modo Preset Library

v1.0

modo Preset Library

Background Information
This library represents a collection of presets used in Luxologys modo (Current version
203) which has been worked on at Null studios | institute as well as the Vertex Monkey
Collection for the sake of convenience to the users. The presets span materials, lights,
cameras, environments, resolutions and any preset enabled item in modo. The purpose
of this project is to collect, optimize, build and maintain a growing number of presets in
one downloadable package that updates per version i.e. x01, x02, x03.

Scene Information
There are four separate scene each for a specific
Preset type, but overall they have the same relative
structure. There is NullPresets.lxo for Material Presets,
NullPresetGems.lxo for faceted Gem like materials,
NullPresetEnvironment.lxo for Environmental Presets
and NullPresetLights.lxo for Light Presets. The Material
Preset scene has 3 items, two lights and one camera.
All the Scenes contain a sphere which is 5cm in radius
which means the total height is 10cm. There are also 3
shaders one for each item, under the three groups.
There are no images attached to the default scene.
There is both reflective and specular properties turned
on in the scene by default. Specular highlight using a
light and reflecting mesh.

Naming Structure
Although this may not apply to every single preset,
but there is a general file name structure
beginning with material type i.e. Metal, Liquid,
Fabric, continuing with type i.e. Gold, Water, Silk
and possibly ending with description i.e. Brushed,
Turbulent, Smooth. Vertex Monkey Presets have
the authors initials attached to the end and an
index of the authors can be found in the copyright
section of this document.

Contribution
If you feel you can contribute a good preset to share with the community, then you can
use the scene file provided and apply that material, then save out the preset and submit
it to either Vertex Monkey info@vertexmonkey.com, which will remain the go to place for
individual presets, or to presets@null.jo in order to add the preset to the next library
version update. The more presets we share the more we can learn and the better our
experience will become.
If you have any comments, suggestions, feature requests please feel free to write to
presets@null.jo.

The Future
While I cant say what the future holds here a few things to work on for the next version
or the one after. If someone feels they can help out, then please dont hesitate to
contact us.

Acknowledgment
This wouldnt have been possible without the wonderful modo community and its
generous spirit and for contributing all the presets on VertexMonkey. Special thanks
goes to Steve McRae for maintaining http://www.vertexmonkey.com and hosting all the
presets and scripts as well as collecting all the tutorial links in one categorized area as
well having his Nurble as the starting point for the test scene. Gwynne Reddick for his
elegant script mmPresetshelf. Alessandro Fontana for his little gem of an app, LXP
Thumb patcher which gave all the presets their nice icons. And finally the beta testers
for being kind enough to put in their precious time to help me figure out what I did wrong
and how to get it right.
