Shipsboilersteamsupplyforaccommodationanddeckequipmentmustbereducedinpressurebeforeuse.Itisthen
usedintheaccommodationforheatingand,bythegalleyforsteamcleaningworktops/cookingutensils.Steamis
alsosuppliedtothedecktodrivewinchesandanchorwindlasses.
WhenIwasayoungengineeratseaservingonoiltankersthemateonthebridgewouldphonedowntotheengine
roomandrequeststeamondeck.Thiswasusedtodrivethecablewinches,anchorwindlasssteamengine,and
supplytheButterworthPumpwhentankcleaning.
Steamisalsosuppliedtotheaccommodationforheatingandgalleyuseinbothcasesunderreducedtemperature
andpressure.
Nowadays,steamisstillsuppliedtheaccommodationandgalley,butwindlassesandwinchesarenormallyelectricor
hydraulicallydriven,dependingonthetypeofvessel.
Thefollowingsectionsexaminetheuseofsteambeginningwithanoverviewofitssupplyandreturnsystem.

SteamSupplyandReturnOverview.
Shipsboilersoperateathighpressureandtemperatures,oftensupplyingsuperheatedsteamtothemainengines.
Thereforethesteampressurehastobedecreasedandthisisachievedbypassingitthroughanumberofpressure
reducingvalvesanddesuperheatingifrequired.Thedesuperheaterisapressurevesselwherecondensateis
sprayedintothesuperheatedsteamflowingthroughit,convertingthesuperheatedsteamtosaturatedsteam.Thede
superheaterislocatedintheshipsboilerroom.
Whensteamisrequiredondeckthedrainsonthesteamdrivencomponentsandsupplypipingondeckareopened
andallsteamtrapscheckedtobeoperatingcorrectly.Onlythenisthesteamtodeckisolatingvalveintheengineroom
veryslowlyopened.Thisisparticularlyimportantafterthesystemhasbeenshutdownduringalongseavoyageand
willpreventdamagetothepipesandflangegasketsduetorapidthermalexpansionandwaterhammer.

Steamissuppliedtothegalleyforcookingandhotwater
andalsosuppliedtoandaheatexchangerforthe
accommodation.
Asteamhotwatercalorifierintheengineroomprovides
domestichotwatertotheaccommodation.
Thesteamfromthesecomponentsandfunctionsis
returnedthroughpipingbacktheengineroomauxiliary
steamcondenser.Thisiscooledbyseawaterandthe
resultantcondensatereturnedtotheboilerfeedsystem.
Thiscondensatefromtheauxiliarycondenserisregularly
testedforoxygenandacidscontent,andanonline
salinometerisnormallyfittedwhichdumpsthe
condensateifthesaltppmistoohigh.Thesefeedwater
contaminateswouldcorrodetheinsidesoftheboiler

watertubesifallowedtoentertheboilerwatersystem.Asketchofanauxiliarycondenserisshownbelow.

SteamWindlass
Thewindlassisusedtoraiseorlowertheshipsanchorandislocatedonthefocslehead.Ithasanormalsteam
enginewhichdrivesasingleordualhorizontallymountednotchedwheelknownasgypsies.Thenotchesinthe
wheelsareforgedormouldedtosuitthechainlinkssizeandprofileexactlytoensureefficientoperationandprevent
thechainsfromjumpingoff.Thereisalsoagearboxandmanualbrakeincorporatedinthewindlassoperation.
Beforestartingthewindlassshouldbethoroughlywarmedthroughwithalltherelevantsteamdrainsopen.The
operatinghandwheelwhichadmitsthesteamtothewindlassshouldbeslowlyrotateduntilthestrainistaken,then
furtheropenedastheanchorchainisdrawninorlowered.Asketchofatwindrumsteamwindlassisshownbelow.

cabinsandalleywaysbyafanreturningtotheheatexchanger.Thetemperatureiscontrolledbyseveralinstruments,
somefittedtotheindividualcabinsorattheexchangerhotairoutlet.
