Dice Automotive:

Dice Automotive is an event launched by the SMME and DICE Foundation that provides
a platform for automotive related innovations by motivating people from both academia
and industry to utilize state-of-art technologies to design and present an innovative idea.
This event is an opportunity for all students and industry/research organizations to
participate with their ingenious research, projects and innovations.

It provides a platform for collaboration among academia, industry, government, and

entrepreneurs on all matters pertaining to the growth of automotive sector in Pakistan.
Projects having potential to benefit local automotive industry/economy will be given
special consideration
It aims to mobilize expatriate community to take advantage of their expertise and
experiences for the benefit of auto industry in Pakistan
To act as a body to recommend automotive related strategies and implementation plans
to Government of Pakistan.

Scope:
1. Automotive Design & Manufacturing techniques
2. Fuels, Fuel Cells for Electric & Hybrid Vehicles
3. Systems and Methods for Economy improvement
4. Emissions
5. Advanced Materials for Vehicles
6. Automotive Electronics, Controls and Instrumentation
7. Ergonomic Design of Automotive
8. Vehicle Dynamics
9. Active & Passive Safety
10. Human- Machine Interfacing
11. Automotive CFD Design / Analysis
12. Performance Enhancement
13. Motor Sports Engineering
14. Others (Thermal Design, Structural Design etc.)

List of projects presented this year at Dice Automotive 2014 are as follows:

1) Design analysis and fabrication of a super lightweight chassis (Comsats Institute of

Information technology Sahiwal):

A very lightweight chassis design which is sturdy but easy to manufacture and analyze as well.

2) All terrain vehicle (G.I.K.I):

An all terrain, wirelessly controlled combat vehicle capable of performing espionage, combat
operations and patrol duty.

3) Behavior of spring-back in high tensile steel sheets (NED university):

In this project the behavior of spring back in different high tensile steel sheets is studied against
various selected parameters analytically and experimentally.

4) dsPIC based Engine Control Unit (ECU) powered by LabView:

The purpose of this project is to develop a low cost open source dsPIC based Engine Control
Unit (ECU) powered by LabView. The user can edit the fuel/ ignition maps and other vital
parameters. It provides a working platform to students, researchers and developers.

5) Design of electromagnetic clutch and automatic transmission (HITECH University Taxila

Cantt):
the electromagnetic clutch is lighter, quicker, efficient and transmits torque more effectively. A
stepper motor changes the gear thus eliminating the foot work involved in shifting. A icro
controller is responsible for all the decisions to be made.

6) Active and passive safety in the automobile (Comsats Institute of Information technology
Sahiwal):
An explanation and demonstration of how the safety has been improved in their vehicle. The
structure has been created such that it withstands force load applied on it to a certain degree
because of its design. And there are also other supports built in the front of the car which offer
the passenger protection.

7) Fabrication of compressed air car (Swedish college of engineering and technology):

A car which runs on compressed air.

8) Automotive spark ignited engine idle speed control system (Muhammad Ali Jinnah
University):
A control system to control the speed of a vehicle with a SI engine in idle speed mode.

9) FGPA based adaptive cruise car control system:

A car is fitted with a FGPA based sensor and control system. It receives signals from the car in
front of it and maintains constant speed equal to the car ahead of it and also applies brakes when
the car ahead of it applies brakes to avoid a collision.

10) Anti-theft and anti-snatching security and control with mobile:

A device is installed in a car and an app is installed in the car owners cell phone. The app allows
the user to turn on/off the AC, heater engine lights from outside and without having to get the
car. If the security system is removed from the car, it will not start. Also if a thief snatches the
car, all the owner has to do is tap a button on the phone and the car will stop after a few minutes.

11) Increasing efficiency and emission control of IC engine using HHO as auxiliary fuel (HITEC
University):
Presence of carbon element in a conventional fuel like petrol and diesel leads to emission
pollution which are associated with the combustion process in traditional internal combustion
engine. OxyHydrogen gas is an enriched mixture of hydrogen and oxygen bonded together
molecularly and magnetically to produce gas which decreases emissions.

12) Design and fabrication of automobile door using composite materials (College of Electrical
and Mechanical Engineering, NUST) :
A low cost solution for replacement of vehicle parts that can be fabricated by SMEs. VARI
(volume assisted resin infusion) process is used in order to achieve an enhanced volume fraction
for better specific stiffness.

13) Design and development of chassis dynamometer for motorbike (NED University):
A chassis dynamometer capable of measuring power up to 10 hp. It can be integrated with
LabView software. It is easy to operate and maintain. It is cost effective. Te eddy current
absorber provides loading capabilities to properly tune and simulate road driving conditions for
motorcycles.

14) Solar electric vehicle (Sarhad univesrity):

This vehicle can carry four passengers. The running cost is Rs 1/km. It is environmentally
friendly. This vehicle produces zero emissions and has a low running cost. It is very simple and
has potential to be manufactured locally and has high demand.

15) Development of Digital Image Correlation for advanced composite testing (University of
Engineering and Technology Taxila):
Digital image correlation is a novel method of calculating material properties, damage and
fracture in difficult configurations of composite materials. Inter laminar shear strain and shear
modulus is calculated using digital image correlation in a four point bending test of a glass fiber
reinforced polymer, by observing the cross section.
