CRITICAL REFLECTION

Introduction
For this semester, we have been assigned to find an assessment that is
used in lesson plan for the subject TSL 3123 LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT. In
the previous assignment, we were required to study the assessment used in a
lesson based on the Principle of Language Assessment. The assignment
actually consist of 3 task which are written report on classroom language
assessment, task 2 on the test designing, construction, and use in the
language classroom and lastly on critical report. Before proceed to the next
part, I would like to thank my partner Nareshkumar A/L Jeeva for helping,
designing and discussing on which assessment to be used in this assignment. I
also want to thank Mr. Ramli Bin Mansor for giving us the opportunity,
cooperation and also guidance in finishing the assignment.
Assessment is used widely in all education level including primary and
secondary level. The main aims are to test on the students knowledge and
language ability. There are many types field that the teacher can test on
including listening, speaking, writing, reading or the combination of the skills
which really assessed students ability on what have they been taught before.
What have I gained
There are many things that I have learned through this assignment.
Besides, there is also lots of thing that need to be considered before an
assessment is produce and be used by the students. Honestly speaking, I have
gain lots of new information on the principle of language assessment which I
have slight information this before. Basically, Reliability, validity, washback,
practicality, objectivity and authenticity are some of the language assessment
component which is really helpful in order to make sure our assessment is
usable and test all the field of skills that have been taught to our students.

Before go for the practicum, everything that I have learned will remain on
the paper and only can be used as the theory. During the practicum period, all
the theory can be implemented and observed. For this assignment, we ask
permission from our cooperating teacher Mrs. Fadzillah in year 3 Sentosa to
observe her teaching and how she construct and use the assessment. During
that session, she was teaching on listening and speaking for topic 10: A Ride in
The Safari. It is not easy for a teacher to construct an assessment for the
students. According to her, there are 3 stages that a teacher should do in
constructing and implementing the language assessment. These stages should
be done step by step. Before getting into the first stage, teacher should know
his/her students language skill, ability and also

students vocabulary. This will

ensure the content of the assessment does not go beyond students ability
which is impossible for the students to achieve it. The first stage will be on
designing. In designing the assessment, all the basic principle of language
assessment should be refer on. Next is the construction. Basically, teacher
should know the purpose or field that the students will be tested on. Purpose of
an assessment can be defined as why and what the teacher is going to test the
students on or in simpler words what content is going to be put to the
assessment. Teacher should also have clear objectives of the test. Lastly is
using the test or the implementation part.
Besides, this assignment also makes me realize that a good lesson plan
should be done in order to assess the students. In order to produce a lesson
plan, teacher needs to take some time to plan the lesson so that it will be
smooth and there will be relation in each activity in every stage.
Alternative ways to overcome any problems of assessment
There are also some alternative ways in which the assessment task
could be designed or used. Since the only problem with the assessment is on
the washback part where the students cannot come up with their own sentence,
maybe the teacher can use table of substitution. This kind of activity is actually
easy for both teacher and students because the students can change the

subject or the verb that they want. By using the table of substitution, it will let
the children to generate their own ideas later in the production stage.
Conclusion
In conclusion, practicum is the best time to implement what we as a
teacher trainee learn in class. Besides, we can see the effect whether it is
effective and practical to be used in the lesson. Besides, I also learn on how to
produce a good assessment considering few factors for the students. Above all
of that, the experience have also taught me on how to produce a good lesson
plan and way to assess each activity in selected stages which is very essential
for every teacher .
