x M.Tech. Thesis: Evaluation of different approaches for classification of Hyperspectral Data

(June08 current)
Supervisor: Dr. Onkar Dikshit (Professor, Geoinformatics, Head of the Department, Civil Engineering)
Details: Hyperspectral Data collected by German Space Agency was used to evaluate different classification schemes on the basis
of classification accuracies produced. Classification technique is used to obtain thematic maps of an area. Thesis work is in
progress as of now.
x Applications of GIS and Remote Sensing in Soil Erosion Assessment A Case Study
October08
Details: Various GIS and Remote Sensing tools were used to aid in studying the geomorphology of a place and using an example
from a case study of Sukhna Lake catchment area the methodology of applying these tools was studied.
Achievement: The importance of effective data storage and extracting information out of data collected was the main theme.
x Development of Segmentation based Classification Software Package for ISRO
(June November08)
Details: Integrated several segment based classification approaches worked upon by earlier M. Tech. students to build a software
package exclusively for ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). The software was tested for errors and bugs and the GUI
was improved on the basis of feedback from various test users.
Achievement: Software of commercial importance was successfully built and will be handed over to ISRO in a few days.
x Building Identification in LiDAR point cloud data
April08
Details: Developed a mathematical model for identifying building edges in the point cloud data and stimulated using tools of
Optimization theory and prior knowledge of Coordinate Geometry. Various flight parameters are considered to study their effect
on edge identification accuracy of the developed algorithm.
Achievement: Method adopted was selected as the best method among the presented ideas for identifying building edges.
x Bare Earth Model (BEM) Estimation using Slope Method
January08
Details: Proposed a slope based algorithm to isolate bare earth terrain by removing structures like buildings, trees etc. that stands
above the surface of earth. Sudden changes in slope are manifested by artificial structures and vegetation while gradual changes
indicate the natural terrain itself.
Achievement: The proposed algorithm worked under assumed constraints and a scope of further study in this field will be aided
by this work and algorithm coded.

Key Academic Projects (B.Tech.)

x Effects of Man-Machine relationships on safety of Socio-Technical Organizations
April08
Details: Studied the role of man and machine relationships in organizations like a Nuclear Power Plant and analyzed the Bhopal
Gas Tragedy from point of view of human error and possible mechanical fault.
Achievement: Key points were discussed opening new dimensions with respect to the role of man-machine coupling.
x Structural Analysis using Computer Interface
March06
Details: Analyzed a building frame with X Braces for Earthquake loads at a given location. Structural Analysis Program was
used to carry out structural analysis based on Equivalent Lateral Force Method. As described in IS: 1893 (Part 1) 2002.
Achievement: Successfully compared and found similar results from manual calculations and software simulations.
x Graphical Interfaces for Education & Learning
March05
Details: Created a game using Java Programming which produces Java based graphics and frames. The game was a single player
game and involves learning principles of reflection of light.
Achievement: By just using simple java tools, graphics are created which would aid in teaching methods and encourage
interactive thinking among students.

Summer Internship
x Organization: Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT)
Place: Goyang-city, South Korea
Department: Geotechnical
Period: 7th May-27th July07
x Objective: To study the underlying relationship between the electric current drawn by the machinery and the drilling torque
generated while boring through the soil strata.
x Description: Worked on a self designed Small Boring Machine to conduct preliminary experiments. Prepared cement-soil samples,
performed laboratory experiments, acquired data using NI-cDAQ (Data Acquisition toolkit by National Instruments) and data was
processed using Matlab as a programming tool.
x Achievement: Successful results were achieved during the preliminary stages proving its feasibility and aiding in carrying forward
research work at higher scale.

Positions of Responsibility
x Teaching Assistant under Dr. Onkar Dikshit, Geoinformatics, IIT Kanpur
(August08 Till Date )
Assisting professor in maintaining the course website (designed by myself) and ensuring smoothness during Laboratory Exercises of
the 3rd year students.
x Member of Orientation Team, Counseling Service, PG Wing
July08
Worked with a team of volunteers and coordinators to mentor and assist new PG students during their orientation, registration and
hostel allotment procedures.
x Supervisor, short course on Best Practices in Surveying
(5-7, June08)
Geoinformatics Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur
Trained 25 field operators of Nagarjun Construction Company Limited. Course included advanced surveying techniques and
short term experience of working with the latest surveying instruments.
x Secretary, Musical Events, Cultural Festival (Antaragni), IIT Kanpur
October06
Organized a two day event, working in a team comprising of coordinators, secretaries and volunteers
x Secretary, I-Quz, Quiz Event, Technical Festival (Techkriti), IIT Kanpur
February05
Arranged and set-up the self built Quiz Buzzer specially made for the Buzzer Round
The Quiz host personally cheered for the Buzzer making team during the event.

Awards and Accomplishments

x Completed Geosciences & Surveying Camp held as a part of academia (December, 2006).
x Finished two Rapid Model Making Tasks set by the Animation Club at IIT Kanpur (January, 2006).
x Remarkable performance in the Annual Taekwondo Competition (White Belt Category) conducted by Kanpur Tae-Kwon-Do
Association at IIT Kanpur (March, 2005).
x Designed an Electronic Quiz Buzzer for the Quiz Club which uses Integrated Circuits and Logic Gates to distinguish between
the consecutive hits by different teams at a time difference of the order of micro-seconds. (February, 2005)
x Awarded 3rd prize in Electronic Circuit Designing Competition, Beginners Level: The Mole Game in Techkriti
(February, 2005).
