FellowoftheRoyalSociety1714.LadyMontague,wifeofforeignambassadortoConstantinople
broughtbacktheinventionofingrafting,usedinresponsetoanoutbreakofsmallpoxthatoccurredin
1721.SwedenandSwitzerlandusedtheingraftingorvariolation,asdidU.S.PresidentGeorge

newmethod(hiswifedevelopedasepticinfectionandthetowndoctorhadtobecalledintoaddress

practiceswithingraftingorvariolationhadbeendonewitheverincreasinguneasiness.Heneverreally
showedenthusiasmforitandmostlikelyhisownexperiencewithitasaboyleftthememoryof

poxatall.Jennerslifelongbeliefthatvaccinationconferspermanentimmunitywassubsequently
recognizedaserroneousbythevaccinatorsthemselves.Dr.PeterRazwellwroteabookTheConquestof
SmallPoxandEdwardJennersCowpoxVaccineandarguedthatthevariolationwasasafeandeffective
methodthatwouldhaveeliminatedsmallpoxwithouttheJennerianvaccination.In1796Jenner
inoculatedJamesPhippsandby1798vaccinationhadsupplantedvariolation.In1807Napoleonof
FranceassignedJennerasthereasonsmallpoxhadbeenerasedformankind,althoughthe
vaccinationcontinuedtokeepthediseaseinplay.Jennerusedquillstostorethelymphfromoneperson

beliefs.In1842theParliamentofEnglandmadethepracticeofvariolationafelony.In1850Dr.
CheyneofBritonmixedbovinelymphwithglycerol,concludingthatitpreventeddecompositionand
allowedprolongedstorageofthemixture.However,inFrancetheVaccinationActof1898prohibited
armtoarmvaccination.In1870Dr.HAMartinofBostonstartedusingcalflymph.Dr.Edward
CrookshankcalledJenneracunningcharlataninhisbookhewroteontheHistoryandPathologyof
Vaccinationwhichwaspublishedin1889.Inthelatterpartofthe19thcenturyintheUS,physicians
broughtcowpoxinoculatedcalvesintothedoctorsofficesandscrapedvaccinefromtheirflanksand

CreightonalsowrotethebookEpidemicsofGreatBritonin1893,whereinhereportedthatsmallpox
