Introduction
1 Introduction
The FIBCOM 6310 node is intended for Access Networks and as Customer Premises Equipment.
This product is based on technology from FIBCOM 6320 STM-1.
The product is available in the versions shown in Fig. 1. Within the two versions a number of
variants are possible.
Both versions have add/drop capability of 21 x 2 Mbit/s. The flexible version has additional
transport interfaces.

Typical Applications
2 Typical Applications
2.1 Fixed Access Network Application
xDSL services, especially ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) has gained a foothold in
the fixed access network in recent years. This has also increased the need for collection of ATMbased traffic. DSLAMs (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers) are in todays access
networks installed in locations along with traditional Primary Multiplexers. As these locations
often are Outdoor Cabinets space is always limited.
To transport ATM-based traffic from DSLAM to ATM Switches over the optical network it is
often converted into E1s with Inverse Multiplexing ATM (IMA) before mapping ATM cells in the
SDH network.
The FIBCOM 6310 edge node offers a compact and unique solution that is able to map ATM
traffic in the SDH network without roundabout ways like IMA multiplexing. The FIBCOM 6310
node provides 21 x 2 Mbit/s lines when used with an ATM STM-1 UNI interface that includes
switching facilities and allows the operator to benefit from statistical multiplexing.

Features
4 Features
4.1 Connectivity
For both STM-1 and STM-4 the FIBCOM 6310 node offers full non-blocking
VC-12/VC-3/VC-4 connectivity from aggregate to aggregate and aggregate to tributary, tributarytributary (by connecting TU-12/TU-3). The cross-connect size of switching matrix is 16 port
STM-1 equivalent at HO and 4 port STM-1 Equivalent at LO, i.e. fully non-blocking 252x252
VC12 granularity is available.
4.2 Protection
Sub-Network Connection protection based on SNCP. The traffic in the ring can be planned
allocating both a working path and a protection path. If for example a fiber cable is damaged the
connection is preserved by automatic switchover to the protection path.
SNCP protection can be used for following applications like Ring, Mesh, Bus etc
4.2.1 SNC instead of 1+1 MSP protection
1+ 1 MSP
Collapsed Ring
Nested Rings
Taking advantage of SNCP ring-protection, a collapsed ring or a cascaded series of nested rings
can be protected with protection equivalent to MSP(1+1) and MS-SPRing.
Collapsed ring
The collapsed ring is made by interconnecting one end of the link with the other using
regenerators or optical amplifiers. SNCP protection achieves the same traffic capacity as 1+1 MSP
for most traffic patterns as well as protection against aggregate interface or fibre-break failure and
it also provides the same end-to-end traffic protection as in a linear 1+1 MSP system
Nested ring
The nested ring is a variety with similar features based on the cascading of collapsed rings. Each
sub-ring is interconnected to its neighbouring sub-ring via the SDH interface. In a nested ring

structure, SNCP may be applied as the protection scheme in each sub-ring without compromising
the traffic capacity properties of the end-to-end linear system. Thus, using the simpler SNC
scheme, protection is possible against aggregate interface failure or fibre breaks in each sub-ring
while providing the same end-to-end traffic capacity as in a linear 1+1 MSP system.
4.3 Drop-and-Continue
FIBCOM 6310 node supports Broadcast with Drop-and-Continue for distribution of a traffic
signal (e.g. a video signal) at several drop points in the network. Drop-and-Continue are
applicable to the VC-4, VC-3 and VC-12 path layers. The dropped signal can be protected using
SNC protection.
4.4 Loop-back
FIBCOM 6310 node offers loop-back on the 2, 34, 45 and 140 Mbit/s for test purposes. Two types
of loop-back are available:
Line loop-back, where a signal received from the PDH network at the input port is looped
back and returned at the output port, in addition to being transmitted inside the equipment
towards the SDH network as normal.
Terminal loop-back, where the signal from the equipment/SDH network in addition to being
transmitted to the PDH network at the output port is looped back and returned towards the
equipment/SDH network too.
4.5
Synchronization
The Fibcom 6310 node supports the SDH synchronization management that makes it possible to
protect the synchronization network. It is possible to synchronize a Fibcom 6310 node on the
following sources:
An incoming SDH signal
An incoming 2 Mbit/s signal
2,048 kHz or 2 Mbit/s clock signals
if the above are not available the system will operate from Internal clock.
It is possible to synchronize the equipment with any of the above sources as per the priority
assigned to them by the user.
In case of failure of highest priority reference clock, equipment will automatically switch to the
next priority clock signal available. In case all the refrence clock signals are lost, the system will
first enter in hold over mode and after that it enters to free-run mode. System will automatically
restore back and select high priority clock after it become available.
Fibcom 6310 node furthermore delivers an external synchronization clock:
2,048 kHz clock signals
