USG BEGINS NEW PLAN TO PRIVATIZE HOUSING p5

NEWS

KENNETH MARINO
NEWS EDITOR

The upcoming launch of the housing privatization plan at nine public

universities across the state by the University System of Georgia (USG) has
caused some concern at Tech.
The Public Private Partnership or P3
plan allows Corvias Campus Living,
a private corporation, to develop new
housing units and manage old ones at
nine USG institutions. Corvias will be
in charge of construction, renovation
and management of the properties,
including charging rent to residents.
USG will receive rent from Corvias as
USG still maintains ownership of the
properties. USG will also receive $517
million from Corvias.
Tech is not one of the nine institutions included in the first phase of the
partnership; however, Tech may be included in future phases.
Georgia Tech is not in the first
phase; however, the P3 initiative is expected to have additional phases which
may include other institutions within
the University System of Georgia, said
Charles Sutlive, Vice Chancellor for
Communications for USG.
While USG has not yet announced
if Tech will join the privatization plan,
Tech President G.P. Bud Peterson
says that he is not worried about an ill
effect on Tech as a result.
Privatization of housing is a complex issue and would be helpful to
review a specific plan to determine its
impact on Georgia Tech and our students, Peterson said. I do, however
have confidence that the USG will
work with us to identify and establish a

Synjyn Days named ACC offensive back of the week

KARTHIK NATHAN

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
When it comes to the triple option offense, it seems like he can
do it all. Synjyn Days has thrown
for 200 yards as a quarterback,
rushed for nearly 1,000 yards as a
running back and even caught his
first career touchdown pass this
year.
After starting B-back Zach
Laskey went down against North
Carolina, Days was moved from
A-back to replace Laskey. Some
growing pains would have been
expected from suddenly playing a
new position, but the redshirt senior has exploded for 414 yards in
his 3 games at B-back, providing
unexpected but welcome depth

and allowing Laskey to avoid

rushing his recovery.
Position changes are nothing new to Days. He was originally recruited out of Hillgrove
High School as a quarterback but
switched to running back after
2 seasons and has alternated between A-back and B-back since.
Head coach Paul Johnson
praised Days athletic potential,
calling the B-back role Synjyns
natural position and saying that
we knew hed be something special for sure.
While the constant switching might have been confusing
and frustrating for some, Days
has embraced every change that
has come his way by adding 10
pounds in the offseason, constant-

ly watching film and always learning from the other Tech running
backs, especially Laskey.
The 62, 230 pound Days
takes great pride in his conditioning, which has allowed him
to carry the ball a whopping 65
times in the last 3 games, more
carries than he had in the previous
two seasons combined. The main
challenge he faced was remembering whom to block, but he credits
his sharp mind as his key to avoid
such mental mistakes.
Aside from the Georgia Tech
coaching staff, Days has had a
special source of coaching and
motivation: his parents. Paula and
Calvin Days have always been
very involved in Synjyns football

WHEN YOURE A STRANGER
On Nov. 6, an officer was
dispatched to the lobby of the
Beringause Building for an information report. There, the officer met with the female student
who called about disturbing text

She asked within her message
who was texting her but soon after, she began to receive intimidating messages from a person
she had no connection with.
The messenger responded,
A guy with a hard on, but the
female student did not respond.
But, the messenger continued to
harass the student with messages, like What are you wearing,
So what for dinner, and Want
to have some fun?
The officer asked the student
to fill out a Statement Form and
the GTPD soon investigated
whom the number belonged

The officer called the number

UHR considered bill 15J076
which is a bill to set up an ad hoc
committee to monitor the funding given to Mens Lacrosse.
A few weeks ago, SGA allocated a large amount of money
to the Mens Lacrosse Team.
During the discussion of that
bill, many GSS and UHR representatives expressed concern
that the organization was not
being above board.
The resolution creates a committee of four voting members
from UHR and GSS who would
review all of the finances of
the Team for the past two fiscal years to determine if policy

On Oct. 31, an officer was
dispatched to the Kappa Sigma fraternity house due to an
issue within the house. When
residents of the house came out,
they stated that they called the
ambulance in response to an
intoxicated female lying in the
womens rest room.
The officer came inside for
further investigation. The house
residents escorted the officer
to the woman and the officer
examined her. She was unconscious and not alert but was
breathing. The officer was able
to identify the woman. Upon
further investigation of the area,
the officer noticed that there was
vomit spread throughout the
bathroom.
The woman was later sent
to Grady and issued a violation
of student code of conduct and
charged with underage possession of alcohol.

Tech gets
grant for
car chargers
ISHAN MEHTA

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
The Department of Parking and Transportation Services
(PTS) at Tech has been awarded
a grant for almost $40,000 by the
Georgia Environmental Finance
Authority for the installation of
additional electric vehicle chargers.
There will be another 9 dual
port Level 2 chargers installed at
visitor-accessible locations and,
as per the clause of the grant, be
open for public use.
This is in response to an ever
rising demand for charging points
from drivers of an approximated
150 electric vehicle (EV) cars on
campus.
Lisa Safstrom, Campus Transportation Planner for PTS, who
solely handled the proposal for the
grant, says that an attempt will be
made to ensure that all charging
points are located at popular locations such as the Student Center,
North Deck and the Bobby Dodd
Stadium.
Currently, PTS has 2 dual port
level 2 chargers and a few level 1
chargers. A level 2 charger works
faster than a level 1 charger and
hence, requires more electricity.
One of the largest costs for the institute is the installation of these
chargers.
Drawing power from a source
is most of the installation cost for
an EV charger, Safstrom said.
We try to select locations which
are in proximity to power sources.
Some places we want to install
chargers but cannot simply because they are too far.
One of the challenges for Safstrom has been estimating the
number of EVs on campus. The

there is a risk in keeping them

we can mediate behavior other

campus, safety and the severity.
Fraternities sometimes have direct or indirect involvements with
negative or unlawful activity, such
as vandalism, theft, distribution
of alcohol to students under 21
and public disturbances through
various means. Despite these
incidents, Tanner Marcantel, Director of Greek Affairs, states that
good comes from these groups.
Fraternities and sororities are
student organizations that provide a home environment for their
members, Marcantel said. They
offer friendship, emotional support, and academic enrichment
for their membership. Members
of fraternities and sororities are

organizations sometimes become

In order of increasing severity,
the sanctions available for student

The Office of Student Integrity (OSI), which oversees individual and organization activity

takes different factors into consideration before they reach decision on consequences for negative
Greek activity.
Its not like we say that certain actions result in specific consequences, said Peter Paquette,
Director of OSI. It is really the

Concerning the improvement
of student activity under Greek
houses, Marcantel further states
that Tech continuously interacts
with Greek organizations to prevent negative activity.
Tech is committed to holding all organizations accountable
for any activities that are found
in violation of the Student Code
of Conduct and due process is
followed to allow the students or
student organizations a fair outcome, Marcantel said. Situations have occurred that resulted
in OSI investigating and taking appropriate action, but Tech
works with the fraternities and
sororities very closely to educate
members about issues before they
become a Code of Conduct violation.
With respect to Kappa Alphas
suspension due to hazing, Paquette states that it was the right
punishment. He also says that
students can use conversation as
a way to stop bad situations from
occurring.
I feel like it was an appropriate punishment, Paquette said.
Across the country there have
been unfortunate instances with
fraternities and sororities, and
I think that it often call for dialogue. Quite frankly, I think students should be the ones driving
it and saying what they want to
be happening on their campus or
not. Students have a lot of ability
to shape the culture of this place
look like.
On a regular basis, Greek
groups, as well as other organizations, are expected to abide by the
Student Code of Conduct and investigations are held to hold individuals and, in some cases, entire
groups that are responsible for any
violations in question.

Zimbra to Outlook
ISHAN MEHTA

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
The Office of Information
Technology (OIT) began to shift
students e-mail boxes from the
existing Zimbra mailbox to Outlook earlier this year.
All students enrolling after
July 2014 have been given an Office 365 account. Currently faculty and staff mailboxes are being
migrated, and OIT plans to give
the students currently using Zimbra an option to migrate by early
next year.
Back in 2010 Zimbra was introduced to campus in hopes to
consolidate the multiple collaboration services on campus, said
Rachel Moorehead E-mail Service
Manager for OIT. The College of
Engineering piloted its usage and
then transitioned it to OIT in order to grow it to the campus-wide
solution is it today. It was an Institute decision to adopt Zimbra as
the centrally support e-mail, Calendar, and Collaboration service
on campus.
OIT handles around 4 million
messages per day and around 16
terabytes of data from all mailboxes. The reason for the transition was to build a service that
is suited to the needs of the users
now and in the future and to have
a service that increases productivity but having a higher level of interoperability.
The Georgia Tech community decided to shift to an Outlook solution in order to provide a
more robust, integrated e-mail experience, Moorehead said. With
Zimbra aging quickly, there was
a need to re-evaluate our e-mail
service on campus. We started
the discovery project back in early
2013 and evaluated the various

e-mail service offerings available

such as Gmail, the new version of
Zimbra and Microsoft Exchange.
Some of the challenges of the
migration according to Moorehead were understanding the
differences between the Outlook
service and the Zimbra service as
well as gaining community endorsement. According to Moorehead, over the last eight months,
various campus groups have provided feedback and adjustments
have been made according to their
unique needs. There will also be
training opportunities so users are
aware of the new benefits and the
differences of the two systems.
Outlook allows us to provide
a mobile-first, enterprise-class
e-mail system to campus and
additionally enables us to have
significantly larger mailboxes,
Moorehead said. It also has integration with the other cloudbased Office 365 services such as
Lync and OneDrive for Business
and the Microsoft Office suite.
The Office 365 service will give
users access to e-mail, calendar
and contacts and will be accessible
by PCs, Apple products, a web client and mobile devices. This does
mean that the data will be located
on Microsoft-owned servers off
campus. According to the OIT
website, the agreement with Microsoft states that, Microsoft will
not scan, mine, or use our content
for advertising or other purposes
beyond offering Georgia Tech the
services that we have contracted.
Georgia Tech remains the sole
owner of all our data (rights, title,
and interest).
Some features of the Outlook
inbox are 50 gigabytes of storage,
access to the mobile app, integrated address book and shared
calendar.

Peterson answers questions on campus issues

Photo by John Nakano Student Publications

Tech President G.P. Bud Peterson speaks at parents weekend. Peterson speaks about the pressing campus issues.

The Technique sat down this

week with Tech President G.P.
Bud Peterson about some of the
biggest issues on campus. Below
are excepts of our questions and
his responses.
In the last four years, there
have been four different fraternities that have been either
suspended or put on disciplinary probation. In light of that,
how is Tech going to change its
policy either on oversight or on
punishment for organizations?
Im not aware of any initiative
to change our policies and change
the way we do this. Its interestingsome of the editorials in the
Technique say the administration
needs to do this and this and this
and one of my responses when I
read some of those sometimes is
wheres the student responsibility
portion of this.
Id like for the Interfraternity
Council (IFC) to take greater role
and a responsibility in providing
oversight and guidance. And one
of these fraternities was selling,
you know, they had an open bar
in the basement. They had a sign:
beer $4, wine $5, mixed drinks
$6 and theyre selling stuff to underage students.
So a lot of times, that has a lot
to do with the national office, so
we work with the national office,
but I guess if there was one thing
I wanted to see, it would be I hope
that the IFC takes some initiative
to try to help make sure we dont
have these kinds of challenges and
issues in the future.

I hope the student organizations increase the amount of

responsibility they take so its not
the administration coming down.
I would rather the Interfraternity Council govern these actions
than it go through us and then to
the national office.
Somebody knew that they
had an open bar right? I mean
this wasnt right and so it should
be the administration that has
to find it and take action. How
about some self governance and
leadership?
What can we expect to see
from the Institute to helps
students who are dealing with
stress and more serious mental
health issues?
Well the students are doing,
have a number of initiatives. I
think youve seen the Youre
Awesome video. That was all
student oriented. Ms. Durham
has chaired several task forces: the
mental health task force.
We had a wellness report from
the wellness committee and what
weve done is were combining
those initiatives, and we have an
office of strategic consulting that
Sonia Alvarez Robinson is leading. Alvarez Robinson is the director of that, and weve asked her
to look at these two reports, come
back with a recommendation and
an organizational structure by
November 15th. We are going to
create, and I dont want to get too
far ahead, but I believe were going to create an office that oversees the Wellness Initiative.

Now that you have hired a

new title IX coordinator from
the board of regents, when will
he be here and when will the
new sexual violence prevention
director be here?
So we did an advertisement,
a national search. People from
all over the country applied and
the person we hired happened to
be working at the system office,
Burns Newsome. So and we felt
like he was the best qualified individual.
We want to be a little careful
that we dont want to hire someone thats responsible for creating
and overseeing this wellness initiative and then be too prescriptive about telling them exactly
who to hire and what types of
positions. Its kind of what we did
the office of Institute Diversity.
The committee came forward
with a list of about 20 recommendations and I said, Im going to
accept recommendation number
one and were going to hire a vice
president of institute diversity and
have them report at the cabinet
level and then Im going to give
that person the 19 recommendations and let them establish their
office and create the office. And
thats kind of our intent here.
Hopefully well be up and
were trying to move this forward
very quickly. We asked strategic
consulting to do this, I said I want
a report, can you do it in 60 to 90
days? And they said no. I said we
really need it in 60 to 90 days and
so thats what their goal is.

plan that will be in the best interest of the students, faculty and
staff of Georgia Tech, much like
we did with the Graduate Student
Health Insurance issue a couple
of years ago that saved our graduate students hundreds of dollars a
year for better coverage.
Another concern has been the
possibility of rent hikes. According to Sutlive, there is a cap in
place that prevents rents from going up by more than 3 percent per
year.
The University System will
have contractual control over rent
increases and will use this oversight to ensure costs stay tightly
controlled, Sutlive said.
One of the most controversial
parts of the P3 plan was the Geor-

gia statewide referendum that

made the bill possible. Proposition
1, which appeared on Georgia ballots last Tuesday, gives Corvias a
tax exemption for operating USGowned property.
Critics of the measure, including Sen. Mike Crane (R-Newnan), who voted against the referendum in the Georgia Senate,
say that the proposition gives an
unfair advantage to corporations
running USG-owned property
over those that run private apartments off-campus.
I really look at the law and
I think it always ought to treat
everyone equally, Crane said. So
thats my main concern with it.
Another common criticism of
Proposition 1 is that the wording
was confusing and that many voters, including Tech students, were

not properly educated on the effect of the measure.

As student leaders in SGA,
we think state legislators and the
Board of Regents failed to properly seek student input before
adding the recent referendum
item regarding student housing
to the ballot, said Dillon Roseen,
Undergraduate Student Body
President. While it is the responsibility of voters to do their due
diligence and research issues on
the ballot before voting, it is also
the responsibility of law makers to
actively seek feedback from their
constituents and any group that
may be affected by a new law.
The ballot measure states simply that it allows property owned
by the University System of Georgia and operated by providers of
student housing and other facili-

ties to remain exempt from taxation. Many voters interpreted

this to mean that USG itself
wouldnt pay taxes on its property,
not realizing it would give this tax
exemption to private companies.
Oftentimes, the referendums
on the ballot, theyre written in
such a way that theyll only pass,
Crane said. If you look at the
vote turnout, people overwhelmingly supported it but they really
had no idea what its going to do,
which is pretty difficult when it
comes to referendums on the ballot, to explain some of these complex issues with them.
Some worry that the privatization is not in the University Systems best long-term interest.
I just recognize that the private sector is very smart and
theyre not going to lose money

site, DriveSeat, only recently added the option for such cars.
People can now update their
make of car on the website, Safstrom said. So, the only numbers
I had were those based on the
applications for charging spots.
While walking around campus
I used to manually note the any
electric cars and add them to the
record. Please everybody update
your profile on driver seat.
The EV charges are installed in
collaboration with ChargePoint,
a company which owns nearly
20,000 charging stations across
the country. With their platforms,
users can get real time data such
as seeing which charging points
are empty and how much charging time is required for their car.

in the deal and if theyre going

to make money then theyre going to protect themselves against
the very worst risks that exist out
there, Crane said. I dont know
how the taxpayers of Georgia and
eventually the students who are
paying for housing are going be
protected in this transaction.
Others, however, feel that the
partnership will allow USG to offer students and taxpayers a better
value.
The Public Private Partnership will help keep the cost of
student housing provided by our
colleges and universities low and
affordable, Sutlive said. We also
expect our campus housing partner will bring innovative design
ideas to improve the overall quality of our campus housing experience.
Users can also get a text alert
when their car is charged.
On campus, Safstrom has
seen a steady increase in the usage of these charging points. She
explained that owning an electric
car is extremely lucrative in Atlanta.
You get a lot of state and federal tax incentives for owning an
EV in Georgia, Safstrom said.
Most people just lease these cars
because of the constantly changing technology in the field. Atlanta is the number one city for sales
of Nissan Leafs in the country.
Around 90 percent of the EVs on
campus are Leafs.
The state of Georgia currently
gives a $5,000 tax credit for zeroemission vehicles, which is in
addition to the maximum allowed
federal of $7,500.

Adding Co-Ed Housing Option

Updating current infrastructure to meet students needs

As early as 2005, universities across the
country began adding optional gender
neutral or co-ed housing options for students who prefer to live in quarters with
persons of other genders, a service which
Tech could easily provide for students by
rearranging existing infrastructure.
Gender neutral housing would allow
students to feel comfortable in their dorm,
regardless of their gender expression or
identity. By setting aside just a few floors
of a single residence hall as gender neutral,
students could room with their friends
regardless of the sex they are legally recognized as. Most importantly, trans and
nonbinary students who struggle to live
with other students who share their gender identity would benefit from this set-up.
Gender neutral living arrangments would
provide a more understanding atmosphere,
and would not forcibly out students.
Additionally, rooms would only be optin, allowing students to have full control

over who they choose to live with. Nowhere would Tech allow random assignment to persons of opposite gender to the
same room without all parties involved
having explicitly opted into living together. With most buildings already co-ed
by floor, the solution is simple, and Tech
could easily advertise it as an option as
early as next year.
Some would argue that this living situation promotes cohabitation; but, given the
current housing structure, it is not as if cohabitation is not already occurring, albeit
unoffically.
We are not asking for a complete overhaul of the current housing system only
for a small adjustment. Moreover, it is important for the Institute, and part of the Institutes duty, to provide all Tech students
a safe environment to live and learn in.
Making simple changes to the pre-existing
structure is just one more way they can do
that for very little cost or inconvenience.

Upsetting lack of gameday coverage

Earlier this week ESPN announced that it would be broadcasting our annual game against
Georgia at noon on the SEC
Network this year, and Tech
fans did not react kindly to the
news.
A game that will most likely
feature two ranked teams in one
of the most heated rivalries in
college football has been relegated to a weak time slot on a premium channel that is biased in
favor of one of the participants.
Tech has been fighting for a
decent TV slot all season. By the
end of the year, only three of the
Jackets 12 games will have been
on an easily-accessible channel:
the Virginia Tech and Clemson
games got the noon ESPN slot
(with College Gameday serving
as its lead-in), while the whiteout game against Miami was on
at 7PM on ESPN2.
Otherwise, we were on ESPNU three weeks in a row
and had the 12:30 ACC Network slot twice; including the
matchup against defending
ACC Coastal champion Duke.
A typical college football fan
would have to make an actual
effort to find and watch most of

our games, which hurts the programs exposure.

There has been a lot of talk in
the last few weeks about ESPNs
perceived bias towards the SEC,
and ESPN has vehemently denied its existence.
However, evidence shows
that ESPN devotes significantly more time to SEC teams on
shows like SportsCenter and
College Gameday than teams
from any other conference, even
when on-location at a non-SEC
school.
They also own the SEC Network, so it is in their best interests for the SEC to do well.
Putting a fierce rivalry game
between a SEC team and a nonSEC team on the SEC Network

is a breeding ground for more

evidence of bias.
I do not expect the announcers for the game to be partial at
all. Instead, I foresee them focusing most of their attention
on Georgia, while our highlights
and storylines are downplayed. I
expect them to get some of our
players names wrong, refer to
Synjyn Days as our fullback,
and overall not have a clear understanding about how our offense actually works.
They may even spread misinformation about how we block
illegally (we dont) or how
our offense is a gimmick, which
could certainly impact a recruits
opinion about our program as
he is watching the game.

I have heard Tech fans complain about how often our games
are on the ACC Network, since
it is a syndication network (not
an actual channel) that is only
broadcast in ACC markets, limiting the exposure of our team.
However, at least those broadcasters do their homework and
show a genuine interest in both
teams involved.
To make matters worse, students who remain on campus
over Thanksgiving break will
not be able to watch the game
on their own TVs, as we do not
get the SEC Network through
ResNET.
This means that we will either have to stream it from a
shady website (which can vary
in quality from blurry to unwatchable), find an off-campus
friend who gets the channel, or
go out and watch it at a sports
bar, where we will surely be outnumbered by rowdy UGA fans.
For the record, I do not
blame ResNET for not carrying the channel, since there is
really no reason for a Tech to
pay extra for it, as our games
ideally should never be on that
network.

the semesters worth of studying and workload that we may

to the pot of fun, Hell Week is

painful, test-filled days before
Thanksgiving. So get your coffee brewing and thinking caps
straightened, because finals
are upon us Tech.

SEC Network

Because we dont go to an
SEC school, its not surprising
Tech cable doesnt include a
package to watch SEC games.
But who would have thought
that when it comes to the upcoming Tech v. UGA game,
the television provider will
only be an SEC Network.
What does this mean? Tech
students will have to go out of
their way to watch the biggest
game of the year. Because that
makes sense.

Paul Johnson is currently in his

seventh year as head coach at Tech
and has compiled a 55-34 record,
which is the third best winning
percentage in Tech history.
Only John Heisman and Bobby Dodd have a higher winning
percentage at Tech and both of
those coaches won national championships and have statues outside
the football stadium.
In the days of Chain Gailey,
Tech football was the definition of
mediocrity. Gailey only won more
than seven games once and Gailey
was nicknamed Mr. 7-5 by Tech
fans. Despite having Calvin Johnson, who is on the of the greatest receivers of all time, Gaileys
teams struggled to win big games
with him there.
Johnsons first season trumped
anything Gailey had accomplished at Tech. He finished the
regular season at 9-3, including a
48-42 win in Athens over Georgia. It was the first time Tech had
beaten UGA in eight years.
The next season Tech won 11
games and the ACC Championship, the most wins in school
history and Techs first outright
ACC Championship in 19 years.
Johnson trumped all expectations
in his first two years, which might
had been some sort of a curse as
fans began to expect these kinds

of results every year.

2010 was a bad year for Johnson and Tech football, but alot had
to do with losing their top running back, wide receiver, defensive
end and satety early to the NFL.
Another big factor in that season
was star quarterback Josh Nesbitt
breaking his arm in a game at Virginia Tech when Tech was dominating. Tech ended up losing that
game and without Nesbitt the season was a lost cause.
Recruiting also began to catch
up to Tech and hiring Al Groh as
defensive coordinator set the program back a couple of years.
This year, Tech has the most
talented player at quarterback
since Joe Hamilton, the 1999
Heisman runner up. Justin Thomas is only a sophomore and has
proven he has what it takes to succeed at the quarterback position.
Currently Tech is 8-2 including wins against Virginia Tech
and Miami. Tech beat both Virginia Tech and Miami in the same
year for the first time since 2006.
Tech is also ranked #22 in the
nation and have the best and most
efficient offense in the entire country. Recruiting has also turned
around as Techs 2015 class is the
best its been in almost a decade.
Johnsons contract should be
extended and it should be a no

brainer. Blowing up the whole

thing because Johnson has struggled versus Miami and Virginia
Tech and is 1-5 against UGA is
asinine. UGA is a football factory. They get the best talent in the
country and have the best player
in America.
All they care about in Athens
is football and they currently have
Todd Gurley, who is the best football player in college.
Tech isnt a university, it is an
Institute of Technology and is
restricted by majors, calculus requirements and academic qualifications that no other D-1 school
has.
You dont see MIT or Cal Tech
having successful football programs.
Tech has had major success
on the national level in the past
25 years, but 2014 Tech is a completely different Tech than the
1990 Tech that had a national
champion football team.
The 1990 team was also an
once in a generation team led by
Bobby Ross who is one of the few
football head coaches that has
won a national championship and
coached in a Super Bowl.
Tech fans and alumni need
to appreciate the consistency the
program has had over the past two
decades. 18 straight bowl appearances, 20 seasons without a losing
record in ACC play and an 11-9
record over Clemson.
Whenever Johnson leaves, it
should be on his own terms because if he isnt kept around next
year you can count on about five
seasons of being one of the worst
teams in the ACC.
Johnson has two giant games
left this regular season. A win versus Clemson this weekend should
guarantee an extension.

The ongoing fight in the world of video games

Over the past two decades,
video games have changed. Once
considered a cheap toy catered to
kids, gaming today is the most
profitable entertainment medium
in the world, its revenue in 2014
doubling that of movies. No one
can deny that video games are the
future.
But you dont get to multibillion dollar industry without
making a few enemies. If you
follow the gaming scene at all,
you probably have noticed the
hashtag #GamerGate in social
media like Facebook, Twitter, and
Google+.
It represents the fight and disagreement between video game
fans and gaming press and critics, and it has been going on for
months now. To my dismay, this
conflict is significantly mispotrayed to many, and its important
that people get the correct picture.
In short, GamerGate is a movement of consumer revolt triggered
by a series of revelations of corruptions and misconducts that
have been taking place in gaming press. Back in August, gamers learned that a game developer
Zoe Quinn was involved in sexual
relationships with multiple writers
in gaming press, such as Kotaku
and Rock, Paper, Shotgun, in an
attempt to gain favorable coverage
of her games and generally boost
her career.
Following this, further investigations revealed that such act
is considered a rather normal
practice in the game industry and

there existed a behind-the-curtain

group of writers from different
organizations who colluded with
one another to pass on their own
narratives and political agenda in
their publications.
In other words, they abused
their power to decide what gets
published and what gets censored,
based exclusively on how it benefits the members of the group.
It was unquestionably a breach
of journalistic ethics and integrity on
so many levels, and
obviously gamers
were infuriated.
To make the
matter worse, gaming press went on
to further abuse its
power to save its
own skin and began silencing the
masses, banning anyone who got
involved in online discussion of
this blatant corruption and publishing bad press about developers
(and, by extension, their games)
who spoke against the medias
wrongdoings.
As a final nail in the coffin,
corrupt writers from multiple
gaming media sites published over
13 articles, all declaring that gamers are terrorists and need to die.
It was clear that gaming press
desperately needs a reform, and
thats what GamerGate is about.
Some argue that corruption in
gaming press is no serious matter because its just about video

games. Unfortunately, gaming

today is a too big deal to shrug
off. Its a multi-billion dollar industry, and if there are journalists
who want to write about such a
lucrative field of entertainment,
consumers must be able to expect
a certain standard of journalistic
integrity.
The biggest issue of GamerGate is that people who were in-

about gamers attempt to drive

females away from the gaming
industry because they were turned
into misogynists as a result of the
games they play.
Contrary to the gaming press
claim, none of the death threats
have been ever proven sent by
GamerGate supporters, let alone
gamers. There is no evidence
that shows that GamerGate was

It is the most pitiable that

growth of gaming is being hindered by the corrupt individuals
who are cashing in on the industry the easy way and pushing
their agenda for their own gain by
abusing their power.
I hoped to bring this matter to
Tech students attention because I
know for a fact that you are too
smart to be fooled by dishonest
press who make arguments against
gamers with no evidence. Tech is
one of the nations leaders in independent video game design and
development. There are so many
different resources that Tech has
to offer that help students make
their own games, applying what
they learned in a classroom and
encouraging innovations.
I am in no way in favor of corrupt writers discrediting and dismissing some of your future works
because they dont fit in with their
narrative or you didnt offer them
bribes or sex for positive coverage.
Video games are the work of art,
and they deserve to be treated and
covered fairly for their own merits, free of personal agenda and
political beliefs.
This is arguably the toughest
time for gamers and game developers alike in history, but GamerGate is a fight worth fighting for,
defending the freedom of artistic
creativity and honest press coverage in video games.
They said gamers are dead, but
heres the bad news. Gamers never
die; we will always respawn until
we beat the final boss.

Library exhibit showcases old technologies

MEGAN PRESTON

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Frequent library-goers may
have noticed an unusual new
exhibit on the first floor of the
library: retroTECH. With antiquated and out-of-date technologies, such as Apple computers
from the 80s, radios from the 30s
and telephones from the 60s, the
exhibit includes artifacts that fill
several display cases at any given
time.
The technologies presented
are rotated out every Wednesday,
providing a steady stream of novel
inventions from another time. Accompanied by a short backstory,
each piece has been temporarily
loaned to the retrospective exhibit
by Tech students, faculty or staff
members and alums. The exhibit
has, also, been fittingly named
retroTECH. Created by crowdsourcing, concept ideas and first
named in 2006, retroTECH
draws on the resources and ingenuity of its patrons to create a dynamic exhibit.
Wendy
Hagenmaier,
the
Digital Collections Archivist in
charge of the display, describes
retroTECH as an opportunity for
exploring and digging through
the past to inspire future ideas.
She claims that the exhibit also
aligns well with the history of

Georgia Tech as a technical institution.

Moreover, the library, in partnership with Project One, is sponsoring this exhibit. Project Ones,
a new program aimed at easing
the college transition for first-year
students and inspiring creativity
in the student body, is promoting
the theme of Digital Lives. RetroTECH showcases the evolution
of digital lives among Georgia
Tech patrons while emphasizing
technologys profound impact on
individuals.
The library is hoping to expand the frequency of its exhibits
in the coming years using retroTECH as a prototype. Visitors
to retroTECH are encouraged to
share their experiences on Twitter
with the hashtag #retroTECHgt.
Hagenmaier also encourages visitors to vote for their favorite items
online. With over seventy people
loaning their much-loved technologies to the exhibit, the prototype
seems to be successful and will,
hopefully, translate into more exhibits in the future.
The retroTECH exhibit raises
various thought-provoking questions regarding technology. Why
do people hang on to old technologies when faster, better technologies are available? If something
has outlived its useful purpose,
why not just throw it away?

For some individuals, the obsolete items educational value

leads them to cherish the fairly
useless object. For others, there is
a strong, sentimental attachment
to the past technology.
A calculators backstory card,
for example, reads, I kept it be-

dia scare surrounding the Ebola

epidemic, the speech seemed especially relevant.
Focusing on the current situation in the AU region, Brigerty
began his speech by addressing
the AUs success in helping combat Ebola, while sharing his seemingly optimistic outlook for the
future.
While this outbreak is far

from over, I am fairly confident

the AU will act as an important
player in not only treating patients
but also in offering support to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea as
those three countries recover from
this outbreak, Brigerty said.
The speaker also shared his
thoughts on what he believed to
be the three main outcomes resulting from the major, frighten-

cause it had belonged to a late

co-worker of mine. Her name is
written on the bottom of the calculator. Another card stated that
the owner had needed no other
reason to keep an old computer
than because its awesome. The
exhibit hopes to emphasize that

people value material items more

for the stories they tell than for
their function.
The exhibit, located on the first
floor of the library by the Service
Desk, opened in early October
and will be open through the end
of the semester.

AU Ambassador speaks about the Ebola epidemic

BHAVANI JALADANKI
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Recently, Ambassador Reuben

E. Brigerty, a United States Representative to the African Union
(AU), came to Tech to talk to students and faculty about the challenges the African Union is facing
in its fight against the serious viral
disease Ebola. With the major me-

ing Ebola scare.

Going forward, I first anticipate the African Union will
conduct a lessons-learned session
identifying how the organization can respond better in the future, claimed Brigerty. Second,
I predict the AU will work closely
with the effective governments
on reconstruction and rebuilding
the lives and economies of those

countries, and third, I am sure

they will be working ever more
closely with the United States in
creating an African Center for
Disease Control.
According to the speaker, although the African CDC idea did
not strictly come about from the
Ebola situation, the virus certainly helped expedite the creation of
this body.
The AU, moreover, is strongly
encouraging the member-nations
to participate in the powerful
Ebola fight. For example, the
supranational organization requested that every African Union
leader send approximately twenty
healthcare workers to Ebolainfected regions resulting in five
hundred workers fighting the intense virus.
Although member-states can
make their own sovereign decisions regarding the Ebola outbreak, the Union also asked African countries to continue to allow
flights to land. Consequently, if
flights are blocked, people may
go underground to travel. Then it
will be much harder to track the
spread of Ebola since officials cannot account for who is traveling
where.
The AU Representative also
took questions from the audience,
therefore hoping to facilitate an
engaging debate. One of the selected members of the audience
posed a truly thought-provoking

Thoughts on
Voting
NICK JOHNSON

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
The US midterm elections of
2014 took place on November 4.
All 435 House seats and 36 Senate
seats were up for grabs. Additionally, many gubernatorial and state
and local races took place. Over
$3.7 billion was spent on this election, the most of any midterm in
history.
A great deal of importance was
placed on this election, with commercials and celebrities promoting voting. On a more local scale,
all who walked through Tech
Walkway the weeks before were
accosted by people asking if they
were registered to vote.
Despite their efforts and efforts
nationwide, voter turnout was
36.4% overall, the lowest in over
70 years and down 4.5% from
2010. Where did Tech students
fall, statistically speaking, in this
calculated distribution?
I did vote because it is my
duty as an American citizen, declares third-year ChemE Krishan
Patel. Although, I disliked the
mudslinging advertisements that
every candidate had. They were
annoying to see every day and detract from where the focus should
be.

I did not vote in this election

because I dont believe it was important, says third-year IE Lalit
Devraj. Not as important as the
presidential elections, anyway.
The Piedmont Room in the
Student Center housed a ballot
box for Fulton County residents,
including those not affiliated with
Tech. In the past there were complaints from these residents about
the cost of parking and the boxs
location to those unfamiliar with
Techs campus. For Tech students
from the area, though, this location was far more convenient than
driving home for the day.
I wasnt registered to vote,
plus I was busy with school and
would have been an uninformed
voter, says fourth-year ISyE Parsa
Naraghi.
I didnt register because I
didnt know when the election
was, says second-year ME Mohamud Gedi. By the time I found
out about two weeks before the
voting, it was too late to sign up.

The deadline to register to vote

varies by state but is usually early
to mid October.
I didnt vote because I was not
informed and not already registered, states second-year BMED
Nima Mikail.
Im out of state, and I didnt
want to go through the trouble of
getting an absentee ballot, says
fourth-year ChemE major James
DiLorenzo. I wasnt interested:
this election didnt have much impact on me as an individual.
Others who voted claimed
civic duty in one way or another as their reason for voting.
Those who did not cited not
receiv[ing] an absentee ballot to
not car[ing] enough to register
to its complicated.
There was a clear disinterest
in this midterm election, but the
numbers should rise for the presidential election in two years. By
then, there will be a new set of
freshmen and sophomores to goad
into registering and voting.

Ending sexual violence:

SGAs What If Video
ALEXA GRZECH
LIFE EDITOR

In partnership with One Voice

Atlanta, a service organization focused on increasing awareness for
sex trafficking, SGA recently released What If? - Georgia Tech,
a one minute video focused on
ending sexual violence on Techs
campus.
The goal of the video was to
encourage the conversation on
campus around sexual violence
prevention. We hear from administrators, faculty, and staff, but
we as students hold a substantial
responsibility in finding the solution and ending sexual violence
on campus, Macie Whatley, SGA
Vice President of Communications, said.
Anna Arnau, President of One
Voice, added, When I wrote the
script for the video, I wanted to
empower students and let them
know that we all have the opportunity to change the conversation
on campus.
The video, although short in
length, was certainly not short
in impact. By containing clips of
male students discussing sexual
violence, SGA and One Voice
sought to tackle the issue from the
lesser-seen male perspective.
The primary message of the
What If video is that everyone
must be engaged in the fight to
end sexual violence on our campus. Men have typically been left
out of the conversation and are often seen as instigators of violence
rather than as partners in finding
a solution, Dillon Roseen, Student Body President, said.
The male students that participated in the video viewed the
experience as truly rewarding, as
many knew individuals who were
survivors of sexual assault.

This issue of sexual violence is

something that hits close to home
for me in that I have numerous
friends at Tech that are victims
of rape, assault, or other forms of
harassment, shared Matt Josey, a
speaker in the influential video.
The participants, also, felt inspired by the video and hoped
theWhat If video would carry
out a message beyond that of empowerment.
My hope is that the video will
not only just empower people to
take action but comfort those that
need encouraging words, Chad
Sims, another speaker, said. Let
our friends and fellow jackets
know that someone is looking out
for them.
With the sexual violence white
paper and task force recently created to help revamp the way the
Institute responds to and prepares
for this major issue, the What If
video acts as another way to address the concern. SGA, personally, hopes to seek students opinions on this topic.
SGA is actively seeking student opinion, and videos are a
great way to get responses. SGA
was involved heavily with the initial white papers, and we want to
continue to have a hand in this issue as it greatly affects student life
on campus, Whatley claimed.
As Tech has again been in the
headlines for the infamous Rape
Bait email and allegations against
the disbanded Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, the What If video uses
this recent attention to rightly address the sexual violence issue. Instead of turning a cold-shoulder,
the Tech community confronts
the issue head-on.
Arnau emphasized that their
goal was to seize and opportunity
to say that sexual violence on campus is not okay.

Kappa Sigma event addresses suicide

ALEX COVINGTON

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Nov. 23 will see the kick-off
of the inaugural Kappa Sigma
games, which will support the
cause of kicking the stigma of
mental illness and suicide on
campus. The event will combine
spirited physical activity, such as
kickball and a three-legged relay,
with an awareness raising campaign aimed at suicide prevention.
Jonathan Edwards, philanthropy chair for Kappa Sigma and
organizer of the event, explained
that the goal is to make suicide
a topic that can be addressed directly, and for students to know
the resources available on campus.
The hope is that this will make
those who suffer from suicidal
thoughts and those close to them
better able to cope with the issue.
People want to help, but they
dont know how, he said. We
want to educate the students who
dont know how to react, because
if youre not told, its hard to be
expected to know what to do.
To that end, Kappa Sigma has
worked with a number of organizations to bring to campus information and support for those
whose lives have been affected by
mental illness. Three guest speakers will also come throughout the
day and share their own experiences with suicidal thoughts and
depression.
Proceeds from the games will
support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Various other groups, such as To
Write Love on Her Arms and the
Counseling Center at Georgia
Tech, will be at the event to offer
a chance for students to get information on getting involved or receiving support.
The importance of this cause
is felt especially by the members
of Kappa Sigma after one of their

brothers took his own life in the

spring of 2013. The event had a
profound impact within the fraternity and motivated an increased
awareness of mental health and
the fraternitys own function as an
influential support network.
When something like that
happens, everybody has questions, said John Merlie, president
of the Tech Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter. Why did this happen?
Was there something we could
have done? After the experience,
many of the brothers wanted passionately to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Theres a lot of brothers

whove been personally affected

by this, and so we know the real
pain of it, explained Edwards.
He stated that the games will offer
a means to channel that passion to
make a positive impact, to make
the campus a better place, and to
make the brothers in Kappa Sigma better men.
With this goal, the games will
not just be a day to relax and have
fun competing, but also a way of
addressing an issue that has affected the lives of many students
and faculty at Tech.
The games will take place on
Sunday, Nov. 23, and will feature
an engaging kickball tournament

simultaneous with games of bocce

ball and the beloved fraternity
game, cornhole. The events will
run from 10:45 in the morning to
5:30 in the evening, ending with a
three-legged race.
Various food vendors will be
present on site, with a percentage
of sales benefitting the American
Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Registration for an individual costs $15, with options for
either signing up with an entire
team of ten or being placed on a
random team.
The brothers hope the event
will prove successful while raising
awareness for the cause.

by stating that healthcare workers

do not always need to be sent into
African countries, as some countries including Liberia do not even
have the proper treatment for the
virus. Therefore, even if people
went to their respective doctors,
the doctor would just end up
sending them back home because
of the lack of necessary treatment
available.
Lately though, the African
communities are becoming more
aware of the deadly disease and
are taking the necessary precautions to prevent the viruss spread.
For example, sick people wrap
cloth around their faces and plastic bags around their hands to prevent further transmission. This is
not exactly the right kind of treatment, but there is at least some
type of awareness.
Another audience member
asked, When you were here last
January, you discussed how some
Africans came to the United States
to better understand American
culture and further cross-cultural
relations between the countries.
Is there a way for students in the
United States to go to Africa for a
very similar purpose?
Brigerty said that to his knowledge, there is no such thing. That
said, there are a number of opportunities for young American
kids to come to Africa supported
by the Peace Corps. Some young
United States citizens are being
funded to work in the African
Union for two to six weeks.
As a closing statement, Bigerty said that the African Union
declared an Ebola meeting every
month in order to address the
issue at hand. These meetings,
hopefully, will help decrease the
severity of the media-centered issue.
The Union has been going
full out since early August, and
I am confident the AU will continue to treat patients in Liberia
and Kenya as they recover, said
Brigerty.

Latest Nolan film reaches for the cosmos

FILM

Interstellar
GENRE: Sci-Fi
STARRING: Matthew
McConaughey, Anne
Hathaway, Jessica Chastain
DIRECTOR: Christopher
Nolan
RATING: PG-13
RELEASE DATE: Nov. 7

OUR TAKE:

NATHAN TRUITT

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Interstellar, the latest film from
Christopher Nolan (The Dark
Knight), may not be the directors
most complete film, but the sheer
scale and visual aspects of the
film make it more than worth the
time. The film clocks in at a huge
169 minutes, yet the pace is kept
up beautifully throughout.
The film begins with Cooper,
a former pilot (Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club), in
a world that can barely sustain
the human population. When
he stumbles across the remains
of NASA, he is sent on a mission
spanning decades to find a new
home for humanity.
Not much more can be said
about the plot without giving anything away. The story is a thrill
ride, filled with actual scientific
theory, but never lacking in the
human aspect that can be so eas-

ily lost with a film of such an epic

scale.
On its surface, this seems like
a film about space and humanitys
fascination with it. In reality, it is
much more on a much smaller level. It is a film about human desire
to survive against all odds and the
decision of whether to place ones
own survival over the survival of
the species.
Nolan is not a director known
for making his films pack an emotional punch, yet with this, he has
broken that mold in a huge way.
The relationship between Cooper
and his daughter is the real backbone of the story, instead of the
awe-inspiring journey that takes
up the majority of screen time.
Coopers daughter, Murph, is
played incredibly by child actor,
Mackenzie Foy.
The relationship between Cooper and his son (Timothee Chalamet) leaves a bit to be desired,
though. However, playing Coopers crewmate on the voyage is
the nearly always reliable Anne
Hathaway (Les Misrables). Her
portrayal of a scientist in the shadow of her father (Michael Caine,
The Dark Knight) is fantastic.
She effortlessly switches from the
cocky, more experienced scientist
to a vulnerable human being that
is in over her head, like the rest
of the crew. The performance of
the entire cast really furthers the
human decisions and ethical dilemmas that drives the plot of the
film.
While the character aspect of
Interstellar is nice to have, it is not

McConaughey and Hathaway lead the star cast of Interstellar, providing the space-drama film
with a base of experienced actors upon which it can build its incredibly expansive narrative.

why this film will almost certainly

become one of the most popular
of the year and possibly the decade.
The visuals portraying space
travel certainly do not disappoint.
The scenes in the early space travelling portion of the film include
some of the greatest images ever
put on a movie screen. In addition

to the magnitude of the visuals,

they are complemented extremely
well by a mix of total silence and a
jaw dropping score by Hans Zimmer, who has become the go-to
composer for Nolan in his recent
films.
With such a long film, the
question of whether the pacing
keeps up is a reasonable one. In

the hands of another director, the

film could have easily descended
from epic in scale, feeling and
length to something the audience
feels like they have to sit through.
Throughout the entire run time,
the film maintains a sense of purpose and at times, unbearable suspense.

Tech bands give innovative performance

CONCERT

Georgia Tech Concert

PERFORMER: Georgia
Tech Symphonic Band and
Concert Band
LOCATION: Ferst Center
DATE: Nov. 6

OUR TAKE:

JAMIE RULE
STAFF WRITER

Last Thursday, Nov. 6, Georgia Techs Symphonic Band and

Concert Band held their first
joint concert of the year on campus at the Ferst Center for the
Arts. The concert featured music
from names such as Steven Bryant, Frank Ticheli, Don Freund,
Ralph Vaughan Williams and
Eric Ewazen.
At seven, half an hour before
the show was to begin, there was a
small group of family, friends and
a smattering of curious bystanders
gathered outside the theater, eagerly awaiting the opening of the
doors.
When the doors opened at
ten after, the small crowd filed
into the theater, continuing their
own discussions while noting
the stages layout and a projector
showing information about the

boundaries of the performance genre, with some even drawing inspiration from computers.

informatively, if not creatively,

named Georgia Tech Symphonic
and Concert Band Concert. The
slide show alternated between two
screens. The first was an advertisement for the performance, the
same that had been posted around
campus in the previous week. The
second was a slide with a lot of
blue text that was impossible to
read. Realizing the ineffectiveness of this slide, it was changed
quickly to a normal font and color

revealing that, in an effort to save

paper, the concerts program and
notes could be found online.
At 7:25, the Concert Band
took the stage and, led by Brandon Hill, a Computer Science major and oboe player, began to tune
their instruments and otherwise
prepare for their performance.
The audience was not particularly
interested in this, but was respectfully quiet while the band readied
themselves. Precisely on schedule,

the conductor, Chaowen Ting,

walked onstage and, without preamble, began the concert in earnest.
The concert band was dedicated and knew their music well.
Their performance included pieces from composers Clifton Williams, Gordon Jacob, Arr. Frank
Ticheli and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Each song they performed
was done with precision, and the
casual listener would not be able

to find fault with their execution.

Throughout the performances
of both bands, the projector helpfully showed the title of the current piece and its composer, usually accompanied by his portrait.
Once the Concert Band finished their repertoire, the conductor acknowledged section leaders,
bowed politely and left the stage
to great applause. The concert
band hurriedly followed their
conductor, taking several chairs
and music stands with them while
others reset the stage in preparation for the Symphonic Band.
Throughout the performance,
the rather small audience grew
steadily until there were few empty seats beyond the first five rows,
which were apparently deemed
too close to be worth occupying
and remained empty for the duration of the performance. Punctuality was not particularly important, as viewers were steadily
trickling in until well into the performance and several even managed to show up after the Concert
Band had finished entirely and the
Symphonic Band had started their
second piece.
After the brief stage-preparing
interlude, the Symphonic Band,
conducted by Benjamin J. Diden,
began to play. The first two songs,

New TV shows face gauntlet of fall season

LINDSAY PURCELL
MANAGING EDITOR

Just four weeks into the fall

television season, the cancellations
have started to swarm in. Show
after show, such as Selfie and Bad
Judge, have fallen to the network
guillotine that is poor ratings.
But, there is hope yet. Several
new shows, such as How to Get
Away with Murder, are beating
the odds and renewing for next
season. Trying to choose which
shows to get hooked on and which
shows to give up on can be tricky,
so the Technique is here to tell you
what to watch and what to watch
out for, for the rest of the fall 2014
season.
CANCELLATIONS
This year, many critics were
shocked at how long it took for
networks to bite the bullet and
start cancelling shows. Some
blamed DVR and Hulu skewing
with ratings and causing networks
to feel uncertain about which
were fan favorites. Others claimed
the major networks, including
ABC, NBC and HBO, did not
have any good midseason replacements, meaning networks feared
ratings would only become worse
as shows were cancelled.
Finally at the end of October,
weeks after the bulk of unsuccessful shows had been cancelled
in previous years, ABC cancelled
the first show of the season, Manhattan Love Story. The typical
boy-meets-girl-in-New-York-City
story failed to engage viewers,
perhaps because the storyline was
poorly written and reminiscent
of Friends fanfiction. Perhaps it
failed because we were all too exhausted from Ted Mosebys character un-development to deal with
anything even slightly similar.
Either way, Manhattan Love
Storys cancellation began a series

Annalise Keating (Davis) leads the cast of ABCs How to Get Away with Murder, one of this seasons frontrunners as far as successful new shows go. Other newbies, however, were not so lucky.

of unfortunate events for television writers and actors. In the

following week, NBC cancelled
both Bad Judge and A to Z. Bad
Judge told the story of Judge Rebecca Wright (Kate Walsh, Greys
Anatomy), a reckless, party loving
judge who, the show hints, will be
tamed by a young boy whose parents she put behind bars.
As heartwarming as the plot
may seem, the shows poor ratings proves what many Shonda
Rhimes fans thought impossible,
that Kate Walsh can, in fact, do
wrong.
In November, both ABCs Selfie and Foxs Utopia were also cancelled. Selfie had the lowest rat-

ings of any show this Fall, just 4.7

million viewers including DVR
playbacks. This rom-com sitcom
followed the life of Eliza Dooley
(Karen Gillan, Doctor Who) as
she attempted to achieve fame
through social media. The show
was based on a George Bernard
Shaw play, Pygmalion, which also
inspired My Fair Lady. Though to
say Selfie is on the same level as My
Fair Lady is like saying Paris Hilton is equivalent to Paris, France
-- its just not true.
Utopia was a hysterically terrible reality TV show that followed
15 people, or pioneers, as they
attempted to create a new society. Originally, the pioneers were

meant to be filmed in an isolated

society 24 hours a day for an entire
year. The social experiment lasted
less than two months, which to
the credit of the pioneers, is exponentially longer than I lasted just
watching the show.
The best way to sum up the
quality of the show, however, is to
note that it will be replaced by reruns of Master Chef Junior.
NEW SHOWS TO WATCH
Dont despair yet! There is
some good news in the land of
television. In true Shonda Rhimes
style, How to Get Away With Murder is an instantly gripping drama. Reminiscent of a dark Legally

Blonde, the legal drama follows

law professor Annalise Keating
(Viola Davis, The Help) as she gets
entangled in a wildly complicated
murder plot. The only downside
to How to Get Away with Murder, though, is the murder probably wont be solved for seasons to
come.
Also new this fall is The Mysteries of Laura, which admittedly at
first seems like just another police
drama. But, what this show lacks
in a creative storyline, it more
than makes up for in its cast. Debra Messing (Will and Grace) stars
as Detective Laura Diamond, a
NYPD homicide detective struggling to balance her fast paced career, rambunctious twin boys and
soon to be ex-husband/boss. The
ratings prove that The Mysteries of
Laura is a show to watch. In fact,
it is NBCs best rated premiere in
over a year.
Perhaps the best new show on
television right now, though, is
Madame Secretary. This political
drama is definitely more reminiscent of The West Wing than House
of Cards, but it still manages to
capture the home life of Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord
(Tea Leoni, Jurassic Park III). This
balance helps Madame Secretary
stand out as a more believable, but
still interesting, version of Scandal.
Overall, the first few weeks of
television were, admittedly, poor
quality. Boring, overdone or badly
written shows were filling up airtime and there seemed to be no
hope in sight. Unlike other years,
networks made few mistakes in
the shows they cancelled (ahem,
Freaks and Geeks). The shows left
on the air today are certainly
more intriguing, more believable
and down right more enjoyable to
watch. Anyone who gives the remaining shows a chance will surely be able to find a new favorite.

Majoras Mask unveiled

PATRICK BLACK

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
On Nov. 5, Nintendo held a
Nintendo Direct, a digital press
conference, for their video game
lineup in 2015. Most of the games
were previously revealed at the
Electronic Entertainment Expo
(E3) last June and only updates
and new features were revealed.
However, there was one brand
new game revealed, The Legend of
Zelda: Majoras Mask 3D for the
Nintendo 3DS.
Following the reveal, the internet exploded with praise and
excitement over their accomplishment. Nintendo stated that they
have been working on the remake
right after the release of Ocarina
of Time 3D, but did not want to
tell the public until they had a
polished final product. They also
said that the game would include
more features, to the delight of
many fans.
To understand the magnitude
of the situation, one must start at
the release of The Legend of Zelda:
Ocarina of Time 3D in 2011. Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64
is often praised as one the most influential games of all time. When
it was remade for the 3DS, fans
were ecstatic. However, they also
wanted more. They wanted a remake of Ocarina of Times sequel,
Majoras Mask, which is considered by many as the best Legend
of Zelda game of all time, due its
dark tone and atmosphere. Many
people said that a remake would
be easy since Majoras Mask used
the same exact game engine as
Ocarina and that the original Majoras Mask was released about two
years after Ocarina.
That being said, Nintendo did
not announce any plans to remake Majoras Mask for the 3DS.
In response, fans created an online petition dubbed Operation

The classic game franchise, Legend of Zelda, continues to expand with the reveal of the revamped version of Majoras Mask.

remake (Moonfall refers to the
premise of the game where the
moon will fall and destroy the
world). After a few days the petition gained 10,000 signatures, but
still Nintendo did not announce
anything. As the months went on,
many more fans started expressing their support through videos
or fan-created remakes of Majoras
Mask itself, but Nintendo still said
nothing.
That is until a year ago with
the release of The Legend of Zelda:
A Link Between Worlds. In the
game, there was an Easter egg

referencing Majoras Mask. A few

months later, Masahiro Sakurai,
the developer for Super Smash
Bros. for Wii U, revealed that
Skull Kid, the main antagonist of
Majoras Mask, would appear in
the new Super Smash Bros. game
as an assist character. Even more
hints at Majoras Masks reveal
continued to appear over the following months, including Zelda
Williams appearing on stage at E3
with a Majoras Mask replica. Ultimately, these hints culminated
to the reveal of the long-awaited
game last week, much to the relief
of fans of the franchise.

Hymn for the Lost and the Living, were nothing special, but
were performed admirably and
warranted polite applause.
Before the third piece, though,
Conductor Diden turned and addressed the audience. He told the
listeners that Steve Bryants five
part Ecstatic Waters would be
unlike any typical piece a symphonic band would play.
The piece started off as a normal venture, but soon asserted its
uniqueness in the form of two instruments. The percussion section
played, among their usual instruments, water-filled wine glasses,
and Robert Basilio, a Music Technology major, was credited in the
program for playing Electronics/
Computer.
The digital sounds were integrated so well into the final piece
that it was occasionally difficult
to tell where the instruments left
off and the computer began. It
augmented rather than overshadowed the music. Once the mesmerizing Ecstatic Waters was
played through, the audience gave
a standing ovation.
The conductor then attempted
to leave the stage, but remembered
suddenly that there was, in fact,
one more song to perform. He
informed the audience that, Its
the exact opposite of what we just
played. He was correct.
A Slavic Farewell is an old
military piece featuring none
of Basilios computer generated
sounds. This final song was a bit of
a letdown after the novel Ecstatic
Waters performance but was fortunately not long enough to ruin
the event. The Symphonic Band
received another standing ovation,
and the audience seemed slightly
reluctant to leave, as though hoping for more. Most stayed for the
small reception afterwards where
they congratulated the band
members and generally reveled
in remembering the performance
they had just witnessed.

The problem with many sci-fi

films is that they forget the human aspect of storytelling. While
the characters are not perfect, this
film employs more than enough
character development to force
the audience to sympathize with
the characters. The film also does
an outstanding job of making the
seemingly non relatable problems
the characters face into smaller
scale issues like familial relations
and self-preservation that anyone
can understand. The story inspires
multiple tear-inducing scenes in
addition to awe inspiring cinematography.
A director like Nolan is fascinated by the history of film and
also its bright future. He shows
his respect for the art of film making by allowing theaters who still
own non digital film projectors to
screen his film two days early.
The contrast of a futuristic film
with the whir of an old fashioned
projector in the background is one
that cannot be felt in any other
recently released, big-name film.
The idea of showing the movie
on film pays homage to the human
spirit of innovation that is present
in the film as well as society today.
Interstellar takes place in a world
where humanity has lost its desire
to innovate and as a result, faces
its ultimate demise by the planet
that has supported it.
It is evident that Christopher
Nolan tried to capture the essence of human innovation in the
film. The success of this aesthetic
choice is yet to be seen, but this
film has the rare power to inspire a
new generation of innovators and
explorers for the ultimate growth
of society.
This film is by no means perfect, but that is not what makes it
so special. Make sure to see this
film as it is sure to become an instant sci-fi classic. In twenty years
people will be bragging about how
they were able to see Interstellar in
theaters.

Tribe pleased with performance at CCC

Photo by Tyler Meuter Student Publications

Fourth year Physics and EE major Patrick Panuski throws a flick during ultimate practice this
season. Panuski leads Tribe with 24 scores as well as leading the team with 11 Ds on the year.

MARK RUSSELL
SPORTS EDITOR

This past weekend, Tribe,

Techs mens ultimate team,
competed in Classic City Classic
(CCC) in Athens, Georgia.
The tournament was hosted by
UGAs ultimate team and is one
of the premier tournaments in the
country, featuring seven teams
that went to college nationals this
past season.

Tribe was seeded 13th for the

tournament and was placed in a
pool with Dartmouth and Central Florida who both participated
in nationals last year. Tribes first
game was against UCF, and they
won 8-7 on universe point, upsetting the number five seed at the
tournament.
Tribes first three games were
won on universe point including a
10-9 victory over the fourth seed,
Dartmouth. At 3-0, it put Tribe

into the drivers seat going into the

pool, which they ultimately won.
They finished 4-1 on the day, beating Auburn 11-8 to clinch pool D.
One of our biggest goals
was to break seed. [We] came in
ranked 13th and wanted to prove
ourselves against some of the biggest teams and play them at their
level, and we accomplished that,
said grad student captain John
Dugan.
The following day, Tribe

moved onto the winners bracket

where they lost a 15-14 game
against Michigan who finished
fifth last year at Nationals and
lost the following game to UNC
15-11, who were national runner
ups. Tribe won the 7th place game
against Auburn 9-6.
CCC, being one of the top
tournaments in the fall, gave Tribe
a great chance to test themselves
against some of the best competition in the country. It presented
more of a challenge than Tribes
first tournament of the year, Itchfest, which they won without losing a game.
College ultimate allows five
years of eligibility, which means
that graduate students are very
common in college ultimate.
Tribe has always had several key
graduate students, and this year,
Nathan White and Andreas Gabrielsen have joined the program.
White is from UC Davis, and
Gabrielsen was a captain at Rowan University.
White, who led the team with
25 assists and scored 11 times,
has had a major role on this years
team, and his versatility allows
him to play every position. Dugan
praised the two new players saying
that their experience will help the
team succeed next spring.
Tribe also returned many key
players from last years team including fourth year captains Devon Rogers and Stephen Burkot as
well as fourth years David Egbert
and Patrick Panuski.
Rogers and Panuski tied for

the lead in scoring at CCC with

13 scores each.
The team is hoping their experiences at CCC will help them
this spring.
I do feel like our performance
at CCC will be positive momentum going into next spring because we performed much better
than most other teams were expecting, and we proved that there
werent any teams there that were
significantly better than us, said
second year EE Michael Tillitson.
Tillitson, who was a former
high school basketball star, is
6-foot-7. His height and athletic
ability make him a very tough
matchup for opposing teams, and
being only a second year, he has
great potential at Tech.
I feel I played well but still
need to further improve my
throws and defensive footwork,
Tillitson said.
Dugan believes that the identity of the team has changed since
hes been at Tech. In previous years
with former stars Nick Lance and
Jay Clark, the team was very reliant on them and their ability to
out-athlete their opponents. Dugan thinks that the team is more
well-rounded than in the past and
isnt reliant on one player to have a
part in every play.
Like Dugan, Tillitson is excited for the spring season as both
are confident that Tribe will have
a great shot to make Nationals
next May.
Tribe is currently ranked #21
in the country by USA Ultimate.

JACKETS

// SPORTS

This weekend, the Jackets are in action against

ACC-foe Clemson. The Tigers are making their
first trip back to the Flats since getting upset by the
Jackets back in 2011. That win remains
one of Techs biggest wins in recent memory, and the Jackets
look to continue the home winning streak against the Tigers.
Tech is coming off a three
game winning streak are looking
to keep that momentum as they
play their last ACC game of the
season.
The Jackets are going to need
help in the coming weeks if they are
to make the ACC championship
game, needing Duke to lose
their final two ACC games.
The Jackets have been
clicking on all cylinders

The wide re
ceiving duo
Mike Williams and Artavis Scott have led the
Clemson offense all season. The two have combined for nearly 1400 receiving yards and nine
touchdowns. The Tigers are going to need these
two on their A game if they want to leave Atlanta
with the win.
The Tigers have a very well-balanced attack,

three games.
The Jackets as a whole have averaged an astounding 49 points during this recent win streak.
Not to be outdone, the defense has done their
part. The defense has given up only an average of
20 points per game in the past three games.
Tech is ranked in the top ten in the nation
in offensive efficiency. But they will be going up
against a team in the Clemson Tigers that ranks in
the top ten in defensive efficiency.
Somethings got to give. If the Jackets are to
continue with their winning ways, they are going
to need to control the time of possession.
The longer they can keep this solid Clemson Tigers defense on the field and wear them down, the
better.
That means the defense is going to need continue what they have been doing in creating
turnovers for the Jackets to have a chance at
victory this weekend.

running the ball just a

little more than they
throw. Running back
Wayne Gallman has
been the work horse for
the running game recently, getting about a fourth of
the carries for the team.
Freshman running back Adam Choice, who
was the teams leading rusher, suffered a seasonending injury earlier this season. The Tigers are
going to be sure to go to a multi-back strategy
quite a bit during the game.
Clemson comes into the game with the second rated overall defense in the nation. The team
ranks fourth in the nation in rush yards allowed
(giving up a mere 90.9 a game). However, their
run defense is going to be tested when facing the
triple option attack of the Jackets.

TIGERS

Clemson enters the game

vs Tech as one of the hottest teams in the ACC. The
Tigers have won six straight
games with their last loss
coming against Florida State
back on September 20th.
This Clemson team is one that is much different than teams in recent years. The Tigers are
used to having those big play guys like Sammy
Watkins or C.J. Spiller. No player has emerged as
that big play threat.
The Tigers have won the last two meetings
with Tech, averaging 51 points per game in those
games. Quarterbacks Cole Stoudt and Deshaun
Watson have shared playing time throughout the
season. Watson, who will start versus Tech, leads
the team in touchdowns, with nine through the
air and three on the ground.

the past few weeks. The offense has been absolutely

career, even coaching his middle

school football team together.
Paula is responsible for her sons
unique first and middle names:
Synjyn came from her favorite
volleyball player (Sinjin Smith)
while Skky was chosen because
the sky is the limit for her son.
He spent the entire offseason
working with both parents, never
missing a workout while training
twice a day for six to seven days
a week.
The hard work has paid off,
as the Marietta, GA, natives 157
yards against N.C. State earned
Days ACC Offensive Back of the
Week honors and a feature article on ESPN.com.
In addition to Days award,
senior offensive lineman Shaq
Mason collected his third ACC
Offensive Lineman of the Week
while senior linebacker Quayshawn Nealy was named ACC
Linebacker of the Week for the
third time.
Days is also now the only player in the Paul Johnson era to have
a rushing touchdown as a quarterback, A-back, and B-back.
Following in his parents footsteps, Days has become somewhat
of a coach himself. His experience
at the three main triple option
positions allows him to see things
that other players might not see.
I can see when someone messes up, then Im able to correct him
without the coach having to say
anything, explains Days. Im
able to coach [starting quarterback] Justin [Thomas], Zach [Laskey], and the A-backs after playing all 3 positions.

Redshirt senior breaks a big run against NC State last weekend. Days led the team with 157
yards on 19 carries. It was the third straight game where Days set a new career high in rushing.

Even when he doesnt get the

ball or gets tackled, Days says he is
able to look around and tell other
players how to improve their own
blocking.
Another advantage arising
from playing multiple positions
is Days ability to anticipate what
his teammates will do.
Sometimes I get the ball, and

I see a defender coming towards

me, but I know that an A-back or
lineman will get him, so I make
a cut. That guy ends up getting
blocked, and I end up breaking a
big run, Days said.
Blocking has been a huge improvement over last year, according to Days, with offensive linemen, running backs and wide

receivers alike making great interior and perimeter blocks.

He remembers first seeing current offensive line starters Bryan
Chamberlain and Freddie Burden
as freshmen and wondering how
they would turn out.
After seeing them play so well
this season, Days loves to praise
how far they have come since last

season.
Its great to see them mature,
learn the offense and see their
hard work finally pay off, Days
said.
After football season, Days
plans to finish up his classes in the
spring and apply to dental school
thereafter. But first, the Yellow
Jackets have two huge rivalry
games in front of them: Clemson
at home and UGA in Athens in
the final regular season game of
Days career.
With Laskey and top A-back
Charles Perkins set to return
against Clemson, Days will likely
see his carries diminish but is sure
play a vital role nonetheless.
When asked if he might add to
his offensive arsenal by kicking an
extra point in his final game, Days
laughed and said that he doubted
that Coach Johnson would let
him do that.
It would be funny though,
Days admitted, Ive kicked with
[kicker] Harrison [Butker] before,
but I cant kick it like him. I toe
the ball, so who knows where that
ball would end up.
Even though he (probably)
wont get to kick or play any more
snaps at quarterback, Days is very
much looking forward to facing
the Tigers on his Senior Day.
Clemsons defense ranks second in the nation in yards allowed
and fourth in rushing yards allowed, so Days rushing prowess
will be much needed if the Jackets
want to reach nine wins for the
first time since 2009.
Tech kicks off against the
Clemson Tigers in their final
home game of the year on Saturday at noon on ESPN.

Coach Collier building for future success

CHRISTINA WELLS

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Photo courtest of GTAA

First year Tech volleyball head coach, Michelle Collier, gives a

thumbs up in a match earlier this year. Tech is 4-9 in ACC play.

First year Tech volleyball head

coach Michelle Collier has been
immersed in the world of volleyball since the day she was born.
I grew up playing in Brazil
which is one of the biggest countries in the world regarding volleyball, Collier said.
Collier joins Tech from Jacksonville University where she
guided JU to the 2013 Atlantic
Sun regular season and conference
championships. JU finished with
a 30-4 record on the year. Collier
was also 2013 Atlantic Sun Coach
of the Year.
She was surrounded by volleyball and inevitably developed a
great understanding and deep love
for the game. Collier attended
University of South Florida and
is praised as one of the best college volleyball players in history,
ranking 5th in NCAA Division I
history.
However, she did not stop
there. Collier also played professional volleyball at an international level for four years, during
which she was exposed to unique
coaching styles that she says contributed to her own coaching
style. Because of her time as a volleyball player, she is more adaptable to different people, enabling
her to get the best out of her players which is essential when there
are constant changes to team
dynamics as players come in and

out. And now, Collier is fearlessly

leading the volleyball program
here at Georgia Tech.
Currently Tech is 11-15 with
a conference record of 4-9. The
team has battled throughout the
regular season and has had struggles on the road where they have a
2-8 record.
However, the team is quite
young with only one senior,
Courtney Felinski, getting major
playing time. The majority of the
teams key players are freshmen
and sophomores, including sophomore twins Teegan and Annika
Van Gunst who are first and second in kills respectively. With not
many veteran players on the team,
there are obstacles to overcome.
Collier knows that she needs to
keep the girls focused while working on building their confidence
and consistency. She is confident
that the team will continue to
grow and mature together as the
season progresses.
We have really good people
around us. The girls work hard
and push themselves, and theres
a lot of kindhearted people, Collier said.
Collier believes it is important
to have a good relationship with
the players on and off the court.
Being honest and fair but also
pushing the girls are important aspects when it comes to coaching.
You really have to earn trust
from your players and be approachable and make sure theyre
comfortable around you, Collier

explained.
The team practices two hours a
day. Practicing ball control is important and is mastered by getting
many touches on the ball. Collier
also believes repetition is important, helping to build confidence
and skill. There is also a balance
between position-specific practice
and team practice, and weaknesses are addressed and improved
upon in preparation of games.
I truly believe that if you take
care of the easier part of the game
then the harder part becomes easier. I like to teach the game overall,
but I focus on the fundamentals a
lot, Collier said.
With Collier at the helm, great
things can be expected from Tech
volleyball in the future. Collier
herself has great expectations for
Tech volleyball.
I have always wanted an opportunity to coach at a place
where I could be one of the top
teams in the country, and I think
we can be that at Georgia Tech,
Collier said.
Collier is confident in her
coaching abilities and her goals
for Techs volleyball future. The
process will be easier with the
bulk of Techs current volleyball
squad returning next season.
I think our main focus is playing exciting volleyball and getting
better as a team and bringing us
back to the top of the ACC and
hopefully top 25 in the country.
We have everything in place to
have that happen, Collier said.

Women's
GUARDS
The three returning guards
were all an important part of the
lady Jackets season last year. They
will be working to fill a big gap
in the offense, as Ty Marshalls
graduation after a storied career at
Tech will result in a big change in
the roster.
Sophomore Kaela Davis is
coming off of an outstanding
freshman season in which she
averaged 18.6 points per game,
made 85 total three-pointers and
was named to the 2014 All-ACC
Freshman Team. The Jackets will
greatly benefit if Davis can build
upon that success.
Senior Sydney Wallace will
finish off her Tech career after

posting a solid 9.8 points per

game and making 49 three-pointers last year. Wallace has 142 career three-pointers, putting her in
sixth all-time for the Jackets.
Junior Aaliyah Whiteside was
fourth on the team in scoring with
7.8 points per game last season.
This was a dip from her freshman
year total, but she established herself as a key rebounder and was
third on the team with 170 total
rebounds.
Joining the veteran guards are
incoming freshman guards Imani
Tilford and Antonia Peresson.
Tilford joins the Jackets from
Woodlands High School in New
York. She became Woodlands alltime leading scorer in her senior

season and was ranked 17th nationally by ELITE Prospect at the

point position for the 2014 class.
Peresson comes to Tech from
Italy, fresh off of a bronze medal
win with Italy in the 2014 U20
European Championship this
summer. She was ranked the
number 81 overall recruit by the
Collegiate Girls Basketball.
FORWARDS
Entering the 2014-2015 season, the forwards/centers will
be headlined by juniors Aaliyah
Whiteside, Roddreka Rogers and
Nariah Taylor. The lady Jackets
forward line, returning their three
most experienced players, will be
expected to see further successes

this season.
Also back for her second year
is sophomore Katarina Vuckovic
who is from Smederevo, Serbia.
Freshman center Simina
Avram joins the team from Romania, and center Erin Garner is
from Philadelphia. Both players
stand at 6-foot-3 and should provide good height and depth this
season.
The starting center last season
was Shayla Bivins who graduated
last year. Despite being the starting center, Bivins only played 14
minutes per game.
Taylor is the most likely candidate to start at center and averaged
6.2 points per game
and 3.3 rebounds last

teammates.
Redshirt freshman Travis Jorgenson missed all but four games
of his freshman year last season
due to a torn ACL but has since
recovered from surgery and is
ready to return to action. Coaches
praise him for his high basketball
intellect and his play making ability. Jorgenson will most likely be
starting point guard this season.
Sophomore Josh Heath transferred here from South Florida
over the offseason and was granted immediate eligibility by the
NCAA.

in rebounds with 142.

Cox graduated from Ole Miss
this past summer and will play
his final year of eligibility at Tech
this season. He averaged over 30
games of action in his three full
seasons at Old Miss and is the
most experienced center on the
roster.
Sampson transferred from East
Carolina University in 2013 after
three seasons there and sat out all
of last season. He was a solid rebounder in his time at ECU, and
will be relied upon to continue
that trend to make up for the loss
of Carter Jr. and Miller.
Mitchell was granted a waiver
after his transfer from Maryland
this year and is eligible for his junior year this season. He played
in over 70 games in his two seasons at Maryland, and he too is a
strong rebounder.
Also returning from last year
is sophomore Quinton Stephens,
Stephens was frequently used off
of the bench last season and was
especially a threat from behind
the arc.
In addition to the returning
forwards and transfers come two
new freshmen. Ben Lammers is
a 610 center who, as the tallest
player on the roster, may be called

upon to
emulate
some of Millers strengths.
Abdoulaye Gueye, originally from
Senegal, is a 69 forward with a wingspan
of over seven feet.
The big changes to
the forward core this
season are bound to
have a big effect on the
team. However, the addition of experienced
transfer students should
help alleviate some of
those concerns, as should
the incoming freshmen.
Georges-Hunt will be a
key part of Techs offense
and success this season,
and an expanded role could
lead to improved numbers
from an already important forward.

season. Rodgers started 30 games

last season at power forward, averaging 6 points and 6.5 rebounds
per game. Rodgers stands at six
feet tall and is one of the best rebounders on the team.
One of the more versatile players on the team is Whiteside who
started five games last year. She
was the top scoring threat off the
bench averaging 7.8 points and
5.3 rebounds per game.
The lady Jackets were 20-12 last
season and lost in the first round
of the NCAA tournament. They
hope to get back to the big dance
again. It will be tough replacing
Marshall at point guard, but Davis and the rest of the team could
make this year special.

men's
GUARDS
The departure of Trae Golden
this offseason is a tough loss for
the Jackets, but a fresh mix of new
players could propel this team to
perform above expectations.
True freshman Tadric Jackson is one of the most promising
players on the team. He was also
named all-class Player of the Year
in Georgia last year, all while he
led his team to winning the 6A
state championship.
Expect him to assume a regular starting role, possibly immediately as the season starts.
Junior Chris Bolden returns
as a potential starter after a down
year last season. He shot 29.8 percent from the floor, down from
the 36.3 percent he shot the previous year, and scored 5.4 points
per game. He actually shot better
from the three point range, making 32 of his 105 attempts for a
