NOT only did more than 30 R.AGE readers get the chance to meet with some of
the cast members of the West End musical Stomp, but they also had an opportunity to stomp with them. This once-ina-lifetime Stomp Workshop was organised exclusively for R.AGE readers at the
Istana Budaya.
While I personally had reservations
joining the crowd of college and university students due to my musical abilities,
or rather lack thereof, the students
werent shy about showing off their talent. Most of them thought it was just
going to be a simple workshop, and
therefore didnt expect it to be very difficult. But by the end of the session, one
of them was overhead saying how tired
he was.
For one hour, three of the Stomp cast
members namely James Hughes, Simone

TODAY !

Clarke and Matthew Scanlon, showed us

some of their moves and sounds from
the actual show, and got us to try and
follow them. It was amazing to see how
just almost anything could be used and
made into music by just knocking,
bouncing and tapping them to rhythm.
During the session, we experimented
with brooms, basketballs, water containers and our bare hands and our feet.
Participant Nik Muyassarah, from
Sunway University College, wasnt
expecting much when she arrived but
she was really enjoying herself thoughout the workshop.
I found it weird that we enjoyed ourselves, she said adding that she didnt
expect theyd do so much at first. No
more regular sweeping for me! she
added to which her friend Rashmi
Assiriyage said: Janitors, watch out!
They were of course referring to the
session where we tried to make music

out of brooms.
The participants left the workshop
looking rather pleased having also
taken the opportunity to snap some
photos with the cast members. One
thing is for sure, they certainly grooved
to the music. Lecturers be warned,
theres going to be lots of knocking and
tapping in your classes for some time.
But dont worry too much about it, if you
cant beat them, join them by tapping
back. After all, thats the magic of
Stomp.
The student rush promotion for students is still on. So, if youd like to watch
the show and havent yet gotten your
tickets, all you need to do is show up at
Istana Budaya an hour before show
begins and all remaining tickets are available at RM77. Make sure you bring your
student ID. Limited to two tickets per student.
