Christian Leadership
What does it mean to be a Christian
leader? I find myself reflecting upon
this question often. How do we lead by
example and in a Christ-like manner? How
do we lead in a way where faith, hope, and
love are evident in our words and actions?
Faithandleadership.com is a website
sponsored by Duke Divinity School where
leaders can come to reflect, connect, and
learn. Here is a link to a series of articles and videos focusing on the
subject of Christian leadership: http://tinyurl.com/FaithAndLeadership.
There is a lot of insight and inspiration there.
In his book Servant Leadership, Robert Greenleaf talks about the concept
of servant leadership: Who is the servant leader? The servant-leader is
servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve,
to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That
person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because
of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material
possessions (Greenleaf 27). Throughout his life and ministry, Jesus
demonstrated servant leadership. He states in Marks gospel that, The
Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Many people in our world long to be
leaders but they are not willing to be servants. Many long for power and
influence, but dont want the responsibility and the accountability that
comes along with it. Leadership is not easy, but it is absolutely essential
for the health of any organization or institution! Leadership takes vision,
courage, thick skin, resilience, and determination.
We are once again in the nominating process here at Woodmont. We
are currently accepting nominations from the congregation through
January 31st for the following positions: one Treasurer, three atlarge board members, five Elders and twenty-five Deacons. To
be eligible for Elder, one has to have been a church member for at least
TWO years as of July 1, 2015 and a member for ONE year to be eligible for
Deacon. In considering individuals to nominate, please ask the following
questions: 1) Are they serious about their faith and spiritual life?
2) Do they have a servants heart and have they demonstrated
leadership ability? 3) Are they committed to the overall well-being
of Woodmont and our mission? 4) Are they present on a regular
basis in worship and in other activities/ministries and do they
support Woodmont with their time, talent, and treasure? 5) Will
they help move Woodmont forward in the years to come? If you can
answer yes to each of these questions, then I highly encourage you to
nominate them for leadership in our church.

Every spring, Woodmont sponsors a Habitat for Humanity build that changes the
lives of families - our church family and the family we build a home for. Church
members and friends come out in droves to put a hammer to a nail, a paintbrush
to a wall, and to get to know one another while doing the work of God. After the
work of building is over, we hand the keys over - keys to new dignity, new hope
and new life. We need volunteers to build a home as well as to provide snacks
and food for builders or donate funds for these items.

In a time when dramatic changes are taking place in Western Christianity, Celtic Spirituality (drawing
inspiration from the lives of ancient Celtic Saints) offers a fresh stirring of the Spirit among us and
a deeper understanding of God for us. What did Pelagius and the Celtic Church teach in contrast to
Augustine and the Roman Church? Come and find out.

During the summers of 2010 & 2011 Jason traveled to a small village in Ghana, called Okyereko (oh-chuhREK-oh), to conduct field research on malaria mosquitoes. Since that time Jason and Lisa have been actively
involved in community development projects in the village. They have partnered with local village leaders
to form a non-governmental, not-for-profit corporation in Ghana named International Partners in Rural
Development, Africa (IPIRD). The organization is committed to improving public health and supporting
childhood education. Among their most important accomplishments to date has been the construction of a
computer lab in the junior high school, the first of its kind within the entire school district. They are actively
seeking funding for public latrine construction and badly-needed elementary school renovations. They also
provide tuition assistance to students based on financial need on a recurring basis.
This is a one-hour class focused on the Bible attended by many young adults between the ages of 19-25.
This class offers an open forum for in-depth reading and discussion of scripture.
