Crazy Facts
M
en can read smaller print than women can, but
women can hear better. (Can they hear them read-
ing small print?)
Half of all Americans live within 50 miles their birth-
place. (We like home games.)
The most popular name for boat owners who name their
boats is “Obsession.” (Take that Mr. Melville. In case you
didn’t know, the novel “Moby Dick” was originally named
“Obsession.”)
There are 61,000 people on average that are airborne
over the US in any given hour. (How about the ones in air-
planes?)
“Tom Sawyer” was the first novel ever written on a type-
writer. (What, no spell checker?)
Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their
hair. (How do they get zinc and copper in their hair?)
The origin of a few words and sayings:
“Goodnight, sleep tight” – Way back when, mattresses
were secured to bed frames by ropes. Pulling on the ropes
tightened the mattress, making the bed firmer and more
comfortable to sleep on.
“Honeymoon” – This word is traced back to ancient
Babylon, where for a month after a wedding, it was an
accepted practice that the bride’s father would supply his
son-in-law with all the mead (honey beer) he could drink.
Since their calendar was lunar based, this period was called
the honey month, which became known as the “honey
moon.”
“Mind your P’s and Q’s” – Ale is ordered by pints and
quarts in English pubs, and in old England, when customers
became unruly, the bartender would yell at them to “Mind
your Pints and Quarts, and settle down!”

Rh-Negative Blood Donors Needed

Now - Blood Supply Prioritized

N
ew Jersey Blood Services (NJBS), a division of the
New York Blood Center (NYBC) calls upon the
community to please donate blood today. Blood
drive cancellations due to recent storms, coupled with
unusually high demands from regional hospitals, have
impacted Rh-negative blood supplies, especially type O-
negative.
People with O-negative blood are known as “universal
donors” because their blood can be transfused into anyone.
Type O-negative blood is found in just 6 percent of the pop-
ulation, but is used more often by patients with other blood
types, especially in emergency rooms and trauma situa-
tions. It is also used in exchange transfusions for newborn
babies and pregnant women, and for premature babies in
intensive care units.
The need for blood is constant. Healthy people of all
blood types are encouraged to donate immediately. As
more wintry weather may be headed our way, the possibil-
ity of weather-related blood drive cancellations can place
additional pressure on supply. Hospital use of blood prod-
ucts remains high -- due to surgeries, emergencies and care
of cancer patients. About one in seven people entering a
hospital needs blood.
Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter
months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement
weather and illness. January, in particular, can be a difficult
month for blood centers to collect blood donations, as
approximately 15% of regional blood collection comes
from high schools and colleges, many of which have win-
ter recess this month.
NYBC takes very seriously its responsibility to provide
a safe, adequate and reliable blood supply for the 20 million
people of New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley,
and New Jersey. By donating blood this week and through-
out January, National Blood Donor Month, organizations
and individuals can help us maintain a safe, reliable and
adequate blood supply throughout the winter season.
