Office hours are in the phyics prep room (ESEE 2342A).
Scientific Calculator: Your calculator must have trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent, etc.). You will not be allowed to use
a cell phone calculator during exams.
Scantrons: You will need at least five regular-sized Scantrons (form number 882-E) to complete the homework assignments. You
will also need at least nine quiz-sized Scantrons (form number 815-E) to complete the reading quizzes.

Focus:
College Physics I (PHYS 1401) is the beginning of a two-semester study of physics. Topics include kinematics, Newtons laws of
motion, conservation of energy, momentum and collisions, rotational motion, simple harmonic motion, fluids, and heat. All material is
presented at the algebraic level.
Requirements:
Prerequisites: MATH 1314 (College Algebra) and MATH 1316 (Trigonometry) or MATH 2412 (Pre-Calculus)
myTCC: This course utilizes the myTCC Blackboard course manager, which can be accessed at https://my.tccd.edu. It is your
responsibility to check this site on a regular basis for posted announcements, reading assignments, and to check the accuracy of your
posted grades.
Attendance Policy: TCC has a mandatory attendance policy. A student in an on-campus course missing a cumulative of fifteen
percent of the class meetings (i.e. eight days for this sixteen-week course that meets three times per week) and not keeping up with the
course assignments may be dropped at the discretion of the instructor. Attendance will be maintained in WebAdvisor; it is your
responsibility to check WebAdvisor periodically for the accuracy of your attendance record. If you miss a class, you are still
responsible for the lecture material covered in you absence.

Daily Assignments:
Homework problems will be handed out during class. Homework sets are due at the beginning of class on the day specified. No late
homework will be accepted, even if you complete the assignment but forget to bring it to class. Partial credit will be assigned based on
your handwritten work. No credit will be given for a final answer given without work shown. More detailed guidelines for completing
the homework assignments will accompany the first homework assignment. No homework grades will be dropped.
Lab information can be found in the Lab ICR.
Reading Quizzes will be given almost daily at the beginning of each class meeting, except for the first class and test days. There will
be twenty-five reading quizzes given randomly throughout the semester. No advance notice will be given before each quiz. You
should prepare for class as if there will be a quiz each day. Each quiz will cover material from the text and will serve as an introduction
to the lecture. The quiz will cover required reading assignments posted in myTCC each day. You may not use any resources (other
students, textbooks, notes, notecards, cell phones, computers, etc.) during the quizzes. No make-up quizzes will be given. If you are
absent or tardy and miss the quiz, you will receive no credit for that days quiz questions. The two lowest quiz grades will be dropped.
Tests will be given five times during the semester. Tests will be a combination of multiple choice conceptual questions and
handwritten problems. You will have approximately 50 minutes to complete each test. Scratch paper will be provided, but you should
bring your own calculator. You may not use any other resources (other students, textbooks, notes, notecards, cell phones, computers,
etc.) during the tests. An outline of material covered on each test and an example equation sheet will be posted in myTCC. No test
grades will be dropped.
The Cumulative Final Exam will be given on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. The final exam must be
taken at this time on this day. Final exams will not be given early due to pre-scheduled vacations, family events, etc. If you need to
take the exam early, you must contact me as soon as you become aware of the conflict. You will then have to submit a formal request
to the Math and Science Division Dean. I will not give the final exam early to any student without the deans approval. The final
exam will have the same format as previous tests, but different questions will be asked. Just as with previous tests, you may use your
own calculator, but other resources are restricted. No grade can replace the final exam grade, and the final exam grade will not be
dropped.
No extra credit assignments will be given.

Additional Resources
Supplemental Instruction (SI): Esau Hervert will hold SI sessions designed specifically around this section of PHYS 1401. The
dates and times for these sessions will be determined based on your response to a survey given on the first day of class. You should
make arrangements to attend these SI sessions on a weekly basis. Esau will also attend each class meeting and take each test.
Physics Tutoring: Bethany Hiller will provide free physics tutoring throughout the semester. Detailed information regarding her
hours, location, and contact information will be provided in an additional flyer given on the first day of class. This flyer will also be
posted in myTCC. In addition to her regular tutoring hours, Ms. Hiller will also hold several workshops on specific topics during the
semester. More information about these workshops will be announced in class.
Physics Wiki: You can access the Southeast campus physics departments wiki at http://sephysics.wikispaces.com. This site has
information about physics tutoring, physics resources including equation sheets and other handouts, and physics-related videos.
