Each year, one Saturday in September, crowds of people line the Thames
through London, to watch one of the city's (more unusual, the most
unusual, most unusual, the unusual) events: the "Great River Race". Many
big cities have one annual "marathon" race; London has two - one on dry land,
( the other, other, another, others) on water. Technically, the Great River
Race is not a marathon; it is slightly too short, and it is a boat race. Starting at
Richmond, in the western suburbs of London, participants have to row (his,
their, our, your) boats 22 miles, as far as the London docks, in the east. (A,
An, The, --) race is a relatively new event in the London calendar. The first
race (has taken, takes, took, will take) place in 1988. The idea was born in
1987, when members of the historic "Company of Watermen and Lightermen"
(had rowed, rowed, row, have rowed) a royal barge from Hampton Court
to the Tower of London.
In 1988, they challenged other "traditional boats" to a race. Boats that want
to take part must all be of traditional design, with at least four oars;
furthermore, each boat (need to, has to, might, had better) carry at least
one passenger.
Over the years, the race (became, has become, is
becoming, will become) a very (colour, colourful, colourfully, most
colourful) event, with the participation of a wonderful variety of boats. While
most are ordinary rowing boats, there are also Viking long ships, and other
unusual boats. In 1995, for instance, the race (won, is won, was won, has
been won) by a Chinese dragon boat, in a record time of 2 hours, 6 minutes
and 31 seconds!
As the years go by, the number of participants (keep, keeps, have kept,
kept) increasing; from 72 boats in 1988, (a, an, the, --) number of entries
reached 295 in 1997, and will probably be even (the highest, the higher,
higher, highest) this year. (Next, Past, Last, Future) year, there were (a
team, team, the teams, teams) from all over the U.K, and also from
America, Canada, and five European countries. In order to provide a
(thrilling, thrilled, thrill, thriller) finish to the race, a "handicap" system
operates. At the start of the race, the slowest boats set of first, the fastest
(one, the one, the ones, ones) last. In (many ways, the Great River Race is
a (true, truly, more true, truely) race, in the traditional sense of the term a race for amateurs, and a race without corporate sponsors.

3. La nivel de integrare: (22p.) Write a brief biography of someone yo

know very well and admire perhaps a parent, brother or
sister, friend. (not less than 8 sentences). Use 3 cases of verbs in the pa
tenses, passive voice; 3 cases of demonstrative, reflexive
and possessive pronouns; 3 cases of nouns in the genitive case. Underlin
the cases mentioned above in your description.

(b) Classify the pronouns composition and exemplify

What is the best-known symbol of London? Big Ben? Picadilly Circus? Or could
it be something (much, much more, most, the more) ordinary than that?
Could it be the big red London double-decker bus? It certainly (can, may,
could, should). Big red buses (recognised, are recognized, is
recognized, are recognizing) - and even found - all over the world, and
people recognise (it, him, them, its) as symbols of London. Visitors climb
into (a, an, the, --) London buses to go and see the Niagara Falls. London
buses can be (saw, see, seeing, seen)driving round Europe to advertise big
department stores, or British events . They (neednt, don't need to, cant,
could not) have the words "London Transport" on the side of them: they are
instantly recognized (of, at, for, by) millions of people!
It (has been,
was, is, had been) almost 100 years ago, on October 25th 1911, the London
General Omnibus Company (had run, were running, ran, have run) their
last horse-drawn omnibus through the streets of the capital. Since (than,
then, this, that) the big red motor bus (was, has been, is, will be)
London's "king of the road". Today, every day, thousands of Londoners (have
used, used, uses, use) the big red buses to move - often (slow, slower,
slowly) - around town; and (lot, lots, the lots) of tourists know that a oneday London bus pass, valid on all regular bus routes, ofers a wonderful way to
see
Britain's
capital
city.
The idea of the "double decker" is actually (more, most, many, much)
older than the motor bus; it is simply a continuation of the system that (is
used, had used, was used, has been used) for public transport in the age
of horse-drawn vehicles, when (one, some, others, another) of the
passengers sat inside, and the rest travelled on the roof. Too bad if it was
raining!

conditional sentences of types 1,2,3; 3 cases of modal verbs, 3 cases of
