he clerk at McGills Sporting Goods, a sandy-haired college kid, pushed a button to feed the paper tape through
the register, but it jammed for the third time. Scowling,
he tossed the crumpled receipt in the trash. Sorry, sir. I know
youre in a hurry.
Yes, I am. Dr. Ryan Tremaine spoke through gritted teeth,
but he didnt blame the clerk for his predicament. Hed been a fool
to let his two youngest children, Penny and Eric, out of his sight,
but hed lost patience with Eric for pouting and Penny for pulling
the tags off rugby shirts. Expecting to be right behind them, hed
allowed them to go to the food court for ice cream while he paid
for the baseball cleats for Kyle, his oldest son.
It was a bad decision, and Ryan knew it. The mall, crowded on
this Saturday afternoon in June, was a dangerous place, especially
for a little girl with special needs and a thirteen-year-old boy who
had what a family therapist called issues.
Kyle slung the bag holding the shoebox over his shoulder. This
is taking forever. Maybe I should check on Eric and Penny.
Ryan was about to agree when the register spit out the mile-long
7

receipt. The clerk tore it off and handed it to him with a flourish.
There you go, sir. Sorry for the delay.
Snatching it, Ryan spun on his heels. With Kyle at his side, they
sped out of the store to the main mall. Hed given Eric a twentydollar bill and instructions to buy whatever treats he and Penny
wanted, then to wait in front of the ice cream place. Striding toward
it now, he scanned the counter, empty except for a trio of giggling
teenage girls. His gaze zipped to the tables in front of the shop,
also empty, then to the sea of half-filled wooden chairs and gray
Formica tables.
Do you see them? he asked Kyle.
Not yet.
Ryan focused on one face at a time. An ophthalmologist by
profession, he had better than 20/20 vision, which made his failure to spot Penny and Eric even more alarming. In spite of the icy
air conditioning, droplets of perspiration beaded on his neck and
dripped down his spine.
Kyle pointed to the far side of the food court. Theres Eric.
Ryan spotted his son coming out of a video arcade filled with
shadows, flashing lights, and kids who looked as rebellious as Eric
in his zombie T-shirt and baggy pants. Eric had no business in that
place, especially with Penny. She was five years old and a victim
of FASD, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, a condition that affected her in myriad ways, including sensitivity to noise, light, and
smells. If Eric had taken her to the arcade, anything could have
happeneda meltdown, her running away, maybe hiding. She had
done that a couple of times at the house, and Ryan had battled
panic until he found her.
Five steps beyond the arcade, Eric ground to a halt. Panic glinted
on his face like sunlight on a mirror, ricocheted back to Ryan, and
blinded him with a terror so fierce he stopped breathing. There
was only one explanation. Penny was missing.
It was Ryans fault, not Erics. The FASD was his fault, too.

Penny had been conceived in the affair that wrecked his marriage
a byproduct of impulse and enough gin to drown his conscience,
at least for a time. When Pennys mother had died six months
ago, hed taken custody and made a solemn vow to never fail his
daughter again. It was a promise he broke daily, it seemed. No
matter how hard he tried to connect with her, she still called him
Dr. Tremaine instead of Daddy.
His relationship with his sons wasnt much better, but his ex-wife
was away on a mission trip, and he had the boys under his roof for
three months. Determined to rebuild their trust, hed written out
what he called the SOS listthings a family did and enjoyed together,
things that made them close. Traditionally, SOS stood for Save Our
Souls, but Ryan didnt believe in God. For his purposes, SOS stood for
Sink or Swim, which is what he and his kids would do this summer.
With Penny missing, they were sinking hard and fast.
Eric spotted him and broke into a run. Behind him, a uniformed
security officer gave chase while speaking into a microphone clipped
to his collar. It didnt make sense, unless the man knew something
about Penny.
Terror shredded through Ryan like a riff on an electric guitar,
though no one would know it to see his face. Carefully blank and
in control, he shoved aside the rising panic in spite of the mental
picture of Penny lost in the mall. With her blond ponytail and blue
eyes, she was a beautiful little girl. And vulnerable... more vulnerable than most children because of the way fetal alcohol affected
her brain. Instead of being naturally shy, she would go to anyone,
especially a nice man with candy... a nice man who would take
her for a nice ride in his nice car.
Stay clinical, Ryan told himself. Get the facts. But he couldnt
turn off the ugly pictures or the fear, and when he swallowed, acid
burned the back of his throat. Forcing down the bile, he called to
Eric over the rumble and clatter in the food court, Wheres your
sister?

Blond hair. Blue eyes. He held out his arm to show her height,
saw his shaking hand, and pulled it back. Shes about forty inches
tall. He knew, because shed just been to the pediatrician.
What is she wearing?
Denim overalls and a pink T-shirt. Both wrinkled because
the fourth nanny had quit yesterday, leaving him to add Find a
new nanny for Penny to his SOS list. Hed planned this day so
differently... just Kyle and himself shopping for baseball cleats
and grabbing burgers for lunch. Now, instead of happily crossing
Buy cleats for Kyle off the SOS list, he silently berated himself for
the bad judgment that put his daughter in danger and his younger
son in the middle.
Officer Lewis repeated Pennys description into the radio, then
explained a Code Adam to Ryan. The outer doors of the mall were
being locked as he spoke, and no one would leave without being
observed by a designated mall employee. Pennys description would
go out on the PA system, and managers would walk the aisles of
their stores. If Penny wasnt found in ten minutes, law enforcement
would be called, the doors would be opened, and the alert canceled.
Ryan nodded, his face carefully blank, but his heaving lungs
revealed his panic. He blinked and imagined Penny in a nondescript
sedan, clawing at the windows, calling for help. He blinked again
and pictured her frail, broken body in a shallow grave, then in the
morgue, covered in a white sheet, lost to him before he could make
up for how she was conceived.
Most people blamed the mother for fetal alcohol exposure, but
Ryan considered himself as accountable as Jenna. Hed bought the
gin and wine theyd consumed. They had made this child together,
told lies to each other and to those they loved. What a fool he had
been. One impulsive fling and Penny had paid dearly.
So had Jenna.
And Heather, his ex-wife.
And his sons.

way she inspected each rabbit before hurling it to the floor. With a
BA in biology, a masters in social work, plus a year of PhD work
at UCLA, Carly knew kids. Something about Pennys expression
struck her as atypical.
Hoping to nudge the girl along, she picked up a brown rabbit with
a white tummy and black button eyes. Wiggling the rabbits head,
she made her voice squeak. Im Tiffany Rabbit, and I need a home.
Pennys blue eyes lit up. Me too.
You do? Tiffany asked.
I do, Penny repeated. My mommys not here.
The poor woman had to be worried sick. Using Lance again,
Carly spoke in his voice but with more authority. Come with me,
Miss Penny. Ill help you find her.
Shes in heaven.
No... No... Not this sweet child. An old wound split open,
and Carly swallowed a familiar lump of grief. Shed been fourteen
when her mother died of a fast-moving cancer, leaving her to be
raised by her father and older brother and sister. The gold locket
hidden under her red polo shirt, warm from her skin and memories, had belonged to her mother and was Carlys most treasured
possession. She made Lance dip his head in a kind of prayer. Im
sad for you, Miss Penny.
Penny nodded solemnly. Im sad, too.
Do you have a daddy? Lance asked.
Sort of. Penny heaved a very adult sigh. Mostly I have nannies. Dr. Tremainehes my daddyhe works all the time. Kyle
is nice, but I hate Eric. He took me to the arcade, and I hate the
arcade. It smells bad. Her lower lip popped out, stiffened, and
trembled with the threat of tears.
Tiffany Rabbit hippety-hopped to the rescue. I need a mommy,
too. Can I come home with you?
Penny raised her skinny little arm and patted Tiffany on the
head. I want this one.

he was handsome, even striking, but his steely gaze lacked warmth
of any kind.
Carly laid a protective hand on Pennys shoulder. Your daddys
here.
The child looked at her father, her expression blank as she lifted
Tiffany Rabbit and made her talk. Hi, Dr. Tremaine, she said in
a squeaky voice. Im Tiffany Rabbit, and Im going home with
Penny. Lance is coming, too.
The man stared at the rabbit, speechless. He clearly didnt know
how to play with a child, and Penny plainly needed someone who
did. When his gaze shot to Carlys face, his blue eyes collided with
her brown ones the way an empty sky touches flat brown earth.
Fear glittered in his irises, but so did arrogance. Carly didnt like
that cold glare, not one bit. Penny needed a daddy, not this man
who oozed tension, maybe anger.
Determined to make her point, she raised Lance and gave an
enthusiastic growl. Grrr. Im Lance the Lion. Nice to meet you,
Dr. Tremaine.

on the far side of a play area designed for toddlers. The stuffed
chairs were at a ninety-degree angle to each other and offered a view
of Eric at the counter and Kyle and Penny at the end of an aisle.
This is the dad spot, she said lightly. Have a seat.
Why the dad spot?
Moms never sit down. She sank into the cushions and crossed
her legs. When it comes to dressing up stuffed animals, fathers
tend to watch.
Ryan said nothing.
Dont get me wrong, she said with a flutter of one hand. The
dads arent neglectful. If something happens, they move fast, like
you did when you hurried into the store. Losing Penny had to be
terrifying.
He gave her high marks for diplomacy but braced for the inevitable criticism. It shouldnt have happened.
Of course not. But even the best parents make mistakes. As
my dad says, Learn and move on. Settling back, she laced her
fingers over one knee. Thats why I wanted to talk to you. Winning Pennys trust was extremely easy. A predator could have
I know.
Its important she learn
Believe me, I understand the situation. He didnt need this
lecture, and he saw no reason to explain that Penny suffered from
FASD. It was like confessing to child abuse, which was how he saw
drinking during pregnancy. Penny was completely unexpected and
a terrifying surprise considering they had used birth control.
Ryan shoved to his feet. Thank you again. But as you heard, I
need to take Eric back to the arcade.
She stood with him. I dont mean to push, but I see at-risk kids
every day. How old is Penny? Around four?
Five, almost six. Shes small for her age.
That makes her even more vulnerable. Kids are impulsive. They
have to learn, and its our job to teach them. We have to...

He released his grip but kept his eyes on her face. Are you all
right?
Im fine. Her voice wobbled, and she seemed as stunned as
he was, either from the near fall or his touch.
Dismissing the moment as nature at work, Ryan trained his gaze
on Penny, still clinging to Carlys leg and demanding to play with
her. Her voice rose in both volume and pitch, telling the world she
was overwhelmed, not in words but in the unbridled emotion of
a coming meltdown. Penny was a mess. His life was a mess, and
it showed.
Teeth clenched, he picked up his daughter, held her tight against
his chest, and used one hand to cup her head against his shoulder.
If he shielded her from the noise and glaring lights, maybe shed
settle down. Instead, she howled like a banshee, reared back, and
kicked so hard he nearly buckled over.
What made him think he could raise a little girl he didnt under
stand? Six months ago, hed been given a choice when Denise
CaldwellJennas older sister and Pennys Aunt DeeDeeoffered
to take custody. Ryan had refused. Penny was his flesh and blood,
and he owed her the best life he could provide. But at times like
this, with her screams knife-like in his ear, he felt as bereft and
alone as Penny.
I want to stay here, she yelled. I want to play with the rabbits.
There was no point in trying to reason with her. Once she lost
control, she didnt have the ability to regain it. Im sorry, he said
to Carly over Pennys wailing. Ill get her out of here.
No. Carly pointed to a curtained doorway on the back wall.
Lets go to the break room. She needs less stimulation, not more.
The stares of other customers ate into him, their smiles smug
and slightly superior, as if their perfect children would never behave
in such a way. Ignoring them, he made eye contact with Kyle and
jerked his chin to signal where they were going, then he followed
Carly to a narrow room with a sagging couch, a mini-fridge, and

Im not interested. No more personal involvement, she reminded herself. With Allison, shed lost the professional distance
meant to protect them both. The teenager paid a price, and Carly
had left Sparrow House with a load of guilt and the determination
to help FASD kids by preventing the affliction in the first place.
Thats why she was working on her PhD at the UCLA School of
Social Welfare. When she finished, shed go home to Kentucky and
dedicate herself to national prevention programs.
She normally talked about FASD whenever the opportunity
arose, but she needed to discourage Dr. Tremaine. I hope you
find the right person. Its not me.
Im desperate. Pennys had four nannies in six months. The
last one quit yesterday. I didnt want to bring Penny to the mall,
but there wasnt much of a choice.
I know its hard. Oh, did she ever. But the answer is still no.
It pays well.
She shook her head.
You can live in or keep your own place. Ill even negotiate hours.
No, she said again.
Whatll it take?
For Allison to be found alive and unharmed. Maybe then Carly
could forgive herself. As things stood, the confident woman who
had marched into Sparrow House with a newly minted social work
degree had crawled into a hole and died. It was Carlys father who
had pulled her out with the suggestion of more grad school. When
shed won a full-ride scholarship, shed taken it as Gods hand,
packed her Chevy Cavalier, and sped west.
Somewhere in the tornado-touched plains of Oklahoma, she
stopped being Carly Jo and became simply Carly. The name change
seemed appropriate, though she missed Kentucky terribly. Given a
choice, shed pick grits over salsa any day of the week. Californians
might have lower cholesterol than folks in Kentucky, but they didnt
know beans about good cooking.

UCLA.
Undergrad?
He was bulldozing her into an interview, and she didnt like it
a bit. But at that moment, Penny rolled on the couch, drew up her
knees, and pulled into a fetal position. A lump shoved into Carlys
throat, and she answered his question without thinking. Im working on a PhD in social welfare. I have a masters from UK.
UK? As in England?
No. She was used to the misunderstanding. Where I come
from, UK stands for the University of Kentucky.
Basketball.
Go, Cats. She gave a little fist pump. If talking Wildcat basket
ball would change the subject, shed wear UK blue for a week.
I hear it now, he said.
What?
Your accent.
Well, thats where Im fromBoomer County, Kentucky. She
let the mountain drawl come out in full force. People in L.A. were
either charmed by it or snobbishmostly snobbish.
Dr. Tremaine didnt seem to care either way. How much longer
will you be here?
At least a year. More like two years. Shed finished most of the
class work and was in the preliminary stages of her dissertation.
To Penny, a year is a long time. At this point Id be grateful
for even two months with the same person. Would you at least
think about it?
Every time he said the childs name, Carly inwardly winced. If
he pushed much harder, shed cave in, and theyd all regret it. It
was time to be country tough, so she put her hands back on her
hips. The answer is still no, and theres a second reason for it. A
very good one.
What is it?
You.

sight of them filled Carly with a longing for her own siblingsan
older brother who was on deployment with the Kentucky National
Guard and an older sister with two kids and a baby on the way.
You have a nice family, she said to Dr. Tremaine.
He hesitated. Yes. I suppose I do.
How could he doubt it? Carly was twenty-eight, single, and
dedicated to a cause, but she still longed for a family of her own.
As she watched the Tremaines leave the store, she hoped they
knew how blessed they were. A family was something to cherish,
and not all children had one. Allison had lived in nine foster homes
by the time she moved into Sparrow House, including one where
shed been five days shy of a permanent adoption when the prospective parents discovered the wife was pregnant and changed their
minds. That was typical of Allison and her lifecandy dangled
and taken away.
Letting out a sigh, Carly helped with the birthday party until the
twelve little girls were happy with their animals and left the store.
Famished, she told her coworker she was taking lunch, fetched her
tub of yogurt, and sat on the couch still bearing a dent from Pennys
body. After a few bites, loneliness struck like a fist to her solar
plexus, and she decided to call her father. With the three-hour time
difference, Reverend Paul Mason would be finished preparing for
Sunday at the sixty-year-old church hed pastored all of Carlys life.
He picked up on the first ring. Hey, honey. How are you doin?
Im fine, Daddy. How bout you?
Just getting ready for tomorrow. In that singsong drawl she
loved, he told her about plans for the Sunday service. Wish you
were here.
Me too.
So hows Wild Thing?
Wild Thing was the butterscotch kitten shed found in the alley
and taken in shortly after renting her apartment. Shes fine.
And you?
35
_Bylin_TogetherWithYou_SA_kf.indd 35
1/21/15 5:13 PM
Im all right. Except her voice came out breathy and sad.
Knowing her father would hear the struggle, she fessed up. Actually, Im kind of down right now. A little girl with FASD got lost
in the mall. She wandered into the store and everythings fine, but
she reminded me of Allison.
He paused, no doubt breathing a prayer. I dont suppose youve
heard from her.
No.
Shes in Gods hands, not yours. All you can do is pray.
I know, Daddy.
And while youre at it, stop beating yourself up. Its about time
you forgave yourself.
I wish I could. In her darkest moments, she pictured Allison
as a victim of sex trafficking, pregnant and drinking, even dead in
a ditch. Where was God in this big messy world? Carly knew the
theology, but her prayer life was nothing but static and garbled
pleas for help, like an old movie where an island castaway calls
desperately for rescue on a broken radio.
Her chest ached with a homesickness so powerful she smelled
her fathers pipe tobacco. Home. She ached for the comfort of the
house where she grew up, the serenity of rolling green hills and a
sky full of clouds instead of smog. As soon as she finished school,
shed go home for good.
Her fathers voice pulled her back to the bargain yogurt and the
break room. Tell me about this little girl.
Blond. Blue eyes. Like Allison, except Penny didnt have the
physical indicators of FAS other than being small for her age. Allisons face had displayed them all: small widespread eyes, the lack
of a philtrumthe indentation under the nose, a flattened face,
and a smaller than normal head. The clinical aspects varied widely
from person to person, but today Carly focused on what mattered
mostthe child herself. Her names Penny and shes adorable.
Her fathers raising her alone.

No mother?
She died six months ago. Carly told her dad the entire story,
including Dr. Tremaines pressuring her to interview for the nanny
job. I wont call, of course.
Are you sure about that?
Very.
You know what I think, Carly Jo?
She laughed, more out of pain than amusement. I dont know,
but youre dying to tell me. Go right ahead.
He paused, maybe to take a long draw on his pipe. Im sitting
here on the porch looking at the clouds. Some of them are thunderheads boiling up right before my eyes. Others are as wispy as
feathers. Way in the distance, theres a wall of gray and no blue
sky at all because a storms headed this way. You know what your
mother used to say about the Kentucky weather.
If you dont like it, wait an hour and itll change.
Thats right.
When it came to beating around the bush, her father was a
master. What are you getting at, Daddy?
You used to love storms. Youd press your little nose to the
window and watch the lightning as fearless as can be. The thunder didnt bother you a bit. You laughed at it. Now heres the
point... He paused as if he were preaching to his whole congregation, not just to Carly. Youve changed, baby girl. Youve
lost your courage.
Carly bristled from head to toe. How can you say that? It took
courage to move to Los Angeles.
Yes, it did. But it might have taken more courage to stay at
Sparrow House and face what happened.
Guilty as charged. If she used church lingo, maybe hed believe
her. I have a new calling now. And the scholarship. God opened
that door.
I dont doubt it. And thats what troubles me. Maybe the Lords
37

opening a new door with this nanny job. I have to wonder if youre
slamming it a little too quicklyand a little too hard.
She jumped to her feet and started to pace. You know whatll
happen if I take this job. Penny will get attached to me.
I see the logic, but youve never been one to play it safe. Does
this doctor seem like a decent man?
She thought of the business card in her pocket. He told me
to call his office manager for a character reference. Shes known
him for years.
Thats a good sign.
I suppose.
Her father said nothing for several seconds. She imagined him
puffing his pipe and staring at the sky, until his deep voice broke
the silence. I know youll make the right choice, but I wish I were
there to look out for you.
When it came to protecting his family, Paul Mason had a big
heart and the sincerity of a shotgun. A sweet smile lifted Carlys
lips. I know, Daddy. I love you lots.
I love you, too, sweetheart. A sigh whispered over the phone.
Your mother and I worked hard to give you wings. We just didnt
expect you to fly so far away.
He said we as if her mother were sitting next to him; then he
changed the subject to news about her brother and sister. Carly
ate up every detail until her break ended and they said their usual
long good-bye.
The rest of the afternoon slipped by, and at closing time Carly
locked up the store and drove to her apartment, a first floor studio
in an old neighborhood. A year ago the area had seemed safe, but
now gang graffiti and burglaries were on the rise. Just last week,
someone broke into Bettes car and stole the phone she had carelessly left on the seat.
Vigilant as always, Carly turned down the alley that led to the
carport behind her building. After parking, she gripped her pepper

spray and headed for the gate leading to a courtyard full of overgrown juniper shrubs. Good lighting illuminated the way, but she
trembled as she passed through the squeaky gate.
As she stepped onto the raised slab of her porch, Bette, still wearing her Vons bakery uniform, opened her own door and stepped
outside. Her bubble of brown hair sagged a bit and her red lipstick was long gone, but a chunky braceletshe wore them all the
timestill dangled on her wrist. Today it was the pink and silver
one Carly had given to her for her birthday.
Ive been waiting for you, Bette said. You wont believe what
I heard at work today.
Carly braced for bad news. What happened?
There was a murder on Mariel Avenue. It was a home invasion
by three men. The poor woman was raped and beaten to death.
They didnt take anything, not even her purse.
Blood drained from Carlys face. Bad things happened everywhere, even in Boomer County, but a home invasion just two blocks
away? Strangers beating up a woman for no reason? Carly didnt
bother to ask God why. She had stopped asking that question the
day her mother died. Instead of fighting what she couldnt understand, Carly had decided to become a doctor and find a cure for
cancer. Her career goals had changed but not her ambition to do
good in the world.
I cant believe it, she muttered. Whats wrong with people?
Its the second one around here since April.
Two murders in two months within a few blocks of her apartment. Her belly clenched with a nauseating mix of fear and fury.
We both need to move.
I think about it, Bette admitted. But Ive lived here twentytwo years. This is my home.
Dr. Tremaines offer to live in flitted through Carlys mind. As
appealing as that aspect of the job was, she refused to abandon
Bette. We could look for a two-bedroom and share it.
39
_Bylin_TogetherWithYou_SA_kf.indd 39
1/21/15 5:13 PM
Forget that! Bette flicked her hand to dismiss the idea. You
know how I feel about my privacy. Besides, youre going home to
Kentucky.
Bettes cat, a black male with four white paws, slinked around
her ankles and meowed. Toms hungry. I better go.
Me too. But first she knelt and gave Tom a chin scratch.
Keep your door locked, Bette cautioned.
Always.
In unison, they stepped into their matching apartments and
shut their matching doors, each alone with her cat and her fears.
A lamp cast a warm glow as Carly twisted the lock behind her.
Unnerved by Bettes news, she placed her purse on the table holding her laptop and research material, and then sat on the bed and
stroked Wild Thing.
Somewhat comforted, she went to the kitchenette to fix Wild
Things supper. As she opened the lid on the trash to toss the empty
can, the smell of yesterdays tuna assaulted her nose. Normally she
would have run the bag out to the dumpster in the alley, but the
trip would have to wait until morning. No way would she venture
outside with a womans murder fresh in her mind. She needed to
move, but where? Rents were high in Los Angeles, and she didnt
want roommates, especially fellow students who were as idealistic
as she used to be.
She had no choice but to stay here... or to interview for the
