The University of Trento in collaboration with REPLY (www.reply.

com) is organising a
crash course on Big Data.
The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary background,
certification and base skills on BIG Data technologies and to also acquire some inside
on the most promising use cases on Big Data.
The subscription is free, the attendance to the course will be compensated and opens
the opportunity for hiring by REPLY.
Background
Join the Big Data revolution. Data Scientist has been coined as the sexiest job of our
time and Big Data is its main ingredient. It is estimated that scientists with the Big Data
experience will be among the most wanted in companies and organisations for many
years to come. Data Science is a complex field that requires mainly a good
understanding of the Big Data technologies and how to apply them in different
application scenarios.
This course aims at training highly qualified computer scientists into the Big Data
world, allowing them to become experts that will have the ability to occupy highly
demanded positions.
About the course
Nowadays we are producing data at rates we have never seen before. Existing data
management methods fail to model, store and analyse this data since their size variety
and velocity has grown so large that advancements in the existing hardware have
been outpaced by the management requirements. New technologies techniques and
methods have been developed to cope with this issue. New software stack has been
developed to exploit parallelism on commodity hardware and many software tools
have abandoned requirements that have traditionally been considered a must. The
aim of this course is to give the participants the required knowledge related to these
technologies, and in particular, NoSQL, Map Reduce, SPARK, R, etc.
Course Duration
The course will last 11 weeks. The starting date is planned for the first week March.
Course Syllabus
The topics that will be covered and the activities that will be performed during the 11
weeks are the following:
1) Introduction to data management, Map Reduce
2) Hadoop installation and use
3) Data Collection Implementation, Map Reduce Java API
4) PIG, HIVE
5) NoSQL
6) MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase
7) Visualisation
8) Graph Analytics
9) Use Cases presentation and solution design
10) Use Case implementation
11) Use Case result discussion
Almost every week, the course will consist of the theoretical part presentation and the
Laboratory work for a hands on experience. Furthermore, there will be a certification

test close to the end of the program that will allow the possibility to the participants to
get certified to these topics.
Application
The course is reserved to a small community of max 15 selected
candidates. Applicants should have an excellent record in computer science. In
particular, they need to have a BSc or MSc degree in
Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related disciplines with a minimum
GPA of 103/110 (93/100) for the BSc and 102/110 (92/100) for the MSc.
Application packages should be sent by email to Costanza.Vettori@unitn.it with the
text Big Data Crash Course in the subject.
The package should include:
1) Degree certification
2) GPA certification (in case the GPA is already included in (1), this certificate is not
needed.
3) Course transcripts
4) CV
5) [Optional] Name, address & email of one or two persons that can provide some
references/recommendations if needed.
6) [Optional] Any other information that can be considered important for strengthening
the candidates application.
The deadline for submitting the application is February 21st, 2015
