Dog/Cat License Renewals Due Soon

T
he Randolph Township Health
Department would like to remind
residents that all dogs and cats must
be licensed by 7 months of age and have a
current tag affixed to a collar or harness.
Licenses are good for one year and must
be renewed by January 31st of each year for
dogs and by February 28th of each year for
cats.
License applications are automatically
mailed in December to all registered pet
owners. For your convenience, we have
also made these applications available for
download from our Dog/Cat Licenses page.
As mandated under state law, a condition
of licensure requires that each dog or cat
has a current rabies vaccination. Please note
that our free rabies immunization voucher
program, as explained on the Dog/Cat
Licenses page, now has a defined time peri-
od for redemption—it is available between
December 15 and February 15.

The purpose of this annual contest is to
encourage children to learn about New

sentence structure and spelling.
First and second place winners from each
grade level will receive a fishing rod and

he Randolph Township Health
Department is announcing that the
next H1N1 vaccination clinic will
take place on Thursday, January 14th
between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:00
p.m. at the Randolph Middle School, 507
Millbrook Avenue in Randolph.
Prior to December 17th, the clinics were
only for five priority groups determined by
CDC guidelines. These restrictions have
been lifted and the H1N1 vaccination is
now available for everyone.
If you plan to attend, please do NOT
arrive early. We strongly urge your cooper-
ation as school will be in session and long
lines will interfere with school dismissal.

The Growing Stage - The Children’s
Theater of New Jersey’s production of Lyle
the Crocodile runs from February 19th to
March 28th, with performances on Fridays
at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at
4:00 p.m. The Growing Stage is a profes-
sional member of the Association of Actor’s
Equity. There will be five roles available for
AEA artists, a one AEA/ASM while other
roles will be filled by community artists,
making a cast of approximately fifteen. The
cast breakdown calls for five adult men,
four adult women, and six young perform-
ers between the ages of ten and thirteen.
Rehearsal schedules are generally two or
three evenings during the week, and a
weekend afternoon. All cast members are
expected for all performances, with no
exception since the company does not cast
understudies. Performers of color, seniors,
women and performers with disabilities are

L
et’s face it January may be the start
of a new year but winter weekends
start to get dull when the winter won-
derland is no longer inviting. Museums
may be the answer for something exciting to
do with the family together -hopefully
indoors. But the Thomas Edison museum
can offer something a little bit more – read
on.
Thomas Edison’s earlier light bulbs used
bamboo from Kyoto Japan. The bamboo
was a good filament for the incandescent
light bulb. Edison knew the importance of
learning other cultures and with Japan as a
major bamboo supplier he wanted to com-
prehend Japanese culture and Japan as a
whole. He employed several enterprising
Japanese workers at the Edison's laboratory.
One actually became a famous industrialist
in his own right. Kunihiko Iwadare had
worked for Thomas Edison's General
Electric Company prior to establishing the
Nippon Electric corporation company.
Thomas Edison had very successful associ-
ations with Japanese politicians, inventors
and prominent statisticians from the Asian
economics world. Even then Asia played an
important role in the world market of elec-
trical supplies.
We can be proud that our area schools
are also progressive in learning Asia stud-
ies. The 2009 New Jersey High School
Japanese Language Study Awards at Seton
Hall were given to our local Pope John
XXIII High School in Sparta
Today the Edison Museum maintains
this Japanese connection. One of the lan-
guages offered on their audio tour devices is
Japanese. What an opportunity this can be
for the middle school or high school student
to get to practice their Japanese knowledge.
Japanese language occasions can be a rare
find in many parts of NJ. Unfortunately,
spoken Japanese is not a popular language
in our local Lakeland communities unlike
languages such as Spanish or German.
However, you can listen to Japanese at the
museum. It is place where you can play
back the words as often as you like without
annoying a soul for repeating. But the best
part is… the audio tour devices are current-

launches it’s “Second Stage” Series in
2010, dedicated to emerging voices and
adventurous young professional theatre-
goers. Centenary Stage Company, in asso-
ciation with Tommy Gunn Theatricals,
presents a bold new play about personal and
corporate greed, Billboard by Michael
Vukadinovich, January 15 – 31 at the
Centenary Theatre in Hackettstown, NJ.
Inspired by the real life story of a Web
designer from Omaha who auctioned off his
forehead as an advertising space, this
provocative new play by an emerging voice
in contemporary theatre uses the premise as
a springboard to examine art, commercial-
ism, love and the nexus of all three. “I had
these questions about art versus advertising
and how much art has sold out,” Mr.
Vukadinovich told the New York Times in a
2007 interview.
In Vukadinovich’s play, when recent col-
lege graduate Andy, heavily weighed down
by student loans, gets paid a great deal to
tattoo a corporate logo on his forehead, his
liberal best friend Damon thinks he’s crazy.
His artist girlfriend Katelyn sees his deci-

Dunbar as “Katelyn,” and Adam Deremer
as “Damon.”

Mills Announce Video Contest
To Raise Hunger Awareness
N
early 50 million Americans, includ-
ing 17 million children, suffer from
food insecurity, according to
Feeding America, the nation’s leading
domestic hunger-relief charity. Yet the
issue of hunger is not easily described,
making those who suffer from it hard to
identify. The hungry could be the parent
who skips meals to ensure there is enough
food for their children, your elderly neigh-
bor or your co-worker.
To help call attention to the issue of food
insecurity, ShopRite Partners In Caring has
teamed up with General Mills to launch its
Expressions of Hunger video contest. The
goal of the contest is to creatively express
the plight of the hungry and offer solutions
to the issue through song, poetry, dance or
dramatic reading. Three sample videos that
convey thoughts on the issue through music
and poetry can be seen on the Expressions
of Hunger contest website (www.expres-
sionsofhunger.com)
Up to six grand prize winners of the
Expressions of Hunger contest will have
their stories and pictures featured on a lim-
ited-edition Cheerios Box available exclu-
sively at ShopRite stores in September
2010. The winning videos will be featured
on the ShopRite Partners In Caring website
(www.shopritepartnersincaring.org) and the
Expressions of Hunger contest website, as
well as on ShopRite’s YouTube page.
“Hunger is a very serious issue. Our
goal with the Expressions of Hunger contest
is to provide a forum to creatively convey
the impact of hunger and offer solutions to
address the problem,” said Chris Magyarits,
ShopRite Partners In Caring spokeswoman.
Family, friends, community members
and groups can submit their video entries
depicting their emotions and feelings on the
plight of the hungry. All entries must be
submitted by an adult aged 18 or over
between January 1, 2010 and midnight EST,
March 1, 2010. All entrants must reside in
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut,
Pennsylvania, Maryland or Delaware.
Entries are limited to one for each person or

Christ's second coming and the Last

ew Jersey Blood Services (NJBS), a division of the
New York Blood Center (NYBC) calls upon the
community to please donate blood today. Blood
drive cancellations due to recent storms, coupled with
unusually high demands from regional hospitals, have
impacted Rh-negative blood supplies, especially type O-
negative.
People with O-negative blood are known as “universal
donors” because their blood can be transfused into anyone.
Type O-negative blood is found in just 6 percent of the pop-
ulation, but is used more often by patients with other blood
types, especially in emergency rooms and trauma situa-
tions. It is also used in exchange transfusions for newborn
babies and pregnant women, and for premature babies in
intensive care units.
The need for blood is constant. Healthy people of all
blood types are encouraged to donate immediately. As
more wintry weather may be headed our way, the possibil-
ity of weather-related blood drive cancellations can place
additional pressure on supply. Hospital use of blood prod-
ucts remains high -- due to surgeries, emergencies and care
of cancer patients. About one in seven people entering a
hospital needs blood.
Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter
months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement
weather and illness. January, in particular, can be a difficult
month for blood centers to collect blood donations, as
approximately 15% of regional blood collection comes
from high schools and colleges, many of which have win-
ter recess this month.
NYBC takes very seriously its responsibility to provide
a safe, adequate and reliable blood supply for the 20 million
people of New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley,
and New Jersey. By donating blood this week and through-
out January, National Blood Donor Month, organizations
and individuals can help us maintain a safe, reliable and
