Big changes this month!

Teresa has decided the time has come
for a change and she would like to
concentrate on other things including her
and Kevins business Camposol Heating
& Maintenance. As a result, the two
offices have now been separated with CHM
remaining in the back office and the Costa
Clida Chronicle desk will now be in the
front office, sharing with Holmes & Pegg.
Martine, whom many of you know, will
continue to man the desk for us. We wish
Teresa all the best in her new ventures and
thank her for all her work and dedication
over the last 9 years.
For those who come to the office to
pay for their adverts, or would like to
talk to someone about their advert,
please note that the new office hours
will be 10am-2pm Tues/Wed/Thur.
The Sales telephone number will
remain the same 619 199 407 as
will the Costa Clida Chronicle office
number 968 970 680
Ken Robertson will be taking over most
of the sales, so we welcome him to the
team. Many people in the Mazarrn area

will know Ken as he has been helping us

with some of the delivery for the past few
months and he is also one of the founders
of Open Door. Ken will be getting round
to meet as many advertisers as possible
with the help of Teresa over the next few
weeks.

Fear is the currency of life these days

- from the dreadful incidents in France and
many other countries where violent bullies
hide behind a mask of politics, or religion,
or some other unconnected cause, to the
threat of a disease running out of control like
Ebola. We are all fearful to various degrees.
Fear can be a good thing when it makes us
check the road before we cross, or pack our
own parachute, or test the water before we
dive in. Of course it can be unhealthy when
it leads to dismay or stress.

Even though I walk through the

darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for
you are with me; your rod and staff,
they comfort me. Psalm 23 v 4.
You can find us most Sunday evenings
in the Cultural Centre, Camposol B at
5.30pm. Contact Ken on 646 705 403 or

doing each week.
Come and join us. We offer something
a bit different. Sit around and chat over
a cup of tea or coffee and learn about
God and what He can do for YOU.
We also hold monthly social events in Los

The demonstrations around the world

wont take away the fact that many
people will be looking over their
shoulders in fear of the next atrocity.
Complicated though it is, the Bible has a lot
to say about fear. When Elijah was at the
peak of his mission to represent God in a
world where the leaders had rejected God
and worse still actually worked against the

God who had rescued them time and time

again, he got really fearful and depressed.
The irony of all of this was Elijah was afraid
that King Ahab was going to kill him and in
the end he didnt actually die at all. All is
not lost, because just as God had a plan for
Elijah despite his fears, He can have a plan
for you as well. Peace in the midst of turmoil
resulted in God quieting Elijahs fears and
renewing his strength. Being a Christian
doesnt get rid of all our fears but we have
a God we can trust in the midst of them like
Elijah did.

The Annual New Years Day Swim was

a European extravaganza with participants
from Germany, Holland, France, Scotland,
Wales and England. 30 bodies in all braved the
very cold water off the Bahia Beach watched
by some 350 people and raising money for
PALS (Protection and Life Saving) who this
year celebrate their 15th anniversary. This is
the only event each year that PALS actually
ask for sponsorship support, so if you have
pledged or wish to add to the funds, please
get the cash to a PALS member. Normally
monies are raised through events and holiday
breaks and such is the popularity, that of the
three big breaks, only space remains on a trip
to Portugal; more later.
PALS hold monies for the purchase of
emergency life-saving equipment that is
beyond the normal budgetary resources
available to 112, Cruz Roja or other official
local organisations and have a recorded

history of spending in excess of a quarter

of a million Euros on material including
defibrillators, hospital tents, and inshore
lifeguard jet skis. They were the instigators
of CAF, who together with Costa Clida
International Radio and The Lions, purchased
a new ambulance used by Cruz Roja at a cost
of 57000. 2014 was our most successful
fund raising year since 2007, so hopefully this
is an indication that the monetary crisis is
finally coming to an end.
PALS are proud that their accounts are
transparent and updated on a monthly basis
so that every cent received can be seen. PALS
members receive no free holidays or benefits
and pay the same as any supporter on their
trips and are the areas oldest registered
charity.

full board in the Helios Hotel at 160 over St

in October, the all-inclusive cruise, including
tips and drinks and coach transfers visiting all
around the Northern Med is just 700.

The Leos were asked to help some children

in Totana who are sleeping at the school in
Totana because their parents had lost their
homes. There was an appeal for blankets

and pastries to the British community.

Within 3 years Liz had totally outgrown
these premises and with the news that the
new motorway would also take through
traffic away from El Paretn, Liz decided
to expand and move her business to
Camposol.
At enormous expense, Lizs Caf was
born and started trading on Camposol
B at the end of 2008 where it has gone
from strength to strength.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

In February of 2008, Liz opened Cornish

Pride in El Paretn being the first franchise
in the area to offer delicious pies, cakes

From the age

of 16, Liz
trained as a

had
over
30

experience
in all types of

worked long
and hard to
obtain all the
necessary
hygiene,
food safety
and
food
handling
certificates which also enables her to offer
a full outside catering facility. Liz and her
team at Lizs Caf have always listened
carefully to suggestions from the general
public and it really shows, as Lizs Caf
now boasts an enormous selection of top
quality, fresh and homemade products.
Liz has 7 lovely ladies (and Nicholas!) who
work incredibly hard and there is always
service with a smile from them all.

If you have not visited Lizs Caf for a

just what is on offer:
Start the day with a Full English

All people have the right to access quality,

effective cancer treatment and services on
equal terms, regardless of geography and
without suffering economic hardship as a
consequence.

cancers requiring a multi-faceted

approach. National Cancer Control
Plans (NCCPs) should consider the
full spectrum of multidisciplinary
cancer services and infrastructure
including for prevention, diagnosis,
early detection, treatment and
palliative care.

The World Cancer Declaration Targets

to be achieved by 2025:
1

Health systems will be strengthened

to ensure sustained delivery of
effective
and
comprehensive,
people-centred
cancer
control
programmes across the life-course.

Access
to
accurate
cancer
diagnosis,
quality
multimodal
treatment,
rehabilitation,
supportive and palliative care
services, including the availability
of affordable essential medicines
and
technologies,
will
have
improved.

These plans must include efforts

to provide psychosocial support
that addresses the full impact of
cancer on emotional, mental and
physical wellbeing of patients, their
families and carers.

NCCPs also have a vital role in

strengthening health systems by
addressing key constraints to the
delivery of effective, quality cancer
services. This includes the delivery
of a skilled health workforce;
infrastructure; adequate financing
and focusing research where it
is most needed so that existing
knowledge
is
translated
into
practical outcomes for patients.

Effective pain control and distress

management services will be
universally available.

the existing health budget.

*

Investments in a skilled and

supported health workforce should
be priorities.

Radiotherapy has been shown to

be a cost-effective approach to
cancer treatment in high-income
countries and similar evidence is
also emerging from developing
countries. Greater awareness is
needed amongst policy makers,
health professionals, patients and
caregivers of the increasing benefits
of using modern radiotherapy.

Reducing the financial toll of cancer on

individuals, families and economies
*

The delivery of universal health

coverage (UHC) and other social
protection measures can play an
important role in closing the
unacceptable gaps in access to
cancer services.

The
capacity
for
low-income
countries to move towards UHC
has been demonstrated in at
least nine low- income and lowermiddle-income countries in Africa
and Asia.

Importantly, UHC will not be

sufficient on its own to address
the global cancer and noncommunicable (NCD) burden due
to its focus on health. The post2015 framework must also address
the underlying social, economic,
political,
environmental
and
cultural factors that influence an
individuals capacity to maximise
their health and wellbeing at all
ages and life stages.

Meeting this challenge is not beyond

us if we work together to:
*

Strengthen health systems that

deliver cancer prevention and care
services.

Improve access to essential cancer

medicines and technologies

Reduce the financial toll of cancer

on
individuals,
families
and
economies.

The Challenge

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Under-resourced health systems

and lack of social protection in
many countries are widening
gaps in access to cancer services
and heightening financial risk.
Vulnerable populations, including
women, often face barriers to
access early diagnosis or treatment
and children and adolescents are
often denied access to lifesaving
cancer medicines.
A number of barriers impair access
to essential cancer medicines
and technologies in low-resource
settings,
including
affordable
pricing of vaccines and legislative
restrictions.
Large
gaps
also
exist in access to radiotherapy
(RT) for curative or pain relieving
treatment.
There is a large financial burden
associated with cancer for patients
and their carers and the impact of
cancer-related death and disability
on labour supply hinders national
productivity and development.

Meeting the Challenge

Strengthening health systems that
deliver cancer prevention and care
services
*

Cancer is a complex disease with the

appropriate treatment of most

It is Not Beyond Us to meet the

challenge if...
*

Access to new, patented and

expensive cancer medicines are
considered on an individual basis
based on priorities identified within
national cancer control planning.

It is understood that radiotherapy

is a critical component of highquality cancer care. It can cure
cancers alone, or in combination
with surgery or chemotherapy.

Governments take specific actions

to meet the global target of an
80% availability of affordable and
essential medicines and basic
technologies.

UHC is a commitment to equity and

ensuring access to quality essential
health services based on need and
not on the ability to pay.

The next generation of global

development goals and targets
address UHC and acknowledge
equity and health as a human right
with the ultimate consequence
of maximising healthy lives at all
stages of life.

Achieving equity in access to essential

cancer medicines and technologies
*

Improved access to affordable

treatment for cancer should be a
genuine priority for the post-2015
development agenda.
Guided by the WHO Essential
Medicines List, national cancer
planning
processes
should
identify a list of essential cancer
medicines for training, supply and
reimbursement in combination
with the development of evidencebased national clinical guidelines.
National
authorities
must
consider mechanisms to increase
efficiency in procurement, supply
and use of cancer medicines and
promote access to medicines within

Ralph Smith, MBE for Services to

British Community in Spain
British lawyer Ralph Smith, international
counsel at Gomez Acebo & Pombo law
firm in Madrid, has been honoured with a
Member of the British Empire (MBE) award
for his services to the British Embassy and
voluntary work on behalf of the British
community in Spain.

Mr Smith was included in the 2015 New

Year Honours for his outstanding voluntary
work over many years, including as an
active member of the British Cemetery of
Madrid committee. He is a dual qualified
lawyer who runs the Cambridge University
Association of Madrid. He is also VicePresident of the UK Alumni Network Spain
and has been a member of the college
council of the Kings group of British
schools in Madrid since 2006.

Upon learning about the award, British

Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, said,
I would like to congratulate Ralph for his
richly deserved award after so many years
of service to the British Embassy and to
the British community in Spain.
Mr. Ralph Smith said, It was a wonderful
surprise to receive the news, but its also
humbling to realize that nowadays, unless
you live as a hermit in a cave, your work
inevitably ends up being a team effort; in
my case with the invaluable support of my
colleagues at Gmez-Acebo & Pombo and

my wife Vega. You try to do your job the

very best as you can, but when something
like this happens, its just a delightful
surprise.

were sentenced to a total of 82 years after
being convicted at Liverpool Crown Court

All seven men were part of a group
responsible for ATM attacks at 28 premises
(banks, post offices and supermarkets) in
Wirral, Lancashire, Cheshire, Southport,
Liverpool,

the businesses targeted by the thieves, of
approximately 800,000, not to mention
damage to the properties estimated to be in
excess of 480,000. The techniques used
in these thefts from cash point machines

were extremely dangerous and it is
fortunate that no-one was hurt.

Last month we were pleased to welcome
Bar Lara to the magazine and to our Menu

out some of their offerings. Lara has been
a customer of ours on and off for years and
many of you will remember Lara from various
venues that he worked in prior to his taking
the lease on the Paseo in Puerto de Mazarrn.
The location is lovely with superb sea views
and his food is delicious. I have never seen
such enormous portions either. One of his
platos combinados had at least 3 pork steaks
and 2 fried eggs with chips. Had I known, we
could have shared the portion between the
two of us! Excellent value for money.
I have been pounding the streets for about 9
years now with the Costa Clida Chronicle

and can honestly say that on the whole I have

thoroughly enjoyed it. I have worked long
hours and done my best to advise literally
hundreds of businesses over the years and
met some wonderful people, some of whom
have also become good friends, but I recently
came to realise that in the name of one my
favourite customers, it is really is A time for a
change. I intend to take a well-earned short
break and then I have a few new projects on
the horizon that I want to take on later in the
year. I will not be disappearing immediately,
as I intend to do a professional handover to
my colleagues and I will still be on hand to
offer any help and introductions where I can
to ensure a smooth transition.
I hope that all our readers and advertisers will
continue to support the magazine which has
grown to become one of the most popular in
the region for both advertisers and readers
alike.
It was fun!
Hasta Luego Amigos!

It had been my first trip to Sweden and it

turned out that all the clichs were true;
very clean and beautiful, friendly people,
laid back atmosphere and of course the most
obvious one its all very expensive!
Id just spent a few days in the Southern
town of Malmo, shaking my head at the
prices compared to the UK. Everything
from a bottle of water to especially going
to the pub was rather painful on the old
wallet. Thats why the Swedes dont have
a great pub culture, my mate told me.
We prefer to drink at home. I nodded my
head thinking, yup that gets my vote as I
handed over 140 Krona (near 12) for two
beers.

after Id finished.
No! I replied far too quickly and in a panic.
Im full thanks! My mate stifled a giggle.
We spent the next hour wandering this
charming but frozen town; me pointing
and commenting on the prices in shop
windows until my mate eventually gave me
an interesting debriefing on Scandinavian
monetary issues, using alcohol as a classic
example.
Its quite simple really. Nobody in
Scandinavia buys booze in their own country.
The Norwegians come to Denmark, while
the Danes, depending on the conversion
rate for their Krona, often come to Sweden.

Two days later, some 600 kilometres north

in Swedens ski capital Salen, I was really
taken aback to find the prices up there
almost 30% higher than Southern Sweden!
Ouch.

And what about the Swedes? I mean surely

you buy your own Absolute Vodka at home?
You make the stuff!

By no means a millionaire, just used to

Swedish prices, my friend looked at me with
a wry smile. You really think its expensive
in Sweden dont you? We were sitting in a
tiny caf drinking hot chocolate.

He looked at me like Id just suggested

something really dumb. Swedes would
never buy Vodka in Sweden; far too
expensive. Sometimes we go to Denmark,
but usually we take our cars on the ferry
across the Baltic Sea to Germany. Very
cheap there!

Of course, ridiculous! I blurted out

and then started to rabbit on about price
comparisons. He drained his cup, slapped
some Krona on the table and stood up, still
smiling. Cmon, lets go.
Where to? I asked.
He kept smiling, Cmon!
The car thermometer read minus 16C. I
turned the heater on full blast. So, whats
the plan? I asked, letting out a plume of
grey frozen breath.
Ill show you expensive.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

We drove for a couple of hours, me rather

excitedly taking in the pristine white
countryside as my friend concentrated on
the treacherous roads. We soon crossed
the border out of the EU and ended up in
a snowy, sleepy Norwegian town. Excellent,
another country to add to my list.

I gave him a puzzling look, Eh...whats

going on? Where are we going?
He grinned from ear to ear, Norway!

Inside a wee caf, I ordered a coffee and

pointed at some unpronounceable pastry
thing, before I could work out the price.
Of course, I now had not only the Swedish
but also Norwegian Krona to contend with,
which are at differing exchange rates. It
did therefore take me some minutes before
I finally made the conversion into Sterling.
I was flabbergasted - 12! Thankfully my
order tasted
as good as
it
looked.
On learning
that a beer
in this small
Norwegian
town would
cost
near
10,
I
decided
Id
be
teetotal
for the day.

I scratched my chin and nodded my

head slightly as I pictured people from
three different countries driving across
international borders to purchase their own
home-made products from another country.
Hmm, just lower the taxes I thought to
myself.
In the car on the drive back to Sweden,
I decided that all of Scandinavia was
expensive. However, with my changing
attitudes of going from the UK to Malmo
up to Salen then over to Norway, I realised
that what we think of as expensive is - all
relative really.

Would you
like anything
else? Asked the polite waitress in English

I fished a Mars Bar out of my pocket,

broke it in two and offered half to my mate
while grinning as I proudly announced,
Poundland UK, three for a quid!

Cruz Azul Visits Los Infiernos Perrera

Cruz Azul Murcia is actively liaising with
local animal charities to encourage a more
cohesive approach to animal welfare in
the Murcia region. As part of this initiative,
Lyn Baines (President) and Sue Thomason
(Vice President) met with volunteers from
Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters (LIPS),
who take in dogs from Torre Pacheco, Los
Alczares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar
and Pilar de la Horadada.

Lyn. We offer assistance to owners on

low incomes whose pets need veterinary
intervention. In return, we ask the owners
to agree to have their pet sterilised, micro
chipped and vaccinated. This will help
towards cutting down the number of dogs
that end up on the streets or in dog pounds
such as the one in Los Infiernos. We admire
the work that LIPS is doing and will support
them as much as we can.
In addition to dog walkers, LIPS needs
volunteers not only to help them achieve the
ultimate goal of finding forever homes for all
the dogs in their care, but also to help make
them as comfortable and happy as possible
while they wait for their new owners. They
urgently need someone who is computerliterate to manage their Facebook page and
respond to enquiries. They also need more
fundraisers to help bring in money for the
following:

LIPS, charity No G30881924, has a goal to

never to have a healthy dog put to sleep. If
you would like to support them financially,
you can donate via their PayPal account
losinfiernosdogs@hotmail.com and like
their Facebook page Los Infiernos Perrera
Supporters.

1. To expand their neutering project

to make it easier and cheaper to
rehome the animals.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

LIPS need more volunteers to walk,

groom and interact with the dogs.
Interaction is vital because in some cases
the dogs have been abused and they need
to learn to trust maybe for the first time in
their lives. Others may simply need to learn
to walk on a lead to make it easier to have
them accepted for adoption.
Cruz Azuls visit was to see the problem
first hand and to discuss ways in which
they could help. Our remit is to encourage
responsible pet ownership and to reduce the
stray population in this region commented

2. They need huge amounts of dried

food, as well as specialist food for
sick or pregnant dogs, puppies and
dogs with allergies - approx 11 per
bag.

Cruz Azul is happy to accept donations of

food and money for LIPS at their donation
centres in San Javier and San Pedro del
Pinatar, which are open from 10am-2pm
Monday to Saturday.

3. Vaccinations for all the puppies to

protect them in the pound - a parvo
injection costs 10.
4. Enclosed isolation cages for puppies
and nursing mothers with pups. LIPS
often receive litters of very young
puppies.

Cruz Azul Murcia charity No. 11.720/1a,

exists to provide veterinary care for sick
and injured pets of people in need and
to promote responsible pet ownership.
If you or someone you know needs
help, or you would like to volunteer or
donate, please call 693 017 616 or visit
their www.cruzazulmurcia.es

5. Put roofs on all of the cages to protect

the dogs from the rain and sun.

three mares, which were all later found to be
pregnant.

You wouldnt even know they were in foal,

theyre so thin, Sue said. It was a breeding
yard and because of the crisis the owner
couldnt sell them. Apparently at one stage
those mares would have gone for as much as
35,000. This guy had obviously just stopped
feeding them.
It is understood police are pushing for
prosecution.

They cant just take the donkeys and leave

the horses every animal has to be removed
if theres a court order, Easy Horse Care

said. Basically, if we didnt take these horses,
all of these animals would be left there to

suffer because the courts cant hand them

over to places that arent registered charities
and there just arent that many registered
charities around that take horses.

This months vegetable is Asparagus and

perhaps not one that people automatically
use when cooking. I tried to grow some once
when I lived in the UK, but it was very time
consuming to get just a few spears. One
of the common ways to use Asparagus
in Spain is ready cooked out of a tin and
placed on top of a salad. There are also lots
of tapas with Asparagus in and below are a
couple of examples which are quick and easy
to make, but delicious for a snack. I have
added my soup recipe, but also my risotto
dish which is very easy to make. A lot of
people are worried about trying risotto, but
this recipe is very easy to follow but tastes
amazing with Asparagus.
Buen Apetito
Asparagus and Nuts
2 tbsp butter
1 pound of Asparagus spears
1/3 lb almond nut flakes
1/3 lb Parmesan cheese
Melt the butter in a frying pan, add the
Asparagus spears and cook for 3 minutes.
Add the nut flakes and the cheese and cook
until cheese has melted. Serve immediately.
Asparagus and Mushrooms
1 bunch of fresh Asparagus trimmed
lb fresh mushrooms
2 tsp of olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Chopped fresh rosemary to taste

Preheat oven to 450. Snap the ends off

Asparagus spears (they will break where
tender) and divide into 4 equal portions.
Spray the centre of each foil sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place one salmon fillet in
the centre of each sheet, top with a serving
of the Asparagus and drizzle with lemon
juice. Sprinkle with freshly ground pepper
and salt or seasoning and blend as desired.
Bring up the sides of foil and fold top over
twice. Seal ends, leaving room for air to
circulate inside the packet. Place packets on
a baking sheet and cook in oven for 15 to
18 minutes or until salmon is opaque. Serve
with lemon wedges on the side.
Cream of Asparagus Soup
1lb fresh Asparagus spears
1 medium onion, diced
1 tbsp unsalted butter
24 ounces chicken stock
1 medium potato, peeled and diced
1 celery rib, chopped
1 tsp dried thyme (or fresh thyme)
8 ounces cream (use evaporated skim milk
to cut more fat)
Salt and freshly ground white pepper
Soak and rinse Asparagus. Remove top
inch of each spear, discard tough lower
touch part and reserve middle portion of
stalks. In a saucepan, over medium heat,
saut onion in butter for 3-5 minutes or until
translucent. Add chicken stock, Asparagus
tips and stems, potato, celery, thyme,
salt and pepper. Cover and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 12-15
minutes or until vegetables are soft. Remove

from heat and let cool. Remove Asparagus

tips and set aside. Place half of the soup
at a time in a blender container. Cover and
blend at high speed for 20-30 seconds or
until very smooth and return blended soup
to saucepan. Add reserved Asparagus tips
and cream (or half and half, or milk) and
heat thoroughly, or refrigerate to be served
cold.
Asparagus Risotto
1lbs Asparagus
5 cups canned chicken soup
1 cup water
1 tbsp butter
1 large onion
2 cups medium-grain white rice
cup dry white wine
2 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
cup whipping cream
Trim rough ends from Asparagus; discard.
Cut off Asparagus tips and reserve. Cut
stalks into long pieces. Place 2/3 of
stalk pieces, 1 cup broth and 1 cup water in
blender, reserving the remaining 1/3 of stalk
pieces. Puree mixture until smooth. Set
aside. Melt butter in heavy large saucepan
over medium heat. Add onion and saut
until tender; about 8 minutes. Add rice and
stir for 1 minute. Add wine and cook until
absorbed, stirring often; about 2 minutes.
Add cup broth and chopped rosemary
and simmer until liquid is absorbed, stirring
often; about 4 minutes. Continue to cook for
15 minutes, adding more broth by cupfuls
and allowing liquid to be absorbed before
adding more, stirring often. Add reserved
Asparagus stalk pieces and Asparagus
tips and continue cooking until rice is just
tender and mixture is creamy, adding broth
as needed and stirring often; about 10
minutes longer. Stir in cup Parmesan and
cream. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Serve, sprinkle remaining Parmesan on top
of dish.

Preheat oven to 230 C. Lightly spray a

baking sheet with vegetable cooking spray.
Place the Asparagus and mushrooms in a
bowl. Drizzle with the olive oil, then season
with rosemary, salt and pepper; toss well.
Lay the Asparagus and mushrooms out
on the prepared baking sheet in an even
layer. Roast in the preheated oven until the
Asparagus is tender; about 15 minutes.

The fleshy green spears of Asparagus are

both succulent and tender and have been
considered a delicacy since ancient times.
Like all vegetables, asparagus doesnt
instantly die when it is picked, but instead,
continues to engage in metabolic activity.

Ileocaecal and Houston Valves

These valves are incredibly important for the
proper running of our digestive system, yet
most people have never heard of them.
Put simply, the Ileocaecal Valve is a flap
sitting in between the Small/Large Intestines.
Your stomach breaks down food, which is
transferred to the Small Intestine for further
digestion; goodness being retained and waste
sent on its way for elimination. If this flap
is not doing its job, the waste products are
allowed to flow back into the stomach.
The Houston Valve sits in between the
Large Intestine/Descending Colon. Again,
goodness is absorbed by the Large Intestine
and the waste is eliminated as faeces. If this
valve is not working properly, waste products
are then pushed back into the Large Intestine

Asparagus has a very high respiration rate,

which makes it more perishable than many
vegetables. By wrapping the ends of the
Asparagus in a damp paper or cloth towel,
you can help prolong it shelf life, but it is
better to consume Asparagus within about
48 hours of purchase.
Asparagus season is
considered to be spring,
but you can normally
find
this
popular
vegetable
year-round.
Of course you can buy
the white Asparagus
in jars or tins here in
Spain, but it is nothing
like the wonderful fresh
Asparagus. Look for
firm, bright green spears
with healthy tips that
are tight and not mushy.
Spear size ranges from fat - these come from
older plants - to pencil thin. Whether you like
skinny or fat spears is personal preference,
but for even cooking, choose spears that are
uniform in size. You can steam, roast, simmer,

and eventually enter the blood stream. This

poisons your body, which could cause further
problems like Leaky Gut and Colon.
If you are experiencing any of the following
problems, it COULD be the result of these
valves not working properly:
Brain Fog, Headaches, Sadness, Back Ache,
Bloating, Heart Burn, Indigestion, IBS,
Cramps, Joint Pain, Restless Legs, Weight
Gain or Loss, Skin Problems, etc. Treat your
body like you would your car the engine
needs an MOT and a clean out occasionally
and so does your body.
Find a point on the right hand side of the
body in between your hip and your navel and
press in. If you feel tenderness, you may be
experiencing an open or closed Ileocaecal

grill, microwave or cut into small pieces, stirfry Asparagus. If you want it cold on salads,
simply bring it to the boil and then plunge
it into very cold water. This will keep the
Asparagus crisp and tender.
Now is the time of year when the wonderful
wild Asparagus starts to show its new shoots
through the ground. If you have never found
any of this tasty vegetable, look for evidence
of last years growth the spiky green ferny
foilage whilst you are out walking. This is
where the new Asparagus will appear.
Wild Asparagus (Asparagus racemosus) is
a species of Asparagus with a long history
of use in India and other parts of Asia as a
botanical medicine. Many medicinal qualities
of wild Asparagus have been associated
with phyto-nutrients present in its roots. It
also contains saponins, not only in its roots,
but also in its shoots. Saponins in food have
been shown to have anti-inflammatory and
anti-cancer properties, and their intake has
also been associated with improved blood
pressure, improved blood sugar regulation,
and better control of blood fat levels.

Valve. The same goes for the left hand side

of the body. Find the point in between your
hip and navel, then drop down an inch and
press in. Again, if you feel tenderness, you
could be experiencing the same problem.
By
using
non-invasive
acupressure
(massaging certain points on the body) and
advice regarding diet, these valves can very
easily be reversed.

Asparagus esparrago
Asparagus grows most vigorously where
it receives full sun all day and it requires
protection from wind and a location where
they wont shade other parts of the garden
with their tall foliage. They thrive in light,
sandy, compost-enriched and weed-free
soil. When planting Asparagus, cover the
crowns with 2 inches of soil and water them
thoroughly. Asparagus plants require a lot of
water and protection. Once the Asparagus
spears appear, snap them off at soil level
when they are 5 to 8 inches tall. After that
time, leave any additional spears in place to
provide energy to the roots. You can harvest
young Asparagus for 2-4 weeks, but once
established, this can stretch to 6-8 weeks.
Leave a few of the late spears on the crowns
and continue to water to encourage more
growth the following year.

Ben, our older brother, took us out for a

of food. Connor ate more ice cream than I
thought was humanly possible! It was a great
idea for a present and I think Ben will do that
every year now. This was a couple of days
before Christmas.
Christmas arrived finally. It was good and
everyone was woken up by Bens Queen
music which wasnt a bad thing particularly
and it did mean we actually woke up, which I
might not have done. Christmas Day was a bit
different really, as Matt was not with us and
we are all that bit older.
We had a nice New Years Eve party with a
family who recently moved to Spain; Adam,
Jessica and their children, Macey, Bobby
and Oliver. Dad lit the fire pit in the garden
and we sat around that and had a drink
and a few nibbles to eat. After a while the

paired with Bobby and I took Oliver to hide
under the trailer and they couldnt find us.
After a while most of the hiding places were
already used and midnight approached so we
all went into the house and ate some more
food. Dad opened a bottle of champagne and
some non-alcoholic drink for the younger
ones. We all toasted midnight and we popped
giant party poppers which left confetti on the
floor for days afterwards and I had to clean
it up, which of course I wasnt bitter about,
as you can imagine! We watched the London
fireworks which were cool and Jessica wanted
to watch Queen perform. They all stayed the
night.
The next day we had bacon sandwiches for
breakfast and then went on the quads. It was
Jessicas first time on one so she was cautious
until she got the hang of it and then she was
soon speeding around the garden. Macy and
Oliver loved it and went on with Dad a few
times. After this we went inside for a coffee
before they left for home again. I think we all
had a good time.

Now that Christmas and New Year are over,

I have returned to school and will be doing
iGCSE exams early this year. Because I need
to revise for these I wont be writing here for
a while, but I will let you know how I get on! I
hope you had a Great Christmas and a happy
New Year. I think Shannon will be telling you
about how she is getting on back in the UK
next month.

Just when youve finally eaten the last of the

Yes, the season of Lent is here, but what
does it mean to you?
Well, to be honest, it wont make the
slightest difference to many people. In fact,
they probably think its that time between
pancakes and Easter eggs and nothing more,
but lots of folk will spend this period going
without something they like. Maybe it will
be chocolate, cakes, biscuits, tea, coffee,

smoking habit. This is because we are taught

Road traffic law changes due to come into

force in the early part of 2015 include speed
limit reductions, minimum distances and
safety and liability regulations.
Although not yet given the Royal assent in
Parliament, the motoring legislation will bring
down the speed limit on roads in non-built up
areas from 100km/hr to 90km/hr where the
hard shoulder is at least 1.5 metres (411)
wide and from 70km/hr down to 50km/hr
on roads of less than 6.5 metres (just over
210) wide.
Speed limits in built-up areas will remain at
50km/hr, but will fall to 30km/hr on singlecarriageway one-way streets and to 20km/
hr on streets where the pavement and road
surface are level with each other.
Motorway speed limits will remain at 120km/
hr, but may go up to 130km/hr for cars,
motorbikes and three-wheeled vehicles on
a temporary basis where the section of the
highway in question is considered to be in
perfect condition of safety and repair and the
weather is ideal for driving.

Seatbelts must be worn at all times, with no
exemptions, even when parking or reversing,
but taxi drivers may transport passengers
no taller than 1.35 metres (45) in the back

Certain professional bodies, including legal

which could affect motorists ability to drive

I spoke to the earth..

Can I walk by your side?
And take in your beauty,
Like a groom does his bride.
We took our first journey,
To a clearing so bare,
Earth whispered.
Ill show you, what used to grow there!
A forest so vast,
An ocean of green,
The great sound of nature,
So what does this mean?
Hundreds of miles
And millions of trees
A crucified forest,
Being killed by degrees.
All manner of wild life
Now search for a home,
Bereft of their sanctuary

Through caverns and caves

With stalagmites and stalactites
And pretty enclaves.

The beautiful galleons,

Clean air blew their sails

With under ground rivers,

So clean and so pure.
Exposed to such beauty,
I longed to see more.
Black mines lay empty,
Their minerals all used
It looks like a graveyard,
Dear earth Im confused.
Earth what is happening?
Your beautys now black!
She replied.
Man keeps taking, but never gives back.
We spoke of the oceans,
Not clean anymore.
Earth sighed.
I will show you, what they looked like before.
Dolphins were dancing,
To the songs of the whales.

The oceans pollution

Is worn like a shroud
The whales have stopped singing
And are crying out loud.
The glaciers are melting,
As the white bears roar. Why?
They live in a world,
Where their rules dont apply.
This is a poem,
Of words put to rhyme,
But mother earth is crying
To the hearts of mankind.

This is just a poem,

observations put to rhyme,
If by chance you hear her crying
She is talking to man kind.

now here we are in the second month of a

Latest Changes In Non-Resident Tax

2015
The new tax law which is effective
from 2015 was published in the Official
Spanish Gazette (BOE) on 28th November;
Law
28/2014.
This
law
contains
the latest changes affecting NonResidents Taxation.
Non-Residents who own property in
Spain need to complete and submit a NonResident Tax income form.
For owners not obtaining a rental income,
the tax rate has been reduced from
24.75% to 20% for people living in the EU
zone, Iceland and Norway. (24% for nonEU members) This tax rate will be further
reduced to 19% in 2016.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Deadline: 31st December 2015

This tax applies to deemed income
calculated by applying a coefficient of
1.1% or 2% to the catastral value. NonResident owners will see further reductions
in their tax bills as this catastral value
was reduced last year by most of the
councils such as Mazarrn. This council has
reduced the values again for 2015.
The same new tax rates will apply to NonResidents renting out property in Spain.

of caring for a loved one with long term

illness. Every Monday at the Cultural
Centre on Camposol B, we care for people
so that you, the carer can have some
much needed me time and be away from
the constant pressure of caring. We will
look after people suffering with problems
such as Alzheimers, Dementia, Stroke
Recovery and other long term problems
with qualified nurses and volunteer carers.

For any person not sure of what we do

then please feel free to call 660 442 845
or 626 673 4922 or email us at
info@forgetmenotmazarron.es.
We also have a new website at
www.forgetmenot.mazarron.es where
you can access information about us.

In the year 2014, owners living in the

EU zone were allowed to deduct all costs
directly connected to the property from their
rental incomes (ie. maintenance, home
insurance, rental insurance, council tax,
community fees, loan interest or other
allowable property expenses). This will
now also apply to Non-Resident owners
from Norway and Iceland.

registry fees, alterations made to the

property and taxes paid on purchase.

Deadline: 20th April, 20th July, 20th October

and 20th January 2015. (If the property
has been rented out and you are making
losses: deadline is between 1st and 20th
January 2015.)
Non-Resident
owners
selling property will no longer benefit
from the coefficients that used to apply
to the purchasing cost to increase its
historical value and consequently reduce
the capital gains tax payable.
The capital gain or loss on the property sale
will be now calculated by the difference
between your selling price, reduced by all
costs related to your sale, such as estate
agent fees, plusvalia tax and solicitor
fees and your purchasing cost, as stated on
your purchase deed, increased by adding
up all the costs related to the purchase,
such as solicitor fees, notary fees, land

We will be at the Table Top Sales on Fridays

on Camposol B in February and we look
forward to seeing you there and saying
hello.

The tax rate for Non-Resident Capital

Gains Tax when selling property has
been reduced from 21% to 20%. This
tax rate will be 19% in 2016. We remind
all Non-Resident vendors that they are
also subject to a 3% retention made by
the purchasers on the sale price when
selling property. The 3% retention is fully
refundable when the vendor declares they
have not made a gain on the sale.
There is an important exemption
which has been introduced for
Non-Residents when selling their
main home in Spain, as they will be
exempt from Capital Gains Tax when
reinvesting the gain in a new home in
Spain.
It is also important to remember that there
is a 50% tax exemption on Capital Gains
Tax on properties purchased between 12th
May 2012 and 31st December 2012. You
will only be liable to pay taxes on 50% of
your Capital Gain.
We advise you to contact a professional
who can provide you with an assessment
of your tax obligations and liabilities, thus
avoiding unnecessary fines and penalties/
embargoes being applied to your assets.
Always take professional advice and for
your peace of mind consider appointing
a fiscal representative who will take
responsibility for receiving and dealing
with any formal communication from the
Tax Office on your behalf within the given
timescales.
Prevention is always better than cure.

After eating several turkey dinners over the

festive season, I really fancied something
different and one Sunday, looking for
somewhere local to home, ended up in the
restaurant La Chara in Isla Plana village.
My dining companion wanted to share a
seafood paella and I have to confess that I
was a little reluctant, as the last time I had
this in Caravaca the overwhelming flavour
was the fish stock! However, this time I was
very pleasantly surprised. We were given
some nibbles to eat whilst waiting for the
rice to cook, which turned out to be slivers
of salted fish and egg. Service was good,
with our waiter keeping us updated on the
ETA of the rice, whilst recommending the
best wine to accompany it.
When the paella arrived, it was in a very

large pan and would easily have served

at least 3 people. There was a generous
amount of seafood of all types and
the flavour was subtle and extremely
delicious. The home made alioli was also
good, although I do take mine a bit more
picante as a true garlic lover, but overall
the meal was excellent.
We had not booked, but although the
restaurant was busy, we were given a table
straight away and service for drinks was
good. The smaller part of the restaurant
has a nice atmosphere and on warmer
days, tables are available outside the
restaurant, but I found it a bit too cold for
eating outside.
La Chara also serve a Menu del Da, with
4 courses for 9 plus IVA and an evening

Humanists of Murcia Last Walk

It is with great reluctance that it has to be
reported that the last walk in Almeria was
quite good. Around twenty walkers turned up
and had a three hour walk in the hills beside
Pulp; generally broad paths with a short
cross country bit and some scrambling into
the rambla and out of it. It was, in fact, the
best walk of the season so far. Lunch in Pulpi
was also quite acceptable.

Just so that Mike B and Mike L do not get too

big headed, there are a few things to bring
them down to earth, to mix metaphors:

being followed by two Welsh mountain goats

(one with a sore ass); next minute Mike Bs
head appears on the LHS on to top of a hill.
We got there in the end.

Directions
If one includes a fountain roundabout in the
directions, you should make sure that there is
water flowing in the fountain, otherwise, it is
just a roundabout.
Please ask Senor Pepa to put a sign up at the
side of his restaurante that we were supposed
to meet.
Mike L should look in his wing mirror when
driving off to the start of the walk to check if
16 German campervans are going to disrupt
the convoy. Note to Mike B. Saying we
should have stood in the road and held up our
hand is not helpful and could be misconstrued
(think about it).
Reconnoitre
When you do a reconnoitre, you should do it in
the direction you are going to walk it. At one
point, Mike L was up the RHS of the rambla,

On a cold Saturday morning in December,

with clear blue skies, a group of walkers
set out from Fuente de Capute towards
the Sierra de Ricote along the Camino de
Caballo. It was an interesting assembly
with several nationalities represented; the
majority being Spanish and English with a
sprinkling of Dutch, American and Scottish
ramblers. Our most memorable member of
the group was Lawrence, all the way from
Tennessee; a very short-legged, longhaired Daschund who had brought his
good friend Daniel along for the walk.

Are you a Martha or a Mary?

I was once asked this question by someone
whose opinion mattered to me. At the
time it bothered me because although
that person thought I had a streak of both
characters, I was in a dilemma as I felt I
was more of a Martha than I was a Mary.
Martha was someone who wanted to
make sure that everyone was well fed and
watered, comfortable and at home which
really sums me up to a tee, whilst Mary
was one who sat at Jesus feet and held
on to every word that Jesus said and this
is how I wanted to be. I felt I was missing
out.
Today however I read in Johns Gospel
11:22 about another side of Martha.
When her brother Lazarus had died, she

we had to leave the rambla and join a
narrow mountain footpath that climbed up
steeply through the woodland hugging the
southern slope of the mountain.

was the first of the two to meet Jesus and

she openly admits that she was convinced
that whatever He was to ask God for, it
would happen. What was in her mind we
dont know but it does show just how much
faith she had.
This encouraged me. We are all made
differently and the Lord gives us all
different talents. In fact Jesus himself
spent a great deal of His ministry serving
and healing others. Philippians 2:7

What we do need to keep in mind

however is that we place God first in
our lives.
Sometimes our family, for whatever
reason, take over our lives it seems and
its at these times that we find it difficult
to spend time alone in Gods presence, but
this is the very time when we need to draw

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The route took us along a rambla that had

recently been heavily flooded, with signs
of vegetation deposited by floodwater
hanging in the trees several metres
above the relatively dry river bed. As we
ascended up the rambla the route became
narrower and more enclosed by pine trees,
shrubby undergrowth and the high eroded

On reaching the saddle, El Puerto de

Cabello, we had a short rest (we had
ascended nearly 350 metres very quickly)
before tackling the final ascent, walking up
a fire break to one of the lower summits
of the mountain. Here we enjoyed a picnic
with wonderful 300 degree views of the
surrounding countryside.
The descent
to our starting point was a lot easier and
quicker and we arrived back at Fuente de
Capute after 5 hours of good exercise,
many calories burned off prior to the
Christmas excesses to come, excellent
company and with Lawrence still leading
the way. They breed these Tennesseans
mighty tough!!

Moratalla is a small town in Northwest Murcia

with around 10,000 inhabitants. It has quite
a unique and charming character with old
narrow, winding streets going up a steep
hillside that culminates in the remarkable
medieval castle, now restored to something
of its former glory. It is a town well worth
visiting, although we would recommend two
precautions! First, do not try to park in the
centre of the old town. You will quickly find
that you are in a maze of narrow one-way
streets. Far better in our view to park in
one of the side roads before you reach the
old core of the town and then walk the short
distance to it. Second, while walking in the
old town have a care for cars that do drive up
the narrow streets. There are many houses
perched up the hillside and access to them by
car can be quite a challenge for all involved!

Like so many small towns in this part of

Murcia, Moratalla can claim a long history
of human occupation. The hill on which the
old town and the castle are situated is the
site of the oldest settlement. However, this
goes way beyond medieval times back into
prehistory. By the time of the Iberians, who
inhabited much of the south and east of Spain
from around the 6th Century BC, there was a
strong defensive fortification of stone around
the settlement of that time and it is said that
one of the large blocks of stone used can now
be seen at the base of the northern side of the
medieval castles main tower. Remains of
the subsequent Roman occupation have
also been found here, although we then
have to wait until the Arab occupation of
the Iberian Peninsula for Moratallas real
entry into history. The hill had a settlement
which was defended by walls and a castle
within, which the local population would take
refuge in times of insecurity. The castle was
even the seat of a rebellion in the mid-12th
Century at the time of the Taifas, or small
separate emirates, following the collapse of
the Caliphate of Cordoba in the early 11th
Century.

The area around Moratalla, like other parts

of Murcia, came under full Christian control

from 1243 when the Treaty of Alcaraz saw the

region formally pass from Arab sovereignty to
the Crown of Castile. Until the final defeat
of the Moors in 1492, Moratalla was often
a very insecure part of the frontier lands
between Christian Castile and Arab Granada.
It was only from the 16th Century that the
town began to grow, recording a population
of a mere 300 in 1507.
The
origins
of the castle
are thought
to date back
to Arab times
in
the
9th
Century, but
what you see
today reflects
the rebuilding
which
took
place
after
the Christian
takeover
of
Murcia,
especially
in the 15th
Century. You
pass through
the entrance
gate
into
a large courtyard, or Patio de Armas. This
retains its original cobbles and you will see
the remains of a stone column, one part of
the Castle Commanders residence. Around
the Patio de Armas used to be the various
service buildings such as stables, the ovens,
storage areas and lodgings, none of which
have survived. Encircling the Patio de Armas
are the battlements and remains of five
towers, most of which have been heavily
restored. There is an internal walkway around
the whole perimeter of the castle which you
can follow, looking out over the countryside
below and passing these towers.

By far the most striking part of the

castle, however, is the keep, or Torre del
Homenaje. While there are some stones at
its base of Arab origin, the tower was well
built in the 15th Century by the military/
religious Order of Santiago, which perhaps
explains its continuing existence! Inside, it is
quite a remarkable structure with impressive
roof vaulting and arches. There are three
floors. The cellar was effectively a water
storage area into which rain was directed
through small canals from the outside roofs
and terraces. Above that and at the level
at which you enter the tower over a modern
walkway/bridge looking down into the cellar
area beneath, is the Sala de Armas. This is
a very high domed room with cross stone
buttresses supporting the roof. From this
room and through a small door in the right
hand corner (as you enter the room), there is
an incredible winding spiral staircase with 42

narrow, deep stone steps, which takes you up

to the Sala del Homenaje.
The Sala del Homenaje is very similar to
the room below very high, but with two
buttresses which go transversely across the
room rather than from a corner to the middle.
This room is where new Commanders of the
Castle were named and took oaths of loyalty.
The walls contain the coats of arms of four
such Commanders.
It is well worthwhile
making this ascent to the Sala del Homenaje,
although you do need to take some care on
the staircase.

From the Sala del Homenaje, there is another

staircase which leads to the tower battlements
and terrace area. If nothing else, this gives
some remarkable views over the surrounding
countryside. A bell used to be located on this
terrace and was used to warn those in the
surrounding area of impending danger such
as an invasion. Do take care, especially when
descending from the terrace not to hit your
head on the stonework above you!
As well as
ascending
from the Sala
de
Armas,
you can also
go down to
the
lower
area, where
there
are
two
distinct
levels. One is
like a terrace
around
the
edge of the
cellar
area,
with a small
space at the
very bottom
where there
is a central
stone support rising to the floor above.
When we visited the castle, it was open from
Tuesday to Saturday, but visits had to be
reserved first at the MoratallaTourist Office
(tel 968 730 208). The Tourist Office itself
is open 10am-2pm and 4pm-6.30pm Tuesday
to Friday (in summer the afternoon opening is
from 5pm-7.30pm). There is a small charge
for visits it cost us 2 each!

We arrived at the marzipan factory

between the rain showers and Don Mariano
Roch was the first to greet us. We went
with him to the workshop, leaving behind
the wet and cold streets to enjoy the
cosy warmth and tempting fragrance that
surrounded us inside. Mariano explained
the history of his family with marzipan
and their lives as confectioners. For four
generations the Moratalleros have had
their palates sweetened by his family who
are well renowned for their expertise and
craftsmanship. This particular confection
is currently the oldest made in Murcia the
ancient original recipes are continuously
passed from father to son.

confectionery products, each with its own

history, such as shortbread and almond
and coconut cordial. We are invited to look
at the old family recipe book that is still in
excellent condition - definitely a rare family
antiquity. With the careful handwriting of a
civil registrar, the expert hand that baked
marzipan in 1913 wrote these recipes that
have been jealously guarded ever since.
Annotations, corrections, measures which
most of us have never heard of, danced
through the yellowed pages of this little
gem weve been privileged to see.

Campsite, where the Gea-Andreu family

awaited us with a menu of delicacies.
We finished off with an afternoon of
celebration with a rousing chorus of Show
Me The Way To Go Home that our friends
June, Graham and Jim kindly brought
transcribed into Spanish, whilst wearing
the Christmas hats, beards and cloaks
provided by Ramona.
Outside, on the banks of the River Alhrabe
it was still raining heavily. A special thanks
to Juan and Mari and all our discoverers
for joining us for another season. We hope
to see you for the next one.

The surprises continued between enjoying

our sweet snacks and glasses of liquorcoffee, as Elena drew our attention to
a very old order book, where several
Moratalleros had placed orders; one by the
name of Paul whose wedding was being
paid for by his parents. The last surprise of
the day came from Mariano himself, as he
decorated two cakes without a tremor, with
unbelievable accuracy for an 82 year old - a
humble tribute to a tireless craftsman, who
has preserved the essence and value of
the gastronomic heritage of our marzipan,
without resorting to the industrialisation
that would have given huge profits.

Moratalla - Sunday December 14th

We woke at 6am to find it had rained
for at least an hour. The last trip of the
season Discovering Moratalla, was cut
short after a dry year and we were unable
to complete our programme in El Cerro
de Moratalla la Vieja as we had planned.
Our only consolation was that we could
not complain about the weather after four
years of great walking, but the tour on this
rainy morning would have to wait. We were
still able to finish the second part of the
programme Discovering Moratalla with
a visit to the marzipan factory Confitaria
Roche and as Christmas approached, we
enjoyed a variety of local products par
excellence.

We said goodbye to Confitaria Roch and

we were amazed at the time and affection
shown to us on a day when they were
very busy despatching orders. With the
sweetness of the marzipan lingering in
our mouths we left to enjoy the food at
La Puerta Restaurant at the Moratalla
The giving of this particular sweet at this
time of the year goes back to ancient
times, when there were pagan celebrations
of rites which have now been lost for
millennia. It was a product based on dried
fruit, honey, flour of various kinds, eggs
and other ingredients, to be eaten when
it was cold and an energy boost would
be highly appreciated. It also served to
strengthen relations between the clans.
We savoured the excellent and unique
marzipan stick and also enjoy a selection of

As expected, we have had our fair share of

cold weather this winter and of course the
inevitable sprinkling of snow. Despite this,
there has been very little rain and many
trees have suffered and farmers have
taken out acres of almond and apricot
trees recently.

The weather does seem to have had an

adverse affect on peoples health and there
is now a flu epidemic in the Murcia region.
63% of flu victims did not received flu jabs
and the Department of Health is calling all
residents who are vulnerable, disabled or
long term sick and those over 65 years
old to go to their local Health Centre to
be vaccinated. Symptoms include feeling
lethargic with aches and pains and a
sudden high temperature of more than
39C.

River Segura
This main river in Northwest Murcia is
under attack from exotic species of plants
and animals, contamination and the
invasion of its banks and is struggling to
survive. Native species, such as the eel
and barbos are under threat of extinction
whereas the common carp and the goldfish
are thriving. Plant life is also suffering,
particularly from the invasion of bamboo
and cane which stretch for kilometres
along the river banks.
It is proposed that local landowners and
the environmental boards work together to
restore the River Segura to its former glory.
The project, Life+ Ripisilvanatura,
led by the Segura Water Board, aims to
restore the banks of the river Segura
from the point it converges with the River
Mundo to the urban centre of Cieza: some
57 kilometres which encompass both
Moratalla and Calasparra
The other project, LIFE+ Segura
Riverlink, aims to remove the obstacles
on the riverbed.
Work will include demolishing a disused
weir and removing other obstacles which
prevent fish moving up and down the
rivers.
Cehegn Highlights In February

Free Nature Walks
These walks take place on the last Saturday
of each month. They are designed for
people of all ages who enjoy hiking at fairly
easy levels which makes them accesible
for the whole family. The tourist walks are
free and start at 9am. They are 4-9km
and take 2-3hrs.
Please contact the Tourist Office regarding
the nature walk in February.

If you are missing your regular favourite
Chinese food since the Chinese Restaurant
in Cehegin closed, why not visit a little gem
of a restaurant in Calasparra? Bar Yan
is an unimposing little restaurant on the
road in to Calasparra from Cehegin and
Caravaca. It is situated on the right hand
side before you reach the Correos. Su, the
proprietor and her staff are really friendly
and you will be pleasantly surprised at
the quality and price of the meals. Their
extensive menu covers Indian, Thai and
Chinese as well as Spanish Tapas and
even Egg & Chips! Why not call in to Bar
Yan on you way to or from the market
in Calasparra on a Friday? Their superb
Menu del Dia is only 6.50! It is probably
advisable to book for larger numbers as
this little bar is extremely popular with
both Spanish and Brits.
Calasparra Rice Michelin Star Winner
A dish using Calasparra Bomba Rice won
first prize at the Michelin Star Chefs
Competition in France recently. Many chefs
will only use Calasparra Rice because it
absorbs flavours very easily. Like many
other crops in the region, it has suffered
due to the drought and high temperatures
during the summer. Much of the Bomba

Rice is exported to countries such as the

US, Australia and of course the rest of
Europe.

Purposeful Patio Gardens by

Handscombe, practical gardener
author living in Spain for 25 years.

Dick
and

Patio Gardens have been popular in Spain

for over a thousand years and continue
to be so to this day. Many expatriates
incorporate the concept and best of their
features into the inner courtyards of town
houses, the back yard of village houses, the
back terraces of terraced houses or use the
concept for a series of several mini gardens
within their overall garden design and roof
top terraces.

palm as the colourful garden is beyond

the house, or the plant and artefactpacked patios where the patio is the
only open space the dwelling has.
Developing A Great Patio Garden Today
Having visited numerous patio gardens I
suggest that the essential ingredients are
as follows.
*

The evolution of Patio Gardens over the

centuries:
1. Patio Gardens were developed
by the Arabs within the walled
defensive houses they built. The
remains of some can still be seen,
especially in Cordoba, Seville,
Granada and Ubeda. All are within
Andalusia.

2. Cloister Gardens designed for

serenity, meditation and exercise
within monasteries and convents.
3. Inner Courtyard Gardens of
the palaces of the royalty and
aristocrats, both in the cities and
in the country; the best example
perhaps being the Alcazar in Seville.

4. Walled Kitchen Gardens designed

to produce the fruit and vegetables
for the adjacent castle, palace or
estate house.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

5. Inner
Courtyard
Gardens
developed behind village terraced
houses, in what was originally the
corral for the animals and poultry
with wonderful plants growing in
the well-fertilized soil or in pots on
newly tiled floors.
6. Small Walled Gardens built behind
or in front of modern terraced town
houses and maisonettes.
7. Small Courtyard Mini-Garden
incorporated as a special feature
within an overall garden design
for a larger open garden, or a
garden created as one of a series
of interconnecting mini-gardens for
seasonal interest and separation of
activities.
Patios can be of the Open Courtyard
type often kept generally bare except
for a few potted plants and a central

Soft Music - Light music of your

choice for relaxing. In Cordoba,
Guitar and Flamenco Music was
generally played quietly for effect.

Shade - Provided by trees in the

centre or one or more corners.
Popular trees being Palms, Ficus,
Fig, Olives, Jacaranda, Judas Tree,
Galan De Noche, and Cordylines
Some also had an architectural
Citrus Tree.

Subtle Lighting - A mix of spot

lights, wall lights and standard
lamps suitable for outside use on
the patio.

The Sound Of Water - From

fountains in the middle of ponds,
fountains against the wall and in
some cases cascades between both.

A Sun Blind - Most patios were

open to the elements; others had
a convenient motorized cover that
could be used for shelter from the
midday sun or storms.

The Family Pet - A cat, budgerigar,

fish in the pond or an ancient turtle
adds ambience to the patio.

Colourful and Perfumed Walls

Firstly, from window boxes and
climbers such as Bougainvillea,
Bignonias, Jasmine, Roses, Honey
Suckles, Passion Flower, Clematis
and Plumbago, but with none or
very few wall pots of Geraniums.
Secondly, from tasteful displays of
decorated plates, plaques, murals
and memorabilia.
Cool Evergreen Plants - Ferns,
Aspidistras,
Spider
Plants,
Spathiphyllum,
Pothos,
Bread
Plants, Mother-In-Laws Tongue,
were all popular and from their size
survived well in the semi-shade and
at times deep shade of the patios.
There were also Succulents, Cacti,
Bamboos and Bonsais of various
types.
Collections of Flowering Plants
In Pots - Bulbs such as Clivias,
Cyclamen, Freesias, Irises, Lilies
and Agapanthus.

Plants such as Kalanchoa, Begonias,

Fuchsias,
Pansies,
Busy
Lizzies,
Azaleas, some spectacular Hydrangeas
and a Water Lily in the pond.

old or new pots, agricultural and city
artefacts.
Comfortable

If you decide to purchase a house with

a patio-style terrace there are many
possibilities to enhance it, but before
you go into action consider:
a. To what extent will the patio be
important to your daily life style?
b. What will be the maximum and
minimum annual temperatures?
The walls of the patio may raise
the temperature just those few
degrees required to prevent winter
frost damage, but in the summer
the south facing wall can become
scorching rather than warm and
turn the courtyard into a furnace.
c. Where is the natural shade?
Recognize that the larger the
courtyard the lower the percentage
of shade and the greater exposure
to the sun in the summer and
swirling cold winds in the winter.
d. The levels of natural humidity and
where the water from the roof and
floor can run to. Decide whether
it can be usefully harnessed, or
whether you have a serious drainage
problem to deal with before you
tackle the patio layout.
Dick Handscombes series of gardening
and lifestyle boos are easily accessed and
purchased by doing a search for Dick
Handscombe on Amazone Books UK or ES.

Changes to UK Pensions and How They

Can Affect You?
Over the next few months we will be writing
a number of articles about pensions, to bring
you up to date with changes that can be
having a major effect on any pensions you
have in the UK.
In this months article we will address two
significant changes and pension charges.
First the changes:

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

55% Pensions Tax To Be Abolished

People are set to enjoy the freedom to pass on
their unused Money Purchase/Private Pension
to any nominated beneficiary when they die,
rather than having to pay the onerous 55%
tax charge that currently applies to pensions
passed on at death.
Under the new proposals, which are set to
take effect from April 2015, anyone who
dies before they turn 75 will be able to pass
on their remaining Money Purchase/Private
Pension to any nominated beneficiaries
completely free of tax, whether it is in a
drawdown account or untouched - provided it
is paid out in lump sums or taken through a
flexi access drawdown account.
The new proposals do not apply to Annuities
or Scheme Pensions. Anyone who dies with
a drawdown arrangement, or with untouched
pension funds at 75 or over, will also be able
to nominate a beneficiary to receive their
pension. The nominated beneficiary will be
able to access the pension funds flexibly, at
any age and pay tax at their marginal rate
of income tax. There will also be an option to
receive the pension as a lump sum payment,

First and Second Persons Singular

In an earlier article we took a step forward by
changing some of our important first person
verb forms into second person verb forms,
in other words to talk about you as well
as I. We have limited ourselves to just six
examples so far, because these are ones that
give us a chance to building more interesting
sentences by combining them with the
infinitive or other verbs to express our needs,
desire, intentions and obligations:
quieres (you want)
vas a (you are going to)
necesitas (you need)
puedes (you can)
tienes que (you have to)
te gusta (you like).
We can now make statements about the
person we are addressing, for example Vas
a aprender mucho espaol con Jane
(Youre going to learn a lot of Spanish with
Jane - just thought Id slip that one in), or
Puedes dormir ms tarde (You can
sleep later - Ill leave you to invent your own
context for that one).
We could also give someone information in
the negative, for example No tienes que
volver maana (You dont have to go back
(or come back) tomorrow.)
Perhaps the second person is used most
frequently however to form questions. We
can think of lots, using the words we have
learnt so far. Here are some questions which
perhaps you would like to answer yourself.
You can send me the answers if you wish.

subject to a tax charge of 45%. The new

proposals continue a major reshaping of
the retirement landscape that began in the
2014 Budget, which, among other measures,
removed the requirement to buy an Annuity.
With pensions saving clearly now a major
focus for politicians and thus in a state
of some flux, it is well worth considering
seeking expert advice on your individual
circumstances.
2. New Flexibility On Pension Lump Sums
As mentioned above, from April this year,
you will not have to buy an Annuity when
you want to access your pension. The tax
rules are to be changed to allow individuals
aged 55 and above to access their Money
Purchase/Private Pensions as they wish from
April 2015. As part of the pension changes,
which was published in mid-October, the
government is proposing to change the rules
on taking pensions as a lump sum with the
effect that people will be able to take a series
of lump sums instead of only one.
Under the current rules, people who want to
take their pension as a lump sum would take
25% of their pension pot free of tax and then
place the other 75% in a drawdown account.
Any money they take out of their drawdown
account will then be taxed at their marginal
rate.
Under the new tax rules, individuals will have
the ability to take a series of lump sums
from their pension fund, with 25% of each
payment then free of tax and 75% taxed at
their marginal rate, without actually having to
enter into a drawdown policy.
People who have worked hard and saved all
their lives should be free to choose what they

do with their money, said Chancellor of the

Exchequer George Osborne, as these latest
changes to the pensions saving landscape
were announced. For some people, an
Annuity will be the right choice, whereas
others might want to take their whole tax-free
lump sum and convert the rest to drawdown.
Reviewing Charges On Existing UK
Pensions
A change in pension rules and legislation has
reduced the charges associated with running
pension plans in recent years, but many
providers have not passed these savings on.
We are seeing the situation where if charges
are high and growth small, the value of
pension pots is actually decreasing.
An IFA will carry out a Pension Review on
your existing pensions, which will enable
you to compare pensions across the whole
market and make sure the one you have is
right for you. If it is not, they can undertake
a pension transfer to a scheme with lower
charges and perhaps better performance.
Simply by reducing annual charges, more of
your pension money remains intact, giving
more scope for growth. It is important to
remember the other key factor, which is fund
performance, but the lowest possible annual
charges can only be a good thing.

Necesitas tomar medicamentos?
Quieres aprender ms sobre Espaa?
Vas a visitar a tu familia este verano?
Tienes que volver a trabajar?
Puedes salir esta noche?
Te gusta comer verduras?
I think well make a little digression at this
point, just in case some of you are confused.
The second person or you form that I have
just demonstrated, is actually a form we use
when we are being friendly or familiar with the
person we are addressing. I prefer to teach
this form first so that students can address
each other in a friendly way and to open up
the possibility of chatting to neighbours or
getting a bit further in a conversation than
ordering a beer.
However, a lot of people learn a slightly
different form first, that is the more formal
way of addressing you. The actual words
for you (which dont necessarily come into
the sentence) are t when we are being
familiar and usted when we are being more
formal. I try to encourage people not to get
over-anxious about when they should use
these forms. In the area of Spain I used to
live everyone used the t form (that is, as I
have taught you above) all the time, which is
perhaps why Im biased in its favour. However,
Ive noticed that in the Murcia region, or
perhaps just on the coast where there are a
lot of visitors and strangers, its common to
be approached using the usted form (which
I am going to explain now) although the t
form can be switched to quite easily without

So, now for the good news. To change from

more familiar to more formal, all we have to
do is remove the letter s from the first person
verb.
Therefore, here are our sentences
again expressed more formally:
Necesita tomar medicamentos?
Quiere aprender ms sobre Espaa?
Va a visitar a su familia este verano?
Tiene que volver a trabajar?
Puede salir esta noche?
And the one that behaves differently:
Le gusta comer verduras?
There isnt a huge amount more to it than
that, although we will come back to this later
on in more detail. In the meantime, enjoy
interrogating those around you.

logical order. We keep channel lists for
many boxes and can always perform a
rescan for you if needed.

TV News
Those of you with Manhattan Recording
Boxes may have seen my piece about the
software upgrades available, written a few
months ago when version 1.2.6 was issued
well there is a new issue - 1.4.0 which, in
the words of Manhattan reads; This update
corrects an intermittent issue that can cause
the volume to change unexpectedly when
using the Mute and Live Pause functions. It is
suitable for both the Plaza HDR-S 320GB and
500GB models.

Two fairly recent channels ITV ENCORE and

ITV BEE are available, but many boxes have
not got them listed.

All these updates are quite minor and will not

affect the overall box performance, but it is
worth keeping your box up to date (full details/
instructions on the Manhattan website), or
we can install it for you for a nominal fee
of 5 providing you wait until we are in
your area. Nearly all digibox manufacturers
issue software updates for their boxes and
it is worth checking your manufacturers
website now and again and performing the
updates. I follow Manhattan because it is the
brand of boxes we recommend and sell.
Some boxes do upgrade the software from the
satellite system or the Internet (if connected)
all official SKY boxes and HUMAX boxes do
this, but I have known even these to miss
an update and be outdated, requiring manual
procedures. All official SKY and FREESAT
boxes will update any changes to the
channel listings. Any other boxes will
require occasional channel reloading either
by scanning the satellite signal availability
list, or from a preset list obtained from
various sources on the Internet. Performing
a channel scan will pick up all the available
channels, but normally place them in an odd
order in the channel listings, whereas a list

the Internet being overloaded every family
was on SKYPE or WHATSAP and the systems
could just not handle it. It was not a huge
issue and soon settled back, but we must
accept the Spanish Internet system is not
100% 1st world. It is getting better almost
weekly, but it does get overloaded, especially
when you are out in the country trying to
feed into the mains to get out of Spain. No
matter what supplier you use, it will have to
at some point feed into the National Grid to
get around the world.
Finally, a word to all potential new

The spring house selling/buying season

Unfortunately I must start this article

by letting everyone know that some our
Christmas Decorations were stolen on
Christmas Eve. Whoever did this, I hope
you feel very happy with the pathetic stash
you STOLE from a group of people who only
want to improve our environment.
The monthly group meeting held on 12th
January was attended by 35 people, which is
a sharp rise based on previous meetings. The
following projects were discussed and action
taken:

3. At the top of D11 the curb stones have

been smashed and new stones will be
laid.
4. Mud is to be moved from D11 (to
be chased up), but meanwhile the
Council road sweeper has cleared a
lot of this mud.

8. The central reservation on the dual

carriageway is being sprayed because
of weeds which will then be taken
away.
9. D Sector have purchased a new
vehicle, after the previous one was
destroyed in the gota fria. The charge
of hiring the van and trailer is 15.

5. Antonia is to start from D26 and will

weed the whole of the perimeter of D
Sector.

The buckateers continue with their good

work, in all weathers and we would like to thank
everyone who donates to this worthwhile cause.

1. Moving concrete blocks to D25 and

D24 to stop dumping of rubbish.

6. A party will be clearing the exposed

black pipes in the dual carriageway.

The next D Sector meeting will be on February

2nd at 4pm in The Club House.

2. Skips are still required around the

sector and request is to be made to
Ismael to get these delivered as soon

7. After the damage caused by the gota

fria, more gravel will be laid on the
petanca courts on D10 and D20.

At the meeting on Thursday 8th January,

the ladies enjoyed a Flower Arranging

at St Nicholas Church Flower Festival last
year. Lynn is a fully trained Florist who ran
her own business in the UK. Lynn gave a
very interesting talk full of hints and tips on
how to make cut flowers last longer in the
home. She also demonstrated how to make 3
beautiful bouquets which we raffled off at the
close of the afternoon. It all looked so simple
watching! Karen had compiled a challenging
quiz based on flowers of course. We were
all trying to see Jenny Wrights answers! Gill

with chocolates and a bottle of wine. A lovely
start to the year.

Europe will open in Mazarrn. This is perhaps
the most ambitious local project as it is only
the second in the world after one opened
earlier this year in Japan.
Four giant tanks with a total capacity of seven
million litres of water (the largest of which is
22 feet in diameter and up to three and a half
million litres) will be host on average to 40
tuna which will lay eggs during the months of
June and July initially and then there will be
a longer season thanks to a work of varying
conditions of light and temperature. The
eggs will be taken to the plant of Mariculture,
Mazarrn until they reach the juvenile tunas
size, which usually occurs within 40 days.
From there the juveniles are taken to sea
cages for fattening prior to commercial use.
Students Of Architecture
About 200 students from eight subjects in
the degree of Architecture at the Polytechnic
University of Cartagena (UPCT) have been
carrying out projects in various locations in
Mazarrn within the ArquitecturaON project.
ArquitecturaON is a teaching innovation
project coordinated by Professor Marcos Ros
and is intended for students in third, fourth
and fifth grade of Architecture.
Youtube and 10 Short Sample Participants
in the 1st Film Competition - Survival
The competition was held in Mazarrn, in midDecember, recording high participation.
Film buffs and those who could not attend
the closing ceremony of the First Ever Film
Survival organized in Mazarrn, now have the
opportunity to watch the participants through
a short youtube channel created by the IT
department of the City of Mazarrn.

Ten teams from Mazarrn, Cartagena, Murcia
and Almeria had less than 48 hours to shoot a
short film after learning what the subject was.
For this first competition it was a meat pie.

The competition was won by the Short

Change group for their short Consequences.
The crew, from Murcia, won 1000 and 2nd
prize, worth 500, went to the team The
Goonies and their Moments. The special
award for the use of the site was for A Short
Suit Me and their film Default. There were
also special mentions and delivery of diplomas
for best screenplay, editing, use of the
soundtrack, stills and best male and female
performances.
Municipal Office Begins To Receive
The First Application for Reduced
Fees
For
Water
And
Waste
To process applications it is necessary to
provide proof of registration, ID, the last bill,
income statement and authorization over the
last 16 years. The deadline for the citizens of
Mazarrn requesting exemption from payment
for garbage disposal and the reduction of 50%
for the water supply and sewerage was last
October. Shops, bars, restaurants and 3 star
hotels are automatically subject to a 42%
reduction, which affects 500 businesses in the
municipality.
The application must be filed in response to an
income limit. As an example, those families of
three members or more who do not earn more
than 14,164 a year.
Mazarrn
and
Local
Charitable
Associations
32,000 has been awarded to Caritas,
New Direction, ASPADEM, GomaD and the
Pensioners Club.
New Direction, GOmaD and Caritas were
allocated the money to help families with
fewer resources in the municipality, which
usually means for food and paying bills.
ASPADEM invest their money towards the
costs of maintaining the heated pool La
Canada, often used by children attending the
Early Intervention Service. The Pensioners
Club will use the money for various cultural
activities organized by the club throughout the
year.
Mayors Achievements During 2014
Francisco Garcia welcomed in the New Year
hoping that all of Mazarrn will enjoy the best
welfare during 2015.

The following are some of the achievements:

* The opening of school canteens in the
months of July and August, thanks to
the collaboration of local associations
Caritas, Red Cross, New Direction and
Friends of Nature and Bemal. 63
children benefitted from this service,
which aimed to alleviate the difficult
economic situation in some families.
* During the summer about 25,000 was
invested in the repair of schools and
included the opening of the Centre for
Child Care in Mazarrn, last November.
* 6 blue flags were awarded for the
quality of the municipalitys beaches,
which included one Ecoplaya flag in
Castellar and Mazarrn Beach was
voted one of the most accessible of
Spain.
* Mazarrn continued to receive major
sports events such as the National
Underwater Photography and Video
Championships and Spains Cycling
Championships including the 35th
Vuelta a Murcia which will have
Mazarrn as a point of departure.
Cruz Roja
The Mayor, Francisco Garcia, and the
president of Cruz Roja, Murcia, Aurelio Luna,
have renewed the agreement existing on the
humanitarian institution which will enable
the continuation to develop Telecare Service
Homecare in Mazarron. During 2014, a total
of 110 people have benefited directly from
this municipal service. This care covers
emergencies and allows patients to stay in
touch with Cruz Roja day and night 365 days a
year. The system has a very simple operation
terminal connected to the telephone line and
a pendant with a button that the user must
carry at all times whilst in the house. In an
emergency at home and with the push of the
button, they are contacted to Cruz Roja from
any room in the house without having to reach
a phone and dial a number.
The growing tendency to isolation of our
seniors is the fundamental reason why Cruz
Roja has launched several programmes to
support older people so that they can remain
in their usual environment.

The 3rd Anniversary of our Maintenance

We thank everyone who has joined the

Almond Flower Month February

We are well on our way through the cold
winter months and soon nature will give us
the amazing gift of almond trees in flower.
There are also many gifts that are offered to
us by cruise companies for these days. Just
a taste:

deals possible.
The famous Aguilas Carnival is soon here
the date is Sunday, February 15th (slight
change here from our last article) and
Dragontours will be running a tour, including
a reserved seat for this amazing parade, so
come along and sign up, you will be happy

St Valentines Day 14th February

This is a special time of the year when you
can express your love to your best friend
without feeling it is too much or wrong.
Valentine cards are a way to show your
love for someone and many cards say
more than just I love you. They can put
into words exactly how you feel, but words
that you cannot normally say.

Its because all of this time,

I read your mind and you read mine.
Weve known each other well for ages,
And our life is full of unread pages.
Youre family to me, a sister, a brother,
And yet theres so much to discover.

Whatever circumstance you cannot bear,

Just turn to me and you will find me
there.

For You, My Friend

Thoughts of affection fill my mind
When Valentines Day is near.
I think about my closest friends;
Those who are most dear.
And on that special Valentine list,
Youre at the top, my friend.
I love you and I know for sure,
Our friendship will never end!
For You, My Friend
Always by my side,
no matter how near or far,
Willing to help and ready to lend an ear.
You are someone I can count on
Your friendship I hold most dear.

Here are some poems written especially

for St Valentines Day:

I wish I could just take you in my arms

And all your pain could melt into my
chest,
But there is solace in a loving friend
And comfort in what I dont have to say.

Friendship
Weve known each other for so many
years.
There have been laughs and of course
tears.
You cheered me up, you made me doubt,
But thats what friendship is about.
Weve known each other for so long,
But thats not why we get along.

Just as a wave is lifted by the shore,

Then breaks across the slowly rising sand,
So as I watch you weep, my feelings pour
Across the wash of what I understand.

If you are looking for somewhere to take

your loved one this St Valentines Night,
there are some beautiful restaurants
including Elliots, Chez Zoe, Big Gs,
and Caf Buenavista advertising in
this months Costa Clida Chronicle
offering superb, romantic meals. Some
restaurants such as La Mariposa in Gebas
and Restaurante Amapola in Bolnuevo
offer free transport for groups of 8 or more
people and some restaurants, including
Le Carrousel in Puerto de Mazarrn and
Restaurante Castillo del Pinar at Perin
are offering special St Valentines meals
over the whole weekend of 13th 15th
February.

Caixa Bank buys out Barclays in Spain

High-Street bank La Caixa has bought out the
Spanish arm of UK firm Barclays for the sum
of 820 million. This means Caixa Bank will
take over the 262 branches of Barclays and
its 555,000 customers in Spain. Barclay Card
and Barclays Investment Banking will remain
in the hands of the British-based arm of the
company. Caixa Bank, whose CEO is Isidre
Fain, intends to carry out a restructure
of the payroll, of 2,400 employees. It is not
known whether this will mean redundancies
or relocations, or merely re-ordering of
teams and roles.

Customers will not notice any changes, but

will now be able to use the 9,600 La Caixa
cash points without paying commission.

Brcenas was taken into custody at Madrids

Soto del Real prison on June 27th 2013
in connection with the Grtel bribery and
corruption racket involving politicians and
company bosses, but so far is the only one
who has ended up behind bars. 43 people,
including PP politicians and business owners
have been charged, but only 42 will face
trial because Mara del Mar Rodrguez Alonso
has been found dead in a Bilbao hotel in a
suspected suicide.

Empty Village Offers Cut-Price Home

Rent
A Xesta, a hamlet which belongs to the
larger village of A Lama, has 176 houses,
but only 50 residents. 27 of the properties
stand empty all year round and the rest are
only weekend or summer homes. Only two
children are registered on the padrn and
there are no births.

The comfortably-sized stone houses in this

picturesque location are up for rent for just
100 a month. Owners, mainly younger
adults who live elsewhere and have inherited
the properties from parents or grandparents,
are keen to keep the village from crumbling
and becoming deserted. Tenants will be
required to pay for maintenance works and
certain cosmetic renovations may be needed
as many have not been lived in for 15 or 20
years, but very few need structural repairs.
Most have very large allotments or even
small farms attached.
Duke and Duchess Of Palma Sell Their
Barcelona Mansion For 6m To Pay
Fines
King Felipe VIs younger sister, the Infanta
Cristina and her husband Iaki Urdangarn
have sold their mansion in Pedralbes,
Barcelona, to pay off their civil liabilities in
connection with the money-laundering and
public fund embezzlement charges they are
both facing.
The property was embargoed by judge Jos
Castro in order to guarantee payment of the
6.1 million fine which may be faced jointly
by Urdangarn for his role in the racket which
centred on the Nos Institute, a sports and
cultural non-profit-making entity he co-ran
with Diego Torres, but which turned out to
be a lucrative business. Judge Castro has
also embargoed half of Urdangarns other
properties, as the other 50% belongs to
the Infanta, which include three residential

Brcenas Leaves Prison
Former treasurer of the PP, Luis Brcenas, is
out of jail after friends and family members
found the 200,000 bail release applied by
the National Court. Brcenas, who is reputed
to have around 30 million in bank accounts
around the world, is unable to access his
funds as they have been frozen by Judge
Pablo Ruz.

Brcenas was allowed home, but he is

required to report to the court every Monday,
Wednesday and Friday, is not allowed to
leave the country and the judge has retained
his passport. Brcenas freedom may be
short-lived, however, since he is facing one
of the stiffest sentences of all those accused
in the Grtel case. Ringleader Francisco
Correa is up against the longest sentence, of
110 years and Brcenas could face between
42 and 62 years. In practice, the maximum
custodial term which can be served in Spain
is 30 years.
Former IRA Members Arrested On
Spanish Costas
Seven people have been arrested on the
Spanish Costas and islands in a moneylaundering and smuggling racket led by
two former members of the IRA after police
raided 11 homes in Lanzarote, Las Palmas,
Mlaga, San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia) and
Orihuela Costa and San Miguel de Salinas
near Alicante.
Leonard Hardy and his wife Donna Maguire,
both former members of the IRA and said
to be the ringleaders of the smuggling gang,
were arrested in a Lanzarote hotel just
before New Year. A Northern Irish couple
were detained at their home in San Pedro
del Pinatar (Murcia), although the wife was
released with charges, since she could not
be remanded in custody as she is heavily
pregnant.
According to police, the gang used the
proceeds of smuggled cigarettes and alcohol
to buy property on
the
Costa

and
Costa

setting up dormant
front companies to
launder the cash. They
estimate that the gang
earned up to 10.5

goods.
Paternity Suit By
King Juan Carlos
Illegitimate
Daughter
A woman who claims

she is the illegitimate daughter of the

abdicated King Juan Carlos I has had her
case accepted by the Supreme Court.
Belgian national Ingrid Sartiau says she
has DNA evidence to show that she and
Barcelona resident Alberto Sol Jimnez
share the same father.
Albertos paternity suit against the former
King has not been admitted, but his own DNA
sample, he claims, shows a 99% reliability
and is a match for Juan Carlos I. Both the
plaintiffs say their mothers told them they
had had flings with the Monarch, who was
known to have sown his wild oats in his
younger days, leading to a breakdown of his
still-current marriage to Queen Sofa.
If Albertos paternity claim were to be found in
his favour, the implications would be far more
earth-shattering for the Royal family than if
Ingrid turned out to be the Kings daughter.
Alberto is older than Felipe VI, meaning the
illegitimate son would automatically become
King of Spain and Felipe VI would be forced
off the throne. This would not be the case
with Ingrid because the amendment to the
Spanish Constitution allowing the eldest
daughter to be immediate heir to the throne
was not passed until after Princess Leonor
was born, to protect her in case she later
had a baby brother, or to ensure there was
indeed an heir if her parents only had girls,
as has been the case.
Costa
Del
Sol
Branch
Of
Saint
Petersburgs State Art Museum To Open
An outpost of the Russian State Museum in
Saint Petersburg is due to open in Mlaga
just two days before the red tape is cut on
the Costa del Sol branch of Paris Centre
Pompidou in March.
Five centuries of Russian art from Mediaeval
icons through to surrealist painters such
as Kandinsky, Chagall and Malevich will be
on display in the old Tabacalera building,
with three different exhibitions a year. The
contract with the original State Museum of
Russian Art, led by director-general Vladimir
Gusev, runs for 10 years, but will hopefully be
renewed in 2025. To celebrate the gallerys
grand opening, the first exhibition will be of
Russian art from the 15th to 20th century
and feature 100 or so works from the Middle
Ages through to the Soviet era, with a sample
selection of paintings by Wassily Kandinsky,
Alexey Venetsianov, Carl Brulov, Alexander
Ivanov, Isaak Levitan, Vassily Vereschagin,
Ilja Repin, Peter Konchalovsky, Tatlin,
Olga Rosanova, Marc Chagall, Alexander
Rodchenko, Nathan Altman, Pvel Filonov,
Kazimir Malevitch and Alexander Deineka.
A temporary exhibition running from
March to September this year will be on
Sergei Diaghilev, said to be the founder
of the Russian Ballet and a great friend
of Mlaga-born surrealist painter Pablo
Picasso, featuring stage designs, sculptures
and figurines as well as paintings by Bakst,
Vrubel, Golovin, Goncharova, Levitan and
Larionov.
The second and final temporary exhibition of
the year, also running concurrently with the
main display of 15th-20th century painting,
will be entirely dedicated to the complex
and unjustly forgotten artist Pavel Filonov
(1883-1941).

The SAMM IOM GROUP is alive and well and

looking for new members.

We have access to all the facilities CAR and

SAMM have to offer, sailing from the jetty,
enjoying the caf/bar, which serves excellent
tapas and drinks at very reasonable prices
and using the SAMM 4.5 metre support Rib
for laying our race course and recovering
boats that sometimes decide to go off on a
jolly around the Mar Menor. Whilst we are
enjoying our sailing, our wives can relax on
the superb beach and watch, or get a coffee
or something stronger in CAR or the local
beach bar.

The International One Metre Sailing

Group is made up of people who see IOM
Boat Sailing as a way to practise their
building, sailing and racing skills. The majority
of members remain firmly in SAMM and its
wonderful international facility at CAR, the
excellent Spanish Centre of Sports Excellence,
right on the beach in Los Alczares. A new
democratic Committee has been formed and
continues to organise RC racing and sailing.
All RC sailors of every nationality are welcome
to come and join in the fun with our group.

these excellent boats, but other classes are

boats if that takes your fancy.

Shoestring Pursuit Race

As there was no official SAMM race after
the SAMM meeting on 12th November, the
Shoestring Group, the dingy boat share
group within SAMM, ran a pursuit race for
its members and two guest boats; the Martin
crewed by Tony Jones and Neil Coates and
Rosetta crewed and owned by Mick Burgess.

and Tres overhauled Rosetta and the Martin

in their battle for 2nd place which continued
until 2 minutes from the end when Dos, who
held a slight lead, made a tactical error at the
rounding of the last buoy which enabled Tres
to take 2nd place by a margin of 15 seconds.
The Martin came in 4th followed by Rosetta in
5th place.

This bought the number of competing boats to

five, the others being Shoestring Uno, crewed
by Brian Murray, Frits Baer and Eric Bronham,
Shoestring Dos, crewed by Jack Moss and
Vernon OBryne and Shoestring Tres, crewed
by Ingo Wilson and Jeff Beadle.

The Group thanked Bob Miles for manning the

SAMM support Rib to enable the race to take
place.

The race, set as a triangular course, started

at 2.30pm, from the end of the jetty at CAR,
Los Najeros, for 90 minutes in a wind speed
of 9-10 knots
from the S-SSW.
Rosetta was first
to start followed 5

by Uno, then 7

Final SAMM Race Day Washed Out

To the great disappointment of the many
competitors, the final day of the 2014 SAMM
Autumn Series on November 30th, had to
be cancelled due to heavy rain over the Mar
Menor.
The series positions were therefore based on
the best 8 results from the 11 races that were
run, resulting in a well deserved win for the
Laser 2000 Shoestring Dos with 16.75 points,
2nd the other Laser 2000 Shoestring Tres with
24.75 points with the Catamaran Hamour
taking 3rd place honours with 30.25 points.
The next three places were very close behind
with the Laser 13 Shoestring Quatro 4th on 31
points, the Faversham 14, 5th on 32.5 points
and the Balaton Conny 6th on 35.75 points.
The season had been a great success with 9 or
10 boats from the total fleet of 11 competing
in almost every race. All top boats had been
sailed by various crews during the season as
all were owned by boat share groups within
SAMM.
The SAMM Special Award was presented
to Ernie Foster, whose outboard engine skills
and knowledge have given us a trouble-free
year with the support Rib. Before being given

Radio controlled sailing comes to Lo

Pagan.
The coming of the New Year has brought a
new activity to Lo Pagan in the Provence of
Murcia. The new Radio Controlled Mar Menor
Sailing Group has set up its home in the newly
built water sports centre. The centre was
provided by the San Pedro Ayuntamiento and
is adjacent to the well known Lo Pagan Marina
and the fishing quay. The water sports centre
overlooks the Mar Menor and boasts what
must be the one of the finest facilities in the
Provence. It facilitates Water Polo, Kayaking,
Dragon Boat Racing and now Radio Controlled
Sailing has also been added to that list. The
facility also has a state of the art gym, so If
you should feel the need to boost your own
physical fitness after the festive indulgencies,
it is very well equipped.

Mazarrn started 2015 well with two away

victories at CD Lumbreras and Yeclano
Deportivo and moved up to 5th place in
the league with an excellent chance of
achieving an end of season play-off spot. It
is perhaps significant that some of their best
performances this season have been away
from home where most teams have excellent
synthetic pitches which allow Mazarrn
to play a better passing game than on the
bumpy surface at the Estadio Municipal in
Mazarrn.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Tolo continued his excellent goal scoring

record and his hat trick at Yeclano was his
7th in five games and his 15th of the season,
which made him the leading scorer in the
division, three goals ahead of his nearest
rivals. With recent acquisitions Monty and
Manu supporting the consistent Liders in
midfield and Mateo returning to boost the
defence the team has a solid look about it
with, hopefully, enough strength in depth to
cover the numerous injuries and suspensions
the squad have suffered in recent weeks.
Mazarrns home games are normally
played on Sundays with varying kick off
times. Admission is just 4 with juveniles
free. Los Amigos de Mazarrn FC organise
a supporters coach to most away games;
tickets are 8 for members and 10 for nonmembers. Details of all games are normally
not announced until the Wednesday before
the weekend on which the game is to be
played and advertised in the local media,

Our December competition was early in the

month due to the Christmas break and it was
La Peraleja that Fuente Old Guard travelled
to on 11th. We are always given a warm
welcome by the friendly staff at this course
and it was a good start for DAVE BARRETTS
first game as Captain for 2014/2015. Jim
Kinniburgh stood down as Captain, but was
still able to present 500 to his nominated
charity, with the compliments of Fuente
Old Guard, to the ASPADEN charity for
handicapped children.

Dave May was in First Place in Division Three

with 29 points, while Allen Evans came a
close Second with 28 points.
Neil also won both Nearest The Pin prizes,
while Barry Martin scooped the prize pot for
the Twos Money.

The Overall Winner on the day was Chris

Andrews with 32 points, which also gave him
top spot in Division One. Close behind with
31 points was Neil MacFarlane to take Second
Place overall in Division One.
Division Two was won by Maurice Nafzger
with 30 points, just ahead of Richard Pearce
as Runner-Up scoring 28 points.

Our next game is at Aguilon on February 26th.

If anyone would like to join FOGGS or just
play as a guest, please contact Dave on 868
082 013.

competitive, but friendly spirit. If you are
group of Lady Golfers who would like to be

It was recently agreed to hold the CGA
Summer Ball on 19th June at a venue yet to
be decided. There will also be a Mixed Golf
Competition in May followed by a BBQ.

Fundraisers
extraordinaire
LAGS
(Los
Amigos Golf Society) Mazarrn kicked
off their 2015 season at Paraleja Golf Resort
on 6th January, hoping to eclipse last years
fantastic charitable efforts.
Over the course of the last 7 years and thanks
to the generosity of the societys sponsors,
LAGS have raised in excess of 18,000, a
level unparalleled in the region. The main
recipient has been the ASPADEM School in
Mazarrn; a school for children and young
adults with disabilities. LAGS have been able
to provide financial support, enabling the
school to purchase badly needed equipment
and services to enhance the development of
their pupils.

LAGS have also supported GOmaD (to

purchase school books for disadvantaged
children in Mazarrn), Murcia Dance, Escuela
de Futbol de Mazarrn, Camposol Children (to
help fund the development of a playground
and sports facilities) and many other
organisations.
On a bright, sunny, but chilly January
morning, 35 players teed off from the 1st and
10th tees in what turned out to be extremely
difficult conditions. This was clearly a day
suited to players able to pick the ball cleanly
off bare lies. Sadly not all of our members
possess these skills so point scoring remained
difficult (in fact impossible for many).

Our Presentation Evening at the Black

Bull, Camposol was yet again a terrific night
out. The kitchen put on the usual fantastic
food for us and with Lisa B providing the
music, a good night was had by all.

total salary before you accumulated enough

wealth to buy the average property. However,
post crisis, by 2014 and due to the collapse
of house prices, it would now take just 7.8
years.

We reported a slow-down of declining prices

in Murcia in the early part of 2014 and
throughout the remainder of the year this
gradually evolved into a slight increase by the
final quarter; the cumulative result for the
year 2014 being a net 0%.

The Forecast for 2015 in the New

Construction Sector Positive, But Not
Great!
After contracting 6.5% in 2014, Spanish
residential construction output will grow
by 5% this year according to forecasts by
Euroconstruct, a network of 19 European
research institutes.

Also included in the report is the Index

of Real Estate Effort - a very revealing
and interesting piece of information which
defines the number of years of salary the
average home buyer would need in order
to buy a home outright. During the boom
years, it would take 13.6 years (in 2007) of

Despite offering the most optimistic forecast

in years, Euroconstruct warn that the benefits
of rising activity in the construction sector will
take time to filter through to consumers and
that improvements are still highly localised,
not benefiting the whole country equally. This
means a two-speed recovery for the Spanish

Review of 2014 Performance

As soon as possible after New Year, I like
to review the business performance for
OwnersAway Rentals, with the aim of
analysing our rental performance and how
we performed as a business. This helps me
to identify areas for improvement and decide
how to move the business forward.
Here are the key facts and figures for
2014:

skewed towards Spanish rentals;

one of the benefits of speaking the
language with a degree of fluency.
We offer a high standard of customer
service which comes as a pleasant
surprise to our Spanish guests and
every aspect from booking enquiry to
resolving problems can be dealt with
for them in Spanish.

We closed the year with turnover

38% up on 2013; a tremendous
achievement in the current economic
climate and a testament to the hard
work of all my staff, from office-based
to resort reps to cleaners. It also
reflects the huge variety of work we
now do for our owners, sorting out
every aspect of their Spanish lives,
from maintaining properties to paying
their parking fines!
Our client base in 2014 was heavily

We saw a drop in clients coming from

the UK, as continuing issues with
flights and the economy meant that
people opted for staycations.

Winter rentals for 2014-2015 are

already up on 2013 levels, with
Northern European clients coming
over to escape the colder Winters in
their home countries.

UK clients left it later than normal to

book and our Spanish friends finally
got the idea that they need to give us

property market.
Weak consumer demand and over supply
will continue to weigh down on the market
and the Spanish construction sector will
continue to build at levels way below the
European average - a sign that its problems
still remain. They also point out that more
private investment is needed.
The
recovery
in
residential
property
transactions last year was not as good as it
seemed, argue Euroconstruct, since large
investment funds were responsible for
many of the purchases, implying continued
weakness of indigenous private demand.

more than one days notice to get the

best pick of villas in August!

Many of our clients are now in their 4th

or 5th year of repeat vacations with us,
which again proves that we must be
doing something right. Already many
of these clients have booked for 2015.

So far, the total level of enquiries for January

2015 is down slightly and a little later than
in previous years, although we are seeing
an unusually high number of early bookings
from Spanish clients. Our growth forecast is
again positive and we are waiting eagerly to
see what this year brings to our special corner
of Murcia.
