superlative features of IMSTTM.

Superlative Heat Dissipation

Heat is one of the points that determines the reliability of electronic equipment. The IMSTTM substrate efficiently radiates heat
that would otherwise concentrate in the device. This is the optimal mounting technology for the power electronics area.

Reduced Design Periods

No matter how far digital technology advances, the current detection block will always remain analog. By adopting hybrid ICs
which integrate both power circuits and the analog control circuits that require both experience and know-how on the part of the
designer, shortened design period and design simplification can be achieved.

technology (IMSTTM), which adopts the aluminum, a metal, as the base substrate material.

100

The use of IMSTTM hybrid ICs can reduce the total number of parts required in the end product and contribute to achieving end
product miniaturization, a reduced number of steps in the assembly process, simplification of materials management, improved
serviceability, and cost reductions.

Bare Chip Mounting

Low-profile, Thin-form and Hollow Packages

A wide variety of package line-up: low-profile type [H=18.2mm], slim type [t=3.3mm], and hollow type, for the circuit board of
the set on which the hybrid ICs are mounted.

Comparison of Package (Concept Diagram)

Low-profile Resin Packages [W=29.2, H=18.2, t=4.5mm]

Bare semiconductor chips are mounted directly on the IMSTTM substrate and devices are connected by ultrasonically
bonded aluminum wire. This allows the number of solder connections to be reduced, thus increasing device and system

Built-in Current Detection Resistor

With IMSTTM circuit boards, the circuitry required for detecting the currents of power devices, resistors, comparators and other such
components can be mounted on the same boards. This results in high current detection accuracy and stable characteristics.

Functions and Features

Built-in two-phase signal distribution IC and switchable between full (2-phase) and half (1-2 phase)
excitation via the MODE pin.
Unipolar constant-current control driver with built-in current detection resistor. Motor current is set by the
voltage of the Vref pin.
Motor speed is controlled with the frequency of the square wave signal input to the CLOCK pin.
Provides a motor direction switching pin, the CWB pin.

For the STK672-600, -610, -530, -540, -330, -340, -110, and -120, make sure that the RESETB input is
always set low when 5V power is turned on so that the internal control IC is initialized without fail.
For STK672-600 and -610, MODE shown in the figures below corresponds to MODE1.

STK672-311

Motor Current in 2, 1-2, W1-2, 2W1-2, and 4W1-2 Phase Excitation

Functions and Features

Package width of 29.5mm.
Built-in two-phase signal distribution IC and switchable between W1-2 and 2W1-2 phase excitation via
the MODE pin.
Unipolar constant-current control driver with built-in current detection resistor. Motor current is set by the
voltage on the Vref pin.
Motor speed is controlled with the frequency of the square wave signal input to the CLOCK pin.
Provides both a motor direction switching pin, the CWB pin, and motor current cutoff pin, the ENABLE
pin.

For the STK672-400, -410, -060, -040, -050, -070, -080, and -311, make sure that the RESETB input is
always set low when 5V power is turned on so that the internal control IC is initialized without fail.
The STK672-311 operates on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal.

Three-phase bipolar constant-current microstepping motor drivers

STK673-010, -011

Motor Current in 2, 2-3, W2-3, and 2W2-3 Phase Excitation

Functions and Features

Built-in three-phase signal distribution IC and switchable between 2, 2-3, W2-3, and 2W2-3 phase
excitation via the Mode A, B, C pins.
Bipolar constant-current control driver with built-in current detection resistor. Motor current is set by the
voltage on the Vref pin.
Motor speed is controlled with the frequency of the square wave signal input to the CLOCK pin.
Provides both a motor direction switching pin, the CWB pin, and motor current cutoff pin, the ENABLE pin.
Provides the HOLDB pin, which allows the motor to be stopped in the state where current is flowing.

In order to initialize the internal control IC reliably, ensure that the RESETB input is kept at low when the 5V
power is turned on.
