INTRODUCTION & AN OVERVIEW OF THE INSTITUTION

The city of Abdul Hakim is a settler colony of the Punjab Province. In 1870, the British
Government developed the railway station in this area and named it after the name of Abdul
Hakim the Holy saint. Before the establishment of Pakistan, Basti Mian Sahib and the
Railway station were apart, which were mingled due to increase in population. By the time,
the proliferating inhabitation continued until the emergence of the now city of Abdul Hakim.
Its famous Bazar is the Rail Bazar around which the whole city is now situated. A new colony
was established in 1962 with the construction of Head Sidhnai by the Raj. After the Raj, the
vacated Head Sidhnai building by the construction company was taken over by the Pakistan
Army Base. The Area around the Head Sidhnai is now called CANTT and the city has
acquired the status of the Town COMMITTEE. Still It is considered as the sub-Tehsil of Tehsil
Kabirwala district Khnaewal. Although, there had been higher secondary school, a federal
public school along with many private schools but local students had to move to the big cities
like Khanewal and Multan for higher studies. The situation stirred the local socialists of Abdul
Hakim who initiated certain steps to evolve a Degree College for Women in their city so that
the girls could have their higher education locally. But all the efforts by the local
representatives of Abdul Hakim remained moribund till 2009; as GDCW AbdulHakim came
into being on the same day of Pakistans independence day.i-e 14th august. The historical
emergence of GDCW AbdulHakim proves to the locals the sacred existence of an institute;
which had its roots in the saints city of AbdulHakim.
But, indeed, it was the outcome of the constant efforts and strives by the local
representatives which resulted in the emergence of a notification NO-SOL Personel (148/2009) by the Higher education department under the government of the Punjab, which
clearly accepted the local body manifesto of a Degree college for women in Abdul Hakim.

The local representatives of Abdul Hakim took the burden to accommodate

the college building till the completion of the college own building construction. In 2008-2009,

the Punjab government sanctioned 5 million Revenue grant to facilitate Government Degree
College for women Abdul Hakim with college furniture, Library Books, Science and computer
Labs and other machinery/equipments needful for a modern education institute. The college
first principal was Mr. Allah Ditta Hiraj was also nominated as the project head of the college.
Ion September 2009, the college recorded its first admission session through which a limited
number of students took admission. Because there had been the rambling problem for the
female students to enter into the government Degree college for Boys as the government
Degree college for women Abdul Hakim was functioning with in the premises of the Boys
college due to the non-availability/still under constructed building for the girls college Abdul
Hakim. The reservations of the parents was resolved in September 2012 session when the
present principal of the college for women Abdul Hakim Mrs. Shaista Andleeb grappled with
the drastic situation and shifted the college into its own new building after construction
completion. The G.D.C Abdul Hakim is now functioning with 400 students enrolled where the
students are achieving enriched fruits of knowledge.
