Research

To develop innovative particulate (Colloidal/Nano/Bio materials) based systems for next generation
processesanddevicesthatsustainandimprovetheeconomicwellbeingofthenationandcontribute
to the quality of the environment and public health. We conduct a blend of fundamental and applied
research across a broad range of industry sectors and research areas including dispersibility of
colloidal systems, interparticle forces and adhesion, wetting and particle adsorption, surface
modification and coating, nanotechnology, ceramics, composite materials, bio and polymer
interfaces. The underlying scientific theme that connects all of the activities is the chemistry and
physicsofinterfaces.
DispersionofNanoParticulateMatter:Dispersibility of CNTs/Graphene and other nano particulate
matters, and fundamental aspects of dispersion in aqueous/nonaqueous medium. Rheology of CNTs
suspension.
Transparent Conducting Composite Thin Films: Fabrication of transparent conducting CN
reinforced composite thin films by insitu polymerization technique. The solution based insitu
polymerization technique promises a simple, efficient and scalable manufacturing process for a
variety of substrate and devices vs. current ITO based complex deposition techniques. Thin,
transparentconductingfilmsplayahugeroleinmodernelectronics,mainlyforelectrodeapplications
in devices such as flat panel display, plasma display, liquid crystal display, touch screen, solar
reflectingglass,solarcells,andsensordevices,organiclightemittingdiodesetc.
Superhydrophobic Engineering Materials: Fabrication of highly transparent and flexible super
hydrophobic thin films with good thermal and mechanical stability by mimicking the surface of lotus
leaves by controlling the roughness and topography of hydrophobic surfaces by facile inexpensive
solgel technique. It has wide range of applications starting from selfcleaning materials to marine
engineeringmaterialswheresaltresistanceisrequired.
Functional/Structural Nanostructured Composite Coatings: Functional/structural nanostructured
ceramics/composite coatings on engineering materials by different processing routes including
electrophoretic deposition, spin coating, dip coating, solgel coatings for application in oxidation and
corrosion resistance. Corrosion control of metals is of technical, economical, environmental, and
aesthetical importance. Smart coatings are one of the areas, apart from above mention coating
fields, which is defined as any coating that changes materials properties in response to an
environmental stimulus. Coating have been engineered that link changes in light, temperature,
humidity,pressure,electricalcurrentpH,toavarietyofoutputs.
New Generation Energy Storage Materials:The challenges before the materials scientists are to

powerdensity,andextraordinarylonglifecycle.Supercapacitorsaresupposedtobemostpromising
as energy storage for next generation process. Some work is being carried out based on graphene
based electrochemical energy storage with the aim of developing super capacitors of high power
densityandlongcyclelife.
Smart and Intelligent Materials:Materials that sense the physical, chemical and biological
environment by significantly changing their properties discontinuously or in a controlled fashion are

increasing interest for a variety of uses, from the electronics industry, to medicine to space
structures. The subject covers vast arrays of adaptive, active and multifunctional materials systems
ranging from inorganic solids such as ceramics, metals, functionalised nanotubes and organic
polymers and gels to responsive organometallic compounds, metalorganic frameworks, co
ordinationpolymers,andmolecularlevelsmartmaterials.
