Tanja Popovi
A perspective on literary demonism
S um m a r y
The study presents a short comparative overview of different formats of de
monism in the history of European literature and their interpretations. The overvi
ew starts with representations of demons in Antiquity and the Bible, then touches
upon the medieval tradition and finally discusses the epoch of Romanticism, when
demons were depicted as rebels and unhappy lovers. Their nature changed in accor
dance with the prevailing attitude to sin, i.e. attitude to death in particular epochs.
The focus of analysis is directed at works of Marlowe, Casotte, Goethe, Shelley,
Pushkin, Lermontov, Teodosije of Hilandar, Vojislav Ili, Dragutin Ili, Laza Kosti,
Jovan Jovanovi Zmaj and Matija Ban. In addition, mention is made of other key
authors and their works as well.
Demons are spiritual beings who connect the living and the dead. As a rule, in
literature and art they are depicted by means of grotesque. Their role in the fate of
literary heroes was mainly reduced to tempting and wavering of those running away
from sin, or those who willingly or unwillingly experienced it.
