Ohio, Michigan and New York participated in the event.
St. Johns brought home the outstanding wrestler trophy Saturday from the
Van Buren Invitational for the second

straight year. Senior Shawn Kimmet,

119 pounds, mowed down the competition without going the distance in
any match to claim the top individual
honor. His longest match came in the
finals with Brian Adelsperger of Tiffin
Calvert, a 17-2 technical fall in 4:52.
If, by chance, anyone blinked too
much during the Saturday night game
between the Jefferson Wildcats and

In a game where running held almost

Wildcats defeated the Commodores
87-66 for their second Northwest
Conference victory in as many nights.

fire sweeps through trailer
COLUMBUS (AP) A fire caused by
a dropped kerosene heater swept through
a rural trailer home on Thursday, killing
three young siblings, whose mother fell out
a window trying to save them and couldnt
get back in, a sheriff said.
The heater had caught fire, and the
mother was trying to carry it outside when
she dropped it in the kitchen, causing
fuel to spill and the fire to start spreading
through the doublewide trailer just outside
Brilliant, an Ohio River village 140 miles
east of Columbus, Jefferson County Sheriff
Fred Abdalla said.
The mother then stepped out a window,
preparing to start lifting her children outside to safety, but fell out of the window
and couldnt get back inside because of the
smoke and flames, the sheriff said.
The mother ran out to a rural road and
was hollering and screaming until someone came by in a car and could call 911,
the sheriff said. The emergency call came
in just after noon, he said.

immediately released.
Photos by WTRF-TV in nearby
Wheeling, West Virginia, showed the
charred, smoldering remains of the flattened trailer.
The mother lived with her boyfriend
and their three children in the trailer, the
sheriff said. The boyfriend was at work at
the time. They were running the kerosene
heater because they couldnt afford their
electric bill.
The state fire marshals office will investigate.
It was the fourth multiple-death home
fire in Ohio since early December. Three
children were killed in a Dec. 12 house
fire in Hamilton, and a woman and three
grandchildren were killed Dec. 26 in a
fire near Washington Court House. Then
on Jan. 6, a trailer fire in Fairfield County
killed a 10-month-old boy, his parents and
his maternal grandparents.

Ohio Food Bank (WOFB), Gary
Bright will be leaving to return
to work for Century Health
in Findlay/Hancock County.
There, Bright will act as an

development committee.
For this interim period, the
West Ohio Food Bank Board
of Directors has named Brian
Van Meter and Tommie Harner
as interim co-executive directors. They will both work with
Bright and the WOFB Board on
a transition plan to ensure that
all of the organizations operations are effectively covered and
maintained until a permanent
replacement can be named. An
announcement will be made at
a later date about the search process for a permanent CEO.
Over the past two and a half
years, the West Ohio Food Bank
has made great strides in its hunger relief efforts, improving its
fiscal stability, expanding hunger awareness and its own brand

major capital improvements all
while expanding services to the
community. However, especially during this interim period,
the communitys support will
be needed now more than ever

The Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) saved Ohioans a new program record of $18 million in 2014 assisting more than 193,000 Ohioans to improve upon last

the recent Medicare annual open enrollment period for people to select coverage for this year.
We have expert staff that understand Medicare and work with Ohioans to select the best

The sobering sermon of Marylands DUI Bishop

The bishop was candid with the small flock

at All Saints Episcopal Church, just outside
of Baltimore: She had a sobering sermon for
them.
There are things that happen in life that
we cant control, that we didnt predict, that
perhaps we dont welcome at all, said Bishop Heather Elizabeth Cook of the Diocese of
Maryland.
Believers must be prepared for the worst,
including wrestling with bad habits that can
lead to destruction, she said in a Nov. 9 sermon that was posted online.
If we routinely drive 55 in a 30-mile-anhour zone, we wont be able to stop on a dime
if driving conditions get dangerous or if an
animal or, God forbid, a human being should
step out in front of us, said Cook. Things
happen suddenly, and were either prepared
in the moment or were not, and we face the
consequences.
We cant go back. We cant do it over. In
real life, there are no instant replays.
This sermon was delivered weeks before
the accident -- two days after Christmas -- in
which police report that Cooks car veered
into a wide bike lane and hit a 41-year-old father of two, sending the cyclist crashing onto
her hood and windshield. A breath test after
she returned to the crash scene, and after she
had been taken to a police station, found a

blood-alcohol level of 0.22. The legal limit
in Maryland is 0.08.
The veteran priest and recently consecrated bishop has since been arrested and
charged with criminal negligent manslaughter, using a texting device while driving,
leaving the scene of an accident that resulted
in death and three charges of drunken driving. Her bail was set at $2.5 million, in part
because of a 2010 DUI incident in which she
received probation and paid a $300 fine. She
also faces national disciplinary proceedings,
under the jurisdiction of Presiding Bishop
Katharine Jefferts Schori.
This tragedy has left Episcopalians in pulpits and pews debating the contemporary
relevance of St. Pauls words in 1 Timothy:
Now a bishop must be above reproach,
the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, dignified, hospitable, an apt teacher, no

drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and no lover of money.
In addition to being the Maryland dioceses
first female bishop, consecrated last September, Cook is also the daughter of a prominent
priest. She was raised in the historic rectory
of Old St. Pauls Episcopal Church in downtown Baltimore and her father was nationally
known for his work with alcoholism, while
struggling with the disease himself.
Diocesan officials stressed that, before her
election, Cook told them about the 2010 incident in which she was seen driving slowly at
2 a.m., with a shredded tire, on the side of a
road. Police reported that there was vomit on
her shirt and a bottle of wine, a fifth of whiskey, two baggies of marijuana and a smoking
device in her car.
After background research, including a
psychological investigation, church leaders quietly concluded that the 2010 incident
should not bar her for consideration as a
leader.
That was then. After the fatal 2014 accident, the Diocese of Maryland released a
statement that said: We cannot preach forgiveness without practicing forgiveness and
offering people opportunity for redemption. ... We too are all filled with questions
for which there are still no answers, and we
are all filled with anger, bitterness, pain and

tears.
In the words of Cooks sermon, there are
times when people cannot hide from their
own actions.
My perception is that we live in the midst
of a culture that doesnt like to hold us accountable for consequences, that somehow
everybody gets a free pass all of the time,
she said. Well, we do -- in terms of Gods
love and forgiveness. But we dont in many
other things that happen, and its up to us to
be responsible.
Believers must prepare their hearts for severe trials, she concluded. They also must
trust God and one another.
If you are not ready in your heart, you
will miss God when he comes. You will
miss Love when she passes by. You may find
that the door of hope is shut on you, said
the bishop. If we dont know how to love
and trust in God in the small, daily events of
our lives, we might be absolutely devastated
when the really terrible things happen.

Board of Directors held its January meeting on Thursday

four points from Madison

to start the fourth period and

built its lead to 40-24.

The Lady Blue Jays got
three straight points from
Sydney Fischbach to end
the game at 42-27 and give
New Knoxville the win in the
MAC.

The bigger and taller Lady Wildcats

really struggled shooting the ball against
the quick-silver T-Birds, with only one
player in double digits: senior Brooke
Culp (4 triples; 3 assists, 5 rebounds)
with 16. Freshman Macy
Wallace (8 caroms) added
eight. They counted 11-of-45
from the field hitting a nice
5-of-11 downtown for 24.4
percent.
It definitely got away from
us. We didnt play badly the
first half, especially when we finally got
a handle on Verhoff, Jefferson mentor
Dave Hoffman explained. However,
its become a broken record for us
offensively; we attacked the basket the
first half but when we missed a couple
of shots, we stopped doing so. Then we

stopped even looking at the basket too

many times. It becomes hard to play
intense defense after all and everything
else just snowballs from there.
LCC head coach Katie Krieg has
been looking for Verhoff to have
more games like this.
We give her the green light
to shoot; we constantly tell her to.
She decided to tonight and shot
very well, Krieg added. We
usually have more than two really
doing the scoring but that is just
how the game went; we usually have more
balance. We knew we had to get out and
run against a bigger team, which is always
our game plan, and get some early offense
to neutralize their size.

Knights lean on defense to get past Lincolnview

MIDDLE POINT
Shooting can be streaky, even
for the best. But a strong
defensive effort can more
than make up for a bad night
on offense. Crestviews Lady
Knights have figured that out,
overcoming a woeful 18-percent first half shooting percentage to post a 53-35 win
at Lincolnview on Thursday
night.
We talked about that on
Saturday. We played so well

coach Greg Rickard said following the win. There are
going to be times you dont
shoot well and the defense
has to keep you in it. Tonight
it did.
Lincolnview (9-6 overall,
2-3 Northwest Conference),
was held to just 21 percent

opening half. It was 18-10,

The outstanding defensive effort wasnt limit-

ed to the Crestview side.

Katlyn
Wendel, in particular, was
strong in guarding Knight
standout Emily Bauer. Bauer,
who has at least four inches on Wendel, was frustrated
throughout the evening by
the Lancer sophomore and
was limited to just two firsthalf points.
For as undersized as she
was (against Bauer), Katlyn
was physical - she did everything we could have hoped
she would do, Lancer head
coach Dan Williamson said.
Katlyn did a great job on

her. You cant ask for much

more than that.
The Lady Knights, who
made 11 of 14 free throws in
the first half, accounting for the
difference on the scoreboard,
continued to be aggressive going
to the basket in the second half.
Freshman Paige Motycka and
senior Lindsey Motycka each
connected on a pair of foul shots
early in the third quarter, and
Mackenzie Riggenbach drilled
a 3-pointer with 5:36 left in the
period to finish a 7-0 Knight
spurt to open play.

Elida rallys past Lady Cougars 68-63

BY JIM COX
DHI Media Correspondent
sports@timesbulletin.com
VAN WERT There was little difference between Elida and Van Wert
in Thursday nights game, except the
Bulldogs hit the big shots when they
needed to, allowing them to escape with
a 68-63 win inside The Cougars Den.
Elida is now 5-9 overall and 2-3
in the Western Buckeye League. The
Cougars are 4-11 and 0-5.
The third quarter was the big one.
Sharpshooter Riley Jones had given
Van Wert a 33-29 halftime lead with a
4-point play, hitting a corner 3-pointer
plus a free throw, with 12 seconds on the
clock. Meghan Moonshower started the
third quarter with a triple from the right
wing to lead 36-29 and things looked
promising for the home team.
Not for long.
Elida answered with a 9-2 run to tie it
at 38 at the 3:15 mark but Jones tripled
from the right wing and Erin Morrow
hit two free throws, putting the Cougars
ahead again at 43-38 at 1:58.
Back came Elida again and this time
the Dogs would take the lead for good

with a 9-0 run that straddled the quarter

break and made it 47-43. An Alexis
Dowdy free throw and, 30 seconds later,
a Dowdy layup cut the lead to 49-48,
but from there, the Bulldogs gradually
stretched the lead, mostly from the free
throw line.
Van Wert sophomore Emma Kohn
scored eight points in the games last 42
seconds but to no avail.
They (the Bulldogs) were more
opportunistic with their chances, said
Van Wert coach Lance Moonshower
of the Bulldogs shooting accuracy.
Theres not much you can do about
that. I wouldnt say our defense was
good but they just made some good
shots.
There were seven ties and four lead
changes in the first half, during which
the biggest lead was Elidas at 9-4. The
statistics after 16 minutes were nearly identical but Elida freshman Shyah
Wheeler already had 14 points, all in the
first quarter, and she wasnt finished.
Elida got double-digit scoring from
Wheeler, Abby Waddle and Bailee Kuhn
with 22, 18 and 15, respectively.
Kohn, Jones, Dunlap and Morrow
had 16, 13, 10 and 10 for Van Wert,

respectively. Jones landed four treys in

seven attempts.
Elida cashed in on 47 percent (23 of
49) of its field goal tries to Van Werts
39 percent (22 of 57). Each team had
seven 3-pointers.
The Cougars were better from the
line, 80 percent (12 of 15) to 60 percent (15 of 25). Van Wert also won the
boards, 30-26, and the turnovers were
even at 14 apiece.
Elida used a variety of defenses, keying mainly on Morrow.
They spread their zone out, said
Moonshower. For some reason we just
didnt move very well. We had some
good looks. We just couldnt get on a roll.
When youre on a losing streak it
seems like the breaks always go against
you but usually you make your own
breaks by your effort, by the position
you put yourself in.
The Van Wert junior varsity won
41-28.
The Cougars (9-6) were led in scoring by Cassidy Meyers, Alexis Rupert
and Phoebe Eutsler with 14, nine and
eight, respectively.
Lauren Kesler (9) and Missy Jackson
(8) led Elida.

Brady, Belichick offer no

He does, however, have his pref- took responsibility for the underinflated

Softer balls are generally considof air pressure. The NFL requires balls
to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 ered easier to throw and catch and

To me, thats a perfect grip for the managers are known to have very indifootball, he said. I would never do vidualized preferences in how footballs

With different approaches, Belichick was unaware of the process for game

Belichick said he sometimes hears
said they have no clue how the footballs were tampered with or switched quarterbacks, kickers and other special-

ists talk about their preferences.

I can tell you and they will tell you
that there is never any sympathy from
me whatsoever on that subject. Zero,
Belichick said.
Under league rules, each team
provides 12 balls for use on offense.
Referees approve the balls more than 2
hours before game time, then keep the
balls until theyre turned over to ball
handlers provided by home teams just
before kickoff.
Belichick explained the balls used by
the Patriots offense are inflated to the
12 1/2-pound range and any deflation
would then take us under that.
Going forward, he said, the Patriots
will inflate footballs to a safe level
to prevent them from dropping under
allowable air pressure during games.
The coach who has won three Super
Bowls told reporters he generally forces
players to practice under bad-ball conditions.
Anytime players complain about
the quality of the footballs, I make it
worse and that stops the complaints,
he added. We never use the condition
of the footballs as an excuse. We play
with whatever or kick with whatever
we have to use.
The issue has drawn inflated reaction from around the game and its
fans as the Patriots prepare to play
the Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 1 in
Glendale, Arizona, for the NFL title.
Several players said it would not
distract them in preparing for the game.
Wed rather be celebrating our trip
to the Super Bowl, special teams captain Matthew Slater said. Its important to us that we respect the game and
deal with things in a way thats considered professional.
But Brady said the topic of the
sports integrity is serious.
Everyones trying to figure out what
happened but at the same time youve
got to prepare for the Seahawks, he
added.

Phil Mickelson struggles in

return, Blake Adams stars
Associated Press
LA QUINTA, Calif.
Phil Mickelson got most of
the attention in his return to
competition after a 4-month
break. Blake Adams got a lot
more out of his comeback
round.
Mickelson
shot
a
1-under 71 on Thursday
in the Humana Challenge
in his first event since the
Ryder Cup, leaving him
eight strokes behind leader
Michael Putnam.
Even though this score
is the worst Ive had in a
long time, in months, Im
excited about my game and
getting back out tomorrow,
Mickelson said. I cant wait
to get started again, because
I just feel like I played a little
tight today, kind of steered it
a little bit.
Adams had a 64 on PGA
Wests Jack Nicklaus Private
Course in his return from hip
replacement surgery. He last
played a PGA Tour event in
March and had surgery in
July.
Very, very blessed to be
back out here, Adams said.
Its been a long road to get
back. You never know what
youre going to get when
you have total hip replacement.
The 39-year-old Adams
had six straight birdies from
No. 14 to No. 1, added three
in a row on Nos. 5-7 and
closed with a bogey. Playing
on a major medical extension, he has 16 events to

earn $497,044 to keep his

tour card.
Mickelson opened at treelined La Quinta Country
Club. He made a 12-foot
birdie putt on the par-3 third,
holed out for birdie from
a greenside bunker on the
par-4 fourth and made a
15-foot birdie putt on the
par-5 sixth. After dropping
shots on Nos. 12,
14 and 16, Lefty
hit a wedge to 2
feet for birdie on
the par-4 17th.
The 44-yearold Mickelson,
the 2002 and
2004 champion,
is winless in 27
PGA Tour starts
since the 2013
British Open. He has lost
weight and gained strength
working with trainer Sean
Cochran during the long
break from competition.
My body hasnt felt this
good in years, Mickelson
added.
Putnam made nine birdies
in an 11-hole stretch in his
63. He birdied Nos. 7, 9 and
10 on the Nicklaus course
and ran off six in a row on
Nos. 12-17.
The course is in perfect shape, Putnam said.
Greens are good. I made
a lot of birdies at the end.
Hit a lot of close shots, a lot
of 5-, 10-foot putts. I made
them all, so I got to be happy
about that.
Mark Wilson, John
Peterson, Francesco Molinari

and Scott Pinckney matched

Adams at 64. Wilson and
Peterson played the Nicklaus
course, Molinari opened on
the Arnold Palmer Private
Course and Pinckney was at
La Quinta.
The 40-year-old Wilson
won the 2012 tournament
for the last of his five PGA
Tour titles.
I came in feeling
OK, nothing great
about the game, but
it was ideal today,
Wilson said. I made
some saves when I
needed it and capitalized on my good
shots.
Defending champion Patrick Reed
had a 65 at La
Quinta. Hes coming off a
playoff victory over Jimmy
Walker two weeks ago in
Hawaii in the Tournament of
Champions. Last year, Reed
shot three 63s to open a seven-shot lead and closed with
a 71 for a 2-stroke victory.
I feel like I left a lot out
there but its always good to

Irvin goes from question

mark to key starter for Seattle
Associated Press
RENTON, Wash. Every now and then, even during
games sometimes, Bruce Irvin will be overwhelmed by
gratitude.
Hell remember the two weeks he spent in an Atlanta
jail as a teenager. Hell think about turning his life
around and becoming a junior college football standout,
only to lack the money to continue in school.
And, of course, Irvin will remember all the criticism
that was directed toward the Seattle Seahawks when
they decided to make him the No. 15 pick of the 2012
draft.
Sometimes Ill be in a game during a timeout break
looking at the crowd and think,
Dang, a lot of people said I
wouldnt be here. Sometimes I
thought about myself I wouldnt
be more than what I was, Irvin
said. Its a blessing. I thank
God every day. Lord knows I was supposed to be
in jail or dead. Just for me to be able to practice every
day and come out here and watch film is a blessing. I
try and make the most of letting the guys know it aint
guaranteed.
Once considered to be a risky draft choice who could
only be a pass rusher in the NFL, Irvin has developed
into an every down linebacker who rarely leaves the
field. On first and second downs, Irvin is a strongside
linebacker who plays on the line of scrimmage.
During passing situations, Irvin gets to put his hand
on the ground and do his favorite thing in football, rush
the quarterback.
Its a scenario that works for the Seahawks and one
no one could have anticipated when Irvin entered the
NFL.
It makes me happy. That was the biggest knock on
me that I was situational and I couldnt play the run,
Irvin said. These coaches, Pete (Carroll) and (general
manager) John (Schneider), they never wavered, they
never pulled the plug on me and they kept believing
in me. I cant ask for a better supporting cast and
a better situation than the one Im in right now. I just
have to continue to keep getting better and not let those
guys down.
Irvin is at the end of his third season but early in Year
2 his future seemed in question. He had played mostly
as an undersized pass-rushing defensive end his rookie
season and while he was successful at getting to the
quarterback, he also got pushed around in run defense.
Seattles coaches wanted to keep it simple for him at
first and not push him to learn multiple positions.
When we went after him, we thought he would be a
very special pass rusher because of his terrific speed,
Carroll said. We thought he would have the ability
to do other things beyond that and in time, it took us
a little while, we tried to make it easy for him at first
and left him at the Leo spot. As we grew with him, we
expanded with him.
Seattle started transitioning Irvin to linebacker at
the start of his second season. He was suspended four
games for using performance-enhancing substances but
Seattle stuck with its plan. The Seahawks were convinced their best defensive alignment was with K.J.
Wright at weakside linebacker and Irvin as their future
on the strongside.
Irvin believes that if he was with any other team,
hed still just be a situational player.
Irvin is far from a finished product as a linebacker
but hes managed to retain his pass-rush ability. Irvin
finished second in the regular season with seven sacks
for Seattle and hell likely be getting plenty of opportunities to try to get to Tom Brady against New England in
the Super Bowl. When the teams played during the 2012
season in Seattle, the Patriots put the ball in the air 58
times, although their run game is more consistent now.
Ken Norton Jr., making the decision to make me a
linebacker, that probably saved my career, Irvin added.
I always would have been an undersized defensive end.
I would rather be a big linebacker than a small defensive end. I think the transition was smart.
AP Source: NFL fines Lynch $20,000 for obscene
gesture: The NFL has fined Seahawks running back
Marshawn Lynch $20,000 for making an obscene gesture during last Sundays NFC championship game, a
person with knowledge of the fine told The Associated
Press on Thursday.
The league did not specify what the gesture was in
the win over Green Bay but Lynch grabbed his crotch
after scoring a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. Lynch was fined $11,000 for a similar gesture in
Seattles win over Arizona on Dec. 21.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because
the fine has not been publicly announced.
Lynch has a history of drawing fines from the NFL,
mostly for not talking to the media as required under
his contract. He was fined $50,000 in November for
repeated violations of the leagues media policy. At
that time, the league collected a $50,000 fine that was
imposed against Lynch for violations in 2013. That fine
from 2013 was held in anticipation of future cooperation from Lynch cooperation that has not occurred.
At last Januarys Super Bowl media day in New
Jersey, Lynch spent the session behind a barrier talking
with teammates, autographing a football a young fan
threw to him and speaking only to NFL Networks
Deion Sanders and to Armed Forces Radio. He ignored
many other questions asked from a distance by reporters
and also left for a short while before returning.
The league and the Seahawks are discussing Lynchs
requirements for next Tuesdays media day.

4-time NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon ending career after 15

By JENNA FRYER
Associated Press
Jeff Gordon, with a nagging
back injury, a young family he
wanted to spend more time with
and a phenom waiting in the wings
at Hendrick Motorsports, knew
midway through last season that he
had one more year in him.
NASCARs most charismatic
driver, the man behind the wheel
of the famed and sometimes feared
No. 24, had decided it was time
to call it quits on one of the most
successful careers in motorsports
history. The 4-time champion conferred with Rick Hendrick, the
only team owner he has had over
23 years of Sprint Cup racing, and
settled on a date.
The
43-year-old
Gordon
announced Thursday that 2015
will be his final season as a fulltime driver, saddening legions of
fans, fellow drivers and others
who watched him became the face
of stock car racing as the sport
exploded in popularity a generation
ago.
In an interview with The
Associated Press, Gordon said he
reached his decision last summer.
He had seen other drivers embark
on distracting farewell tours and
he didnt want to be that guy.
Although he told his crew chief of
his decision after narrowly missing
out on shot at a fifth championship,
it took time to settle on the day to
tell the world.
It started with a conversation
with his two young children when
they woke up for school. They
worried they wont go to the race
track anymore, that other kids
might think of them differently if

their father is not a famous race

car driver.
The conversation with Ella and
Leo made the decision a reality for
Gordon and he wept.
Ella just stared at me; shed
never seen me cry like that before,
Gordon told AP. After that, I seriously broke down. It hit me like a
ton of bricks and I got so emotional
and thought, How am I going to
get through this day?
Gordon said he sobbed during
the entire 30-minute drive to
Hendrick Motorsports, where he
tearfully informed his team and his
longtime employees of his decision. Gordon choked back tears
yet again during his interview with
AP when his mother sent him a
text message that he read aloud: I
never knew watching SportsCenter
could be so emotional.
Im emotional because I am
so proud, Gordon said. Its all I
ever wanted, to be a race car driver.
And here Ive lived this incredible
dream and yet that chapter of my
life has been fulfilled and its now
time to go to the next step and the
next chapter.
He made a point to say he didnt
use the word retirement because
he could still drive again after this
season.
Gordons 92 wins trail only
Hall-of-Fame drivers Richard Petty
(200) and David Pearson (105).
His fame reaches far beyond the
track and resonates with non-sports
fans. He won all the big races, collected four championships in just
seven years and had 58 victories
before his 30th birthday.
He was a new breed of driver
when he broke into NASCARs
top series, arriving with a sprint car

We have too good of shooters (to

were able to get some looks at the elbow.
We got some of those to fall and we
were able to knock down some threes.
Lincolnview didnt back down, however. despite the deficit, the Lancers
came out aggressively in the fourth
and finally began to hit some perimeter
jumpers. Ashton Bowersock hit from

low post. An Alana Williams baseline

final quarter and prompted a Crestview

They went the final four minutes without a score as LCC
erected a 12-5 edge on a Verhoff bomb from the right corner
with 40 ticks showing.
Delphos tried three defenses overall: man, 1-2-2 zone and
even a box-and-1 on Verhoff; and they contained her some
only two treys in the second period. Unfortunately,
Stolly got hot, drilling 11 markers. The Red and White tried
to keep pace as Culp (8 points in the stanza) got some help
from Wallace (3) and Taylor Stroh and Heather Pohlman (2
each). They were within 22-18 on a Pohlman putback at 2:26
but LCC outscored them 7-2 the rest of the half. That included
two free tosses from Stolly with 11.2 ticks on the board for a
29-20 halftime score.
LCC took command in the third canto, outscoring their
guests 21-7. They limited Delphos to five Culp markers and
a deuce by Jessica Pimpas on 3-of-9 shooting. On the other
end, they canned 8-of-19 nine from Verhoff, six by Stolly
and two bombs by Santaguida helped by nine offensive
rebounds in the canto. When Verhoff put back a third-chance
basket with a second left, their lead was 50-27.
LCCs lead reached as high as the final score as some of

Bowersocks primary defender was
Paige Motycka.
Thats why Paige stayed in during
the second half, was for the defensive
side, Rickard explained. She had a
good offensive game but she was doing
such a good job against Bowersock that
we were going to keep her on the floor.
The Crestview junior varsity also
escaped Middle Point with a win on
Thursday, topping the Lancers 40-38.
Ally McCoy led the Knights with 16
points while Alana Williams paced
Lincolnview with 14. Also in double
figures for the Lancer JV was Alena
Looser, who scored 10 in the loss.

When you lose a girl like Jessica

Geise, it takes away part of your game
plan. She is a nice inside player for us,
St. Johns coach Dan Grothouse said. The
difference in the two halves is we scored
in the first half. In the second half, they
pick up their defense a little bit more and
we had some open looks and they didnt
go down. We gave up way to many offensive rebounds and I think that shot at the
end of the third quarter was big; it kind of
took the air out of the room for us.

Jays
(Continued from page 6)

the most high-profile marriage the

sport had ever seen. Gordon and
the former Brooke Sealey split
in 2002. He found happiness and
the desire to start a family when
he married Ingrid Vandebosch in
2006.
I want to be with my kids, he
told AP. Im seeing them grow
up before my eyes and Im never
here.
Gordon will now take one final
victory lap around the circuit with
drivers such as reigning Sprint Cup
rookie of the year Kyle Larson,
who routinely posts childhood photos of himself in Gordon gear.
Jeff Gordon is a hero to a lot
of kids and the driver I personally
looked up to as a kid, Larson said.
Hes a hero of mine.
Although no replacement for
Gordon has been announced, the
next driver of the No. 24 will most
certainly be reigning Xfinity Series
champion Chase Elliott. With a full
roster of four drivers, Hendrick has
been handcuffed in what he can do
with the 19-year-old phenom.
Gordon has won at every track
on the Sprint Cup circuit except
Kentucky Speedway. His four
championships trail only teammate Jimmie Johnson, a six-time
champ, for most among active
drivers. Petty and Earnhardt each
won seven.
Theres simply no way to
quantify Jeffs impact, Hendrick
added. Hes one of the biggest
sports stars of a generation and his
contributions to the success and
growth of NASCAR are unsurpassed. Theres been no better
ambassador for stock car racing
and no greater representation of
what a champion should be.

double figures as Hays had a game-high

15 points.
We hoped that someone coming off
the bench you know Bekah (Fischer)
and Sam (Kramer) off the bench did a
good job, Coach Grothouse added. But
when you lose someone like Jessica, its
hard to find someone to replace her. You
just need other people to step up and you
know it was only a 2-point game at the
half. And the second half, we just didnt
keep up scoring-wise with them.
The Lady Rangers had two scorers
with double digit points as Schroer had
13 points and Reineke chipped in with

10 points.
St. Johns drops to 6-8 on the year
and 1-4 in the MAC. New Knoxville
improves to 10-3 on the year and 4-1 in
the MAC.

I am extremely uncomfortable

want to make waves because this person has been here a lot longer than I

Am I being silly? Would it be improper to ask my supervisor to move

deal that I will have to give a reason.

so I advise against it.

DEAR DOCTOR
K: My sister was just
diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Can you tell
me more about this
condition?
DEAR
READER: Fibromyalgia is
a somewhat controversial condition, although less so than it
was 20 years ago. It
causes pain, aches and
stiffness in muscles
and joints throughout the body. Patients
also feel unusually
tired. The results of
common blood tests,
X-rays and other tests
are usually normal for
people with fibromyalgia, but depression
and anxiety are also
more common.
Some doctors believe that the symptoms of fibromyalgia
are explained by these
psychological condi-

tions. I think the evidence increasingly

indicates that fibromyalgia is an illness
with real underlying
physical causes.
A
characteristic
feature of fibromyalgia is pain and stiffness that occur in
specific spots along
the body, called tender points. The area
between the shoulder
blades and the bottom
of the neck tends to
be the most painful.
In people with fibromyalgia, only certain spots are tender;
pushing on other parts
of the body does not
cause pain. (Ive put
an illustration of tender points along the
body on my website,
AskDoctorK.com.)

are stimulated. Those
nerves send chemical
signals to a part of
the brain where pain
is felt. Doctors and
scientists are beginning to unravel the
chemistry of pain.
To manage the
pain, doctors recommend over-the-counter pain relievers.
Examples
include
acetaminophen (Tylenol),
ibuprofen
(Motrin, Advil) and
naproxen (Aleve). A
doctor also prescribe
a muscle relaxant or
antidepressant to relieve pain. Doctors
can treat the condition with these drugs:
cyclobenzaprine, amitriptyline and gabapentin.
In recent years, the
FDA has approved
three drugs to treat
fibromyalgia. One is
pregabalin (Lyrica),
an
anticonvulsant
drug. The other two
are
antidepressant
drugs,
duloxetine
(Cymbalta) and milnacipran (Savella).
But medications
are often ineffective.
Non-drug treatments
are more likely to
help. Heat and massage, for example, can
provide
short-term
pain relief.

also relieve muscle
pain and tenderness.

and
stretching exercises
can help build muscle
and improve flexibility. Tai chi and yoga,
both mind-body exercises, are also excellent options.
Finally,
better

relieve
symptoms.
To sleep better, she
should avoid (or cut
down on) caffeine,
not exercise late in the
day, and avoid fluids
late in the evening.
If her symptoms
do not improve, she
might consider acupuncture,
massage
therapy, biofeedback,
group therapy or
stress management.
We still do not
know the underlying
cause of fibromyalgia,
but we are discovering underlying changes in body chemistry
related to the symptoms. As that knowledge advances, so will
the treatment.

Q: In vaudeville, there was a performer who

billed himself as the Perfect Fool. Do you
know who he was? -- T.E., Rockland, Maine
A: Perfect Fool Isaiah Edwin Leopold was
born in Philadelphia on Nov. 9, 1886, to a European immigrant family. As a child, Leopold
would often perform for
customers in his fathers
millinery shop. In his midteens, Isaiah began to perform on stage, a profession
that so troubled his father
he asked his son to change
his name so as not to bring
shame to his family. He
split his middle name, Edwin, to Ed Wynn and went
Ed Wynn
on to enjoy a successful career in vaudeville, radio and television.
In time, his humor became outdated, and he
was no longer in demand. At the urging of his
actor son, Keenan Wynn, he took up serious
acting and became a great character actor. He
was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar in 1959 for his role as Mr. Dussell in Anne
Frank. He also voiced the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland and played Uncle Albert in
Mary Poppins. Ed Wynn died in 1966.
Q: What does the K in Kmart stand for?
-- O.Z., Glide, Ore.
A: It stands for the companys founder, Sebastian S. Kresge. Kresge opened the first S.S.
Kresge five-and-dime store in 1899 in Detroit.
The first Kmart opened in 1962 in Garden City,
Mich. The worlds largest Kmart is located in
Guam.
Q: In the 1960s, I bought my boyfriend a
bottle of aftershave for Christmas. I remember
the advertising slogan, Be careful how you
use it. I dont remember the name of the aftershave. Do you? By the way, the boyfriend
became my husband. -- W.K.S., Salisbury, Md.
A: The aftershave was Hai Karate. The lemon-lime lotion also came with self-defense instructions in how the wearer could fight off the
hordes of women who would be in pursuit. Hai
Karate faded away in the 1980s.
Q: How long has the parking meter been
around? What city was the first to install the
meter? -- I.J., Andrews, Md.
A: You can give credit -- or blame -- for the
parking meter to lawyer and publisher Carlton
Magee of Oklahoma City. In July 1935, Oklahoma City became the first city to install the
parking meter, which cost a nickel an hour,
which is equivalent to about 85 cents today.
Q: The original cast of the TV sitcom Seinfeld was supposed to have only three main
characters. The fourth was added later. Who
was the afterthought? -- T.K., Morris, Conn.
A: Elaine Benes, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, was added after the pilot. Network
execs thought a female would add a different
perspective to the all-male cast.
Q: When did Time magazine start naming a
person of the year? -- K.L., Waterford, N.Y.
A: Time magazine originally started with a
Man of the Year in 1927. The first honored
person was Charles Lindbergh, the aviator who
made the first solo flight across the Atlantic
Ocean. The title was finally changed to Person
of the Year in 1999.

GOP pushes abortion

Atomic Scientists: Were
through House on
getting even closer to doomsday bill
March for Life Day
Associated Press
WASHINGTON The Bulletin
of the Atomic Scientists says Earth is
now closer to human-caused doomsday
than it has been in more than 30 years
because of global warming and nuclear
weaponry. But other experts say thats
way too gloomy.
The advocacy group founded by the
creators of the atomic bomb moved their
famed Doomsday Clock ahead two
minutes on Thursday. It said the world
is now three minutes from a catastrophic
midnight, instead of five minutes.
This is about doomsday; this is
about the end of civilization as we know
it, bulletin executive director Kennette
Benedict said at a news conference in
Washington.
She called both climate change and
modernization of nuclear weaponry
equal but undeniable threats to humanitys continued existence that triggered
the 20 scientists on the board to decide
to move the clock closer to midnight.
The probability of global catastrophe is very high, and the actions needed

to reduce the risks of disaster must be

taken very soon, Benedict said.
But other scientists arent quite so
pessimistic.
Michael Oppenheimer, a professor
of both geosciences and international
affairs at Princeton University, said in
an email: I suspect that humans will
muddle through the climate situation
much as we have muddled through the
nuclear weapons situation limiting
the risk with cooperative international
action and parallel domestic policies.
The bulletin has included climate
change in its doomsday clock since
2007.
The fact that the Doomsday
clock-setters changed their definition
of doomsday shows how profoundly
the world has changed they have
to find a new source of doom because
global thermonuclear war is now so
unlikely, Harvard psychologist Steven
Pinker wrote in an email. Pinker in his
book The Better Angels of our Nature
uses statistics to argue that the world
has become less war-like, less violent
and more tolerant in recent decades and

centuries.
Richard Somerville, a member of
the Bulletins board who is a climate
scientist at the Scripps Institution of
Oceanography, said the trend in
heat-trapping emissions from the burning of fossil fuels will lead to major
climatic disruption globally. The urgency has nothing to do with politics or ideology. It arises from the laws of physics
and biology and chemistry. These laws
are non-negotiable.
But Somerville agreed that the threat
from climate change isnt quite as all-ornothing as it is with nuclear war.
Even with the end of the cold war,
the lack of progress in the dismantling of
nuclear weapons and countries like the
United States and Russia spending hundreds of billions of dollars on modernizing nuclear weaponry makes an atomic
bomb explosion either accidental or
on purpose a continuing and more
urgent threat, Benedict said.
But Benedict did acknowledge the

Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush moving

toward clash in New Hampshire
CONCORD, N.H. (AP)
Mitt Romney launched
his last campaign for president at a New Hampshire
farm, relied upon a New
Hampshire victory to fuel
his strategy to win the nomination and even posed the
photos of his last family Christmas card on the
shores of a New Hampshire
lake where he still owns a
home.
But whatever home-field
advantage the Republican
Partys 2012 nominee might
have in New Hampshire
is fading as the campaign
begins in earnest, as Florida
Gov. Jeb Bush and other
potential GOP candidates
for president seek support
among establishment-minded donors, elected officials
and voters in the nations
first primary state.
There is not a clear
frontrunner in this race,
said
New
Hampshire
Republican Party Chairman
and former Romney backer
Jennifer Horn. Its a new
cycle, its a new slate of
candidates, and hes going
to have to work really hard
to earn the votes one by one
just like everyone else.
And without a win in
New Hampshire, Romney
faces a much tougher path
to claim the GOPs presidential nomination for the
second straight election.
Because hes run twice,
because he does have a residence in New Hampshire,
because he does spend a lot
of time in New Hampshire,

from a strategic standpoint,

it does become increasingly
important for him to win
New Hampshire, said the
states only Republican congressman, Frank Guinta.
Guinta spoke with Bush
last week for 20 minutes,
but has yet to hear from
Romney and he isnt
alone. Bush began courting
Republican leaders in the
state by phone last week,
his first formal movement
in New Hampshire, and he
is planning a trip there soon.
Bush and Romney huddled privately in Utah on
Thursday, a friendly meeting aides said was planned
before Romney re-entered
the 2016 discussion. I
admire him a lot, Bush
told KUTV as he arrived at
the Salt Lake City airport.
Hes a great American.
Advisers for both men
downplay suggestions of
bad blood, but there is little
doubt they would rely on the
same group of supporters
to win in New Hampshire
and elsewhere. Bush has
also recently reached out
to donors in Massachusetts,
where Romney served as
governor, and Utah, where
Romney now resides,
raising money on whats
unquestionably the 2012
nominees home turf.
Bush knows what it takes
to run in New Hampshire,
said Joel Maiola, a veteran
Republican operative who
led New Hampshire efforts
for former President George
W. Bush in 2000 and sup-

ported Romney in 2012. He

said Jeb Bush would enter a
New Hampshire race with
both the benefit of name
recognition and his brothers and fathers previous
campaigns in the state.
Thats a learning experience that Jeb Bush remembers, Maiola said.
New Hampshire has long
embraced fiscally-focused
Republicans over the social
conservatives who typically fare well in Iowa and
South Carolina, two of the
states that, along with New
Hampshire and Nevada,
hold the first four votes at
the start of the primary season.
Romney would join a
field likely to include several Republicans who fit that
mold, including Bush, New
Jersey Gov. Chris Christie
and Wisconsin Gov. Scott
Walker, who on Thursday
announced plans to visit the
state for the first time in
March.
I continue to think that
Chris Christie really is in
that ideological sweet spot
of the New Hampshire
primary electorate, said
Fergus Cullen, a former
chairman of the state GOP.
I think Jeb Bush is, too,
and Romney, by virtue of
his past performance, clearly is as well.
Should any of those three
finish in third place, Cullen
said, they would lose the
game of musical chairs
early in the process and
there might not be room for

them to go on.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul,
who has already begun hiring staff in New Hampshire,
also has natural advantages
in a state with some libertarian leanings. In an interview
with The Associated Press,
Paul said theres probably a limit to how many
times Romney can depend
on New Hampshires voters
to enthusiastically embrace
his candidacy.
I think he and Bush will
split a lot of the moderate
vote, Paul said. And so, I
think that in the end, itll be
a brand new game.
While Paul noted Romney
is likely have enough money
and campaign infrastructure
to fight deep into the primary calendar, he suggested
as did Cullen and several
Republican operatives
that Romney needs to win
early to survive politically.
Hed be done for if he
doesnt win one of the first
four (states), Paul said.
While Romney appears
unable to bank that his ties
to the state will yield an
easy win in New Hampshire,
thats not to say there isnt
lingering goodwill for the
candidate who finished a
strong second in 2008 and
won the 2012 primary.
Said Beverly Bruce, New
Hampshire finance director
for Romneys 2012 campaign: There are an awful
lot of us that have been
wishing and hoping. A lot
of people are waiting in the
wings.

A couple months ago, so that you
could get to know the personnel
here at the shop, we featured Becky
Strayer, our executive director and
social services director. This month,
weve spotlighted Mary Jo Behrns.
Mary Jo, like Becky, also wears multiple hats to assist with running an
efficient shop. As an Administrative
assistant, she answers the phone,
jointly counts monies with the executive director from weekly sales, and
sends all the thank you, sympathy,
get well, and other correspondence.
She provides various clerical duties
such as filing, putting information on
financial comparison charts, and the

monthly reports on the computer.

Mary Jo has been with the Thrift shop
for four years. She says the best thing
about her job is the great group of people she works with, as well as the clients
of the Thrift Shop. She is known as our
social butterfly.
Mary Jo also wears the hat of social
services assistant. Working closely with
Becky, she loves helping the clients with
their various financial and food assistance. This position was just a recently-created job to help the director with
all the new and many existing clients.
Mary Jo schedules all appointments for
Becky, maintains client files and information and gets groceries from the food
pantry ready for clients to pick up. She is
assisted by Mary Agnes Bergfeld, who

keeps the Food Pantry in immaculate

condition. Another duty Mary Jo has is
to take care of the request forms and the
computer reports for each client.
Mary Jo is a great asset to the Thrift
Shop, and has an infectious smile and
laugh that can light up the room and
your day. We thank her for all she does.
If youd like to be a part of the
great group of volunteers here at the
Shop; whether its an hour or two, a
whole morning, or an afternoon, please
give our volunteer coordinator, Barb
Haggard, a call at 419-692-2942. Shell
work with you to get the time best suited
to fit with your schedule.
Until the next time, thats this months
report.

WASHINGTON (AP)
With thousands of abortion
protesters swarming the city
in their annual March for
Life, Republicans muscled
broadened abortion restrictions through the House on
Thursday after a GOP rebellion forced leaders into an
awkward retreat on an earlier
version.
By a near party-line 242179 vote, the House voted
to permanently forbid federal
funds for most abortion coverage. The bill would also
block tax credits for many
people and employers who
buy abortion coverage under
President Barack Obamas
health care overhaul.
A White House veto threat
and an uncertain fate in the
Senate mean the legislation
has no realistic chance of
becoming law. But on a day
when crowds of anti-abortion
demonstrators stretched for
blocks outside Capitol windows and hours after the
embarrassing GOP stumble
on another abortion measure Thursdays vote let
party leaders signal that the

Congress they now command

is at least trying to end abortion.
The GOPs passage of one
bill and the abrupt derailment
of another forbidding most
late-term abortions underscored the partys perilous
balancing act of backing
abortion restrictions crucial
to conservatives while not
alienating women and younger voters wary of such restrictions.
Obama, out West to promote his State of the Union
economic agenda, embraced
the same 1973 Supreme Court
decision legalizing abortion
that the protesters were vilifying.
He said the decision in the
Roe v. Wade case reaffirms a
fundamental American value:
that government should not
intrude in our most private
and personal family matters.
He said the House-passed
bill would intrude on womens reproductive freedom
and access to health care and
unnecessarily restrict the private insurance choices that
consumers have today.

Measles outbreak casts spotlight

on anti-vaccine movement
LOS ANGELES (AP) A major measles outbreak traced
to Disneyland has brought criticism down on the small but
vocal movement among parents to opt out of vaccinations for
their children.
In a rash of cases that public health officials are rushing to
contain, at least 70 people in six states and Mexico have fallen
ill since mid-December, most of them from California. The
vast majority of those who got sick had not gotten the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine.
While still a scourge in many corners of the world, measles
has been all but eradicated in the U.S. since 2000 because of
vaccinations. But the virus has made a comeback in recent
years, in part because of people obtaining personal belief
exemptions from rules that say children must get their shots to
enroll in school.
Others have delayed getting their children vaccinated
because they still believe now-discredited research linking the
measles vaccine to autism.
Some people are just incredibly selfish by skipping
shots, said Dr. James Cherry, a pediatric disease expert at the
University of California, Los Angeles.
As cases mount, several newspapers have criticized the
anti-vaccine movement.
Measles is a disease that has been beaten by modern medicine. That makes it all the more frustrating that anti-science
stubbornness has proven, in the case of the Disneyland-related
measles, that when it comes to contagious diseases, its a small
world after all, the Los Angeles Times said in an editorial last
week.
Barbara Loe Fisher, director of the National Vaccine
Information Center, a Virginia-based nonprofit that favors
letting parents decide whether to vaccinate, said, I dont think
its wise or responsible to blame unvaccinated people for
the Disney outbreak. She noted that a small number of those
stricken had been fully vaccinated.
