The month of May brought with it
warmer weather and a ton of fantastic
activities! The All Services Enlisted Ball
is highlighted below, while inside you’ll

Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
The ASYMCA 's Annual Volunteer Luncheon was held on
Wednesday, May 2, at Admiral Baker Clubhouse. This year's theme
was "The Magic of Volunteering!" complete with magicians,
goodies, and guest speaker Brigadier General Angela Salinas,
USMC, of MCRD Western Recruiting Region, to personally thank
ASY volunteers. With new programs and growing volunteer
participation, we had 152 volunteers, staff, and supporters attend.
Robert Samuel, Patient Recreation Volunteer, was interviewed by
KGTV Channel 10 News for his outstanding volunteer efforts.

The staff tried to get Paul, our Executive Director, to make the rest
of the work day disappear, but alas, Paul is no Houdini. However,
the day was still magical! Another huge thanks to all of our
wonderful volunteers - we couldn’t do it without you!

Deep Sea Fishing On 15 May, about 30 Marines and Sailors were treated to a 1/2
day deep sea fishing trip. The event was sponsored by George
Mannschreck and Golden Triangle Rotary. Most of the attendees
were NMPS reservists.

outing!

From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:

May was another very busy month with many fun events for military families. The
highlight of the month was the Annual All Services Enlisted Ball. Our guest speaker,
SGTMJR Joe Gainey, USA, the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, was most dynamic and left an excellent challenge for everyone as we make
decisions in our lives. His challenge was to never allow anyone to tell you that you
cannot reach a goal or a dream. The test is whether you can say “NO” to the following
five questions each time you want to proceed:
1. Will it hurt anyone else?
2. Will it hurt me?
3. Is it Illegal?
4. It is immoral?
5. Will it bring shame to my family name or the Service I serve with?
If you answer all five questions with a “NO,” go for your dreams. If any are answered
“YES” take a step back and reevaluate why you need to do what you want to do, get
trained, get the right equipment, make the “YES” a “NO”, and go for your dreams. Life
is just too short...you are only given one shot, so use it well. Think about it.

We thank everyone for assisting us in our mission to make a positive difference in the
lives of military families.
