PhilPop 2013 Top 3 choices Plus other 4 Songs I liked.

The Philippines Popular Music Festival 2013, aka PhilPop 2013, just ended last
Saturday, 20th of July, which I didnt watch yet because I want to make this review
of my favorite song entries for the said competition. And after deliberating like the
judges of X Factor and The Voice, I have made my final decision. But before I
release my Top 3, I would like to say that I did not only like 3, not only 4 BUT 7
songs, SEVEN OPM SONGS. Because of this, I would just give brief reviews for my
chosen top 4 to 7.
But before all of that, my song choices were not only based on my taste in music,
but I also considered the modern vibe from each song. In other words, I DID NOT
CHOOSE ANY BALLAD-ISH SONGS. Reasons? Im just tired of listening to ballad
songs which the OPM industry is really overflowing with. So if any songwriter is
reading this, please, AND I REALLY MEAN PLEASE, try not to make another ballad
song because thats not really what is in and this is why OPM is not that noticeable
to the younger generation as me.
And without further adieu, here are Top 3 plus 4 more:
For the 7th place Space by Raffy Calicdan
The song has a nice vibe to it and as the title says, the songwriter wants some
space from his overly attached and clingy girlfriend. Nough said.
My 6th placer is for the song Pansamantagal by Jungee Marcelo
The song was easily to listen to and I like the hotel lounge and jazzy feel to it. It
also reminds me of a song that has a same vibe, but I just cant put my finger on it.
And it also shows the famous trait shown by most Filipinos, the Filipino Time,
which is easily represented by the given title of the song.
The 5th place goes to Sometimes That Happen by Adriennce SarmientoBuenaventura

The lyrics of the song is great because it depicts a story of two lovers who just
didnt have the love connection they used to have before but still wanted to be
just friends. And the most distinct thing I noticed about the whole thing was the
singer because his vocals are almost similar to mine (or what Im targeting for my
voice to be).
For the 4th place Dati by Thyro Alfaro & Yumi Lacsamana
I absolutely like the RnB style of the song and the voices of Sam Concepcion &
Tippy Dos Santos really suited the song really well. This is a song that I would like
to sing to and maybe try to sing to. Its not only a fun song but it makes me
remember my childhood days when there wasnt any high-tech gadgets and
playing with the opposite gender was not much an issue.
And now that I have given some recognition to my 4 other favorite songs, we will
know go to my Top 3:
The only Pop Rock song in the finalists list, my 3rd favorite is Segundo
by Paul Armesin
I really love the fun rock vibe the song gives out. This song actually is the song
which really makes me want to listen to OPM. This song is something that I think
many people would actually enjoy, especially people from my generation. The
lyrics are simple because it talks about mainly about how you consume your time
properly, or vice versa. I also like that some parts of the video was taken from
some parts in my hometown, Mandaluyong City, especially the part when they
were crossing AT Crossing near SM Megamall.
The 2nd place position goes to Time Machine by Kennard Faraon
This song is that I would say should be internationally well-known. The music
composition and vocals were amazing, because I really felt every emotion being
depicted by the song. The video was simple, as in like black and white simple, but
it gives you that romantic feel, which the song is really all about.

And now for the 1st place, the most modern sounding song of all, Papel
by Joey Ayala
Joey Ayala might be old, as seen in the music video, but with the help of Gloc 9 and
the DJ in the background, the song became a combination of the folk and hip-hop
genre, which is a combination of some of my favorite genres. Not only is the music
arrangement great, but the lyrics shows the two sides of papel which made it
something unusual. But all in all it was unusually a great song. It somewhat
restored my faith in OPM. The only thing missing is it to be shared to my fellow
youth.
It is great that they are trying to revive the great name of OPM with the use of a
contest like this, but in my opinion, artists should try to venture to other genres or
maybe find some artists from the younger generation who are from genres, not
including ballads. And believe me when I say sobrang dami na na ng balladeers
sa Pilipinas. Pwede bang humanap naman kayo ng iba? Kaya di sumisikat ang OPM
kasi puro balladeers lang binibigyan niyo ng credit! And with that ranting, I close
this review. Thank You!
