The piston-cylinder device is treated as a closed system, see the diagram window. Treat air as an
ideal gas and use the ideal gas property relations. The overall process is a combination of constant
pressure and constant volume processes.
2. A piston-cylinder device initially contains steam at 200 Kpa, 200 C, and 0.5 m3 of saturated
water. At this state, a linear spring (F proportional to x) is touching the piston but exerts no force
on it. Heat is now slowly transferred to the steam, causing the pressure and the volume to rise to
500 KPa and 0.6 m3, respectively. Show the process on a p-v diagram with respect to the
saturation line, and determine:
(a) The final temperature.
(b) The work done by the steam
(c) The total Heat Transferred
3.- Refrigerant 134a flows at steady state through a long horizontal pipe having an inside diameter
of 4 cm, entering as saturated vapor at 8C with a mass flow rate of 17 Kg/min. Refrigerant vapor
exists at a pressure of 2 bar. If the heat transfer rate to the refrigerant is 3.41 kW, determine the
exit temperature, in C, and the velocities at the inlet and exit, each in m/s.
4. - During some actual expansion and compression processes in piston-cylinder devices, the gases
have been observed to satisfy the relationship Pvn=C, where n and C constants. Calculate the work
done when a gas expands from a state of 150 kPa and 0.03 m3 to a final volume of 0.2 m3 for the
case of n=1.3. Let the politropic exponent vary from 1.1 to 1.6. Plot the boundary work versus the
polytropic exponent, and discuss the results. The problem must be extended by being able to
select different fluids, as shown in the figure.
5. - As shown in the figure, 15 Kg/s de steam enters a desuperheater operating at steady state at
30 bar, 320 C, where it is mixed with liquid water at 25 bar and temperature T2 to produce
saturated vapor at 20 bar. Heat transfer between the device and its surroundings and kinetic and
potential energy effects can be neglected.
(a) If T2 =200 C, determine the mass flow rate of liquid, in kg/s.
(b) Plot, in kg/s, versus T2 ranging from 20 to 220_C.
6.- Steam at 3MPa and 400C enters an adiabatic nozzle steadily with a velocity of 40 m/s and
leaves at 2.5 MPa and 300 m/s. Determine:
(a) The exit Temperature
(b) The ratio of the inlet to exit area A1/A2
The problem must be extended by specifying a mass flow rate and by being able to select different
fluids, as shown in the figure.
7. - In a steam heating system, air is heated by being passed over some tubes through which steam
flows steadily. Steam enters the heat exchanger at 30 psia and 400 F at a rate of 15 lbm/min and
leaves at 25 psia, 212 F. Air enters at 14,7 psia and 80 F leaves at 130 F. Determine the volume
flow rate of air at the inlet.
The options\Units must be set to English, mass basis, psia and F.
8. - Steam enters a turbine steadily at 10 Mpa and 500C with a velocity of 60 m/s and leaves at 25
KPa with a quality of 95 percent. A heat loss of 30 KJ/Kg occurs during the process. The inlet area
of the turbine is 150 cm2, and the exit area is 1400 cm2. Determine:
(a) The mass flow rate of the steam
(b) The Exit velocity
(c) The power output
9. - Steam enters a well-insulated turbine operating at steady state with negligible velocity at 4
Mpa, 320C. The steam expands to an exit pressure of 0.07 MPa and velocity of 90 m/s. The
diameter os the exit is 0.6 m. neglecting potential energy effects, plot the power developed by the
turbine, in kW, versus the steam quality at the turbine exit ranging from 0.9 to 1.0.
