Gospel Observations
The Father must draw people before they can come to Jesus
The Father draws people to Jesus (not to himself or Jesus and Mary)
Jesus will raise such a person up in the last day
What John 6:44 does NOT say is the Father only draws some people to Jesus! Please read
John 6:44 again and you will be able to verify that. So the answer to how many people (some
or all) are drawn to Jesus is NOT answered in John 6:44.Other Scriptures answer that
important theological question for us. That is why we must compare Scripture with
Scripture when studying the Bible. Note other related Scriptures which add additional light to
the question about all or some people being drawn to Jesus:
But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself. (John 12:32)
[NOTE: The same Greek word for draw is found in John 6:44 and John 12:32!]
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with
you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Pet 3:9)
This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to
Should we blame God for bad things in life? Many people wrongly blame God for everything,
but are they justified in doing so?How does the devil, mans freewill and this general cursed
age fit into all this? Lets look at the Scriptures for the various reasons painful things happen to us
all.
What Is Bad?
First, how can we be sure an event is really bad? There are so many Biblical
examples citing the different bad things that happened, which really turned
out for good in the end, as with Joseph being sold into Egyptian slavery so he
could advance into the palace. By looking at the big picture, it wasnt really bad
as it first appeared. Furthermore, John being exiled to Patmos resulted in the Book of Revelation, and
Paul being in prison resulted in the prison epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and
Philemon).
No one can escape trouble in our cursed age. Jesus spoke the vital truth being unlike
positive speaker smiley Joel Osteen and papist Kenneth Copeland:
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own. (Mat 6:34)
Trouble comes daily on the righteous and unrighteous. Blaming God for such trouble surely
wont resolve it. God is the answer and solution. Hes not the problem to be blamed! The devil wants
us to blame God to drive a wedge between us and God. He is the deceiver.
Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in
prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of
death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to
the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. (Rev 2:10,11)
So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful
sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. (Job 2:7)
God is infinite. His ways and thoughts are not like our (Isa. 55:8,9). The only way we can
understand him and what he wants is found in the Bible and most of the why questions we may
have about life are not answered.
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though
something strange were happening to you.But rejoice that you participate in the
sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. (1 Pet 4:12,13)
Thats the winning attitude, along with Romans 8:28:
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have
been called according to his purpose.
Without question salvation is of the Lord [YHWH] (Jonah 2:9; Ex. 14:13; 2 Chron. 20:17; Lam.
3:26; etc.). While that is indisputable, it is terrible how that basic truth has been twisted to
support Calvinism, a theology which hangs or falls with all five points being interrelated!
Because Calvinists believe God elects those to be saved and those to be lost (double
predestination), to them the Biblical phrase salvation is of the Lordis most
supportive. That has also led to their error that man has no free will in his own personal salvation
a distortion and misrepresentation of grace, salvation, etc.Salvation comes from the Lord, but
many Scriptures show man has freewill and choice in salvation. For example, in Mark
10:21,22 the rich, young ruler was called by the Lord himself to follow Jesus, yet of his own free will
he turned and walked away from Jesus without eternal life! Jesus wanted him saved, called him
to follow, but he chose of his own free will to reject. He wasnt willing to pay the price to have
the hidden treasure in the field salvation. The truth is man having free will doesnt affect Gods
sovereignty for he has always allowed man to wisely chose or foolishly reject the salvation from the
Lord.
Remember folks, even the devil quotes Scripture
sometimes! A Scripture must be considered in context and in harmony with all other verses on the
same subject to assure truth. That being said, Calvinism distorts various Scriptures,
including the ones which say salvation is of the Lord, but there is more.
The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of
trouble. (Psa 37:39)
Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek out your decrees. (Psa 119:155)
John Calvins (really Augustines) double predestination or Horrible Decree says one is
elected to salvation or passed over as non elect by the sovereign choice of God!
According to them man has no free will or choice in salvation, either before or after it
occurs! To be overlooked for salvation by God and given thehorrible decree of
being non elect means that such a person never had any chance for salvation and will
surely burn forever in the fires of hell.
That even includes non elect infants who die! Calvinisms infant damnationdoctrine is
a repulsive myth, which many of them have never been told about and is related to
the horrible decree! Such is the mythical cruel God ofCalvinism, who does will for some
to perish, in definite contradistinction to the Biblical account (2 Peter. 3:9). Scripture is
clear that God:
Wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. (1 Tim 2:4)
In fact, the true God of the Bible commands all people to enter through the narrow gate
(Mt. 7:13), to repent (Acts 17:30) and to cut off their hand, foot or gouge their eye out if
it is causing them to sin rather than go to hell (Mk. 9:43-48). Jesus also invites all to
come to himself who are weary and burdened to find rest for their souls (Mt. 11:28-30),
and draws all men to himself (Jn. 12:32).
why people perish is not because they were issued the horrible decree, but
because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. (2 Th 2:10) That basic Bible truth
parallels Jesus teaching in John 18:37 where he said:
Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.
Mans heart must love truth (Gods word) to come to salvation, for we are born again by the word of
God (1 Pet. 1:23). Furthermore, not everyone Jesus told, follow me did follow him! Matthew
did (Mt. 9:9), as did Peter and Andrew (Mt. 4:18,19), but the unnamed in Lk. 9:59,60
didnt! Jesus called him, but he didnt respond even though it was Gods will for him
to follow and be saved!
Though Calvinists hate to admit it, it is a fact that all 5 points of Calvinismhang or fall
together, according to one of their own theologians! Dont be deceived: Calvinism is not
the doctrines of grace as taught in the Bible! Man does have free will and a choice in his
salvation. Calvins Horrible Decree is mythical as Santa Claus.
--
Furthermore, under their poisonous view of the sin unto death and imputed
righteousness, they also blatantly teach a license to sin. To make it even worse, they
also teach the perseverance of the saints (or eternal security) is related to the gospel of
grace! That makes their so-called gospel, another gospel, and places them under the
dreaded anathema found in Gal. 1:8,9. The truth is, anyone (whosoever) can partake
of eternal life (John 3:16; Mt. 11:28-30; 2 Pet. 3:9; etc.) and those who reap eternal life
sow to please the Spirit not the flesh (Gal. 6:8,9). Dont be deceived, God wont be
mocked through Calvinism or by anyone (Gal. 6:7-9). If you are listed in 1 Cor. 6:9,10; Eph.
5:5-7; Rev. 21:8; etc. you will not inherit Gods kingdom unless you repent, place your faith in the
Lord Jesus and endure to the end (Heb. 3:14).
It is very common to run into religious people who would identify themselves as four point
Calvinists, three point Calvinists on down to one point Calvinists. Such people reject one or more
of the five points of Calvinisms TULIP, but always seem to embrace the most deadly of the five
the perseverance of the saints (or eternal security). How logical is it for such a person who calls
himself a Calvinist to be less than a five point Calvinist in light of the theology of Calvinism?
Certainly, to the surprise of many, such is an inconsistency, according to one of their chief
spokesmen, the deceased Dr. Edwin H. Palmer. Edwin H. Palmer graduated from Harvard, served
in the Marines, then received both a Th.B and a Th.D in different Reformed seminaries. He was
also an instructor of Systematic Theology in a Reformed Seminary. Hence, Edwin H. Palmer is
certainly qualified to comment on how the five points of Calvinism are interrelated, since he
understood his theology so well. Edwin H. Palmer, referring to the fifth point of Calvinism, said the
following:
This is strictly a Reformed doctrine and hangs or falls together with the other four points that
we have been discussing. There are, however, Christians today who hold to the perseverance of the
saints while at the same time rejecting the other four points. We believe, however, and will try to
show later on, that this is an inconsistency in their thinking. (The Five Points of Calvinism,
Moelker Printing Co. [Grand Rapids, Michigan], 1954 ed, p. 59.)
In keeping with his expert opinion of this theology, Edwin H. Palmer went on to write about the
perseverance of the saints:
This doctrine also naturally follows from the doctrine of the limited atonement ... (ibid., p. 61).
In other words, if the doctrine of limited atonement is true, then so is the perseverance of the saints.
But then on the other hand, if limited atonement is untrue, so is eternal security. The above two
quotes from Edwin H. Palmer are valuable to Christians who know all five points of
Calvinism are not from God and especially desire to help free some Calvinists from the
theological snare they are trapped in.
Many Calvinists, who are less than five pointers, correctly reject limited atonement because of the
Scriptural evidence which powerfully and clearly teaches that Jesus died for every person who ever
lived and not just for those who will enter Gods kingdom in the end. It is,
therefore, inconsistent for eternal security proponents to reject limited atonement and still believe in
the favorite fifth pointeternal security! Again, this is not my conclusion, but the conclusion of
one who knew Calvinism when he was alive, much better than the vast majority does today.
In 1980, the year of Edwin H. Palmers death, an enlarged edition of this same book was released.
In this more recent edition the words were slightly changed from the previous quote, while
retaining its essence:
All five points of Calvinism hang or fall together (The Five Points of Calvinism, Baker Books
[Grand Rapids, Michigan], 1980 enlarged edition, p. 69).
Dear reader, if you know that any of the five points of Calvinism are unscriptural, then the
rest are as well. All a Christian has to do, therefore, is to refute any of the five points of
Calvinism and by doing so he has destroyed all five points, according to Dr. Edwin H. Palmer
himself. But dear Christian, please be assured that people who embrace Calvinisms beloved fifth
point wont surrender it easily. They often feel just like Palmer did as reflected in his following
statement:
