Browse FLNG Development

April 2014

Woodside as Operator of
the Browse Joint Venture
is progressing floating
liquefied natural gas
(FLNG) as the preferred
development concept to
commercialise globally
significant resources in
the Browse Basin, located
approximately 425 km
offshore north of Broome
in Western Australia.

The Brecknock, Calliance and Torosa fields which are collectively known as the Browse
resources are estimated to contain gross
(100%) contingent resources (2C) of 14.9 Tcf of
dry gas and 441.2 million barrels of condensate.
In September 2013, the Browse Joint Venturers
selected FLNG in conjunction with a subsea
development, as the preferred development
concept for the Browse resources, marking the
start of the Basis of Design (BOD) phase.
FLNG provides a technically innovative solution
to developing the remote, offshore Browse gas
fields. It combines the functions of an offshore
gas receiving facility, with gas treatment and
liquefaction plant, as well as storage and
offloading facilities.
The BOD phase will determine the basic design
parameters of the development concept, which
is premised on three FLNG facilities located in
Australian waters. This concept utilises Shells
FLNG technology and Woodsides offshore
development expertise.

The FLNG facilities will require supporting supply

chain infrastructure during both installation and
operational phases, which will lead to ongoing
employment and contracting opportunities.
Principal marine operations, materials handling
and aviation support will be conducted from
within Australia.
The Browse Joint Venturers are seeking to enter
Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for the
development in 2H 2014. FEED is the last stage
before a Final Investment Decision (FID), which
Woodside is targeting for 2H 2015.
The Browse FLNG Development is a megaproject expected to deliver billions of dollars in
government revenue, and approximately 1000
direct jobs during its 40-50 year operations,
creating substantial local opportunities.

STATUS:

FLNG Technology
The innovation of FLNG combines two
existing, proven technologies offshore gas
receiving and LNG processing in a single
facility.

FLNG technology is a significant, new

innovation for the LNG industry with
considerable cost and environmental
benefits.

An FLNG facility is towed to location where

it is permanently moored to the seabed.

FLNG technology utilises worlds

best practise in processing and safety
technologies to protect people, the
environment and infrastructure.

Measuring 488 m long, 74 m wide and 44 m

deep and weighing around 600,000 tonnes,
an FLNG facility at Browse will produce up
to 3.9 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of
LNG and up to 22,000 barrels per day (bpd)
of condensate.

The development of FLNG eliminates the

need for extensive gas pipelines to onshore
processing facilities, compression facilities
to flow gas to shore, near shore works
including dredging and jetty construction and
onshore infrastructure including roads, lay
down areas and accommodation facilities.

Offshore gas will be transported via dual

insulated production flowlines and flexible
risers to the FLNG facility, where impurities
such as water, mercury and CO2 are
removed.

The proposed FLNG development concept

selected by the Browse Joint Venturers
combines in-depth knowledge of the
Browse Basin, Shells FLNG technology
and Woodsides offshore development
expertise to realise the earliest commercial
development of this world-class resource.

The gas is then chilled to -162 degrees

Celsius, reducing volume by 600-fold from
its gaseous state into liquid, before being
stored onboard the facility.
Ocean-going LNG carriers then load LNG
directly from the FLNG facility at sea,
delivering to worldwide markets.

End Engineering and Design
(FEED) 2H 2014 and a Final
Investment Decision (FID) 2H 2015.
