BOOK OF THE WEEK

LITERACY

SCHOOL BLUES

ACCELERATED READERS OF THE WEEK

by Daniel Pennac
When you find a non-fiction book that is
heartily endorsed by two childrens
laureates (in this case Michael Morpurgo
and Quentin Blake) then you know you must
be on to something important Daniel
Pennac is a successful writer of books both for adults and
children, who also lectures at learned institutions so why
was he labelled a dunce at school? This book has so much
ofimportance to say (both good and bad) about the
education system, about reading and about learning that I
can only really sign off by quoting Michael Morpurgos note
on the cover Every education minister, every teacher,
every parent should read this book.

(13th-17th January)
CONGRATULATIONS

TIP OF THE WEEK

Anxious
Unless youre frightened of them, you shouldnt say youre
anxious to see your friends. Youre actually eager, or
"excited." To be anxious implies a looming fear, dread or
anxiety. It doesnt mean youre looking forward to something.

WEBSITE OF THE WEEK

FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION

What should I read next?

Meaning: to estimate something or someone as useless

Daniel Pennacs breakthrough as a student came when an

inspirational (and inspired) teacher helped him to channel
his abilities by suggesting that he try to write a novel
Daniels books have a lot to say about the importance of
reading in an earlier book which is available here as The
rights of the reader Daniel offers a few rules of
behaviour to do with books. He states that a book is not
an exam, it is a gift and that you dont necessarily have to
finish a book, you are allowed to skip and to identify with
the main character. For those just getting into reading, or
for those who (like me) have been reading for many years
there often comes a point where we dont know what
book to read next. The website What should I read next?
tries to help you type in details of a book that you have
enjoyed and it will answer with details of others that you
might like to try. Just like getting recommendations from
friends this site is not perfect but it can lead you
towards treasures nonetheless.

When most people hear the word floccinaucinihilipilification,

they consider it to be a useless word. This is an example of
floccinaucinihilipilification!

HATCH END STUDENTS CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE THEIR LOCAL AREA

A group of Year 11 students have been campaigning to improve some of the local facilities in the area as part of
their Citizenship coursework. Here is what they had to say:

We believe that Harrow Leisure Centre needs improvements,

such as the changing rooms, toilets and the gym. All this and
much more needs refurbishment, and can be achieved by
supporting our cause to Improve Harrow Leisure Centre. We
also believe that the fees and prices are too expensive for
students, yet as the youth we are expected to be healthy and
fit. If you would like to support our cause please, fill our
questionnaire, wear our sticker and sign our petition!
Omar, Mark, Lijth, Wesam and Bahram

We are students campaigning to improve Hatch

End Library for young people. Our purpose is that
we would like to see more students being active
and using the library facilities. This is important
to young people as the library should provide a
calm atmosphere to study in. Also, the
computers provide the ability to research
information effectively as some students dont
have access to computers at home. We think
the library should be improved as it gives an
opportunity for successful learning and
improves the education of students in Hatch
End.
Emma, Anisa and Priyanga

We are campaigning for Boxtree Park to

be improved. We would like to see more
equipment in the park and more of the
facilities being used by young people.
Also, we would like it to be a cleaner and
safer environment for young people to
relax in.
Manisha, Zhen, Linda and Farah

HATCH ENDTHIS AFFECTS YOU!

e are campaigning to stop littering and vandalism not only in our community but
also in our school. Why start now you may ask? It may be too late if we ignore
this problem. Dont you want to live in a nice environment? Would you litter
and vandalise your own home? Why not help us set an example to everyone not
only at Hatch End Academy but in our Community?
Harrow Agenda 21 is a charity fighting and campaigning to stop littering and vandalism. We
have chosen this charity as it also promotes sustainability, recycling, protection of the environment and transport.
It is our future we are campaigning for. A future of clean streets we are proud to live and walk in
and call our own.

WHAT SHOULD I DO, IF ..?

.. my child is off school?
Contact the school on the first day of absence either by phone email - or reply to text message sent from the school.
If you are not able to use any of these methods, please write a note in your childs link book when they return to school.
If you do not advise the school the reason for absence you will be sent a letter. Please complete and return the reply slip.
An unexplained absence is recorded with an N code whilst it is being investigated by the Attendance Officer. If the parent /carer do not
provide any reason for absence within an acceptable time frame this absence will be changed to an unauthorised absence and coded with
O.
What will happen if you do not advise school the reason for absence?
If your child has an unauthorised absence (O), such as taking holiday during term time, re-occurring lateness, or persistent absence for any
other reason other than certified illness, the school will refer the matter to the London Borough of Harrow for consideration of Penalty
Notice and/or Prosecution in the Magistrates Court which may lead to a criminal record with a maximum fine of 2,500 and/or 3 months
