Inside look at Tech women in graduate school

KENNETH MARINO
NEWS EDITOR

According to Institute Research and Planning numbers,

women constituted 24 percent of
the incoming class of graduate
students at Tech. Much of this
was driven by the gender disparity in the College of Engineering,
which is home to almost half of
all graduate students, and a gender ratio of about one woman for
every four men.
According to Dr. Christine
Valle, Director of Women in Engineering Program and Profes-

sor of Mechanical Engineering,

these numbers are on par with
most other engineering programs.
Tech, in fact, excels in attracting and retaining undergraduate
women.
Nationally, if you look at
engineering programs, about 18
percent of undergraduate students
are female, Valle said. At Tech,
were at 30 percent. So were the
largest producer of undergraduate
female engineers.
Numbers from the American
Society for Engineering Education show that in 2012, only 22
percent of engineering PhD stu-

dents are female.

One of the underlying issues,
according to Valle, is that because
there are already so few female undergraduate engineering students,
there are even fewer women who
go on to graduate school for engineering.
Jessica Block, a PhD student in
EE, believes that one of the reasons there are fewer women in engineering nationally is that there
are fewer female role models in
engineering.
A lot of time they get inspiration from people who are older

INEBRIATED INTRUDER
On Oct. 11, a GTPD officer
was requested at Bobby Dodd
Stadium due to individuals trespassing inside the stadium after
hours. Initially, the Event Security Supervisor approached the
individuals, but most of them
ran away when they were noticed. He eventually caught up
to one and held him until the
officer arrived. The apprehended

others and themselves and hazing.
In addition, the hazing violations entitled the fraternity to
fines, revision of its new member
education program and completion of a Risk Management
Course under Kappa Alpha Orders National Office. Most of
these consequences stem from
hazing violations
Because of the disciplinary
probation, the fraternity will
not be allowed to participate in
Homecoming, Greek Week, or
any social events of any kind on
campus. These social events include those hosted or co-contributed by Kappa Alpha and events
held at other Greek houses.
The fraternity can still participate in academic events and
non-academic events approved
by OSI and the Kappa Alpha
Orders National Administrative
Office, such as recruiting efforts,

fraternity meetings, intramurals

and service events.

Once the officer began questioning him, the student refused

to identify the other trespassers
except for one freshman student
who ran away. The apprehended
student explained that he had
seen other students enter the stadium after hours and wanted to
show his friends around.
The officer also smelled alcohol on the students breathe and
asks what he had to drink that
night. The student stated that he
had vodka and a mixed drink.
After the student was lectured
on his crime, he was charged
with underage possession of alcohol, criminal trespass and violation of student conduct.

The officer called a Grady

the man was transported to
the Grady Hospital Emergency

PETERS PARKING CONCERNS

Due to safety concerns regarding Peters Parking Deck,
SGAs VP of Campus Affairs
and Parking and Transportation
Chair met with the Director
of Parking and Transportation
Services, and from the meeting, they confirmed that the
department has recognized the
concern and misunderstanding
regarding policy of on-campus
parking.
Under Parking and Transportations current decision, the
gate at Peters Parking Deck will
remain up after 5 p.m. for the
remainder of the semester, but
in the meantime, SGA plans to
work on better modes of communication between Parking &
Transportation and the student
body and improvements to the
policy on parking after 5 p.m.

GRAND THEFT AUTO

On Oct. 4, the GTPD was
patrolling and observed a gray
Nissan Pathfinder driving down
the wrong side of the street. The
officer stopped the suspect and
interrogated him for his information. The officer learned the
suspect was driving a stolen vehicle with other stolen property,
including tablets, phones and
laptops inside the vehicle. The
suspect was charged with theft
via a stolen vehicle and obstructing a criminal investigation.

Amber Joy Vinson, the second

U.S. healthcare worker to contract
the Ebola Virus in the U.S., was
permitted on a flight despite a fever, according to the Washington
Post.
According to the Post, Vinson
was running a temperature of 99.5
degrees, below the 100.4 degree
threshold the CDC recommends
for screening travelers from Ebolaaffected countries.
However, on Wednesday,
CDC Director Thomas Frieden
said that Vinson should not have
been on the flight due to her exposure to an Ebola patient.
The CDC contacted the 132
passengers aboard Flight 1443
who may have been exposed to the
virus. Ebola is spread through the
direct contact with bodily fluids,
with patients carrying a higher viral load as the disease progresses.
The original patient, Thomas
Eric Duncan, who died on Oct.
8, was admitted to Texas Health
Presbyterian Hospital Dallas two
dats after his original examination
at the same hospital.
Since then, two health care
workers in the hospital have been
infected with Ebola.
The escalating crises has led to
political problems for the CDC.
House Speaker John Boehner
(R-Ohio) called for a travel ban
for affected countries. President
Obama also called a cabinet meeting to discuss the crises, pledgeing a much more aggressive response.
CDC officials maintain that
the chance of a full-blown outbreak in the U.S. is very small.

Another reason that BitPay is

so attractive to Tech is that, unlike
normal credit card institutions,
it doesnt assess any monthly or
transaction fees. Chargebacks are
also nonexistent. The company
facilitates the exchange rate between Bitcoin and USD and assumes risks associated with this
as well.
There is some interest regarding how digital currencies will
interact with existing methods of
digital payment, such as Apples
Apple Pay. According to Pete,
roughly 40 percent of Techs student population own an Apple
iPhone, so an interaction between
the two would be significant.
In terms of future utility, the
Tech/BitPay partnership is actually quite promising, according to
Pete..
The opportunity exists to leverage the BitPay/Bitcoin acceptance program for the payment for
student tuition, fees, room, board,
and other expenses, Pete said.
Pete also spoke about the situation that many international students find themselves in, which is
having a majority of their personal
capital in cash form.
It would be much more secure
for them to leverage Bitcoin to enable the portability of funds, Pete
said.
Roughly 20% of Techs students who come from a non-U.S.
country.
Students wishing to get involved in all things relating to
Bitcoin can now join Techs Bitcoin club, which had its first
meeting on September 29. A relatively large number of 60 students
showed up for a Bitcoin 101 session, demonstrating that interest
for the digital currency is thriving
on campus.

At the home football game
against the University of Miami
on October 5, Tech concessions at
Bobby Dodd began accepting the
virtual currency Bitcoin as payment.
According to James Pete, Senior Director of the Information
Technology Group wing of Campus Services, the partnership of
Tech with BitPay, the facilitating
company, came about due to the
fact that the companys founders,
Tony Gallippi and Stephen Pair,
are both Tech alumni.
According to Pete, their partnership with the Georgia Tech
Athletic Association (GTAA) was
specifically designed to broaden
and increase awareness of Bitcoins
amongst their target demographic
of tech-savvy college students.
Pete also described how a Bitcoin pilot was integrated into
the Campus Card Program or
Buzzcard. This functionality was
soft-launched the week of September 29th, and now has been
implemented.
According to Pete, students
desire for privacy has driven
Techs decision to allow Bitcoin
transaction.
At a basic level, PayPal adoption was driven by the fact that
customers did not have to share
their credit card information with
merchants, Pete said. Bitcoin
transactions inherently have a
higher-level of anonymity.
Since the use of a credit or
debit card has previously been required to fund Buzzcard use, this
new integration of Bitcoin will allow for greater confidentiality for
students wishing to utilize campus services.

While working on the project, Deyle and his team implemented radar techniques from the
1950s for localizing and pin point
searching.
We looked up stuff in 1950s
radar literature which holds up
even today and if we had better
hardware we wouldve been able
to implement more stuff from that
literature for even better localization, Deyle sajd. A lot of people

which builds this foundation
One of the possible application
for advances like these is medication delivery and for robotics in

At the 2014, International

Conference on Intelligence Robot
and Systems, Tech PhD graduate Dr. Travis Deyle, Professor
Charlie Kemp and University of
Washington Professor Matthew
Reynolds presented a new Radio
Frequency Identification (RFID)
based search algorithm for locating objects in a 3D environment
with the help of robots.
The research was implemented
on a PR2 robot and it can locate
objects correctly with the help of
RFID tags.
In robotics, one of the hardest
challenges is to know the identity
of objects, said Feyle. It is easy
for a person to walk into a room
and locate stuff, but in robotics it

is one of the toughest questions

out there.
An RFID tag on an object can
give the robot the information it
needs to identify and locate the
object in a room.
Long range RFID, implemented by Deyle and his team, can be
used to great effect in a room.
It works when objects are out
of sight also, Feyle said. If an
object is inside a cabinet or a behind the sofa, the robot can locate
it using long range RFID. Also,
there can be multiple objects in
the room from 100 to a 1000 and
the robot will be able to locate the
precise object.
Using RFID and tags we can
only locate a rough area of where
the object is located in the environment, Deyle saud. For precise object location we will have to

than them, Block said. And so

chance that my mom or any woman in my family is an engineer.
Youre already less likely to view
engineering as an option or even

According to Block, her own
role model was her brother.
Other difficulties women in
graduate school may face is isolation--being one of the few women
in their classes or lab.
Even though everyone might
be very welcoming, nobody says
anything outwardly offensive or
insensitive or anything like that,
its hard not to take it as a message that you dont really belong,
Valle said. On some women, I

after a while.
Another issue women in graduate school who want to start families might face is the prospect of
starting a career at the same time
others start having children.
I always knew that I wanted
to go into research, so I went into
research my freshman year, and
what really held me back from deciding to go to grad school was I
eventually want to have a family,
Block said.
Guys will probably say the
same thing, but from a womans
standpoint, you have to take time
off to have a kid. Men kind of
have that option. How grad
school fits into that is really complicated.
Despite some of the unique
challenges some women face,
Block says that in the scheme of

things, she has had a good time in

graduate school.
I was talking about my difficult experiences as a women in engineering, but honestly, they dont
affect me that much, Block said.
I love being an engineer and I
love grad school and Im the only
girl in one of my grad classes right
now, but I forget about that...
Theres more important things in
grad school than what gender you
are.
Other things mentioned by
Valle as possible reasons fewer
women end up in engineering
graduate school were that women
often have broad interests and go
to law school or medical school
rather than continue in engineering and students often have a lot
of debt after their Bachelors degree.

Panda Express construction

begins in Student Center
HOLDEN LEE

ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

Over Fall Break, the former
Burger Bytes restaurant site has
been covered and construction
has for the new Panda Express
has begun. The opening day has
not been scheduled yet, but the
Stamps Student Center Commons
expects the restaurant to open
no later than January. An earlier
opening will arrive depending on
the progression of construction.
Panda Express has been supported as a common dining choice
among college campuses and was
chosen to take the vacant space.
Panda has been a popular dining concept for college campuses.
It will complement the food offered in the Stamps Student Center Commons. The concept is
designed for fast service and will
offer variety that will attract both
lunch and dinner patrons. The
Panda program includes menu
items that are priced to match a
student budget and they will accept Dining Dollars, said Rich
Steele, Director of Auxiliary Services.
The selection process for a new
Student Center restaurant included extensive data from surveys,
guidance from Student Center
faculty and input from student
groups.
We select concepts such as
Panda Express based in part on
feedback received from satisfaction surveys, Steele said. We

have over 10 years of data from

surveys. Also, our Auxiliary Services Advisory Council provides
guidance on these decisions. The
Advisory Council is chaired by
the SGA Campus Services Committee with its current chair, Pragya Saboo, and the membership is
primarily students.
Unlike other locations, the
Panda Express at Tech will be
design to accommodate to Tech
students and offer other dining
choices for students. In addition,
the options will range for preferences of different individuals, and
most prices are expected to be below ten dollars.
New food and drink choices
that are not as available around
Atlanta will come to the campus
as well. Some of these choices include a variety of American Chinese and vegetarian options, and
bubble tea will also be available
for purchase.
I am really glad because the
old restaurant sucked, so despite
the delay anything is an improvement, said Gabe Hesketh,
second year BIOL major. There
are many Chinese restaurants
around, so it will be interesting
to see how it stocks up. Also, the
location helps.
Most dining options on campus are reviewed and reconsidered
depending on their success among
the student body, and considering
Panda Express the student body
and Student Center faculty expect
success with the restaurant.

Examining the free speech area on campus

KENNETH MARINO
NEWS EDITOR

The arrival of outside demonstrators at Tech last week, sparked

a discussion on campus about free
speech as several student groups
organized counter-protests and
alternate programming. Among
the most controversial parts of the
Southeast Preachers Associations
(SOPA) comments were those
made against gays and lesbians,
which many students called antigay and hateful.
So these people, due to their
first amendment free speech laws
are allowed to come out here and
preach hate and we figured it
would not be right if some Tech
students did not come out and
preach love as well, said Schuyler
Cottrell, a first year ME student
and counter-protestor.
One particular issue was the
attempted scheduling of a drum
circle near the small amphitheater,
often called the free speech area.
According to Lisa Ray Grovenstein, Media Relations Director, Capital Planning and Space
Management denied a request
for students to play drums during
SOPAs event.
Since playing the drums
would have been either disruptive
or would have interfered with the
lawful use of the free speech space,
the request was not approved,
Grovenstein said.
Despite this, several students
exercised their speech rights in a
counterprotest. Around a hun-

dred students sat in the bleachers

of the amphitheater, holding signs
saying things such as Jesus had
two dads and you had me at
meat tornado, and engaging with
the demonstrators.
According to Techs Free Expression policy, Georgia Tech
holds the first amendment guarantees of freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and the right
to assemble peaceably as an essential cornerstone to the advancement of knowledge and the right
of a free people.
What you need to remember
is the policy is that we are for free
speech and we dont try to control
the content of anybodys speech,
said Gary Wolovick, an attorney
for the Office of Legal Affairs.
Although outside groups must
be allowed to demonstrate on
campus, outside groups must reserve space in advance, and the
spaces they can reserve are usually limited to the Free Speech
Areas, usually the small amphitheater where SOPA was demonstrating.
The procedure really has to
do with time place and manner,
Wolovick said. It really has to do
with making sure that the space
isnt being used by somebody else
or that space is adequate.
Tech students and staff are less
limited in the time and places
they can protest, demonstrate
or otherwise exercise their free
speech rights.
For the campus community
members, they can pretty much

go anywhere as long as they dont

disrupt the institution, said Dr.
William Schafer, Vice President
of Student Affairs. They dont
have to reserve that spot to go over
there and express themselves.
According to Schafer, some
students are confused about the
institutes responsibilities regarding free speech.
I think it probably calls
for more education about free

speech, Schafer said. Im assuming [students] would think that

was not okay [for them to protest]
and so you know [that] part of the
campus is to encourage people to
talk about important issues and
sometimes people dont want to
hear those issues.
The great part about living in
the United States though is that
right to free speech and so were
not against that, but it does hurt

students and thats why we wanted to be there just in case we saw

someone hurting that would happen to walk by we could be there
to talk to them, said Emily Ard,
Campus Ministry Intern at CCF,
an organization who participated
in supporting the LGBTQIA
community.
The demonstrations lasted
three days, from Wednesday until
Friday.

Kappa Alpha put on probation

October 17, 2014

TOP SLIVERS

Another Fall Break, another time where I fooled

myself into thinking Id catch-up on my work.

Tech must address consistent issues with Greek culture

Earlier this month, the Kappa Alpha
(KA) fraternity was officially placed on
disciplinary probation for hazing one of
their pledges. This marks the fourth year in
a row in which Tech has had a Greek organization face either disciplinary probation
or suspension. The institute should reconsider its policies for suspending organizations and begin looking into what appears
to be a growing cultural issue in Greek life.
Tech insists it is an anti-hazing institute,
yet the punishments do not properly back
up this claim. In other words, the institute
should punish those who haze and should
do so appropriately and more importantly,
consistently.
Two years ago, Beta Theta Pi was suspended three years for hazing. While the
situations are different, hazing does not
have degrees; hazing is, in itself, the practice of any sort of activity imposing either
mental or physical abuse and/or stress. By
punishing a group differently for the same

offense, it could lead to the justification of

dangerous behavior.
In the case of KA, a pledge broke his leg,
but the fraternity only recieved a disciplinary suspension, which still allows them
meet and recruit. By subjugating hazing to
very different ranks it implies that lesser
hazing forms may not be punished and are
therefore not wrong.
Additionally, Techs first and foremost
goal should be to ensure the safety of the
students, not listen to the opinions of the
alumni. Some alumni may object to their
former chapters punishment or removal,
but injuries from hazing will only continue
if appropriate punishment is not given.
The frightening part about this is rising trend that is appearing. The past four
suspensions included no repeat offenders,
implying an issue in Greek culture, not
in individual organizations. It is time for
Tech to review their policies and intervene
before more, preventable injuries ensue.

Technique, but not necessarily the opinions of individual editors.

The tyranny of Techs flipped courses

By now, every student has
had, or knows someone who has
had, a flipped class.
These classes have been
around for a few years, and
Georgia Tech has taken a likening towards them, as they provide a true usage of technology
to present the learning material
to the students.
However, I have been in a
few of these classes and have had
more than a few problems with
them.
A flipped class is defined by
the student taking extra time
to watch lectures outside of the
designated class time where
they are expected to take notes
and answer brief questions
along with the videos while actual class time is used instead to
solve problems with the teacher
or teaching assistant present for
any other assistance needed.
On paper, this type of class
does not sound bad, but in practice I have found out quickly the
many pains they present.
For example, because you
have to watch these lectures outside of class you have to spend
a huge chunk of time just to be
caught up in the class.

I cannot shake the feeling

that I have not truly learned
from these types of classes
as well as I could have
learned from the normal
lecture classes.

CONNOR NAPOLITANO

DESIGN EDITOR

With constant lectures and

online quizzes, these quickly
add up to be what is easily much
longer time spent on this class
than I would be spending on just
homework and going to a normal lecture, but it is still worth
the same amount of credit.
Going to class is also completely mandatory, which would
normally not bother me much as
a responsible student who takes
full advantage of my hands on
lecture experience, however
there are times when the worksheets are the same as the online
quizzes and seems to be pure reiteration, which is annoying and
unhelpful.
On the other hand, there are
also days where the worksheets

are so much more difficult than

the online lectures ever prepared
you and the rest of the class for.
Well, because these lectures were just a video online
you could not physically prepare yourself any more for the
worksheets that day without
additional videos or reading
that would be provided by the
teacher.
Once you get into class everyone generally has similar
questions. The teacher and
teaching assistant try their best
to go around answering the
same question repeatedly, and
this is only for the first problem
on the worksheet.
Then, everyone in the class is
struggling to get through these

last 4 or so questions, asking

more questions and making the
entire class seem chaotic where
everyone is trying to ask questions to finish this worksheet
just to get credit for that day.
Of course, these issues are all
at the fault of the teachers I have
had who have made my overall
experiences in these classes extremely negative despite my
good grades in the class.
Overall, I think this is the
worst part: if I got a good grade
in the class, I should be happy
that it worked out in the end. I
am glad it cannot hurt my GPA
in the short run.
However, for the long run,
I cannot shake the feeling that
I have not truly learned from
these types of classes as well as I
know I could have learned from
the normal lecture classes.
It is truly frustrating that
these classes do not receive the
bad reputation they really deserve. Just because professors
give their classes a massive curve
at the end of the semester, so the
classes GPAs do not look horrendous, does not mean that the
classes work in the students best
interest.

HOT or NOT Applause for the smoking ban
OUR VIEWS | HOT OR NOT

Walking Dead Back

Fall break has ended and

we are all getting settled back
into the routine horror of Tech
classes, but luckily, one of our
favorite Sunday Night thrillers is back. The Walking Dead
made its Season 5 premiere
last Sunday. No spoilers, but
one interesting factoid is the
premiere set a TV cable record
for most-number of viewers for
a drama series at 17.3 million.
Now there will be two walking
deads to talk about for a while.

Class Schedules

Fall semester is halfway over

and nothing takes the pain off
of the current workload like
looking at classes and hoping
for better in the future (also
graduating). Feeling overburdened? Wish you had done a
better job of keeping track of
your different schedules and
study plan? Take a look at your
next semesters classes and get
a head start on your plan to do
better (or watch Netflix, both
are good options).

Duke Game Refs

The dream of going undefeated sadly ended last Saturday when Tech fell to Duke
31-25. What was so upsetting
for most Tech fans wasnt the
teams performance, it was the
refs. Not to say that the refs
had been paid off, but starting
with the targeting call against
Griffin, it seemed the refs
would give the benefit of the
doubt to Duke. Also that pic
of the ref with the Duke bag?
Something is fishy.

Workload

No not just the rigor of

Tech thats cold. It is the fact
that there are some professors
cramming a weeks worth of
content in a three-day week.
Whats the point about having a Fall Break to allegedly
catch up on all of your work
if you just get back and you
get crammed with more? This
week should be easier, but instead, were getting gray hairs
and an entire box of Goldfish
to stress eat.

Finally, in the year 2014, the

University System of Georgia
Board of Regents ruled to make
public universities tobacco free.
Its a statewide policy that follows
other states bans on university
campuses. Over 1,200 universities and colleges across the nation
have tobacco free policies in place.
The decision for the Board of Regents is not only long overdue,
but indicative that the Board has
a vested interest in the health of
our universities students, faculty,
and staff.
I dont need to go into the
gruesome details of how smoking kills. If you combine every
war-related death from the Revolutionary War up to the present
day, that total is only 10% of
deaths compared to the number
of deaths caused by cigarette and
tobacco use. Smoking kills more
than 480,000 people in the United States alone every year. That
is more than deaths from HIV,
illegal drug use, alcohol, motor
vehicle accidents, and firearm-related incidents combined. Smoking causes more than 90% of all
lung cancer deaths. Smoking releases carcinogens into the body
that lead to cancers in nearly every
organ: bladder, cervix, esophagus,
kidney, larynx, liver, pancreas,
stomach, trachea, lungs, and heart
disease. There is no doubt or concern that smoking, cigarettes and
tobacco use lead to considerably
higher health risks not only to
the smokers body, but to those
around.
As a non-smoker, I can only
begin to understand the desire to
smoke, the sad addiction to nicotine, or the pleasure of smoke bil-

lowing from your mouth like an

Industrial Revolution chimney. I
cannot put myself in your shoes,
having to rush out of class right
at 2:54PM to go to the stone steps
outside the glass walls of the College of Business or the Clough and
puff away the years of your youth.
I value my body too much to poison, rot, and decay my insides like
that.
I can, however, assert with
all my authority not as anyone
more than a fellow human being, a student, and global citizen,
that smoking is not something I
want around me. Banning smoking goes beyond the distasteful
smell. It goes further to protecting
my own health and well being,
and the general health and well
being of our entire campus. Banning smoking highlights just how
critical our students health is, and
that we as a community of educated individuals, should stand in
solidarity and support the well being of our student body. And that
is something that I will fight for,
no matter how many people may
feel off put by it.
In the previous Letter to the
Editor, it was said that by enforcing this tobacco ban, that we are
like Nazis, Soviets, and evil
autocratic forces. I ardently believe that these statements are
highly vulgar, and solely used as a
provocative shock tactic. There is
nothing about this ban that parallels to that of Nazism, Socialism,
or Communism. The writer further called for the student body to
vandalize school property, and
persuade police officers. Vandalism is simply clear disrespect
to the Institute, our initiatives,

and our values, and even further,

the University System of Georgia.
There should be no incident where
a student actively, facilitates, or
calls for vandalism of school property. The Georgia Tech Police Department is a unit of the Institute
charged to protect the community,
and enforce the rules, regulations,
and laws on a variety of tiers: from
the Institute, City of Atlanta, and
state entities. I am appalled that a
Georgia Tech student would even
consider persuading an officer of
the law to condone illicit activity.
For the writer to pen such dangerous words, is truly, an embarrassment to himself, the Technique,
and Institute.
Change and progress do not
occur under people who remain
silent. I applaud the Board of Regents for instating this new policy,
expect for the Institute, along
with our fellow universities, to follow the policy, and count on the
police departments, the Deans of
Students, and all affiliated individuals to maintain and enforce
this policy.
If youre on campus and you see
someone smoking, please, kindly
remind them of the new tobacco
free policy. Invite them to seek
cessation programs. If they continue to smoke, then they can be
refereed to the Dean of Students
for a more formal conversation.
It is my hope that less and less
students will smoke, poisoning
their bodies, and by extension,
ours as well as casual bystanders.
But, now, I will no longer be a bystander.

The success of the event

...the success [of the chalking

Although the event was organized by SGA, it was still in many

Because there was such a short

SGA began planning the event

the chalking was done over social

Even more, though, many

This, according to Berry, also

The way it grew organically

Speaker discusses ISIS and Turkey

ALEXA GRZECH
LIFE EDITOR

Holding a PhD from Florida

International University, Dr. Isa
Afacan recently spoke to Tech students and faculty about ISIS, the
Middle Eastern terror group, and
state collapse in the Middle East.
With the series witty title
Lets Talk Turkey, Dr. Isa Afacan, a professor of International
Relations at Turgut Ozal University, recounted his experience
in Gaziantep, Turkey, during the
Syrian Civil War.
Afacan begins his talk by recalling the recent Arab Spring
revolutions that he refers to as
revolutionary processes.
These processes, moreover,
start as mass protests resulting in
state collapse.
Citing state collapse as a major
theme for Middle Eastern nations,
Afacan touches upon the drastic,
rapid increase in state collapse in
recent years. He refers to the Arab
Spring revolutions specifically as
evidence of state collapses newfound speed.
He feels that during the revolutionary processes, the nation itself
has no other credible alternative
than to turn to a Hobbesian state
of nature.
With state collapse, moreover,
trans-state groups fill the vacuum
so ISIS-like organizations cause
issues for Turkey and other nations around the world.
By inquiring as to why ISISlike organizations continue to
emerge, Afacan uses the state collapse context to argue his main
points. His central argument refers to the fact that state collapse
kills citizenship.
With no functioning government to offer security, individuals seek protection from different
identity groups.
In the Middle East, these indi-

viduals seek immediate identity

[which] can be ethnic, tribal or
sectarian identity.
Along with the elimination of
the citizenship idea, Afacan feels
state collapse kills socialization
cycles [while] collapsing borders.
Citing Turkey as a prime example, Afacan believes borders no
longer provide a natural distinction between states or non-state
actors.
Deeming ISISs ideology as the
main factor to the groups success,
Afacan lists global networking

capacity and pragmatism of the

organization as the some of the
main dynamics contributing to
ISISs effectiveness. He believes by
understanding the dynamics, ISIS
can be stopped.
Reciting alarming statistics,
Afacan gives strong empirical evidence to support his claims. For
instance, ISIS receives around 1
million dollars per day mainly
from donations and ransom monies.
Afacan also mentions the propaganda techniques used by ISIS

to spread the groups message.

With many people around the
globe barring witness to the demoralizing videos generally showing hostages in distressing conditions, Afacan believes the videos
show the sheer force of violence
that the terror organization is
willing to commit.
When asked what he would
do if he was the President, Afacan replied, I am only a scholar.
He did share that there is no clear
strategy to combatting state collapse as ambiguity can arise.

Georgia Tech can be a scary

how you could possibly make your

Fear not, these tricks, or maybe
treats, will help you get through
this frightful time.
DECORATE
A great way to get into the Halloween spirt is to decorate your
room with festive decorations.
You probably wont even have to
spend much on decorations, to be
honest. Some halls will provide
students with decorations, but if
yours doesnt, use the cobwebs
that have been collecting above
your wardrobe, and look behind
your desk for some dead bugs.

Ghettobuzz shares game day experience

ALEXA GRZECH
LIFE EDITOR

As a third-year BME major,

Alex Hubbard forgoes his Tech
student identity on game days for
a different character: GT Ghettobuzz V.
Technique: How long have
you been a Tech fan?
Hubbard: In first grade, my
parents took me to a GT baseball
game. After the game, I got all the
players to autograph my hat, including Mark Teixeira.
On the way home, I told my
parents, When I grow up, Im
going to come here and be an engineer.
Technique: How long have
you been a Goldfella? What was
your first game like?
Hubbard: Ive been a Goldfella since the Virginia game my
freshman year (2012). Ive only attended one game unpainted, during which I sat next to the Goldfellas and asked how I could join.
One email later, I found myself
in the midst of some of the best
people I would meet at Georgia
Tech. Being front and center at
the games, painted yellow and
wigged up, was absolutely surreal.
I would definitely recommend
trying it to any freshman who isnt
sure of what they want to get involved in at Tech.
Technique: How do you and
the other Goldfellas prepare for a
game?
Hubbard: A few hours before
kickoff, we start slathering our

faces and upper bodies with the

yellow base layer. After that dries,
we paint 4 black stripes on each
arm as well as our individual face
designs, which are unique to each
Goldfella.
Near the end of our tailgate,

we paint on letters (usually some

witty insult to the other team)
and douse them with glitter for
emphasis. On our march to the
stadium, we sing our fight songs,
stopping often to pose for pictures. When we get to the bot-

tom of Freshman Hill, I lead the

Goldfellas in a few chants (Whats
the Good Word!?), and we take off
and sprint to the South Entrance.
Technique: Does seeing yourself on TV painted up ever get
old? Or is it always exciting?

Alex Hubbard dresses up as Ghettobuzz to cheer on the Yellow Jackets. As a lifelong Tech fan,
Hubbard was a dedicated Goldfellas member before being appointed to the Ghettobuzz position.

Hubbard: We see ourselves on

TV all the time. The cameras love
to sweep by us as theyre going to
commercial or show an aerial shot
of us between plays.
In fact, the ACC TV network
interviewed us for a segment for
the Miami game, and we got to
see an awesome video of us on the
ACC.com home page. We almost
always come away from the games
with several great photos of the
group as well as individual closeups.
Technique: Why were you
chosen as Ghettobuzz?
Hubbard: I was appointed to
be Ghettobuzz by the previous
Ghettobuzz, James Ray, upon his
graduation.
In his own words, he said I was
chosen due to my dedication to
the Goldfellas during the previous
year, in which I was Ghettobuzzs
assistant, during which I demonstrated the ability to maintain the
traditions and keep the Goldfellas
in line.
Technique: Will you be Ghettobuzz after this year?
Hubbard: I will be Ghettobuzz until I graduate next year,
at which point I will appoint my
successor, Ghettobuzz VI, who,
if historical trends hold true, will
most likely be the person I choose
to be my assistant next year.
Technique: If you could
change one thing about the football team, what would it be?
Hubbard: I would bring back
Calvin Johnson and Demaryius
Thomas.

Breakfast and dessert for your dorm

LINDSAY PURCELL
MANAGING EDITOR

Food: It is both delicious and

necessary, but often, finding the
perfect balance between nutritious, scrumptious, inexpensive
and not ultra time-consuming can
be tough. This is especially true
when living in a college dorm.
Luckily, though, the Technique
has managed to pull together a
collection of easy recipes that
would make even the most celebrated Food Network chef proud.
Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but it can
also be the most overlooked. With
almost fulfilling options like an
uncooked Pop Tart or weird egg
sandwich from a fast-food chain
always near by, taking the time to
make the breakfast of champions
may not seem worth it. Fortunately, we are here to tell you that it is.
An especially easy and inexpensive, and not to mention our
favorite, option is a homemade
granola bar. Sure, you could
buy some Quaker guys box of
six tiny granola bars with about
three chocolate chips each. Or,
you could take fifteen minutes
tops and create the granola bar
that will curb your hunger like a
Snickers bar.
The ingredients for this No
Bake M&M Granola Bar are
both basic and easy to find. Of
course, feel free to substitute your
favorite additions too.
You will need two cups of old
fashioned oats, one cup of Rice

Krispies, 1/2 cup of chopped pretzels, 1/2 cup of M&Ms and 1/4
cup portions honey, peanut butter, butter and brown sugar.
Mix together the dry ingredients, and then melt the butters,
honey and sugar in a medium
sauce pan for 2-3 minutes. Then
mix the dry ingredients in. Now
add the entire mixture into a pan
and let it set. After 30 minutes,
your granola bars will be ready to
eat and boy, will they be delicious!
Plus, if you make a bigger
batch, you can have leftovers for
weeks (or days if you eat like us).
Just think of the jealous stares
you and your granola bars will get
during that 8 a.m.
Dessert can also be especially
tricky when you are living in a

dorm room. There is no late night

delivery for ice cream and cookies,
and often, buying a whole cake for
yourself can seem both expensive
and sad.
Luckily, there are some easy
recipes out that will settle your
sweet tooth quickly and on a budget.
With the arrival of Autumn,
fall flavors are especially near
and dear to our hearts, which is
why we are in love with an easy
to bake, Microwave apple cake.
It has only four ingredients and
takes just over 15 minutes to bake.
What a time to be alive!
You will need a microwave safe
bowl or bundt pan if you are really
dedicated. Additionally, this cake
requires a box of yellow cake mix,

3 eggs, a can of apple pie filling

and 1/2 cup of applesauce.
Mix all of the ingredients
together in the bowl. Then, microwave for six minutes on high,
turn the bowl and microwave for
another six minutes. Then remove
from the microwave, place a dish
over the bowl, and let it stand for
another five minutes. Just like
that, an entire inexpensive but
scrumptious cake is at your disposal. Share with your friends, or
not.
Eating is almost always fun,
but trying to find something to
eat in a dorm room is not. By following these two recipes, even the
most inept student chef can have
meals that are as equally convenient as they are yummy.

A four ingredient bundt cake that can be easily made in a dorm room microwave is just one dining
dorm hack. Breakfast can also be made delicious and easy with a simple granola bar recipe.

CARVE A PUMPKIN
Halloween is probably one of
the few socially acceptable times
to have an inanimate object as a
friend. Buy a pumpkin at a local
store and carve yourself a jack-olantern.
No matter what you carve
a a goofy face, Mickey Mouse or
your lovers initialsitll be impressive. Just remember to invest
in some battery operated candles
because who wants a housing violation for a pumpkin?
BOO
There is no better time to play
practical jokes on people than
around Halloween. Everything
just seems scarier around this
time. Youll get big scares and big
laughs!
If you need some inspiration
for your pranks, watch a couple of
Ellen videos; theyre sure to give
you some grand ideas.
For most people though, you
could probably just show them
their GPA, and youll give them
the scare of their lives.
STOCK UP ON CANDY
Now, as college students, some
people may think were too old
to trick-or-treat. While this may
be the case, stock up on a ton of
candy, especially right before the
event when the prices take a nosedive.
Take some for yourself, but
also try handing some out to people around campus.
This will brighten peoples
days as they are cramming for all
of those frightening tests.

The Flash kicks off with original head start

TELEVISION

The Flash
NETWORK: The CW
WHEN: Tue. 8/7c
STARRING: Grant Gustin

OUR TAKE:
JAMIE RULE

STAFF WRITER
As fall begins and the weather
grows cooler, television starts a
new season as well. While this is
by no means the most significant
change heralded by the onset of
autumn, it is a contender for being the most lighthearted.
New series premiering this
season include: Scorpion, a crime
drama; Marry Me, a romantic
comedy and Stalker, a procedural.
With a plethora of new shows,
finding one that has potential is
far easier than finding one that actually lives up to its stylized commercials and previews.
One such show is The CWs
The Flash, a modern take on Barry Allen as the titular superhero.
While Marvel is happily producing movie after movie of interwoven heroes stories, DC seems
to be content with the odd Superman or Batman movie while
focusing its main filmmaking attention on television series such as
Gotham, Arrow and the upcoming
Constantine.
This gives DC more leeway
and perhaps will lead to interesting plots, which can be explored

As a spin-off of the popular and now-veteran show Arrow, The CWs The Flash has a lot to live up to in the superhero department. Straddling the line between originality and comic tradition, the show lacks credibility but may yet have room to grow.

in more depth over the course of a

season than is possible in a single
movie.
One of The Flashs most advertised draws is its close connection
to Arrow, a show about Oliver
Queen becoming the Green Ar-

row (without ever calling himself

such) that started its third season
the day after The Flash first aired
on Oct 7. Those who watch Arrow
were treated to the first glimpses
of Barry Allen, played by Grant
Gustin (Glee), as well as several

other main characters of The Flash

earlier this year when The CW
first announced plans for this
spin-off series.
Since then, the two shows have
been irrevocably intertwined, especially since Barry Allen helped

design part of Green Arrows costume. As such, it was important

for The Flash to establish itself as a
new, separate show from the very
beginning; otherwise, it would
merely strike viewers as an excuse

Taco cuisine spices up Atlanta restaurant scene

RESTAURANTS

Takorea
LOCATION: Juniper Street
CUISINE: Mexican, Korean
COST: $7-10
HOURS: 11:30-10
PHONE: (404) 532-1944

OUR TAKE:
JEAN MULLANEY

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Midtown Atlanta is home to a

thriving restaurant scene. Within
walking distance of Tech Square
on Juniper Street NW is Takorea.
The name is an appropriate play
on the words taco and Korea:
Takorea is a tantalizing fusion of
Korean and Mexican cuisines. The
idea is to deliver Korean flavors in
the vessel of Mexican food, which
many already know and love.
In addition to the tasty cuisine, the cozy, eclectic atmosphere
of the restaurant provides an ideal
place to hole up and have good
conversation among friends.
The menu has obvious choices,
such as tacos, which are affectionately called takos, and burritos.
It also sports Korean side dishes,
called banchan, including kimchi and seared mushrooms. They
also offer an essential Korean

dish called bibimbap (though its

labeled bibim-bop on the menu),
which consists of rice, banchans, a
choice of protein and a fried egg,
all held together by a red pepper
sauce. The description on their
menu for bibim-bop says a little
Seoul in a bowl. They like puns.
And as far as sides go, one essential dish is Takoreas sesame fries;
they are an absolutely addictive
combination of salty and sweet.
For those craving a similar
style of food without the sit-down
restaurant atmosphere, Hankook
Taqueria, which is affiliated with
Takorea, is just a short drive away
in the west side of Atlanta. At
Hankook, orders are taken at the
counter and food is brought to
the table. It has a definite hole-inthe-wall-type atmosphere, and at
the cost of the menu being more
limited, Hankook offers similar
food for lower prices. However,
the menu still has tacos, burritos,
bibim-bop and the beloved sesame
fries. They also have daily taco
specials to shake up their cuisine
offering.
Additionally, for patrons 21
and up, Hankook is a great pit
stop after visiting one of the breweries in close proximity, such as
Monday Night or Red Brick. An
entre at Takorea will be about
$10, while a similar entre at
Hankook is closer to $7. In addition to being easier on the wal-

let, Hankook also provides faster

service than Takorea. This is not
a knock on Takoreas service, but
an inherent difference in the type
of restaurant each is. Even though
Hankooks service can be mighty
fast, it can get extremely busy
around lunch hour, so hopeful
customers are advised to plan accordingly.
Hankook Taqueria has even
garnered national critical acclaim
on such television outlets as the
Food Network and the Travel
Channel on the shows The Best
Thing I Ever Ate and Food Paradise, respectively.
The episode in which Hankook was mentioned on The
Best Thing I Ever Ate was the
Bang for the Buck episode, and
famous television personality Alton Brown chose their bibim-bop.
Hankook was also mentioned on
Food Paradise on the Manliest
Restaurants episode.
Takorea and Hankook have
done so well that another location has been added just outside
the perimeter on the north side in
Dunwoody. This location is also a
fast casual dining format similar
to Hankook, but, unfortunately,
it is quite a drive away for those
who live in the city.
Takorea and Hankook are
both great options for those who
seek to broaden their palates, or
simply enjoy a good meal.

With a Korean flair added to the typical Mexican spice, Takorea and restaurants like it aim to please in a unique sense.

Gone Girl beats odds, revitalizes mystery genre

FILM

Gone Girl
GENRE: Mystery, Thriller
STARRING: Ben Affleck,
Rosamund Pike
DIRECTOR: David Fincher
RATING: R
RELEASE DATE: Oct. 3

OUR TAKE:
MATTHEW PARK

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Even though he is known for
having a knack for filming twisted
and maniacal deeds, director David Fincher has managed to make
a movie that is at the same time
luxurious, dreamy and discomforting.
Carrying over from his earlier
works such as Se7en, Fight Club
and Zodiac, Fincher has grown
into one of the most mature
modern directors working today.
While Gone Girl may not be his
best film to date, it surely is an excellent example of what a Hitchcockian movie would look and
feel like during the iGeneration.
On the gloomy morning of
their anniversary, Nick and Amy
Dunne (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike) find themselves in
trouble when Amy ends up missing. After calling the police and
hiding several truths about Amy,
Nick quickly becomes the primary suspect. Who is an easier

In Gone Girl, Affleck undoubtedly brings the most star power to the table. But, Pikes performance as the missing housewife underlies the deep impact that the film makes on its audience.

target than a sociopathic husband

whose wife has gone missing?
Oh, but wait theres more: financial issues, life insurance trouble,
angry neighbors and even a note
in Amys diary noting that Nick
might kill her.
Viewers are left to ponder: are
all of these clues red herrings, or
do they actually point to Nick, a
typical thirty-something American male who owns a bar and
plays video games? To say anything more about the plot would
be a crime; for those who have read

Gillian Flynns novel, there should

be no worries. The film, while it
does reveal several missteps, is a
near flawless adaptation. To make
matters better, Flynn also wrote
the masterful screenplay.
This movie spans a lengthy two
and a half hours, and at times it
feels much longer. Luckily, boring or drawn out do not accurately characterize the pacing
and tone of the movie. Gone Girl
slowly, but elegantly, reveals a disturbingly intense story. Countless
plot twists and surprises invite

viewers to look closer into Amy

and Nicks crumbling marriage;
as their stories collide, we do
not know whom to trust, which
makes the viewing experience exhaustingly exciting.
Gone Girls dark, biting humor
allows for more realism and connectivity as well. Fincher is known
to complement his actors cold,
intelligent expressions with the
films muted, unsaturated look.
Without a doubt, this film presents a beautiful cinematographic
production.

The smart, witty dialogue does

not come off as forcefully hip either. As we watch Amy and Nicks
romantic past, we can comfortably
laugh and smirk over two writers
exchanging playful sarcasm. The
relationship between the actors
(and their characters) is supported
through strong chemistry, which
makes the crumbling love that
much more real and painful for
the audience.
While Fincher exposes an array of suspenseful homages from
the 50s and 70s, this modern
film is unique in its examination
of manipulative relationships, the
economy and idiocy in the media.
Aside from the darkly funny
and disturbingly sick themes,
Gone Girl revels in the performance of Pike. She serves as the
primary driver for the gripping
quality the movie permeates.
While Affleck, Neil Patrick
Harris (Desi, Amys ex-boyfriend), Carrie Coon (Nicks twin
sister) and Tyler Perry (Nicks lawyer) expertly mold themselves as
relatable people in a nightmarish
world, Pike easily takes the trophy
for the strongest performance.
Thankfully, Finchers ode to
the arguably dying suspense genre
is revitalizing. This is a high-end
B movie that shouldnt show Oscar season worthiness, and yet
it does. This is a story that is so
trashy, pulpy and messed up, that
it seems ridiculous to call it intelligent or mesmerizing, and yet it
is. Gone Girl is a must-see for any
cinematic thrill-seeker.

Shadow of Mordor offers detailed experience

RELEASED: Sept. 30

OUR TAKE:

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
With the recent release of
LEGO The Lord of the Rings, as well
as the upcoming third and final
theatrical installment of The Hobbit saga, the canon of the Middleearth universe has proven itself as
stable ground for fantastic, engaging adventures. However, delving
into the works highlighting the
expanded universe has proven itself to be shaky ground at best. Is
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor a
noteworthy title to add alongside
a much-beloved franchise?
Amidst the deep lore of J.R.R.
Tolkiens two legendary works,
The Hobbit and The Lord of the
Rings, players partake in an expansive journey with Talion, a
Ranger of The Black Gate, whose
job includes guarding Gondor
and keeping watch over the insidious Mordor. Uruks, various
captains of the orcs, ambush The

family. Resurrected by a Wraith,

Talions main goal in the land of
Mordor is to seek revenge.
Players may feel confused by
this plot in the beginning, but
they need not worry; the game
does not expect anyone to have
extensive background knowledge
of the Rings universe in order to
play the game effectively. Those
who enjoy the series will find great
satisfaction in exploring the massive map, reading the deep history
and noting all the other nods to
Tolkiens work sprinkled within
the game. The only real disconnections are within threads of the
opening plot. Nearly every aspect
of the game, from the buildings to
the flowers, has a profound story

tied to it. For those who are not as

tuned in with the universe, other
aspects can surely keep them interested in the game.
The story of murderous revenge
demands continuous combat, all
of which is done in an acrobatic,
free-flowing form reminiscent of
Warner Brothers other notable
video game franchise, the Batman:
Arkham series. Enemies can be attacked head-on for a gory fight or
be removed quickly by stealth options similar to the Assassins Creed
series. Direct combat is nothing
short of a marvelous beauty. An
extremely responsive and intuitive
fighting system has been put in
place, and is one of the best being
used in RPGs today.

Upon killing enemies, Talion

can level up to gain ability points
to purchase various perks on a
tree of combat upgrades (akin to
Skyrim). With a simple and quick
combat system that yields many
upgrade points, players can find
themselves addicted to killing enemies to further improve Talion
for his next big battle.
The core goal within the game
is targeting all the captains with
information provided by those interrogated, then picking them off
one by one. Once targeted, Captains show up on the map, alongside an image and a rank to show
how difficult they will be to kill.
Gameplay style affects players skill level as well. If a player

falls to a particular orc, then that

AI gains levels of power after
the fight and may even move up
ranks. In any subsequent battles,
it taunts Talion with its previous
victory and will be tougher to kill.
Later within the game, Talion
will be able to mind-control orcs,
which can be used to pit them
against their brethren or their
captain, and move them up the
ranks. Players can also choose to
interrupt hunts or duels between
orcs if desired.
When not in combat or doing
missions, Talion can explore the
beautiful environment of Mordor
before its time of desolation; everything from the lush landscape
and weapons, to the enemies,
are crafted with exquisite detail.
Climbing buildings and traversing areas within the game is a
breeze, thanks to mechanics borrowed from Assassins Creed.
This is a nice escape from
the campaign story, which is not
without fault and has numerous
lackluster moments. Deep lore
prevents Shadow of Mordor from
being devoid of story, but narrative does not fall within the highlights of this game. The emphasis
is put on combat, which is where
the game truly shines.
From innovative manipulation and detail of each enemy and
their ranks to the flawless fighting
style of Talion, this intriguing and
engaging gameplay lands Middleearth: Shadow of Mordor a spot on
the notable title list within the
Tolkien universe.

New Weezer album feels repetitive

Everything Will Be Alright

OUR TAKE:
ALEX COVINGTON

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Dont wanna compromise my
art for universal appeal / Dont
wanna be mass consumed, Im
not a happy meal; so sings Rivers Cuomo in Ive Had It Up To
Here, one of the songs on Weezers latest release, Everything Will
Be Alright in the End. Its a bold
statement, given how often accusations of selling out are levelled
against the band.
In the 90s, Weezer released
two albums which, at least retrospectively, are considered critical
darlings their self-titled debut
with its brash, joyous power pop
and Pinkertons memorably emotional tirades. But after a hiatus
following the initial poor response
to Pinkerton, their next release,
a second self-titled album commonly called The Green Album,
saw the band moving in a more
conventional, less ambitious direction. Theyve made attempts
to push their sound in new directions since then, but theyve
churned out a good deal of bland
pop as well, and critical appraisal
tends to place their first two albums head and shoulders above
the rest, and many of their fans
declared themselves betrayed.
Now, the band is making a deliberate attempt to win the favor

Weezers Although Everything Will be Alright in the End boasts a plethora of new hits from
the classic band. But, the collection feels like a throwback to their earlier, more popular years.

of those original fans; Everything

will be Alright in the End s first
single Back to the Shack promises there will be rockin out like
its 94, a nod to the release year
of their first album.
Its an appropriate comparison, because the album, with its
sunshine-infused sound and fluid
songwriting, definitely recalls
that brilliant debut. Theres definitely evidence that theres been
more thought and consideration
gone into this work, with plenty
of well-executed transitions and
well-crafted songs. Theres hallmarks of Weezer all over, with
plenty of catchy hooks (especially
on the tracks Eulogy for a Rock
Band and Ive Had It Up to
Here), a strong sense of melody,
and punchy guitars that occasion-

ally break out into memorable solos. The album as a whole has the
feel of the upbeat ending of a teen
movie, with a similar power to
sweep you up and add a little positive feeling to your day if youre
willing to not think too hard.
Theres a definite air of youthfulness about the album The
British Are Coming sounds like
it could be an elementary school
interpretation of the Revolutionary War, were it not for the mild
obscenity tossed at those redcoats
trying to run the show. The lyrics
tend to be clear and easily comprehensible with frequent use of
careless slant rhymes. The subject
matter of these lyrics is generally
light, with the exception of Foolish Father, a song dealing with
the subject of forgiveness and a

broken relationship between a

daughter and her father. Even
here, though, theres an irrepressible energy which always pulls the
music up, showing Weezer to be a
band more concerned with uplifting than reflecting, a fact which is
put on bold display in the exorbitant three-part closer collectively
called The Futurescope Trilogy.
Ultimately, the albums major
problem is its familiarity theres
a definite feeling of repetitiveness listening through the whole
thing, and, on a larger scale, its
not a record that strikes out too
far from familiar Weezer territory.
But while it imitates the bands
debut without reaching the same
heights, its still a welcome step
back towards that same level of
quality.

Setting up this distinction
went well for the first episode of
the new series. It reiterated briefly
the backstory presented in Arrow,
refining the details, introducing
important characters and posing
several questions like any good beginning to a story. The show even
encountered its first minor bad
guy, a man who supposedly died
only to return with the ability to
control the weather.
The Flash was well on its way
to cementing its image as a unique
show, worthy of interest for its
own sake, when it decided it had
not given enough credit to Arrow,
and Allen ran 600 miles to ask a
simple question of Queen because
phones are for smart people.
The first episode of The Flash
sets up a superhero whose sole
goal (so far at least) is to find his
mothers real murderer, and if
he happens to solve other crimes
along the way, so be it. In fact, Allen was contemplating this problem when he was struck by lightning, which caused him to be in a
coma for nine months.
When he wakes up, Allen is
surprised to find that he now has
powers. Allen is not, however, surprised that he woke up in a giant
out-of-business facility (manned
by only three people) that inexplicably appears to be fully operational minus one blown up
particle accelerator and a random,
conveniently labeled cage with its
door pried open.
In a more critical sense, while
The Flash has released only a few
episodes, and could very easily
change course, it appears to be
fraught with stilted dialog and
strange resolutions to easy problems. Overall, the show can best
be described as cheesy. While it
could be enjoyed for its plot or its
comic book focus, it is far easier to
imagine viewers being entertained
by its lack of believability.

Greenwald undefeated through three meets

JOE SOBCHUK

ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

Halfway into this cross country season, Techs Jeremy Greenwald has finished ahead of every
collegiate runner he has raced
and is helping to propel his team
to new heights. The season began over a month ago in Athens,
where Greenwald and the Jackets
defeated both Georgia and Mercer
at the UGA Invitational.
Two weeks later at the Florida
Mountain Dew Invitational, he
pulled away from the pack and
crossed the finish line in a careerbest 24:17, giving Tech the first
place finish over 11 other teams.
Greenwald followed that with a
first place time of 24:58, 10 seconds ahead of the next finisher, at
the Upstate Invitational to help
the Jackets take second place in
the event.
Greenwald feels that based on
the amount of training and dedication he has put into improving
as a runner, the success that he has
achieved so far is fully expected.
However, he does not feel that
these wins have put a lot of extra
pressure on him.
People kind of expect me to
win, I guess, Greenwald said.
But as we get into these bigger
races, I understand that Im not
going to go undefeated throughout the whole season, so I dont
really pay attention to any pressure that anyone else puts on me.
Its all about the pressure I put on
myself.
From here, Greenwald believes
that the team has the potential to
compete for a top spot at regionals and earn a spot at nationals. At
the very least, he hopes to make it
to nationals as an individual and
represent the team should they
not qualify.
We have a good group of
young guys, and they are pretty

inexperienced in those types of

races, so getting the experience at
the regional race is going to be a
plus for us, Greenwald said. If
we dont make nationals this year,
we can always come back next
year, and well have that experience under our belts, and it will
help us.
Greenwald competes for the
Jackets in all three seasons: cross
country and indoor and outdoor
track. He feels he has grown as a
runner over the past three years,
both mentally and physically.
I came in as kind of hardnosed, hot-headed, whatever
you want to say, Ive heard all of
them, Greenwald said. I wasnt
very disciplined with training or
racing, and it got me injured a few
times and I usually didnt race to
my potential. I think [cross country head] coach [Alan] Drosky has
helped a lot with that, and Im just
more mature as a runner overall,
and Im reaping the benefits of it.
He attributes his success as a
cross country runner to his aerobic
fitness, which becomes strengthened through long runs with the
team on Sunday mornings.
He rarely ran over 10 miles at
a time in high school but is now
running 16 to 18 miles every
weekend at a considerably faster
pace. He ran a total of about 85
miles a week ago, which he says
was the most all season. To put
that into context, some NCAA
powerhouses run upwards of 100
miles every week.
We kind of stick to the lowmileage plan, because we are a
bunch of middle-distance runners
basically, just a lot of track guys
that run cross country, Greenwald said. Well start tapering
here soon; well get down to 50
miles in the next few weeks.
Greenwald puts the biggest emphasis on running track,
though success in cross country is

also important to him.

Greenwald prides himself on
excelling in a wide range of races,
from the 800m in the outdoor
season to 10 km races in the fall.
I dont want to be a one-race
type of guy. I enjoy track a lot
more, but I love doing all of the
seasons, Greenwald said.
Since he is a track runner first
and foremost, he must run a patient race in order to not tire himself out too soon.
He does not push the pace, as
the best pure cross country runners will be able to maintain that
pace and win on stamina at the
end. Instead, he stays near the lead
pack for the majority of the race,
and uses his mile speed down the
home stretch to hopefully pull
ahead at the finish line.
With a lot of young, inexperienced runners on the roster, Greenwald has an important leadership role on the team. He leads by
example, doing exactly what his
coaches tell him to do and taking
care of himself properly outside of
practice.
When they see the success
that I have, maybe it fuels them
and motivates them to do the
same types of things, Greenwald
said. Its great to be a part of the
team and to have those guys and
that camaraderie. Its very exciting
to see the success of your team as
a whole and get to share that with
your teammates.
Greenwald says that his biggest
motivator is the fear of having regret later in life and that it pushes
him to achieve as much as he can
in the present.
I dont want to regret not getting the most out of myself, so I
push myself as hard as I can,
Greenwald said. I want to get to
where I feel like I have given it my
all and reached my potential, and
until I do that, Im not going to
stop running. I want to achieve

great things, and that motivates

me, and I dont want to regret anything when Im done running.
No matter how the rest of his
collegiate career at Tech plays
out, Greenwald plans on running
competitively long after graduation.

This is what I love to do, and

Im blessed to be able to do it as
my passion, Greenwald said. If I
can join a club or something after
college, whether Im getting paid
or not, Im going to keep running
and trying to get the most out of
myself.

JACKETS

Tech travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina,

this weekend to take on ACC division foe North
Carolina. The Jackets are coming off their first loss
of the season this past weekend against Duke. Tech
was down 31-12 halfway through the fourth quarter, but the play by quarterback Tim Byerly helped
Tech score two late fourth quarter touchdowns.
Tech is now 2-1 in the division,
and with Duke owning the
tiebreaker, this weekends
game against North Carolina is a must win.
Starting quarterback Justin Thomas was benched in
the second half of the Duke
game after throwing his second interception of the game.
Thomas entered the game
playing very well but was not
able to lead Tech on touchdown-scoring drives and had
an interception in the red-

The Tar Heels have also ditched their two

quarterback system. Quarterback Marquise Williams got all the meaningful snaps against Notre
Dame, and redshirt freshman Mitch Trubisky
will have to wait his turn to play.
Williams had a fantastic game against the
undefeated Fighting Irish this past weekend and
threw for 303 yards to go along with 132 rushing yards. Williams and true freshman running
back Elijah Hood will be licking their lips in ex-

terback.
Against UNC the offense will have to limit
their turnovers if they expect to win. Tech had 3
against Duke and did not force a turnover either.
The defense once again gave up a lot of yards on
the ground, but unlike in the game against Miami,
they were not able to force turnovers in the redzone.
UNC runs a similar offense to Duke, but
they appear to be more explosive in the passing game. Tech has struggled with teams who
run the zone read offense, and Duke may have
given a blueprint to UNC on how to move the
ball against Tech.
Techs defense continues to limit the big
plays, but they struggle to get teams off the field
on third and long.
If Tech expects to win this game, they need to
control time of possession and get DeAndre Smelter involved in the passing game. UNC hasnt
beaten Tech in 6 years, so they will give Tech
their best shot, like Duke did on Saturday.

citement to go against
Georgia Techs defense. Hood was
bottled up against
Notre Dame, but he
has the talent to give
Techs defense a fit.
Dukes running
backs combined for 5.2
yards per carry against Techs defense, and Miamis combined for 7.2 yards per carry.
If Tech allows UNC to run with this much
success, Tech will have a hard time keeping UNC
off the field, and the inexperienced defensive front
may be in for a real challenge to contain Williams
when he runs it himself.
For UNC to win against Tech, the Tar Heels
must follow Dukes game plan of controlling as
much of the clock as they can without turning
the ball over.
Williams is a more dangerous runner than the
other ACC quarterbacks Tech has faced, and if he
has the success against Tech that he had against
Notre Dame, Tech will be in for a long night.

PREDICTION: Tech 38, North Carolina 41

TAR HEELS

UNC head coach

Larry Fedora called Saturdays performance at
Notre Dame the turning point of the season.
Even though UNC
lost to Notre Dame
50-43, the Tar Heels
were up 14-0 early in the
first half on the road.
The turning point of the game was a roughing
the snapper penalty on a punt which gave Notre
Dame a second chance to score when UNC had
the momentum in the game.
This isnt the same UNC team that lost to East
Carolina 70-41; UNC will not fall over for an
ACC rival and let Tech walk into Kenan Stadium
with an easy victory.
The Tar Heels have played much better the last
two weeks against Clemson and Notre Dame,
two teams who are among the best in the country.
UNC sits at 2-4 right now in the season, and
a loss to Tech would be their fifth straight loss in
a row.

zone that helped give Duke the momentum to put

the game out of reach.
Thomas was battling through an ankle injury
as well, so that will be something to watch against
UNC. Byerly may continue to see additional time
if Thomas is not healthy, as Byerly proved on Saturday he has what it takes to be successful quar-

Jorgenson ready to return after knee injury

NIKHIL RAGDE

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Photo by Austin Foote Student Publications

Redshirt freshman Travis Jorgenson makes a reverse layup in a

preseason scrimmage versus Young Harris College last season.

The end of fall break marks the

beginning of the final stretch for
students in the fall semester. It
also signals the approach of the
college basketball season. Techs
mens basketball team will begin
their season on November 7, and
this years roster is quite different
from last years.
One returning player is Travis
Jorgenson, a redshirt freshman.
Jorgenson played point guard
in Techs first four games before
hurting his knee against Dayton.
It turned out to be a torn ACL
and ended Jorgensons freshman
season.
In the first four games played
during the season, Jorgenson was
averaging 4.3 points and 2.5 assists, including a career high eight
points in the season opener versus
Prebysterian.
Nearly a year later, Jorgenson
has recovered and is ready to get
back on the court.
Just trying to come back from
[an] injury is pretty tough, but Im
feeling pretty good right now. Just
trying to work my way back into
it, Jorgenson said.
Jorgenson was out for six
months after knee surgery, unable to shoot or do any sort of skill
work. After strengthening his
knee, he started practicing with
contact just a couple of weeks ago,
about 10 months after his surgery.
Last season was disappointing,
but he is looking forward to the

upcoming season.
I was a little shocked that it
happened, because its something
that you dont really think is going
to happen to you. But, you know,
Im feeling pretty optimistic now
and obviously really excited for
the season to start, Jorgenson
said.
Jorgenson has an excellent
chance to be the teams starting
point guard. He will compete
against Corey Heyward, among
others, for the job.
Trae Golden, former starting
point guard, has graduated, so Jorgenson will have to take more of a
leadership role this year as he will
have the ball in his hands most of
the time he is on the court.
While his missed time was far
from ideal, he feels he is an improved player from a season ago.
I think Ive become a better
shooter and a smarter player from
watching for a year, Jorgenson
said.
His return is good news for
Tech, as the Jackets saw many
players leave due to graduation
or transfers. The Jackets have five
transfer players along with the addition of five freshmen.
These first couple of practices,
were just trying to get used to everyone. But by the time our first
game starts, well have plenty of
practices, so well be ready to go,
Jorgenson said.
The roster changes have had an
effect on the experience and leadership in the roster as well. Four
transfer players are among the

eight upperclassmen on the roster.

However, Jorgenson believes
that the culture in the locker room
so far has been good and that the
addition of so many players has
not had any negative effects.
We have good leadership from
new guys and from guys who have
been in the program, so I dont
think thats much of a factor.
They obviously have to adjust to
the process and adjust for a new
school, so its probably tougher on
them, Jorgenson said.
This bodes well for the Jackets,
who will face solid competition
against fellow ACC teams starting in the spring. Jorgenson is
especially looking forward to the
home opener against Georgia and
has other areas of the schedule
that excite him too.
Im very excited to go down to
Orlando and playing in that tournament because its a good one.
And once ACC play starts up, its
going to be a tough road, so Im
excited for all that, Jorgenson
said.
It is relatively unknown how
Tech will do this season. The team
doesnt have much hype, and is
both receiving and losing key
players. Last year, Tech showed
promise at the beginning of the
year, but injuries derailed their
season.
The Jackets start their season
on the road against Clayton State
on November 7. They then come
home for the home opener against
instate rival Georgia on November 14.

Coming off their best season in the past decade, the

Tech womens ultimate team,
Wreck, is prepared to take the
next step towards success.
Wreck competes in the
Southeast region where they play
against teams such as Georgia,
Florida, Emory and Alabama.
For those who are unfamilar, ultimate is played with two
teams of seven, and the goal is
to get the disc into the endzone
to score a point. Ultimate has
concepts very similar to basketball such as zone offense and
defense. The two primary roles
are handlers and cutters. Cutters
are very similar to wide receivers,
and a handler is like the quarterback of the offense.
The team has seen recent success due to the outstanding leadership from the coaches and past
captains. Fourth year captains,
Cate Woodhurst and Donnya
Ajdari are prepared to leave a
lasting impression on the team
and have the goals set high for
this season.
When Ajdari and Woodhurst
arrived on campus, the team
hadnt made the regionals in 5
years. Both Ajdari and Woodhurst were fairly new to competi-

tive ultimate, but they picked

up the game quickly. Ajdari was
named to the all-region freshman team.
The following season, many
important newcomers joined
the season including third year
CS major Julia Ting. In the
2012-2013 season, Wreck began
to show signs of improvement
including a win in the Southeast regional, their first in seven
years.
I saw [Wreck] at FASET, and
then I was hooked, said Ajdari.
Ultimate Frisbee allows you to
still play a competitive sport and
go play other schools without being on the official Tech team.
The team has been steadily
improving, according to Ajdari.
Weve gotten better every
year at regionals. We went from
losing all our games...and last
year we tied for fifth with UGA,
Ajdari said.
During these years, a bond
began to form within the team.
Wreck does not believe there is
another organization with more
love for eachother than Wreck.
I love seeing new players coming in and just getting
thrown into this new environment and seeing them adapt
and learn the game and seeing
how far they come by end of the
season. I love playing with my
friends. Everyone on the team is

away from home, Woodhurst
said.
Their passion for ultimate
and each other has been a big recruiting tool for them these past
years. It has helped turn Wreck
into a very competitive program
in the Southeast region.
We say that Wreck is
FIERCE...an acronym for Fun,
Intense, Energetic, Reflective,
Competitive, and Eager to describe our values, said former
Wreck captain Leah Tsinajinnie.
Wreck is coached by Allison
Douglas and Maddy Frey; the
two of them have passed along
their knowledge of the game of
ultimate. Douglas and Frey both
play competitive club ultimate in
Atlanta (Ozone and Outbreak)
which has become very popular,
and many members of Wreck
have joined club teams.
Wreck has been practicing all
Fall semester, and they have been
very impressed with their rookie
class.
A couple of the rookies were
here for the summer semester,
and they throw all the time, and
they are into it. They already
caught the bug, and once you
catch the bug, its only a matter of time until you get really
good, Ting said.
Woodhurst plays for Ozone,
the top womens ultimate club in

the Southeast, and they recently

qualified for Nationals after winning their region. Nationals will
be hosted in Orlando, FL, on
October 16-19 Six other members of Wreck play for the newly
formed club, Outbreak.
I tried out in May. I went
through all the rounds, and Ive
been playing all summer. We
went to four tournaments and
won the Shawn Adams Memorial and regionals. Were going
into nationals ranked seventh in
the country, Woodhurst said.
Big news arrived on October
1, when Ajdari, Ting and Woodhurst along with third year Taylor Hartman found out that they
had been invited to try out for
the U-23 USA Ultimate teams.
The tryouts will take place November 22-23 in Orlando, and
they have the possibility of being one of 33 women selected to
compete in the 2015 World Ultimate championships.
It had been a dream for many
of them upon hearing about
Tsinajinnie trying out for the
2013 games.
I talked to one of the coaches
that went last year, and she said
regardless of who made the team
and who didnt, she just thought
that everyone was trying their
hardest, Ajdari said. Youre

outs,
Wrecks major rivals are the
teams in Georgia, but they have
great relations with all teams in
their section and region.
We are the most spirited
team in our region, and I really
believe that. Other teams recognize that, and we get along well
with every team. Of course its
always fun to beat UGA, and we
also get picky about Emory because we want to be city champions, Woodhurst said.
Most recently the team competed in a scrimmage against fellow in-state foes Georgia, Kennesaw State, GCSU and Emory.
Wreck finished 3-1, with their
only loss to Georgia on universe
point. The captains were very
pleased with their performance,
but all agree the team has yet to
reach its apex.
Wreck will compete next in
Classic City Classic on October
25 and 26 in Athens, Georgia.
CCC is one of the biggest tournaments of the year, and it will
be a big test for the team.
Next, the Wreck team will be
heading up to Athens to compete
in the Classis City Classic, which
according to Woodhurst, is one
of the biggest fall tournaments.
Then they will be going to the
Gulf Coast Warm Up. There,
Wreck will get to see other
teams, such as LSU and Auburn.
