Netbackup Basic
Netbackup is basically 3-Tier archiecture.
1. Netbackup Master Server
This is the brain of Netbackup domain. There can be only 1 master in a NBU domain.
The master server manages data protection operations. Any computer that has NetBackup server software installed can be designated as the
master server.
The NetBackup master server is responsible for the following functions:
Containing the backup configurations and policies
Running the scheduler that initiates automated backups
Maintaining catalogs that track the location and contents of all backups
Communicating with media servers to initiate backup and restore processes
Providing both a command line interface and a graphical user interface to administer NetBackup
2. Netbackup Media Server
Its role is just to read and write images to storage unit connected to it.
You can use multiple media server to complete your backup faster.
A media server can be any standalone server running NetBackup server software that receives requests for backup and restore operations from
the master server.
Media servers perform the following functions:
Communicate with the master server and EMM server (beginning with NetBackup 6) to initiate backup and restore operations on its
attached storage devices
Communicate with NetBackup clients during a backup or restore operation
Monitor the status of storage devices
Provide robotic control
NOTE: There can be only one robotic control host per library.
3. Netbackup Client
NetBackup clients are servers that have NetBackup client software installed.
With the proper conditions set, a client can perform the following functions:
Perform backups over the LAN through a media server
Validate connection requests from the NetBackup server
Support compression of the backup stream.
Note: EMM [Enterpise Media Manager] is also a tier . But most of the NBU environment will be with Master & EMM on the same
server.
NetBackup Enterprise Server 6.0 introduced the Enterprise Media Manager (EMM) server, which centrally manages Media Manager data that had
previously been distributed across multiple media servers. There can be only one EMM server per storage domain. The master server can also be
designated as the EMM server.
The NetBackup EMM server is responsible for the following functions:
Managing a consolidated media and device database for the NetBackup storage domain
Maintaining run-time status information, NDMP credentials, and a managed server list.

Netbackup Command Location

The vast majorty of NetBackup binaries are located in the following directories, therfore by simple looking, you should find the command. You
could also search, using the search feature in windows, or the find command in Unix.
Unix/ Linux
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/support
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd
/usr/openv/volmgr/bin
There are also some 'scripts' available in /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies
Windows
<install path>\veritas\netbackup\bin
<install path>\veritas\netbackup\bin\support
<install path>\veritas\netbackup\bin\admincmd
<install path>\veritas\volmgr\bin
There are also some 'scripts' available in <install path>\veritas\netbackup\bin\goodies
It is even easier, if you add these paths to the PATH variable of the operating system. This allows you to run commands without having to type
in the comlete path each time, or, cd to the directory.
Unix:
Add the directories to the PATH variable in the .profile file in the home directory of the user you log in as.
For example ;
PATH=$PATH:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin:/usr/openv
/netbackup/bin/goodies:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/support:/usr/openv/volmgr/bin:/u
sr/openv/java:/netbackup:/opt/sfw/bin:/netbackup/scripts:/opt/VRTSaz/bin/vxazd:/
opt/VRTSat/bin/:/opt/VRTSaz/bin/:/opt/vormetric/mseo/server/bin:/opt/vormetric/m
seo/agent/bin:/usr/openv/db/bin
Windows:
Add the directories the the PATH user variable (Right click computer, Properties, Advanced System Settings, Environment Variables (Path is
under System variable) ,
For example.
C:\Perl\site\bin;C:\Perl\bin;C:\Oracle\Ora92\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.3.1\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.8
\bin;C:\Program Files\RSA SecurIDTokenCommon;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32

Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Program Files\Enterprise Vault\EVClient\;C:\Program Files\Symantec\Workspace
Virtualization\;C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin;C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd
