Introduction
The MegaStar radio's RFU and SPU controllers contain programmable
firmware. A Windows based utility for downloading the firmware is supplied on
a CD-ROM and provides the following two modes for downloading:
1. Boot Time - Downloads locally from an IBM-compatible personal
computer (PC) connected to the MegaStar radio.
2. Runtime - Downloads remotely from a PC connected to a MegaStar radio
to any other MegaStar radio accessible through the SCAN network.
Each RFU and SPU controller can store two versions of software, which are
selected using the Windows based utility. (The default version is the one used
by the controller in normal operation.)
The code on the CD can be used to replace either (or both) of the stored versions
of code with a newer (or older) version.
When the code is downloaded from the CD, it will automatically be copied to
the correct location on the controller.
In Boot Time downloads, the code is downloaded into the default memory
bank. Downloading to the default memory bank overwrites the contents of that
memory bank.
For Runtime downloads, the controller will prevent the new code from being
loaded into the default memory bank.

Equipment Required
The following equipment is required to download code to the MegaStars RFU
and SPU controllers:
Pentium PC connected to the network. (Refer to the FarScan manual for
connection instructions.)
Windows 98, NT4.0, Service Pack 4.0, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
operating system with adequate resources.
The current Site Information File must be loaded in the computer.
Disk(s) with new download code.
These instructions.
Procedure Overview
The new code must be downloaded to each MegaStar radio in the network using
the following sequence:
1. Download the SPU code.
2. Download the RFU code.
3. Reboot the RFU(s).
4. Set the new code sectors (optional) for the default (primary) bank.
5. Reboot the SPU.

the radio. The radio system software is located in the \System
Software\SPU\ and \System Software\RFU\ folders on the CD-ROM.
4. Select Runtime as the Download Type. If you select Boottime, remember
it can be used only with local equipment and you do not need to do steps 6
and 7.
5. Select SPU, RFU-1, or RFU-2 to select the area to download to.
6. Enter the address of the equipment the computer is connected to (Master
Address).
7. Enter the UU NE address which is used by the utility to receive SCAN
packets from the equipment.
8. Set the correct COM port and modem connection parameters using the
Settings and then Configure buttons. Remember to use a baud rate of
9600.
If you selected Boottime download, the parameters will be sent to the
equipment at boot time to configure the equipments port with the same
parameters. Skip to step 10.

Introduction
MegaStar radio site addresses, which reside on the SPU Controller, can be
assigned or changed using FarScan. For each changed address, a site
information file must be created, otherwise, that address will not be recognized
in the network.

The saved baud rate is the baud rate saved to the firmware. If power loss occurs,
this baud rate will be restored. If you want the current value to run after a power
loss, it must be saved to the firmware.
Confirmation is needed whenever changing any baud rate settings to insure the
baud rate selected is correct. If a baud rate is confirmed, but not saved, and a
power loss is experienced, the baud rate will revert to the saved setting.

Running Inventory
1. Make sure the Inventory program is running. (See Setting up the Inventory
Software on page 4-3.
2. To inventory shelves at other locations within the radio network, change
the target site (under Get Address).
3. Double-click on an item in the spreadsheet or click once on an item in the
shelf list.
To inventory an entire RFU or SPU shelf, select All in the list of equipment.
Equipment selections are also available from the menu bar under Inventory.
Quick Tips
Inventory individual items:
Double-click on the item to be inventoried. (To inventory several items this
way, wait until the Waiting message in the Card Name column disappears
before double-clicking on the next item.)

The MegaStar Inventory results can be saved in a report for future reference or
for troubleshooting certain IDEEPROM-related errors in SPU or RFU units. To
save the data, do the following:
1. In the Inventory program, click on Options in the menu bar. Make sure
that Show Data and Log Errors are checked in the popup menu.
2. Inventory the units to be reported.
3. After the inventory process is complete, click on File in the menu bar and
select Save As. A series of prompts will appear requesting the file name
and site information.
4. The inventory results will be saved in a .csv (comma separated variable)
format that can be imported into Microsoft Excel for troubleshooting
purposes.
5. Contact Harris Stratex Networks Customer Service for further information
on forwarding the report for troubleshooting purposes.

No Response Message
If a No Response message appears after sending an inventory request, check
the following:
Make sure the computer interface cable is connected to the computer
and the Master Equipment.
The delay may be too short. Select Options, Wait and increase the
delay to 5 seconds.
Make sure a valid Target equipment number is entered.
The item being inventoried may have failed. Use FarScan to determine
the nature of the failure.

GLOSSARY
Baud Rate
A data-communication-rate unit used similarly to bits per second (bps) for lowspeed data; the number of signal-level changes per second (regardless of the
information the signals contain).
BER
Bit Error Rate.
Bit Rate
The rate at which data bits are transmitted over a communication path,
normally expressed in bits per second (bps); not to be confused with the data
signaling rate (baud), which measures the rate of signal charges transmitted.
Communication Port
A serial-data, RS232-, RS423-, or RS422-standard port.
Coordinating Site
The opposite end of a hop.
FarScan
Farinons Remote System Control and Alarm Network surveillance software.
FLASH
Front Panel
The faceplate or cover of a unit or assemblyHop
The span between a transmitter and a receiver.
GLOSSARY
This non-volatile storage device (similar to a computers hard disk) stores the
entire code. It can store two different versions of the code simultaneously,
which is useful when an upgrade is provided. The user can download the
upgrade and still retain the original version of the code.
Glossary-2
IDEEPROMs
Factory programmed memory chip in each field-replaceable unit that stores
inventory data (part number, serial number, date code) and, if applicable,
electrical characteristics (such as oscillator frequency).
IM
Instruction Manual.
Loop-Protected System
A transmission network arranged in a loop, with loop traffic protection. (This
system is referred to as ring-protected in the MegaStar manual.)
Loopback
Feeding back a transmit signal into the systems own receive circuitry for test
purposes; loopback can be equipment or line.
Loopback Plug
Connector wired to loop back transmit lines into receive lines of a signal.
Manual Mode
In FarScan, the operation mode in which the protection-diagnostic system is
manually controlled.
Mux Assembly
Assembly that contains multiplex and demultiplex circuitry.
Nonprotected
Without protection (see HS).
May 2007
Glossary-3
Protection-diagnostic system
See FarScan.
Rack Profile
The arrangement of equipment in the equipment rack.
Radio
A terminal that includes a Signal Processing Unit and a Radio Frequency Unit.
Radio Terminal
A single MegaStar radio.
Radio-to-Radio Repeater
A dual terminal consisting of two radio terminals.
RAM
In order to execute a program, it must be loaded into RAM. The content of
FLASH can be programmed so that at power up a specific version of the code is
executed. This is called the default code.
Ring-Protected System
A transmission network arranged in a loop, with loop traffic protection. Also
called loop-protected.
Read only memory semiconductor chip contains BOOT code that performs the
initialization necessary to make basic hardware checks (memory, power
supplies), provides limited functionality (Miniscan), and prepares the
hardware to accept the main body of software that gives MegaStar its total
functionality.
GLOSSARY

Glossary-4
Unauthorized User/Access
A person not authorized to operate FarScan; access to FarScan by unauthorized
means.
Unfaded BER
Ideal bit error rate, when the signal is received via ideal path conditions.
