Problem Statement

Methodology

The water usage at students hostels

(Resident E) are usually wasted
especially when the people open the tap
until the maximum water flow while
taking their wudhu at prayer room
(surau) during praying time. The used
water can be recycled and treated to be
used for the same application and others
too.

Objectives
1. To ensure the treated water free
from harmful substance

Water Treatment Methods

Turbidity Test
To measure of waters cloudiness.
Units: Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTUs).

B.O.D Test
To measures the ability of
naturally occurring
microorganisms to digest
organic matter, usually in a
5 days incubation at 20C,
by analysing the depletion
of oxygen. This measures
biodegradable organic
matter. This is normally
expresses as O2 mg/L.

Activated carbon is suitable to treat the used

water in prayer room in Kg E. This is because the
installation for this filter is easier compare to other
method and it is widely used nowadays. Besides
that, the price for this filter is cheaper

To kill the microorganism in

the water.

From the results obtained, there are increases in

turbidity, colormetry, Total Suspended Solid, TSS
and Carbon Oxygen Demand and COD readings
which means the used water poses high turbidity,
contain high TSS and high COD with unclear
colour compared to tap water (before samples).
The decreasing of Biological Oxygen Demand,
BOD reading shows that the used water
consumed quite a lot of oxygen through microbial
oxidation.
As a step of precaution, during COD test, it must
be ensured not to dispose the solution after the
test is done. The chemical waste is explosive.

Conclusions

9.4

Chlorine Test
Volume of Chlorine, mg/L

To measures the oxygen

equivalent consumed by
organic matter in a sample
during strong chemical
oxidation.

C.O.D Test

To measure the suspended

solids by passing sample
water through a filter. The
solids caught by the filter,
once dried, are the
suspended solids.

Total Dissolved Oxygen, ml

Biological Oxygen Demand

Determining the
concentration of a
particular compound in a
preparation by comparing
the intensity of colour in a
standard preparation
known as a concentration.

Activated carbon is charcoal that has been

treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny
pores between the carbon atoms.
Has surface area of 300-2000 square
meters/gram.
Used to adsorb substances from liquids which
means attaching by chemical reaction.
Good at trapping other carbon-based impurities,
as well as things like chlorine.
Chemicals like sodium and nitrate are not
attracted to carbon which means it remove
certain impurities while ignoring others.
