Legend tells you The

Bard visited the area surrounding the picturesque
Atholl Arms Hotel in Dunkeld when he was part of
a wandering acting troupe
just before the year 1600.
The stunning countryside
stirred his creative juices and
it was there he conjured up
the story of Macbeth.
Ive
always
loved
the
bloodthirsty
tragedy,
the
story of evil fuelling ambition that sees Macbeth and
Lady Macbeth descend into
a
murderous
power-grab
that ends in madness, paranoia and their own deaths.
Nice precursor to a peaceful stroll in the woods with
the missus and Crunchie the
cocker spaniel, eh?
Dunkeld itself is a picturepostcard Perthshire village
with an enchanting main
street
of
bistros,
craft shops, delis
and pubs. Howies
for nachos and a
pint was a pleasure
and
we
strolled
back to the hotel
for dinner.
With our kids
almost out of the
nest
these
days
our agenda when
we look to grab a
precious couple of
days together has
changed.
We still love the
glitz of city breaks but, to
be honest, this year weve
relished more the stays in
dog-friendly
hotels
where
Crunchie can come with us
and we can enjoy our walks
together away from buzzing
phones and WiFi codes.
The Atholl Arms ticks the
boxes. The Riverview Restaurant has a terrific setting
and we looked out on the
Tay and devoured haggis
and venison canaps just to
get started. We then savoured superb steaks and excel-

lent wine the Pinot Grigio

and the Malbec flowed well.
This
break
had
been
designed to give us the
chance to take a breath and
do the things we never take
the time to do, like write letters to those we care about.
Doing it in front of a roaring fire in the welcoming
lounge with a glass of vino
suited me. Day Two was for
shopping,
and
we
strolled
up
the
High
Street
to
The Naked Sheep
a brilliant shop
where you can buy
the best of Harris
Tweed and other
superb
Scottish
brands.
Lunch meant a
trip up the A9 to
the
jaw-dropping
Falls of Bruar.
The
nearby
House of Bruar has
grown into a swish
outlet
mall
and
eaterie over the years weve
been travelling there, and
the soup never disappoints.
We headed for home after
two replenishing days. The
Atholl Arms Hotel has a
restaurant to savour, a welcome of warmth and clean,
comfortable rooms.
All set in a village you
dream of living in, and
countryside I never tire of
exploring.
No
wonder
Shakespeare loved it here.
