Aguilera, Carmen Electra
and Charlies three Angels have in
common? Theyve all performed with
the Pussycat Dolls.
The Pussywat? Thats right, the
Pussycat Dolls.
And even if youve not heard about
this all-girl singing and dancing
group from America, you should have
heard their debut single.
In fact, youve probably had the
words Dont cha wish your
boyfriend was hot like me swirling
in your head over and over.
Yes, those are the infamous lines
from the Pussycat Dolls first single
Dont Cha which has become this
millenniums anthem for all narcissistic types out there.
And with bodies like theirs, you
can bet that after this, no one will
probably remember Right Said Freds
self-loving hit Im Too Sexy.
The thing is, while the Pussycat
Dolls, the singing group has been
around for a couple of years, Pussycat
Dolls the brand has existed for just
about a decade.
It all happened organically, said
Melody Thornton, the last member to
join the group. The Pussycat Dolls
were in Bangkok earlier this month
for a series of promo activities for its
debut PCD.
We all joined at separate times,
she added.

It's highly difficult to ignore the Pussycat Dolls these days,

a group that has broken into the charts and now look set to take over
the globe. NIKI CHEONG met these attractive ladies in Bangkok.

They started out mostly as a dance
act, and on Applegates recommendation, were invited to play at Johnny
Depps Viper Room at the Sunset
Strip in Los Angeles.
The years went by, Dolls came and
went and two years ago, recording
label Interscope came knocking on
their door.

group and other groups is that
weve got history, said lead
singer Nicole Scherzinger.
Scherzinger previously had a Top
10 album and single with another girl
group, Edens Crush.
Its just that two years ago,
Interscope discovered the Pussycat
Dolls and so the recording group was
formed.
It is important to note the use of
the term recording group here.

While the six girls Scherzinger,

Thorton, Carmit Bachar, Ashley
Roberts, Jessica Sutta and Kimberly
Wyatt are the Pussycat Dolls, there
are many more Dolls performing at
Caesars Palace in Las Vegas as a permanent act.
However, the girls arent worried
about their place in the group, even
with so many Dolls floating about.
This is the recording group, and
were all here to stay, said Bachar,
who was one of the original Pussycat
Dolls.
However, we have gone back (to
Caesars Palace) to perform with the
others twice so far.
A permanent show in Vegas, a
number one hit around the world and
even a cosmetic line from Stila, it
would seem that the Pussycat Dolls
are destined for great things even if
it is as a brand.

Girls did. And founder Antin has been
quoted before as saying, Its about
female empowerment, about being
confident with who you are. Hmm
just like the Spice Girls said.
What about comparisons with the
Spice Girls then?
Oh wow, we definitely take it as a
compliment, Sutta exclaimed. I
mean, were different but the Spice
Girls were huge.
You could say that the Spice Girls
blazed the trail for us, Wyatt added.
Well, if that is true, and the trail
has been blazed, then it seems that
the Pussycat Dolls have a smooth
path ahead of them.
Their second single, a ballad called
Stick Wit You, is already slowly moving up the charts and theres no
telling what else the Dolls have under
their feather boas and fur tops. Youll
just have to wait to find out.
Pussycat Dolls debut PCD is out
through Universal Malaysia.
