HELPING OUR LEARNERS SHINE AT HIGHER LEVELS
Do you teach higher levels? Have you started teaching them but still feel a little unsure?
Teaching higher levels can be an exciting challenge we need to be well aware of what it takes
to help our learners shine on their own. So, lets face this challenge, discover together what our
learners need and come up with different ways to help our learners become more independent
in their learning process.
Target Audience: Teachers of intermediate to advanced levels.

LAURA CHIARINO
Laura Chiarino Herrera has been teaching English for 24 years. TEFL (Dickens Institute), Trinity
College Licentiate Diploma, On-line Tutor Training Courses (Cambridge), Foundation Certificate

Coordinator of the Testing Team and Ceibal Remote teacher. She is also a freelance Public
Translator (English and Portuguese UDELAR)

HELPING OUR STUDENTS ACHIEVE A STAR PRONUNCIATION

Pronunciation is one area of teaching that is usually neglected, which is why it is sometimes
considered the Cinderella of ELT. More often than not when planning our lessons, we tend to
place too much emphasis on grammar and vocabulary, overlooking the fact that pronunciation
is a key element of a language. As a matter of fact, there are some pronunciation mistakes that
might lead to misunderstandings and thus a breakdown in communication. This can be very
frustrating for students, especially those who may have a very good command of grammar and
lexis but have difficulty in being understood and, apart from that, in understanding what others
(native and non-native speakers) say. In this workshop we will evaluate different ways in which
we can deal with pronunciation as an integral part of our lessons rather than as an add-on. We
will also look at some techniques and activities that can be easily implemented in our lessons,
regardless of our students level and age, which will certainly provide students with more tools
to become effective users of the language not only in the classroom but, above all, in the real
world.
Target Audience: Teachers of all levels.

VERNICA JARA
Vernica Jara has been teaching English at schools, high schools, companies and language
institutes for eight years now. She has worked with many levels and age groups ranging from
very young learners to adults. She has been working at Dickens for six years now and she is

2013 where she provides academic assistance to external teachers and schools regarding
International Examinations. She holds a TESOL Certificate from Trinity College London, the
FTBE from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the PCELTS from Trinity College
London and she has recently completed the LTCL DipTESOL course at Dickens.

PLENARIES
AWAKENING THE STAR WITHIN
There is not doubt we are all different. Each human being is a unique individual and that means
having different intelligences and capabilities. Our role as teachers is to find a way to reach all
students, to motivate them and get them to perform to the utmost of their abilities by
presenting them with engaging activities which cater for their interests and needs. Let's explore
some ideas on how to make our teaching memorable and effective...while having fun!

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO WRITE LIKE STARS

How important should the teaching of writing skills be in our ELT programmes? How early in
the learning process should we include it? What approach should we use? What kind of
feedback encourages our students skills development? Lets try to find some answers together
so that our classrooms can provide learners with enriching opportunities for the development
of the writing skills.

Teachers of Business English from The London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She also

THE STARS IN OUR CLASSROOMS:
WHY OUR STUDENTS ARE THE GREATEST TEACHING RESOURCE WE HAVE
We teachers know that it can be challenging to keep todays students both engaged and
educated: we are always given new ideas and materials to deal with this, without really finding
that special key to make it all work. But are we looking at it the wrong way round? Are the very
people we are trying to find resources for the ones who are actually the greatest resources in
themselves? In this session, we will be looking at the many ways in which you, as a teacher, can
learn strategies and techniques to develop your own students ability to become creative and
invaluable resources to achieve all of their ELT goals, from learning grammar and vocabulary to
producing spoken and written work which will at once engage and educate them, giving them
more motivation for the English studies and many useful tools for the wide English-speaking
world outside the classroom.

He holds an Honours Degree in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of

special interests are developing students receptive skills as well as studying Process Writing
and Discourse Analysis.
