EVOLVE

The first step in evolution of ethics is a sense of solidarity with other human beings.
-Albert Schweitzer
Evolve, in literal sense, means develop gradually. Change is the law of nature. Everything that exists
in nature develops gradually from one form to the other, changes and adapts to its surroundings so that
it can survive and thrive even in the adverse conditions. Evolution can be considered as a time based
concept. The magnitude of change that we talk when it comes to evolution of a kind is directly related
to the time frame that we take into consideration. When we use the term evolve in context of human
beings in a long term, say a 1000 years, it tells the way Charles Darwin, the father of evolution,
described it in his book, The Origin of Species. If talk about human evolution in a short term frame, it
indicates to the mental and physical state of the residents of the society, their way of thinking, their
prevalent culture and values and their mind-set towards the various reforms of the society.
India is a highly versatile country. No other nation of the world has such demographic diversities, this
immense population with so major regional variations and cultural dissimilarities. In case of our
nation, evolution of our population in a more systematic way is one of the major challenges that our
leaders have faced and are facing today. Many great leaders and philosophers of our nation have
described their dream of Modern India in a lot many of texts and books. They all see India as a
prosperous nation, where all live in harmony and peace. They focus on telling how India can emerge
as the worlds leader. For all this, they tell, we require equality of caste, race, religion, gender,
brotherhood, mutual cooperation and a sense of belonging towards our mother land.
But, the recent incidents show a very different face of our country. A report published by the National
Crime Records Bureau compared the crime rates of 1953 and 2006. The report noted that burglary
declined over a period of 53 years by 79.84% (from 147,379, a rate of 39.3/100,000 in 1953 to 91,666,
a rate of 7.9/100,000 in 2006), murder has increased by 7.39% (from 9,803, a rate of 2.61 in 1953 to
32,481, a rate of 2.81/100,000 in 2006). Kidnapping has increased by 47.80% (from 5,261, a rate of
1.40/100,000 in 1953 to 23,991, a rate of 2.07/100,000 in 2006), robbery has declined by 28.85%
(from 8,407, rate of 2.24/100,000 in 1953 to 18,456, rate of 18,456 in 2006) and riots have declined by
10.58% (from 20,529, a rate of 5.47/100,000 in 1953 to 56,641, a rate of 4.90/100,000 in 2006).
Official sources show that rape cases in India has doubled between 1990 and 2008. In most of the rape
cases, the culprit is known to the victim.

Keeping hard-core crimes apart, let us take into consideration some of the smaller problems that our
society has been facing for a long time. Corruption, child marriage, drug abuse, littering, pollution,
global warming, and there is no end to this list. The situation has so deteriorated that even a half size
printed warning is now unable to stop people by smoking one. People have stopped caring even for
their own lives, what to say about the lives and welfare of others. There is a need for change in the
attitude of the people. Various people and governments have tried to mend ways in which people
behave as a part of a society. They make laws and give rights to its citizens in order to check their
deeds along with protecting their freedom. Time has witnessed a lot many of changes in the
constitution as and when they were needed.
Curriculums have been modified so as to inculcate a positive attitude and imbibe qualities such as
honesty in the children as a very early age. Subject of ethics have been made mandatory in all major
professional courses. These steps will, not immediately, but eventually bring the much needed changes
in the society. People have started to talk about topics such as Gender Sensitization and this can be
taken as positive sign in this recovering society. There is need for change in this society. There is need
for the change in the mind-set of the people.

incredible pace. Its culture, social values, demographics, and economy are rapidly changing, and these
stresses are having an impact on the people. But this cannot govern the way we evolve, the way we
represent ourselves, or the way we react to a situation. You are required to come up with
models/schemes/programs/policies to tackle these problems of disturbing mind-set of the in the
country in lieu of the changing style of living. You have to present a plan for providing an environment
for the evolution of the society in a more systematic and broad way so as to make educated individuals
dependable, trustworthy; having evolved mind-set. The idea you suggest should be economically
feasible and practical and must be as elaborate as possible.
Your Presentation must address the following issues:
1
Mention the present conditions and situations of the society.
2
Mention the sections where evolution can happen. How can this evolution happen?
Elaborate for any one of the identified sections on the measures that are to be taken in order to
make this evolution happen.
3
How would you establish a communication with the concerned authorities and inform
them about the situations and make help them in moving towards the defined goals?
4
Give an example of a social venture/government organization along which you would

Any other issue which you feel relevant.
