CourseDescription

WMST250isanintroductiontotheinterdisciplinaryfieldofwomensstudieswith
specialfocusontheartsandhumanities.Thecourseaimstodevelopyourskillsin
analysingandcritiquingculturaltexts,particularlytheirrepresentationsofwomenand
theirassumptionsaboutgender,race,class,sexuality,andothercategoriesofidentity.
Italsointroducesyoutotheculturalproductionofarangeofwomenartistsfrom
differentbackgrounds,workinginmanydifferentmediumsandgenres.Itexplores
someofthedifferencesamongwomen,aswellasconnectionsandaffiliationsamong
themascreativeworkersinthearts.

dependonyourinformedandthoughtfulpreparationforclassandyourparticipationin
classdiscussionsandinwritingandgroupprojectactivities.

Theobjectiveofthiscourseistoprovidestudentswiththetoolsandcapacitytothink
aboutandanalyzetheworldtheylivein,tobeengagedcitizensinsociety.The
readings,lectures,anddiscussionsaredesignedtoprovidestudentswithabetter
understandingoftheinfluenceofgender,alongsideothercategoriessuchasrace,
class,sexuality,orability,onstructuringartisticandculturalproduction.However,the
toolsyouwilllearnwillaidyouinanyclassandinanyfieldyouchoosetospecializein.

ExpectationsandPolicies

LateAssignments

Noextensionsormakeupswillbegrantedonassignmentsorexamsunlessinthe
caseofprearrangedabsence,illness,oremergencywhichmustbedocumentedin
writingbyamedicalprofessional.Lateweeklywritingassignmentswillbepenalized
10%perdaypasttheduedate,andmajorassignments(nonweeklypapers,final
exhibition,etc.)willbepenalized25%perdaypasttheduedate.Ireservetherightto
notacceptthematall.AlllateassignmentsshouldbeturnedinviaELMStotheir
