EO activity: asking the way and giving directions


A. How to give directions? Common verbs / phrases
- The easiest/ quickest way is
to go + direction: right, left, down (the slope), up (the hill), through,
straight on, along (the river), past (some trees), over (the bridge), under
(the bridge))
to take + road name/ the second right/ the first exit / the third left
(only when driving) to turn right / left
to stay on + road name + distance or time (stay on the main road for 2
miles/ 20 minutes)
to cross the road
(bus, trains) to change at / to get off at...
Its right around the corner / Its right here.
Its a 5 minutes walk from here. / Its a thirty-minute drive.

B. Transition words how to break the route

e.g. Turn left; after that you take road number 1; then you turn right. Next you will

Exercices
1. Aide Tom trouver son chemin. Dis-lui :
1) daller tour droit jusquau carrefour

2) de prendre la 2 gauche

3) de continuer sur 750 m environ

4) de prendre la 1 gauche aprs le feu.

5) Cest h pied.

2. Jeu de rle.
Rle A : Tu fais ton shopping Bruxelles, ville que tu connais bien. Au dbut de
la rue Neuve, tu rencontres un jeune Anglais qui sest perdu et souhaite visiter
plusieurs endroits Bruxelles. Tu rponds ses questions et tu le renseignes le
plus clairement possible en te basant sur son plan de ville.
Rle B : Tu es un jeune Anglais visitant Bruxelles. Tu souhaites te rendre aux
lieux suivants :
La Grand Place,
la Place Sainte Catherine,
le Parc de Bruxelles,
la rue Haute
la rue Antoine Dansaert.
Au dbut de la rue Neuve, tu demandes un jeune Belge de te guider sur base
de ton plan
Changez ensuite les rles -> Rle B choisit dautres lieux visiter.
