An Ancient Armenian Lectionary (Renoux)


The lectionary presented here preserves an ancient tradition representing the practices of the Jerusalem Church
between 417 and 439 AD. For a detailed introduction, see the source for this information:

1.

Record of the synaxes as they are kept in Jerusalem at the holy places of Christ, in which is indicated the

date of the month and the reading of the day, and in which is indicated the psalm appropriate to the feasts and
to the memorials. If in this book we have repeated the same thing two times, three times, or more, let not a person
impute this action to ignorance, but much rather to our diligence so that without difficulty, following the proper
place for each synaxis, one searching may find the reading.
The feast of the Holy Epiphany has the place of 6 January. And on the 5th,
they gather at the Place of the Shepherds, at the tenth hour, and perform this canon:

the antiphon is: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is He who comes!

On the Monday of the Fast of Passover,

And after the fifteen psalms, and the five gobala, and the five prayers, in the same evening,

At the same hour of the night, on the Mountain, at the Summit, and this canon is performed:
Psalm 108, antiphon: Instead of loving me, they betrayed me,

40bis. At the same hour of the night, they gather at the Place of the Disciples,
and they read the Gospel according to Mark [14.27-42]
40ter. At the same hour of the night, they immediately descend the Holy Mount of Olives to Gethsemane,
and they read the Gospel according to Matthew [26.31-56]

Following this, they go, singing psalms, to the Courtyard of the House of the High Priest Caiaphas,
at the Place of the Repentance of Peter. And they read the Gospel according to Matthew [26.57-75]

At the same hour of the night, they go, singing Psalm 118, antiphon:
Give glory to the Lord, for He is good, and his mercy is forever [118.1 LXX; 119.1 NRSV]
And beginning at the gate, they say a gobala (Psalms 78, 79, and 80; antiphon:

On the morning of Friday, the precious wood of the Cross is place before Holy Golgotha.
And those who are assembled adore it, offering adoration until the sixth hour.
And at the sixth hour, they gather at Holy Golgotha, and
they say eight Psalms,

eight from the Apostle,
and for each Psalm, two readings, and one prayer only:

And the clergy immediately begins the vigil of the Holy Passover, and they do twelve readings.
And for each reading, the prayer is done with bended knee.
