B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
1. Rationale
Marine pollution includes a range of threats including from land-based sources, oil spills,
untreated sewage, heavy siltation, eutrophication (nutrient enrichment), invasive species,
persistent organic pollutants (POPs), heavy metals from mine tailings and other sources,
acidification, radioactive substances, marine litter, overfishing and destruction of coastal and
marine habitats (McCook 1999, Nystrm et al. 2000, Bellwood et al. 2004). Overall, good progress
has been made on reducing Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), with the exception of the Arctic.
A polluted coastal area creates many problems for the citis it hosts. Damage to mangroves, coral
reefs, seagrass beds and sand dunes destabilizes the coastline, leading to erosion in some cases,
and excessive siltation in others. Infrastructure can be lost, and the commercial viability of ports
and harbours compromised. Damaged mangroves and seagrass beds render coastal areas more
vulnerable to storms and natural disasters, events which cause significant economic damage in
coastal cities, and which may even result in widespread loss of life. The pollution of coastal areas
affects fish resource stocks, which can lead to food and employment shortages in coastal cities.
Without mangroves and seagrass beds, fish lose important breeding nursery areas. Fish resources
also influenced by runoff from farmlands which degrades water quality. Overuse of fertiliser can
result in eutrophication, and in extreme cases, the created of dead zones. In Dead zones, uge
growths of algae reduce oxygen in the water to levels so low that nothing can live
Barangay Bula is classified as an urban barangay. Among its major resources of living are fishing,
trade and industry. Mostly of the inhabitants of Barangay Bula are into fishing provision (small
scale) and labor to large commercial fishing operators in General Santos City who were also a
resident of Barangay Bula. It is interesting to note that most of the successful commercial fishing
ventures traced their humble beginning in Barangay Bula. From its foundation in 1959, it has
become one of the productive and self-reliant barangay of the City of General Santos.
Barangay Bula also serves as basin of all marine trash form other municipal area in Sarangani
Province like Glan and Malapatan based on its geographical location the garbage from the said
area where driven by the current to General Santos City.

2. Objectives
- To introduce another method on collecting garbage
- To remove coastal waste off the water
- Easy garbage collection
- Serve as a time efficient method

3. Expected Output
As this project is conducted along the coastal waters of General Santos City, a pump boat will be
dispatched along with the setup in the proposal, catching floating waste along the surface of the
water and deposited into the catch basin on both sides of the boat, recording of and segregating
the waste form biodegradable and non-biodegradable then disposing of the waste accordingly.

4. Potential Impact
In this manner one new method would be introduced in coastal waste removal in conjunction with
the scubasurero program, therefore improving efficiency and productivity in collecting coastal
waste.
