GRAYLING The
Boyne City boys basketball
team got 24 points, six
boards and three steals
from senior Corey Redman
as the Ramblers defeated
host Grayling 65-50 in a
Lake Michigan Conference
showdown on January 16.
The Ramblers would
have to dig their way out of
a 17-10 first quarter deficit
to pull even at 31 points
apiece at intermission before taking a 46-36 lead into
the fourth quarter.
We started a little slow,
Boyne City coach Nick

Redman said. We made

some adjustments after the
first quarter and Im proud
of how the guys responded
and played three real good
quarters of basketball to
earn a big road win.
Cole Butler added a double-double for Boyne, netting 11 points and hauling
in 15 rebounds, while
Michael Dohm added 13
points and six rebounds;
Tanner Kruzel had nine
points and nine boards and
Zach Napont chipped in
with eight points and four
steals.
Cole (Butler) and
Michael (Dohm) played
real well for us down the
stretch as well, the coach
added. Great team effort.
Scout Tobin led Grayling
scored 13 points.
The Ramblers improved
to 4-2 overall, 2-1 conference with the win.

CHARLEVOIX The
Charlevoix Rayders boys
basketball team used a
strong defensive scheme to
go with their timely offense in downing Harbor
Springs 61-37 for their first
victory of the season on
January 16.
The defensive minded
Rayders limited the Rams
to only 11 first half points
as their full court pressure
disrupted Harbors ability

to get the ball across the

timeline and get into their
offense.
Big man Austin Putman
finished with 14 points to
lead Charlevoix, while
Nate Moon and Kevin
Pearl added 10 points
apiece. Walker Drost had
eight and Kenen Borths
chipped in with seven for
the Rayders.
Harbor Springs, 2-3 overall, 0-3 conference, got 10
points from Michael
Erxleben and eight from
Mark Leonard.
Charlevoix improves to
(1-5, 1-2) with the win.

By Chris Fiel

east Jordan 56, t.C. St. Francis 26

TRAVERSE CITY East Jordan continued to show just why they are a top team
that needs to be contended with in Class C
as the third ranked Red Devils rolled past
Traverse City St. Francis 56-26 on January
16.
The Red Devils (playing for the first time
since December 19) took a while to get untracked on the offensive end, but brought a
strong defensive presence as they took a 154 advantage through one quarter of play.
EJ then played even with the Glads in the
second quarter in taking a 24-13 at the
break. The Red Devils would then outscore
TCSF by 18 in the third quarter for a 44-15
cushion headed into the final eight minutes
of the contest.
Jordan Weber would score a game-high 26
points in leading the Red Devils, while
Colin Petrie had a well rounded game with
15 points, eight assists, six boards and five
steals.
Collin Bajko chipped in with eight points
and seven boards for East Jordan, 5-0 overall, 3-0 conference.
Michael Hozoweld led St. Francis with
seven points.

HARBOR SPRINGS Boyne Falls got

33 points, 12 rebounds and four assists
from Marcus Matelski as the junior
helped lead the Loggers to a 67-27 Northern Lakes Conference win over Harbor
Light on January 15.
Boyne Falls led at the quarter breaks;
11-6, 30-10 and 47-18.
We struggled most of the night shooting the ball. We were rusty with the snow
days and extra time off, Boyne Falls
coach Tim Smith said. We still played
well defensively and that was able to pull
us through.
Andrew Stevens added 11 points and
eight assists and Andrew Campbell finished with seven points for the Loggers.
Lucas Mathews and Adam Skop had 15
and 10 points respectfully for the Swordsmen.
We had three guys play well off the
bench in; Hunter Williams, Josh Lange
and Tyler Bearss. The trio scored a combined 12 points and we really played well
with all three guys on floor, Smith
added.
Boyne Falls improves to 4-0 overall on
the season.

Five Key Areas to Pay Attention to

When Buying a Home
Compliments of Mike Stark,
Coldwell Banker Schmidt realtors
east Jordan. (231) 536-7700

Part 1 of 2
Looking for a new home
can be exciting and frustrating. You can help alleviate the frustration by
paying close attention to
five key areas of the homes
youre considering buying;
it may save you money in
the long run.
There are five areas in
homes that he frequently
reports problems with.
They are electrical, foundation, plumbing, the attic,
and landscaping.

ElEctrical
Walker says sometimes
homeowners assume with
newer homes that all will
work just fine but thats

often not the case. I [inspected] a brand new house

four years old but the
electrical was all done incorrectly, says Walker.
Having a complete home
inspection will help to rule
out any problems and point
out any areas of concern.
However, even as youre
browsing homes, buyers
can start to make note of
the key areas that Walker
mentioned, such as the
foundation.

Foundation
Walker says a four-yearold home he inspected recently was already showing
trouble signs which could
result in a costly repair
project. It was a model

home. What [the homeowners] did was plant trees for

shade to make it look really
nice, but they planted the
wrong trees and theyre
going to crack the foundation and its going to cut the
property value down by
$50,000, says Walker.
Walker says in the case of
that home, the trees were
causing micro-fractures in
the tile in various locations
of the home. As you walk
through the house, 21 feet
in and 30 feet deep, theres
just too much root invasion
and its going to ruin their
tile, explains Walker.
He says some tell-tale
signs with this home were
the minor cracks in the
foundation that were causing a lifting and separation

of the foundation. Also, the

windows were not opening
and closing properly,
which means the foundation is moving.
However, just because
you see cracks doesnt
mean there is a foundation
problem. Most people
dont understand that there
are natural cracks in a
house. Thats why when we
do an inspection report we
have to look at it and say
Okay, this is a typical crack
and this one is an untypical
crack, says Walker. He
says some cracks may lead
to other problems while
others wont.

ELLSWORTH The
Lady Lancers played in
front of the home crowd
for only the second time
this season and they did
not disappoint in downing Alanson 43-24 in a
Northern Lakes Conference contest on January
20.
The girls looked really good, Ellsworth
coach Brenda Stevens
said. We started out in a
press and fell back to half
court and the girls
played real good half
court defense.
Amanda Veenstra led
the Lady Lancers with 14
points and 10 rebounds,
While Katelyn Sowers
added 12 points and 12

boards as Ellsworth
clamped down on defense after leading 23-18
at halftime.

WOLVERINE The
Lady Lancers used a
stong second half as they
outscored the Wildcats

Northern Lakes Conference victory on January
14.
The girls played real
good defense and executed our press well,
Lancers coach Brenda
Stevens said.

rebounds, four steals and
four assists to lead
Ellsworth, while
Amanda Veenstra added
10 points.
Katelyn Sowers had 14

ALANSON The

Alanson 54-45 in a Northern Lakes Conference

battle on January 15.

The two teams took

game wasnt decided

Lady Red Devils drop pair

TRAVERSE CITY The
East Jordan Lady Red Devils
kept things close for the first
16 minutes of play, but were
unable to sustain that momentum as they fell to the
Gladiators 54-31 in a Lake
Michigan Conference on
January 16.
We played a very good
first half and had the lead a
couple of times, East Jordan coach Steve Hines said.
We slowed the tempo down
and handled their press with
limited turnovers. We rebounded the ball very well
against a much bigger lineup, which limited their second chance opportunities.
East Jordan led 10-8 after
the first quarter and trailed
20-19 at halftime before
TCSF outscored the Red Devils 20-6 in the third quarter
to put some distance be-

tween the two teams.

We had a stretch in the
middle of the third quarter
when we had four or five
trips down the floor and didnt score and St. Francis
scored on a couple of
turnovers and a couple inside feeds and we couldnt
recover, Hines added. I
was very pleased with our
entire effort tonight and especially our execution in the
first half. This game should
give us some confidence
heading into the meat of our
conference schedule. Even
though we lost in the scoring
column, we learned tonight
we are capable of playing
well against good teams.
For EJ, Jill Atwood led the
team with nine points, while
Lindsay Schroeder added
seven points, eight boards
and three steals. Kaitlin
Hines had six points and
seven rebounds.
Also for the Red Devils, 2-6
overall, 1-3 conference; Miranda Burks had five rebounds and four assists and

Kassey Wojan had five rebounds.

Cheboygan 51, east Jordan 22

CHEBOYGAN East Jordan got 12 points and seven
rebounds from Lindsay
Schroeder but it wasnt
enough as the Red Devils fell
to the Lady Chiefs 51-22 on
January 13 in a non-conference contest.
The Cheifs led at the quarter breaks 9-5, 25-9 and 35-15.
Kassey Wojan added five
for East Jordan as the Red
Devils dropped to 2-5 overall
on the season. Kaitlin Hines
also had six rebounds.
We are a much better
team than we showed
tonight, Red Devils coach
Steve Hines said. We didnt
play with much intensity
and seemed to be a step behind all night. We didnt
shoot very well from the
floor or the line and we
didnt rebound as well have

and 14 boards, while
Winter Romeyn added 12
points as the Lancers
slipped to 3-2 overall, 2-2
conference.
We were pretty flat to
start the game,
Ellsworth coach Kirk
Ikens said. We did play
well in the fourth quarter though.
Tyler McNeil and
Michael McNeil led
Wolverine with 24 and 15
points, respectfully.
