When we were assigned to do a classroom observation, we were curious
about what we were going to observe. We just had the idea since it was a
classroom management course, then it must be related to how the teacher manages
the class or how the teacher controls the classroom.
We did our observation at SMPN 4 Malang. We observed a seven grade
English class. It was not a big class. We think the number of the students was not
too many, since there were around 26 students in the class. It was a morning class
held from 7 oclock until around 8.20 a.m. During the observation, we were
brought to the laboratory where the learning process took place. In this
observation, we observed the classroom condition, the teaching and learning
process, and the teachers competences.
From the classroom condition, we think that the laboratory was not a good
class for the students. The lamps were not lightened, the windows were not
opened, which created a gloomy atmosphere in the class and we thought that
condition was very disturbing to the students learning process.
Talking about the rooms placement, the wall of the laboratory was pasted
with pictures, but the pictures were not related to the material that was delivered.
It was a language laboratory surrounded with flower pictures like in Biology
class. The back part of the room was very bare and has nothing interesting. The
room also had no chair for the students, meaning that they had to sit on the
carpeted floor. We thought that this was not good because we were sure that the
students were not convenient by sitting on the floor for about one and half an
hour. There was still tables for listening activity with audiotape machine in each
booth, but they were not completed with headphones and chairs, which we could
not call this unused room as laboratory then. We mean, why bothered using a
language laboratory when all the students had to do was just sitting on the floor
rather than being busy with their listening-machine stuffs? They could do these
activities in the regular classroom as well. We also noticed that there was no board

in the class. Although there was a LCD projector, but we still thought that a class
should need a board for the teacher to explain; moreover, it will help when the
teacher cannot operate the LCD and the projector.
Secondly, we will talk about the teaching and learning process. In the
learning process, the teachers role was a controller, conductor, and monitor. So
here the teacher controlled the class by deciding what the students should do. The
teacher as conductor, she explained what the students should do by moving
around and checked whether the students do the task well or not. At the beginning
of the lesson they prayed before they started the lesson. Afterwards, they sang a
national song. They sang Rayuan Pulau Kelapa song. Actually, singing a
national song before lesson was the school program held every Saturday. After
they sang the song, the teacher explained about nature and how we should love
our environment. She also motivated students for having nationalism and
patriotism, and told them to be a good successor of Indonesia in the future. She
even mentioned things about corruption and how bad corruptors were; so, students
already got good character values through these motivation. After that, she
collected students homework from the previous meeting, which was writing an
informal letter. Unfortunately, we still caught some students copied and did their
homework at school, even though it just took few minutes for them to copy the
work. Then, they began the lesson. The material was about rooms in my house.
The teacher brainstorms the students about rooms in their house. She asked the
students about the names of the rooms in their house and the students could
answer almost all the question given.
In teaching the names of rooms in house and their functions, the teacher
made a song. We think that the teacher is so creative. She composed a new lyric
from a song so that the students could learn better. They sang together but the
students were a little bit confused about the song. It might be because they had not
known the song before. Therefore, the teacher sang the song for them while the
students wrote the lyrics. We concluded that this activity was actually a listening
activity. After the students wrote all the lyrics, the teacher displayed the lyrics
using projector so that the students could correct their mistake in writing the song
lyrics. The lyrics of the song contained the names and also the function of rooms

in the house which made the students can memorize the names and the functions
of the rooms well and quickly. After they sang the song, the teacher assigned the
students to write all of the rooms in the house and their functions. This activity
could strengthen the students comprehension. Because they ran out of time, the
teacher assigned the students to continue their work as a homework. At the end of
the lesson, the teacher asked the students to sing the song again so that they could
memorize it well.
Furthermore, we will talk about the teachers competences. From the
observation, we saw that the teacher explained the material well because she used
Bahasa Indonesia to teach. This was so hard to say that the teacher had not
mastered the professional competence. She knew the materials well but from the
way she spoke, we can say that she did not pronounce every word right. She made
a lot of mistakes in pronouncing words. Actually, this kind of problem should not
happen in classroom because a teacher is a model for the students. What the
teacher says will be followed by the students. If a teacher makes mistakes,
especially mispronouncing words, students will also do the same mistakes. It is so
important because starting from young age, children should be given the right
concept and knowledge of English before it is too late for them to reconcept and
fix what has been fossilized inside their minds.
In sum, we can conclude that the English class in the seventh grade at
SMPN 4 Malang which we visited and observed was actually did not have
sufficient facility and the teacher did not maximize the use of facilities provided
by the school. The teacher also lacked in mastery of English, especially in fluency
of speaking in English besides considering her language of instruction which was
mixed in Bahasa Indonesia and a little English. Moreover, the teacher did not
apply an effective cooperative learning among students. We thought that it would
be better to let her students do the task in a group rather than focusing in
individual work or project. However, the teacher used a nice teaching method
through songs, which was a good way to teach English for seventh graders.
Students could learn faster and feel excited during the class. The teacher was also
good in giving motivation before the class as well as implementing the
brainstorming activity to elaborate students thinking,
