A Tripole HVDC System Based on Modular Multilevel Converters

Abstracts
This dissertation offers an improved plan which uses the full-bridge sub modules
based modular multilevel converters to replace the thyristor converters in pole 3, and the
converters in pole 1 and 2 are also substituted by the modular multilevel converters based on
half-bridge sub modules. In arrange to gain good performance among three poles, coordination
control is future This dissertation also proposes voltage-inverse control and a control strategy of
keeping current zero in pole 3 to suppress overvoltage and to reduce the ground current in
transition processes.

Existing method:
In the obtainable tri pole HVDC structure poles 1 and 2 adopt line-commutated
converters (LCC), and pole 3 uses a special converter comprised of anti parallel thyristors or anti
parallel valves owing to their bidirectional operational requirement. On the other hand the
application of thyristors leads to some similar defects to the conventional HVDC system, such as
dependence on the ac system voltage, reactive power consumption, lter requirements,
commutation failures, etc. In the transition process, the variation of reactive power cannot be
compensated in time by reactive compensators because of their relatively slow actions, which
will lead to ac voltage uctuations.

Proposed method:
In this dissertation, two different types of VSCs will be used as the converters, that is, the
full-bridge sub modules (FBSM)-based modular multilevel converter (F-MMC) used in pole 3
and the half-bridge sub modules (HBSM)-based modular multilevel converter (H-MMC) used in
pole 1 and pole 2.F-MMC has bidirectional operation capability of dc voltage and dc current, and
contributes to optimize the operation characteristics of the tri pole HVDC. Moreover, compared
with the conventional two-level or three-level VSCs, H-MMC has the merits of modular design,
low switching frequency, high efciency, and excellent output voltage waveforms.

This project developed in Matlab/simlink soft ware and the results have been studied.

Advantages:
1) A Tripole HVDC System Based on Modular Multilevel Converters compared with the
conventional two-level or three-level VSCs, H-MMC has the merits of modular design, low
switching frequency, high efciency, and excellent output voltage waveforms.
2) In this reactive power and voltage fluctuations are compensated.
Applications:

1) A Tripole HVDC System Based on Modular Multilevel Converters is applicable in high power
HVDC transmission systems.
2) These are also used in high rating transmission and distribution systems.
