Introduction
CasingSeat is an accurate, easy-to-use tool that determines casing setting depth, and viable
casing and wellbore schemes. It provides rigorous shoe selection calculation routines to optimize
shoe locations, based on pore pressure and fracture gradients, and user-defined constraints. It
features inventory-based management of permissible hole and casing size combinations.
CasingSeat provides layer- and lithology-based characterization of subsurface boundary
conditions and operating constraints, including those associated with wellbore stability, minimum
overbalance, and differential sticking.
CasingSeat provides preliminary design for oil wells consisting of:

Casing and hole sizes

Setting depths for the casings

Highest allowable cement tops

Mud schedules

CasingSeat is fully integrated with StressCheck to provide a convenient path to detailed design and
stress analysis of the well completion. With CasingSeat, sensitivity of the design-to-field variations
can be easily evaluated. This helps you anticipate and avoid costly complications while drilling and
completing the well.
Casing seats are determined for every possible combination of hole size and casing size in the
ranges you specify. CasingSeat provides two design criteria to help select the best candidates from
the list of possible solutions: the cost of casing and the cost of hole. These criteria can be used
independently or together to rank the casing designs produced by CasingSeat. For example, if the
cost of hole criterion is selected, the design is ranked from minimum hole size to largest hole sizes.
If the cost of hole is set negative, then the ranking is in reverse order. The relative importance of
hole cost and casing cost can be adjusted by varying the relative costs of each. This option is not
intended to produce an actual cost of the well completion, but only relative costs for ranking
purposes.
This document contains important information and last minute changes related to CasingSeat
R2003.16.0 that is not documented elsewhere. CasingSeat is an application in the Engineers
Desktop (EDT) 2003.16.0 release, which provides major new functionality in support of the
Drilling & Completions applications on the shared EDM data model.

Installation
For details, refer to the Installation section of the Engineers Desktop R2003.16.0 Drilling
Summary Level Release Notes.
IMPORTANT:
Engineers Desktop 2003.16.0 is a new product. If you are currently using a pre-2003.14.0 EDM database, you
must upgrade your EDM database to 2003.14.0 or 2003.14.1.0 prior to upgrading to the 2003.16.0 release. Once
the database has been upgraded to 2003.16, you will no longer be able to access it using the 2003.14 EDT
applications.
If you intend to run both 2003.14 and 2003.16 EDT applications, make a copy of your 2003.14 EDM database,
and upgrade the copy to 2003.16. That way you can access your original 2003.14 database with the 2003.14 EDT
applications, and the 2003.16 EDM database with the 2003.16 EDT applications.
Install 2003.16.0 in a different directory than the previous release. After installing EDT 2003.16.0, upgrade your
existing EDM 2003.14.0 or 2003.14.1.0 database to 2003.16.0.
Refer to the Installation section of the Engineers Desktop R2003.16.0 Drilling Summary Level Release Notes
for details.

Database Upgrade (MSDE and Oracle)

Refer to the Installation section of the R2003.16.0 Drilling Summary Level Release Notes for
information on upgrading your EDM database from 2003.14.0 or 2003.14.1 to the 2003.16.0
version.
You must upgrade your existing EDM database(s) BEFORE using
R2003.16.
You must upgrade versions of your database(s) created with earlier versions of the
software before running the R2003.16 software.

Enhancements and New Functionality

CasingSeat has added the following enhancements for the 2003.16.0 release:

Store Templates in Database Instead of Files

Templates are now opened from and stored in the EDM database in two modes, user and system
templates, rather than as flat files only (seen in earlier releases). CasingSeat also has the ability to
open templates from file (*.pdt), as in previous releases.

Casing and Hole Size Selector Graphical User Interface

The Casing and Hole Size Selector enhances the design workflow for specifying allowable hole
sizes and casing ODs. This feature is a graphical representation of allowable hole and casing sizes,
and is accessed via the Well menu. Additionally, a toolbar button (
) was added to the Views
toolbar that allows you to open the interface. The Casing and Hole Size Selector allows you to
quickly specify hole sizes and casing ODs that are available for a design, rather than manually enter
the sizes via spreadsheets.
The Casing and Hole Size Selector uses combo boxes that allow you to select, delete and associate
casing and hole sizes from current inventories. The interface displays alternating colored rows of
hole and casing symbols. Holes are represented as circles, and casings as squares, each
differentiated by a specified size. The units displayed are determined by the selected Unit System.
Holes are associated to casings by a one-directional line with an arrow between symbols.

As symbols are added to the Casing and Hole Size Selector, the Allowable Hole Sizes and
Allowable Casing ODs spreadsheets are updated.

Defects Fixed from Previous Releases

With this release, several known problems were fixed. For a complete list of defects fixed in this
release, see Fixed Problems on page 11.

Common Well Explorer Enhancements

Well Explorer filtering capability, and the ability to save filters. Includes CTRL-F search,
advanced Search, filter drop-down menu, and display of a filter funnel icon over an EDM
database node when the filter is selected.

Design/Case audit now includes Change History (this feature is not in OpenWells, but
OpenWells does populate Create and Delete activity for Wellbores)

Common Rig, Sidetrack, etc. visualization in a Well Configuration panel; this includes a datum
diagram and a sidetrack diagram (latter not in OpenWells). Capable of displaying negative
MSL elevation

F7 and Ctrl+F7 Data Dictionary command added to Well Explorer Properties dialogs.

Expanded transfer file extensions that now differentiate into specific categories. For example,
rig transfer files are *.rig.xml. All applications can read historical data and therefore are
backwards compatible to 2003.5.

Able to link local and network folders as attachments.

Other Integration Enhancements

Appearance of common status bar elements standardized to be consistent with all applications

Security tokens for Tubular Properties and Catalogs added

Lessons Learned, already in OpenWells, added to CasingSeat at the Well and Design levels.
Lessons are saved in the EDM database CD_LESSONS_LEARNED table and are useful
inputs to company Knowledge Management systems.

Rig Sharing, already in OpenWells, added to CasingSeat. If a user copies a rig and moves it to
another design the air gap (datum) is honored. Rig Sharing includes:
Rig Editor
Rig Export
Rig drag and drop
CO2 Hazard checkbox in Well Properties dialog
Contractor node added to the Well Explorer
Added Datum selection for rigs at the Case level
Wellbore Properties dialog has TAML added (an OpenWells field)

Fixed Problems
The following item(s) were identified as problems in the previous release and have been fixed for
the CasingSeat 2003.16.0 release.
Defect/Enhancement No.

Description

153646

Copy/Paste of spreadsheet columns can cause a crash.

701835

Drop down list selector should be disabled (grayed out) while displaying: Available
well configuration, Final well configuration, Active well schematic, active casing
scheme.

706410

CasingSeat crashes while a second user tries to reopen a Design currently open by the
first user.

721397

While working in template mode the Drilling Parameters spreadsheet does not allow
input of BHA ODs and lengths.

Known Problems
The following are known problems for the 2003.16.0 release of CasingSeat. For a comprehensive
list of known problems, go to: http://css.lgc.com/CustomerSupport/CustomerSupportHome.jsp.
Defect/Enhancement No.

Description

138142

Design will not calculate if smallest valid First Casing OD is chosen.

155298

Unable to delete cells in Drilling Parameters table. Although recently the ability to
disable insert/delete rows in this table was requested, user may need to redefine all
his entries. It will be very helpful in that case that any editable cell or cells (i.e., for
Drill Pipe OD, BHA OD, and BHA length) could be selected and deleted.

728511

Closing CasingSeat when more than one Design is openand unsaved changes
exist results in a loss of data. If two or more Designs with unsaved changes are
open and then the user closes the application, CasingSeat prompts to save only the
first opened Design. Unsaved data in other Designs is lost. Workaround: use the
recommended work practice of saving all Designs prior to closing the application.

730860

Certain special characters, such as / (forward slash), used in a Design name cause a
CasingSeat flat file (*.pdi) export failure. Temporary workarounds include: export
data in XML transfer file format; rename the Design to be exported and use no
special characters; avoid the use of special characters in Design names.

730984

Casing and Hole Size Selector is not available to add as an object in Reports.

731048

On rare occasion the Open Template dialog does not activate the template.
Workaround: Close and restart CasingSeat.

731289

System templates no longer exist after an R2003.16.0 EDM database upgrade.

Workaround: Manually restore the system templates using the EDM Administration
Utility. Refer to the EDM Administration Utility documentation for more
information.

731531

BHA lengths initially entered in Drilling parameters table in Template mode are not
displayed when revisiting the template. The initial length values are stored in the
database and shown and applied in design mode, however they are not redisplayed
while editing the template.
