Due: December 03, 2009 (Thursday) at class hour

PROB SET 1

Instruction: Answer the following questions on letter-sized (8.5x11) paper, preferably recycled
(i.e. one side already used). Only one side of every sheet of paper shall be used to write
your solutions to the problems.
I.

Stresses (choose 2 of 5 problems. 5 pts each)

1. Redo Section 1.8 of Beer and Johnston 4th ed on page 12. But this time, change the figure to
the one shown below.

a. Determine the Normal stress in boom AB and Rod BC

b. Determine the Shearing stresses in various connections
c. Determine the Bearing stresses in various connections

a. Determine the distance x in meters so that the normal stress at section a-a (200x100 mm 2
post C) equals the tensile stress at member A (x-sectional area = 1200 mm2)
b. Find the maximum load, Pmax, that can be applied at x = 1.0 m, maintaining equilibrium,
if the maximum shearing stress at post C is 7.5 MPa and the maximum normal stress of
member A is 10 MPa.

3. Refer to the truss shown below:

Given:
Allowable shearing stress = 70 MPa
Allowable bearing stress = 140 MPa
Diameter of rivets = 19 mm

thickness of BC = 6 mm
thickness of BE = 13 mm

Determine:
a. Number of rivets to fasten member BC to the gusset plate.
b. Number of rivets to fasten member BE to the gusset plate.
4. The structure below consists of a circular rod AB (diameter = 25 mm) and a rectangular
boom BC (20mm x 20mm). The rod and the boom are connected by a pin at B. Determine
the Pmax that can be applied at B assuming that normal stresses will govern.

When Pmax is applied, determine:
a. Angle (0 45) if normal stress on plane a-a is 69.46 MPa.
b. What is the corresponding shearing stress on plane a-a?

5. Steel plates B and C are fully glued to member A thus, forming a compound member as
shown in the figure. This will be used to punch two holes in a 10-mm thick wooden plank. If
the maximum average shearing stress in the glue is 600 MPa, and the allowable normal
stress in member A is 900 MPa, (thickness of A, B, and C is 20 mm) determine:
a. Pmax that can be applied to the compound member.
b. Is this force Pmax enough to punch holes in the plank if the failure shearing stress in the
plank is 800 MPa?

II. Strain (choose 2 of 4 problems. 5 pts each)

1. A rigid bar AD is supported by two rods as shown. There is no strain in the vertical bars
before load P is applied. After load P is applied, the axial strain in rod BF is 400m/m.
determine:
a. The axial strain in rod CE.
b. The axial strain in rod CE if there is a 0.25 mm clearance in the connection at pin C
before the load is applied.

2. A thin rectangular plate is deformed as shown. Determine:

a. Horizontal displacement of B.
b. Normal strain in AD
c. Shearing strain at A
d. Shearing strain at C
AB = + 0.0022 mm/mm
BC = - 0.0030 mm/mm
CD = + 0.0050 mm/mm

3. The rigid bar BD is originally in a horizontal position shown. If loads cause the end to be
displaced downwards B=2 mm and the bar rotates =0.2o, determine the average normal
strain in (a) the wires AD and BC, and (b) rod CD if there is a 2 mm gap in the connection at

III. Material Properties (choose 2 of 3 problems. 5 pts each)

1. At the proportional limit, a 200-mm gage length of a 15-mm diameter alloy bar has
elongated 0.90 mm and the diameter has been reduced 0.022 mm. the total axial load carried
was 58.4 kN. Determine the following properties of this material:
a. The modulus of elasticity
b. Poissons ratio
c. The proportional limit
2. A rectangular plate with a thickness of 5 mm is subjected to a state of biaxial stress as
shown below. It is made of a linear elastic material having a Youngs modulus of 120 GPa
and shear modulus of 45 GPa:
a. What must the magnitude of the normal stress yy be if the deformation of the plate along
the y-direction is to be zero?
b. What is the corresponding deformation in the x-direction?

3. A high-strength structural steel bar with diameter 2.0 inches is subjected to a compressive
load. The bar has a modulus of elasticity of 29000 ksi (kip* per square inch) and a Poissons
ratio of 0.29. Due to some limitations to the tolerances, the diameter of the bar cannot
exceed 2.001 inches under load. Determine the maximum permissible load that can be
applied on the bar.

Sir J.U. Tan Tian
Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the
years approach when you will say, I find no pleasure in themNow all has been heard; here
is the conclusion of the matter: Fear [love] God and keep His commandments, for this is the
whole of man.(Eccl 12:1, 13)
