DEPENDENCY THEORY
History and Orientation
Dependency theory was originally proposed by Sandra Ball-Rokeach and Melvin DeFleur
(1976). This theory merged out of the communication discipline.
Dependency theory integrates several perspectives: first, it combines perspectives from
psychology with ingredients from social categories theory. Second, it integrates systems
perspectives with elements from more causal approaches. Third, it combines elements of
uses and gratifications research with those of media effects traditions, although its primary
focus is less on effects per se than on rationales for why media effects typically are limited.
Finally, a contextualist philosophy is incorporated into the theory, which also features
traditional concerns with the content of media messages and their effects on audiences.
Research generated by this model had tends to be more descriptive than explanatory or
predictive.

Core Assumptions and Statements

Dependency theory proposes an integral relationship among audiences, media and the
larger social system. This theory predicts that you depend on media information to meet
certain needs and achieve certain goals, like uses-and-gratifications theory. But you do not
depend on all media equally. Two factors influence the degree of media dependence. First,
you will become more dependent on media that meet a number of your needs than on
media that provide just a few. The second source of dependency is social stability. When
social change and conflict are high, established institutions, beliefs, and practices are
challenged, forcing you to reevaluate and make new choices. At such times your reliance on
the media for information will increase. At other, more stable times your dependency on
media may go way down.
Ones needs are not always strictly personal but may be shaped by the culture or by various
social conditions. In other words, individualsneeds, motives, and uses of media are
contingent on outside factors that may not be in the individualscontrol. These outside
factors act as constraints on what and how media can be used and on the availability of
other non-media alternatives. Furthermore, the more alternatives and individual had for
gratifying needs, the less dependent he or she will become on any single medium. The
number of functional alternatives, however, is not just a matter of individual choice or even
of psychological traits but is limited also by factors such as availability of certain media.
Marxist Theory
Developed by Karl Marx in 2nd half of the nineteenth century during most volatile period of
social change in Europe
Theory arguing that the hierarchical class system is at the root of all social problems and
must be ended by the revolution of proletariat
Capitalism and class struggle
Robber baron (business men) capitalist for exacerbating social problems because the

maximize personal profit by exploiting workers

The workers would rise against capitalists and demand to an end to exploitation. They would
band together to create a democratic social order.
Capitalist need labor and the workers need wages. System is highly unbalanced
Marxism and media
Marx never study comprehensively the role of media but his work locates the role of mass
media in the context of the operation of the capitalist economy and emphasize the
connection the economic organization of society by a famous passage from his work
Creation of false consciousness
Marx refered to the creation of false consciousness in the minds of the other classes about
the political and social realities of capitalist society
Marx work encourages us to see the media as a means to promote a certain set of views
and ideas off the bourgeois
In other words the images, representations and report we see in the newspapers, see on
our screens or hear on our radio encourage us to see the established social order as natural,
desirable and something that we should support.
This is an evitable outcome of the fact that media are business and are privately owned by
the capitalist class
The media are instruments of social control whose content is manipulated to mislead people
and encourage them to accept their subordinations
Marx believed that class conflict over economic resources would become more acute with
the passing of time

Joseph Goebbels
[Adolf Hitlers propaganda minister in 1933, which gave him power over all German radio,
press, cinema, and theater. Goebbels directed virulent propaganda campaigns against the
Jews and other non-Aryan groups.]
Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945), German propagandist and politician, born in Rheydt, and
educated at the universities of Bonn, Berlin, and Heidelberg. He joined the National Socialist
(Nazi) Party in 1922 and began directing the students who entered the organization. In
1925 Goebbels met the party leader Adolf Hitler. In 1926 he was made Gauleiter, or party
leader, for the region of Berlin, and in 1927 he founded and became editor of the official
National Socialist periodical Der Angriff (The Attack). He was elected to the Reichstag, the
German parliament, in 1928 and a year later was chosen as propaganda leader of the Nazi
Party, in which capacity he became the apostle of unreasoning hatred of the Jews and other
non-Aryan groups such as the Slavs. His work as a propagandist materially aided Hitler's
rise to power in 1933. In that year, Goebbels was appointed Reichsminister for propaganda
and national enlightenment. From then until his death, Goebbels used all media of education
and communications to further Nazi propagandistic aims, instilling in the Germans the
concept of their leader as a veritable god and of their destiny as the rulers of the world. In
1938 he became a member of the Hitler cabinet council. Late in World War II, in 1944,
Hitler placed him in charge of total mobilization. On May 1, 1945, as Soviet troops were
storming Berlin, Goebbels committed suicide. The Goebbels Diary for 1942-43, found among
his papers, was published in English in 1948.
Q.7. Define Advertising? What are the principles of successful advertising?
Discuss the latest trends in advertising being practiced in our society? (20)
Q.8. What is the purpose and scope of Public Relation in any organization?
Describe the major responsibilities of a Public Relation Officer? (20)
Advertising:
Advertising is a paid communication through medium in which the sponsor is identified and
the message is controlled. Variations include publicity, public relations, product placement,
sponsorship, underwriting, and sales.
Most advertising tries to persuade or influence consumer to do. Something though in some
cases it is merely to make consumers aware of product or company.Message is conveyed
through different types of media.Advertising makes message reach large audience of
potential consumers. Advertising is a form of mass communication therefore it is nonpersonal.

successful marketing/advertising campaign:

Not every business qualifies for mass media advertising like TV, radio or major city
newspapers because their market segment does not make that a worthwhile expenditure.
For example, a business that specializes in a small segment of the population and only has
one location in a large Metro market would find usually find it cost-prohibitive to advertise
heavily on TV or in newspaper display ads. This would especially apply to a business with a
small mark-up on their products or one that has many competitors within that market area.
A better choice might be on-site promotion or direct mail to select customers.

Developing Advertising Plan

1.Determine who and where your most likely customers are.

2. Determine the best ways to get your message to your prospects.
3. Determine the most economical ways to transmit that message.
4. Create effective materials for the medium or media that you intend to use.
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of your advertising

PR tools/duties of a pr officer in organization

Public Relation could be defined as, 'It is a deliberate, sustained and planned effort to
establish and maintain mutual understanding between organization and its pubic'.
Public relations and publicity are not synonymous but many PR campaigns include provisions
for publicity. Publicity is the spreading of information to gain public awareness for a product,
person, service, cause or organization, and can be seen as a result of effective PR planning.
Public relation officer can have a strong impact on public awareness at a much lower cost
than advertising. The company does not pay for the space or time in the media. Rather it
pays for a staff to develop and circulate information and to manage events. If the company
develops an interesting story, it could be picked up by several different media, having the
same effect as it is.
Public relation officer have professional use of several tools. Major roles are Officer find or
create favourable news about the company and its products or people. Sometime news
stories occur naturally, and some times its products or peoples relation person can suggest
events or activities that would create news.
Public Relations or (PR) Officers use all forms of media to promote, build and maintain an
organisation's image and reputation. Reputation and image are based on what an
organisation does, what an organization says and what others say about it. PR aims to
manage reputation in order to gain understanding and support, and to influence opinion and
behaviour.
PR officers can work for voluntary organisations, public bodies and businesses any
organisation that has a reputation to manage. PR officers can work in an organisation's inhouse public relations department or in a consultancy where they serve a number of clients.
Public relations overlaps with other fields including corporate communications, public affairs,
investor relations, or media relations so PR officers may be known by various other job titles
depending on the employer.

Programme planning:

analysing problems and opportunities; defining goals; recommending and planning activities
and measuring results; liaising with management and clients throughout.

Writing and editing:

since public relations often involves trying to reach large groups of people, the method most
often used is the printed word. PR officers work on shareholder reports, annual reports,
press releases, articles and features, speeches, booklets, newsletters.

Media relations:

developing and maintaining a good working contact with the media. This involves applying
knowledge of how local and national papers, magazines, radio and television work as well as
the special interests of journalists.

Corporate identity:

developing and maintaining an organisation's identity via corporate advertising, presenting

the company's name and reputation rather than its products.

Speaking:

communicating effectively with individuals and groups at events ranging from small
meetings to presentations, speeches, trade fairs, and other special events.

Production:

brochures, reports, film and multi-media programmes are important means of

communication. PR officers also coordinate studio or location photography.

Special events:

news conferences, exhibitions, facility celebrations, open days, competitions and award
programmes are all used to gain the attention of specific groups. PR officers are often called
on to plan and execute large events for their companies or clients.

Research and evaluation:

the first activity undertaken by a public relations practitioner is usually analysis and fact
gathering. A PR programme should be evaluated as a continuing process and measurement
is used to decide future strategy.
