HOW ABOUT THOSE
BUCKEYES!!! O H _ _
The Recognition Dinner was
January 10th and I must
say was it was a wonderful
event. Jim and Bev Syrowski along with their committee did an awesome job
putting on an outstanding
Prime Rib dinner. The night
was filled with many thanks
to members that served our
club last year along with
bestowing our three prestigious awards and we had
some fun too. Attendance
was in the mid 80s with 20
Past Commodores in attendance! Now for the
awards; the Oliver True
Award for outstanding ser-

Jack Clawson. Jacks sup-

port of the Jr. Sail fleet

over the past few years
has been much appreciated. Thanks Jack! And finally the George Shade
Memorial went to Jayson
(JJ) Miller. JJ is a very

dedicated young sailor who

takes his sport very serious
and is always striving to
get better. Congratulations
to all the winners this year!
vice went to PC Mike Nitz.
Mike has been serving our
club for many years in
many different capacities
and is well deserving of this
award. Be sure to congratulate Mike when you
see him next. The Shark

member that is also a dock
holder is not protected and
their dock can be reassigned by the dockage
chairman. There are currently 20 boats on the
waiting list.

very unique items for the

The Rear Perspective

With low temperatures and
snow it is hard to get excited
about boating and swimming
pools. But the various committees, staff, board, and flag
are all busy making sure the
facility is in good shape for
the 2015 season. My thanks
to the many members who
volunteer their time so readily
and the staff, all who make
my role as rear commodore
look easy. I am pleased to
say the Planning Committee,
under the leadership of PC
John Bolte, will take an active
role in two major club projects, the swimming pool project and the building project. In addition to Chairman
PC John Bolte, the Planning
Committee is comprised of PC
John Kocher, PC Todd Finke,
PC Todd Bickley, PC Doug
Young, and myself as rear
commodore. Using their many
years of experience and their
contacts with the membership,
the board wants to be sure
the correct option is picked
for the benefit of the entire
membership. It was decided
at the first Planning committee
meeting that the pool project
would be co-chaired by PC
John Bolte and myself. John
has been evaluating the op-

tions given by the various contractors and developing more

defined scopes of the various
options to send out to start
securing better pricing. I am
also excited that fellow member Ron Zwierlein will be providing guidance to the committee as Ron was in the pool
business for many years and
even participated in the design of swimming pools for the
Olympics held in Athens,
Greece. Some of you may
not be old enough to remember the Olympics in Athens. Once we get closer to a
firm pricing on the various options from a minimal repair to
a brand new relocated pool,
the planning committee will
conduct meetings with the
membership to assure we take
to vote the option that YOU
want. The Building Committee
will be co-chaired by PC
Doug Young and myself, and
we are evaluating the best
method to move forward. This
project admittedly fell behind
with the needs of the pool.
We need to keep moving forward to determine options
from doing nothing to a major
remodel. I again want to say
it is the committees and
boards job to evaluate the

options for all the major work,

present the options to you,
and in the end, YOU decide
what projects are done for
YOUR club. I won't bore you
with all the minor stuff being
done around the club under
the leadership of PC Chuck
and Eric, but you will notice
differences in the lighting,
restrooms, garage, internet,
and other areas as they are
complete. We meet weekly in
person or by phone so please
feel free to pass along your
suggestions to me directly,
Chuck, or Eric. My e-mail
is dobergefell@gmail.com
and my cell number is
312.961.6522. Stay warm, I
am confident summer will
come again!!!

Fleet Captain of Power

As I am writing this we are less than 90 days away from the Put-in-Bay Ice-Breaker. Time to start getting the
boats back into shape. To this point the winter has not been that bad and will hopefully lead into a very nice
spring. The finishing touches are being put together for the 2015 Cruise-Out schedule. I am just waiting to hear
back from a few more marinas to confirm dates. When the schedule is completed, an email will be sent out so
that you can start planning your 2015 PCYC cruise schedule. Please contact me with any questions.
Happy boating,
RJ Basil, FCOP

Fleet Captain of Sail

Greetings to all PCYC Members. As I
write this we are still in Florida winding up our Winter Sailing Tour! We
arrived in Florida before Thanksgiving
and have completed a number of regattas from Tampa to Miami. While in
Florida I received word that JJ had
been awarded the George Schade
Memorial Trophy for Junior Sailor of
the Year. Without letting him know we
returned to Port Clinton for the Recognition Dinner January 11, 2015. What
a surprise for JJ. The following Monday JJ and I flew back to Florida to
compete in the Ft. Lauderdale to Key
West Race.

light northeast winds which built to 2025 knots close to the wind. Most of the
top yachts managed to carry spinnakers all the way to the Key West Sea
Buoy then beating in light to medium
winds to the finish inside Key West. It
was a joy to compete in this race
again, especially with my Grandson
JJ.

The Shark Perpetual Trophy given for

outstanding service to the sailing fleet
was awarded to Jack Clawson. Jack
has made substantial contributions to
the sail fleet with his assistance on the
race course. What a great accomplishment by both Jack and JJ!

I have completed most of these races

starting in 1976. For many of those
years I sailed my Beneteau 38 Sea
Turtle winning the event overall in
2004 and 2006. In 2008 we did our
last race on Sea Turtle with Rob and
Kevin Kyle taking 2nd in the IRC Class.
I am happy to report Bad Fish the
Melges 32 from North Cape Yacht
Club took overall awards this year.
Holy Toledo the Hobie 32 also competed placing 1st in PHRF Class C.
Nice job by both of these I-LYA
yachts.

The Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race

started January 14. JJ and I were
fortunate to have been invited to sail
on a J 120 on this popular race. Although JJ has sailed across the Gulfstream on trips to the Bahamas this
was his first competitive offshore race.
The race started off Ft. Lauderdale in

The 2015 sailing season is well along

in preparation. The I-LYA Travelers
Series dates have now been set and
we have locked down our primary
coaches Ian Kyle and Amber Waite.
Additionally we will have specialty
coaches for our race team. Matt
Wenzinger is well on his way in lining

up the Learn to Sail sessions. Look forward to further information as the

year progresses.
We have had terrific response from
our Sail Fleet Members. If you have
not renewed your Fleet Dues there is
still time!
There will be an I-LYA Junior Meeting
at Sandusky Sailing Club on February
7 to discuss the upcoming Junior Sailing season. The Travelers Series race
at PCYC has been set for July 17.
Cliff Ruckstuhl our Auxiliary Sail Chair
is busy arranging workshops for our
members. February 28 is a Safety at
Sea Seminar and March 21 is our
North U Seminar for racing sailors.
February 20 is our first Junior Sail
Fundraiser on Friday Night.
Spring cant come too soon!
